[Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables

2019-03-29 Thread Doug Renwick
I have just ordered a pair of Kirkland hearing aids from Costco and I have
two questions:
1. Are these behind the ear aids susceptible to high levels of RFI?
2. Kirkland/Costco offer two different sizes of behind the ear, a smaller
one using type 312 batteries with a life of 4-5 days or a slightly larger
one using a type13 battery with a life around 10 days.
Both batteries are really cheap at $11.99 for 48.
What has been people's experience?

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Metric system

2019-02-25 Thread Doug Renwick
Center and Centre are interchangeable. They mean the same. Although Canadian
I use the American center, liter and kilometer; to me it makes sense. Spell
it like it sounds. In Canada we still buy lumber 2 x 4 in 8 ft lengths and
sheets 4 x 8. We need two set of wrenches Imperial and Metric. Should have
stayed with US units as America is our largest trading partner.

Doug

-Original Message-

For what it's worth, metric units outside of the US are often spelled
differently. For example, "litre" rather than the US-spelt "liter", or
"kilometre" rather than the US term "kilometer".

A "meter" is a device on an instrument panel! This is likely a UK or
European holdover.

Similarly, in Canada, when talking about a "center" (US), we write it as
"centre".

A "centre" is a place or an institution, for example a community centre, or
a university research centre. "Center" means the middle of something, like
the center of a photograph or the center of a line.

Just my two cents on this off-topic but interesting discussion!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-19 Thread Doug Renwick
I make my own shipping boxes. I describe my procedure below which in reality
is much easier and faster than it reads. I have employed this to ship by
post office quite a few radios and power supplies (i.e. Collins and Drake
gear) and have not had any damage. I have found the Styrofoam used here to
be very 'forgiving'.

You need to 'float' the item in a single shipping box. Select a box that is
at least 2" wider on each side, top and bottom and 3-4" wider front and
back. Get some solid Styrofoam insulation, preferably 2" thick; 1" thick
will work. Make a template of the rig's front or back for size. Measure the
inside of the box's front and back for height and width. With this
measurement cut two pieces of the Styrofoam board using utility knife.
Center the template from above on the Styrofoam board, mark and cut out the
opening. Slide the two Styrofoam boards onto the rig, say 1", one front and
one back. You may have to partially notch the board to accept the rigs feet.
It should be a firm fit. Place the rig into the box. It should be a firm fit
and the two Styrofoam board supports will 'float' the rig in the box.

The Styrofoam board support boards and rig need to be secured in place. Once
the rig is floating in the box, it will become obvious where additional
blocking needs to take place. Take other pieces of Styrofoam, cut to size to
go between the rigs front (2) and back (2), glued to the box, and resting on
the outside edges of the rig away from any knobs. This will prevent the rig
from sliding forward or rearward. Now take other pieces of Styrofoam, cut to
size and glue inside to the box sides (3 per side) to hold the Styrofoam
board supporting the rig in place. You can add bubble wrap, crumbled paper,
peanuts, foam to fill the openings, front, back, sides, top and bottom. I
also try to place the rig inside a plastic bag to reduce any chances of
scratching.

I had to send my KPA500 (including transformer) back to Elecraft from NY.
My KPA500 was a kit so, like you, I had to figure out the best packaging.
The KPA500 is much heavier than the K3s, so if you package as has been
recommended (i.e. 2 inches peanuts or bubble pack on all sides and no
movement), you should be fine. And, be sure to get the correct amount of
insurance. By the way, the packaging sent back from Elecraft had absolutely
no peanuts or bubble wrap; it wasn't needed. The two big foam end pieces
held the KPA500 rock solid in the box; There's no way I'm throwing that box
and foam pieces away.

Good luck,

Jerome,

Now this is interesting. This is totally opposite of the way most of us
were taught to solder. Among the kits I used to put together were Heathkit
and Ramsey, both of whom recommended securing the parts in place by
spreading the leads, soldering, and then cutting the wires close to the
solder blob, checking for shorts. I assume that goes for Elecraft also, but
I have not built any of their radios as kits, so not sure.

So how did NASA handle the potential difficulties? Did they have precut
parts? Did the tech have to place the part in the board and cut the leads
first? If the part was loose, how was it held close to the board, owing to
the fact that holding the solder and the iron took two hands? What if the
lead length was overestimated and potentially could cause a short? Could
the wire be cut and the joint reheated, or did the part have to be removed,
recut and reinserted?

Just trying to picture the operation.

About Message#15 copied below

Sorry but cutting wires after soldering is "bad practice"; NASA wanted the
soldered connection left undisturbed.

If I ever saw an assembler or tech doing that "bad practice", they'd get a
verbal warning that first time and a written warning if it ever happened
again; but I had good, conscientious people and never had to do that.

So, tin the wires if needed; position the part and then trim wires before
doing the final soldering.

Follow the instructions and solder as directed. There are components on both
sides as I recall with the majority on the top. The leads need be spread to
hold the components in place on the board. Once done soldering use a flush
cut wirecutter to remove the excess. Not a good idea to trim them before
soldering.
