[Elecraft] Yamaha CM-500

2023-08-07 Thread Douglas Hudson
I have a near new CM-500 headset and an unused Hail Pro-Set, both of which are
excess to my needs. $125 takes the lot, or $50 and $75. Contact me off list
if interested.

Subject: [Elecraft] Attempted KX2 purchase update!! False Alarm!!

Hi all,
Now that I've got all the facts..or most.Scam was much to strong a word
in referencing why didn't receive a response from Doug, K7CUU, after I mailed
and then emailed him a photo of my KX2 payment check on June 19th. The check
still hadn't arrived at his location as of the 24th. He doesn't use PayPal.
Back and fourth emails were working fine last week. We had, at least, six
overall amd stopped on June 19th.
During this "no contact" period, I felt I had no choice but to put a stop
payment on the check.

I finally called him on the phone today. I didn't call earlier since I was very
concerned that his health may have taken a turn for the worst and I didn't want
to burden his wife with an additional problem if that were the case.

So, bottom line, my apologies to Doug, K7CUU for me thinking the worst.

Re: [Elecraft] Attempted KX2 purchase!

2023-06-23 Thread Douglas Hudson
Uh, I am K7CUU and a gentleman from New Jersey contacted me about purchasing a
KX2 I listed for sale on this forum. I am of the impression we arrived at an
acceptable price about a week ago and have the unit, plus a couple extras, all
packaged up and ready to take to the post office. I would like to complete
this transaction, but I haven’t heard from him for several days and have found
nothing from him in my mail box. This post, below, is the first I have heard
there may be something amiss. I believe the gentleman has my phone number(s)
and welcome his call.

That's what I concluded as well. I suggest sending a letter via USPS to
him or his wife, asking about the transaction.

[Elecraft] FS, two Elecraft rigs, Ks and KX2

2023-05-21 Thread Douglas Hudson
Medical issues suggest it would be wise for me to reduce my inventory of ham
related items I have collected over the past 63 years. I have the following
for sale:

K2/10, SN 6280 with the following accessories and options,

KNB2, K6OXV, KAF2, KBT2, KDSP2, KSB2, and KAT2. The KBT2 battery is not
included as it no longer holds a charge and is heavy to the point it may cause
physical damage in shipping. The battery can be found on the internet.
This unit was recently submitted to Dave Wallaghen with a request to check the
statis and function of all options and accessories, do a complete alignment,
and overall function test. Dave did a wonderful job, and the unit is 100%
operational.
Included is literature and spare/old parts for the options, plus the assembly,
alignment, and owner's manuals. Photos are available along with Dave
Wallaghan's report. Asking $950 plus shipping from the Seattle area.

KX2-F, SN 1888, Shack-In A- Box the following options,
KXAT2, KXIO2, KXBC2, KXBT2, KX2GNDPLUG, MH3, CS40 (Small Lowepro case), KXPD2,
KXUSB, KXIO2, and Gem Products extended side plates with Lexan cover.
This unit is 100% operational.

I also have the following which I would like to sell with the KX2 as a complete
package,

A brand new, never used Elecraft AX1 antenna with associated bipod, 90 degree
BNC connector, and counterpoise.
A new, never used Buddipole-Mini antenna package.
An older Heil Pro-Set headset which has never been used.

All of these products come from a childless, no smoking home, and are in new
condition. The Elecraft rigs have no marks, or blemishes, and are 100%
operational. The two antennas are also new and 100%.
I would like to sell the KX2 as a complete set with the two antennas and
headset. Asking $1,600 for the package.

Photos of all of these items are available upon request. These items are also
listed for sale on another venue.

Please inquire via direct e-mail.

[Elecraft] FS Elecraft K2

2023-01-03 Thread Douglas Hudson
I am assisting the widow of an avid CW op who became a silent key. I have
little knowledge of the K2 so, preparatory to the sale, I fired up the radio
and noted what I thought was poor performance compared to my KX2 and KX3 units
so I sent it to Dave Van Wallaghen of W8FGU Services and requested he check it
for proper assembly, check performance and update statis of all options, and
perform a complete alignment. Dave offers a 90-day warrantee on his work and,
knowing my intent to sell, advised he would honor the warrantee by the
purchaser.

Cosmetically, this QRP unit is a 9.9, is fully operational, and has the
following options:

KAT2, KSB2, KDSP2, KBT2, KAF2, K6OXV, K160RX, and UNPCBS Mic Adapter.

New, in kit form, this rig would cost on the order of $2,200. This unit looks
as if new, is fully assembled, aligned, tested, and offered, with warrantee, at
$1,400, OBO. Photos and a PDF of Dave's report are available.

Please contact me off list if interested.

Please contact me off-list if you'd be interested in an internal charger for

install in the same place as the KXIO2 option, and would still include the same

[Elecraft] FS, KX3 and PX3 package

2020-05-16 Thread Douglas Hudson
A few months ago I listed for sale two KX3/PX3 packages and a KPA100 amp. I
ended up having another surgery about that time so I pulled one of them for
something to play with during my recovery. Health issues persist so it is time
to move the second package. It consists of:

KX3 transceiver
KAT3 internal tuner
KXFL3 internal filter set
MH3 mic
PX3 pan adaptor
Complete Elecraft cable package.
I do not have the KXPD3 paddle or the KXBC3 internal clock/charger.
All of the above is factory assembled and in very good condition. The package
comes from a non smoking, no child home and as never been in a mobile or field
environment.
$1,400 for all of the above.

I also have a Bencher BY-1 paddle key, used but in as new condition, and a new
Apache 3800 case. $1,500 for the total package.

[Elecraft] REVISED FS, two KX3 packages

2019-11-12 Thread Douglas Hudson
I have to get real with the prices. I also forgot to include the Powerwerx
power supply, A $119 item. See revision below.

I have two KX3s, both with PX3 panadapters, and one with a KXPA-100. Both are
from a non-smoking environment with no children or pets.

System no. 1:

KX3, factory assembled
Automatic antenna tuner
Dual passband filter
MH3 mic
The usual cable package
Owners manual
It is a late model unit with the heavier OEM heat sink.
NOTE; This package was used as a base station. As a result, I do not have the
internal clock/charger or batteries

PX3 panadapter, factory assembled
Cable package
Owners manual

KXPA-100 amplifier
KXAT100 internal ATU option, factory installed Cable package Owners manual

I forgot to include a Powerwerx SS30DV power supply to system 1.

Asking $2,300

System no. 2:

KX3, factory assembled
Automatic antenna tuner
Dual passband filter
MH3 mic
KXPD3 keyer paddle
Clock/charger
Owners manual
Cable package
Eneloop NiMH batteries
Windcamp HD heat sink, plexiglass cover, end plates, and canvas bag

PX3 panadapter, factory assembled
Cable package
Owners manual
Windcamp end plates, plexiglass cover, and canvas bag

Asking $1,500

Why am I selling? I have chronic, often severe pain which has taken the joy
out of most everything in life. I have not been on the air in the last two
years and this gear needs a new home. I fired up package number two last night
to check into the 40 meter CW net but QSB and a high noise level made for no
joy in Mudville. Both systems are in great condition and I hate to let them go
but, well, it is time.

Re: [Elecraft] 10 dB or 3?

2018-12-13 Thread Douglas Hudson
It's been 50 years since I worked in the acoustic labs at Boeing where I posed
the same question. One of the specialists in the passenger accommodation
section of the lab explained it this way: the human ear is a SUBJECTIVE and
dynamic instrument. In other words, the perception of sound pressure level
(SPL) is a function of environment, how a person feels (is the person ill or
have a runny nose, etc.), the listeners temperament (is he happy or upset),
the nature of the sound (does the listener like the sound or does he find it
annoying), how much has the listener had to drink, etc. As for the dynamic
aspect, depending on the environment, you may hear a particular sound one way
but a bit differently a moment later, depending on the above factors. Another
factor is that sound can be much like water leaking into a boat. Both the
water and SPL increases over time depending on the opening through which the
water or sound enters a space. That type of sound can be measured with
instruments but difficult to assess by ear. Sound in a restaurant can be much
like water in a boat, people tend to talk louder which increases the overall
SPL which causes them to talk even louder. In short, the rule of thumb is that
it takes about a 10 dB increase in SPL for a person to perceive a doubling in
the level of the sound. 3dB is almost imperceptible with most any kind of
background noise.

On a tangential note, during the late 60s the Super Sonic Transport (SST)
program was in progress and NASA conducted an extensive series of tests to
determine objective and subjective aspects of sonic booms. The tests were
conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California over a three month period.
Boeing, Lockheed, and other institutes participated. The base was building
additional housing at the time so several of the new structures were used for
the tests. Three of them were fitted out like regular homes with carpeting,
window shades and curtains, furniture, etc., and a couple of the houses were
configured more like offices or large department stores. Some of the homes had
people in them and others did not. All of the buildings were extensively
instrumented, both inside and out. All of my transducers were mounted on the
outside of the buildings and my recording equipment was in a double garage of
one of the houses. In my building, the garage door had been replaced with a
large plate glass window to simulate a store front. The mounting assembly for
the glass was changed from time to time to test various mounting designs. The
subjective part of the test was done with people from the local communities who
sat in various rooms and filled out forms designed to rate the effects of the
sounds they heard. The sonic booms were generated by F104, B58, B70, and the
then new SR71/YF12 aircraft. During some of the subjective tests, a KC135
(Boeing 707) airplane was used to simulate takeoff or low fly over sounds near
airports. I never read the final report(s) of the tests but a few preliminary
reports made the rounds. In the case of the subjective tests, people were all
over the map. In many cases, people would give radically different scores for
identical tests days or weeks apart. The objective tests often produced
predictable results but there were times when repeat tests produced big
surprises. Temperature, humidity, wind, and even doors open of closed, made
noticeable differences in the measured data. For a quick look, we taped a ball
point pen to the center of the large window and mounted a paper plate on the
face of a clock so the plate was driven by the second hand. When the boom hit,
the pen would produce a trace on the plate showing the displacement of the
window. Some of the test were done with the garage being "tuned" by
judiciously opening a door. A given aircraft would hit us with a boom then the
door would be readjusted and the same aircraft would duplicate the boom minutes
later. The difference could be startling. During one series of identical
flights the first boom displaced the window 15mm but the second boom produced a
displacement of 155mm.

This type of testing is very expensive so, in an attempt to reduce the costs a
ten foot diameter exponential horn which was mounted on a trailer. To test the
efficacy of this device, the trailer was placed near one of the houses then two
positive pressure pulses of gas were produced to simulate a sonic boom. The
people in the house were told the boom was from an aircraft and asked to rate
it in the usual way. (A sonic boom consists of a positive pressure spike
followed by a negative spike. The amplitude, shape, and timing of the spike is
a function of the speed and shape of the aircraft though the shape of the spike
can be modified by structural and geologic features. The tests with the horn
produced only positive spikes but the shape and timing could be adjusted
mechanically. One day there

Re: [Elecraft] P3 v. SDRPlay RSP1A for panadapter

2018-11-22 Thread Douglas Hudson
Bill,

The P3 is designed specifically for use with the K3/K3s line. It has features
like function buttons for rig and display control, click on a signal to change
the vfo(s) to that frequency, split display for both spectra and waterfall,
updatable firm/software, etc. None of this is available with any of the play
units without supplimental programs. The eye appeal of the P3 sitting beside
the transceiver is hard to beat but, with the P3, the size of the display is
fixed where with a play unit the size of the display is up to you and your
budget. To me, the drawback with a play unit, beside the above, is the
requirement for a computer and monitor to process and display the image. If
the function buttons, split spectra/waterfall display, and VFO versatility is
of little interest to you, the play units will save you a sack of bux, assuming
you already have a computer and monitor.

See Elecraft's recap of the P3 here:

I'm about to place an order for a K-Line and have a question for the
experienced users out there. What is the advantage of the P3 v. The SDRPlay box
as a panadapter if any?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] Noise cancelling headphones

I have two pair Bose QC15 and one less costly headphones ($125), all of which
are about three years old. The black coating on every one of the ear piece
cushions has deteriorated and flacked off. The sets work properly and I like
them but I could do without the black poof all over the place.

Re: [Elecraft] Ceiling fan interference

2017-12-15 Thread Douglas Hudson
Brian

Several years ago I had a Casablanka ceiling fan which was mounted in a
location where the sun would hit it. During spring and autumn the sun was in a
position so the sunlight would shine through the blades then reflect off a
white wall and illuminate a small SCR night light. The blades chopped the
light causing rapid on/off switching of the SCR. The resulting pulsed RFI
drove me nuts for three years. The pulse frequency was a function of fan RPM.
Change your fan speed and see if it effects your situation.

Sounds like a pulse width modulation controlled variable speed DC motor. Their
website doesn't give any details other than the DC motor. There is a tech
support link on their website you could query them.

Similar to the problems hams have with the new high efficiency furnaces? I
have one of those that I tamed with some ferrite clamp-ons on the thermostat
line.

I listened to check in to the 40 meter net. I could faintly hear the net
control station but could not copy his transmissions here in Washington State.
Most California stations were at least 5 7 or 5 9 but I didn't hear anyone ask
