Hey Jim,

If you think Cad-Welding a ground rod is fun to watch, take a look at
thermite welding of railroad tracks:

The primary purpose of grounding bonding has NOTHING to do with radio --
it's for LIGHTNNG PROTECTION!

Yes, it certainly is fun! I summoned my XYL and the neighbor's kid to
watch. :)

This posting from Wayne, N6KR, pretty much explains why I've been an
Elecraft guy since August 2011 when I signed up for a factory built 100W
K3 with a few options and haven't regretted it a day since.

A first rate product, first rate support and first rate company.

I pasted a teaser for those who may have not waded through all the
responses.

I built the very first K2, not long after Eric and I sketched out the design
on napkins right in the middle of Field Day at Henry Coe state park. (Some
claim this is mythology, but I was there That first unit wasn?t even
painted, and we had yet to design the option modules.

Break out the Dramamine.

Some years ago a very seasoned commercial sailor told me; "there's not a man
alive that under certain sea conditions, won't toss his cookies". After a few
trips, I too learned that to be true. I later inquired about what to eat for
breakfast? He said, "bananas, namely because they taste the same coming up
as going down."

I want to throw in the presence of possibly counterfeit connectors as well.

This is important; in evaluating suppliers for our adapters at Pro Audio
Engineering we were sent a sample of non-Anderson PP connectors which just
did not mate correctly with the real thing. The leaf spring under the
contact was of insufficient preload to keep the pair mated under light
tension, which also throws the reliability of the contact resistance into
question.

We didn't find a problem with crimp retention, but that is so very specific
to the actual ID of the ferrule and the gauge of the wire being crimped. It
is possible that someone using a wire at the small end of the range for that
specific contact could have a problem. It can be compelling to save 50% or
more on a connector, but we ended up using Anderson PPs, and have had zero
quality issues as a result.

[Elecraft] K2 accessories order

2015-08-02 Thread Edward T. Tanton
I have K2 SN 00057. It is the most basic it can be. I stopped once it was
working even though I had lots of the original add-ons because I was simply
having too much fun.

So, here is my dilemma: I have ALL of the options except the KPA100,
including updates DSP, but have not yet installed any of them. I hope to
even get the KPA100 for a combined late October birthday/Christmas. Does
anyone have a list of a) what order I SHOULD install them in; b) which
ones should NOT be used with any others? (I understand the battery and I
THINK the internal antenna tuner are not usable with the KPA100.) Thanks.
