Re: [Elecraft] Insurance

2024-07-21 Thread Eric Garner
I'll also chime in about ARRL insurance. I had my backpack with my HT in it
stolen out of my car. When I filed a claim, they just asked for a copy of
the police report and it was done. Super easy.

The other nice thing is that you can set your own replacement cost for your
radio. Since my HT was a TH-D72a, replacement cost is higher than the
original purchase price, and I could adjust that each year when the policy
was up for renewal.

If you email elecraft support they can tell you if they have any in stock.
The last time I needed a part for my KX3 they didn't have any, but gave me
the Mouser part number so I could get it my self.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Option Advice Wanted

2022-05-02 Thread Eric Garner
I have a KX3 fully loaded (KXFL3, KXAT3, KXBC3, KX3-2M) the only one I
would skip if I had to do it over is the KXBC3. The NiMH batteries just
don't have the oomph to justify adding them for me and having the RTC
doesn't really matter to me, your needs might be different. I just use an
external LiFePO4 pack for power.
The Pro Audio Engineering heatsink addon (
https://proaudioeng.com/oos-pae-kx32-ultimate-heatsink-kit-elecraft-kx3/)
is nice if you will be running digimodes without an external amplifier.

That isn't accurate. Even modern no-clean fluxes can cause corrosion and
current leakage if left in place under certain conditions If leakage is a
concern, you can specify a surface resistivity level and the boards can be
ultrasonic washed or double DI washed to meet that criteria.

Re: [Elecraft] [POSSIBLE SPAM] Cleaning Solder Flux, Redux

2021-12-31 Thread Eric Garner
Depends on what flux was used. The current crop of "no clean" fluxes does
not come off well with isopropyl alcohol and leaves a white film on the
board. Other fluxes dont have this problem.

I use the same stuff we use at work for light rework which is the heavy
duty flux remover from MG Chemical.

Acetone will eat some types of plastic and should be avoided.

Adding a VNA into a tuner adds component cost, placement cost, board area
cost, engineering cost, additional manufacturing cost to test and find cal
coefficients, etc. If you are building your own tuner, go nuts, but unless
you think you need to do that to differentiate yourself somehow from
competitors I don't see much benefit of doing it commercially.

Re: [Elecraft] rack mount for KPA 1500 and PS

2021-05-03 Thread Eric Garner
If you want your rack to look like a 16-year-olds Honda Civic, Novexcomm
makes this: http://www.novexcomm.com/product.php?prodid=619
If you prefer a more understated look
https://www.snsengineering.com/product-page/rack-anel-for-kpa1500
You can also buy a vanilla rack shelf from the vendor of your choice and
save $300

Re: [Elecraft] K4 shipping

2021-04-26 Thread Eric Garner
There was an update to the K4 product page yesterday that spelled this out
in more detail:

*K4 Update 4/25/2021*

We are working hard getting your K4's out the door and we have just
finished shipping our Group 1 orders from May 16th, which was 1 day before
the 2019 Dayton Hamvention opened. We are now shipping from the May 17th
group 1 orders.

We had a huge surge of orders on May 17th from both Dayton, on-line and
telephone orders. We expect it will take us approximately 4-6 weeks to ship
these orders. After that you will start to see the the order date that we
are shipping change much more quickly.

Re: [Elecraft] axt1 tripod

2020-04-01 Thread Eric Garner
I have an XIT Photo XT57TRS tripod that I use with the AXT1 with the AX1.
With the removable plate it seems to work well :

Re: [Elecraft] Windcamp X3 Li-ion Battery Box usage?

2019-09-23 Thread Eric Garner
Looking on ebay, there are no less that 9 sellers that have this item. Most
of the closeup shots on all the auctions have a visible URL on the side of
the battery pack for http://windcamp-gear.com which does not have a
battery box anywhere on the website, so who knows who is actually making or
selling these.

Re: [Elecraft] KX4 Features ??

2019-09-19 Thread Eric Garner
One thing it buys you is compatibility with user expectations. The K3s has
a builtin USB sound card, so leaving it out of the K4 would not meet user
expectations of what flagship rig like the K4 should look like. Considering
there's a USB sound card built into most modern rigs now, it would look bad
when comparing them.

I can even hear the whining and moaning now "You are telling me that the
IC-7300, which costs less than a quarter of the price of the K4 has a
built-in sound card and the K4 does not?"

An upgrade to the kxbc3 to Li-ion or Li-poly would be great, but otherwise

Re: [Elecraft] poor 2m reception on KX3

2019-07-12 Thread Eric Garner
Following Scott McDonald's off list suggestion I went through with the
cover off and wiggled the coax internal to the KX3 hoping to find an
intermittent connection. I ended up discovering a kink in the coax from the
antenna connector to the 2m board. I'm going to replace that and see if
that was the issue.

[Elecraft] poor 2m reception on KX3

2019-07-11 Thread Eric Garner
I just purchased a KX3-2M 2m transverter module for my KX3. After
installing it I'm finding that I have very poor 2m FM (I have not tried
SSB) reception. A station just north of me that usually pegs the S-Meter on
every other radio I own is down in the S3-S4 region and barely copyable.
Receiving on my TH-D72 concurrently to the KX3 is fine.

I have double checked that my connections to the antenna are sound. I have
swapped antennas between my HT and my KX3 (both are using a Diamond
SRH77CA) with no improvement. Since the 2m module uses the 6m band as it's
IF I've confirmed that 6m FM works as expected.

Does anyone have other troubleshooting steps that might be of use before I
contact elecraft?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] new computers, the search for serial ports and the meaning of life...

2019-06-20 Thread Eric Garner
We use USB/serial adapters from startech

https://www.newegg.com/startech-icusb234858i-usb-to-rs-232-422-485-serial/p/N82E16812399182

at work for our serial port needs. mostly because the ports enumerate in
the same order every time, which is a huge bonus. they have smaller,
cheaper versions as well as a more expensive version that tunnels serial
over ethernet. Having hardware serial ports be the limiting factor when
choosing a PC seems overly limiting to me.
