Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz/500KHz

2012-09-07 Thread Eric Tichansky NO3M
There is another caveat to keep in mind when using the K3 in
transverter mode. Sensitivity will be subject to the ham band
BPFs, so a preamp may be needed if the "IF" freq. falls well
outside the BPF passband unless a general coverage module (KBPF3)
is installed. The KBPF3 works fine if the KXV3 is in TEST mode
but the K3 is not setup with a transverter band, ie. you're
parked on 10.500 MHz for 500 kHz conversion. However, when using
a transverter band (ie. direct freq. readout using IF=10, RF=0),
the KBPF3 is not switched in when it should be. I have brought
this to the attention of support/development since it is clearly
a bug and there should be no need for a preamp with the KBPF3
installed. In the meantime, I use IF=14 and RF=0 for a
transverter band and get direct freq. readout. The 20M ham BPF
is wide enough that there isn't a significant amount of
attenuation at 14.500 MHz.

Having both 3.5 MHz and 10 MHz would be good additions to the
transverter IF selections. The former because there are numerous
converter circuits published or were/are commercially available
based on 3.5 MHz, the latter because it is a defacto reference freq.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 MF/LF Transverter

2012-07-08 Thread Eric Tichansky NO3M
There are plenty of LF converters to homebrew from, most very
simple including those using an SA602/612. Another is the AMRAD
LF converter, QST April 2002. PCBs can be purchased from FAR
circuits. I use three of those for dual RX and TX with a 14MHz
local oscillator and a K3 in transverter mode, displaying the
actual LF freq (Project: http://no3m.net/index.php?page=600m ).

There are guys in the experimental group running antennas far
smaller than most would consider. However, while a short,
minimally top-loaded (relatively speaking), heavily base loaded
antenna will be grossly inefficient, all it takes is more power
to reach the ERP level, which will be low anyways.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports

2011-07-12 Thread Eric Tichansky NO3M
Another very reasonable switch for the "kit" builder:
http://home.comcast.net/~kk1l/kk1l_2x6switch/

I trunk three of those from an old Sixpack for up to 18 antennas
(still have 4 unused slots!) and they've worked flawlessly.
Total cost of PCB, parts, and LMB Heeger aluminum box was perhaps
around $145.
