[Elecraft] re-no subject

2013-05-27 Thread f9oj.7
Reply to Richard Hemingway...

I did assemble mine in January 2009, I was 86, and just completed a P3 last
week ( honestly, it's easy to do, much easier than assembling a K2, which I
did in 2002, + amplifier,ATU , DSP, audio filter etc...)
It reminded me the good old days with Heathkit, and thanks to the Elecraft
gang which allows old trout like me to feel not so old after all !

Nothing can change this abnormal set up.

[Elecraft] KDVR3

2010-11-07 Thread f9oj
Hello
I drop this on behalf of a friend of mine who’s not too good at English !
He has just installed a KDVR3 option on his K3. Recording is OK, but when he
records his friends and sends them back the recording, they say it’s not good
at all !
He does exactly what is said on the manual, and he would like to know if anyone
else has, or had, the same trouble.
Thanks for any hint.

[Elecraft] re-queer behaviour

2010-08-18 Thread f9oj.7
Hello

Many thanks to Charles, John, Paul, Guy and Nigel for their replies.
I have used a SB 220 for about10 years, with an Icom 751 first, then with a
K3. I got a Slow Key from Harbach, all worked normally, but I didn't notice
the key line was negative !
Otherwise I would have told my friend ( Gerard, F6CVM) not to connect
direct.
Anyway he ordered a Sofkey from Harbach and that'lldo the trick.
I saved your replies, gentlemen, and I'll read them more carefully when the
grand children have gone home, I shan't be so busy !
Thanks again and take care

[Elecraft] queer behaviour !

2010-08-18 Thread f9oj.7
Hello
A good friend of mine, F6CVM, has a K3 as well as an Icom transceiver. He
uses an old Heath SB 230 as an amplifier.
When he connects Icom/SB 230, no problem.
But if he connects K3/SB 230, as soon as he plugs the cinch into the K3 key
out output , (with no drive), the amplifier sets on the transmit position !
Did anyone meet the same problem or has a clue about it ?
Thanks for any idea...

[Elecraft] K3 I750 hz tone

2010-05-24 Thread f9oj.7
Hello
Perhaps I'll look stupid (once more !), but I can't find how to switch a 2 m
repeater on with the 1750 hz tone.
I have the minus 600 khz OK, the 1750 hz tone ( which is the standard in
France) is set normally, but I couldn't find, in the owner's manual or
manually, the right way to open the blessed repeater !
If someone knows the trick, let me know ...
Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] hi sig : fixed up !

2010-02-26 Thread f9oj.7
Thanks to Gary Surrency, the "Hi Sig" displays at last disappeared and the
rig works normally.
Gary said the KPIO3 could be the cause of the trouble. So, I uninstalled it,
as well as the 100w module, downloaded the DSP firmware, and restarted the
K3 in the 10 w config'. All went well, so I decided to check, if,
reinstalling the KPIO3 and 100w amp, I would still get the "hi sig" again.
Believe it or not , it didn't, and my K3 works beautifully again !
Thanks again to those who replied to my "bouteille à la mer" last wednesday.
Just in case you are interested, there will the French Contest next week-end
(to morrow in fact, from 00:00 Saturday to 18:00 Sunday (I think...!)

[Elecraft] re-hi sig

Thanks for your replies...
Here's what I can say :
1/ Antenna disconnected : no effect !
2/ I upgraded the last 3.76 firmware a week ago > first impression :
improvement with the NR operation.
3/ After the breakdown, I tried re-loading this firmware, but the DSP
loading failed !

I just got a mail from Gary Surrency, and it seems there is a lot of
checking to do : thanks very much Gary, and thanks again to Brett and the
other Gary...

[Elecraft] do I miss something...?

2010-01-13 Thread f9oj.7
Hello
I assembled a W2 wattmeter last december, but I had to spend a couple of
weeks in a clinic, and when back home, I tested it, but it did work as it
ought to !

When "power" on, no problem ; when tapping"range", the 2 watt led never
lights up. The others do normally.

If I apply RF via the K3, the whole line of the "power" green leds lights
up, whatever power applied, and the SWR line flickers all over the range.

Has anyone an idea?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Re: [Elecraft] Hakko in Europe

2007-07-22 Thread f9oj.7
Hello
Thanks, Trevor for your info.
I bought 4 years ago a German ( was it a Chinese made stuff...?) desoldering
system. Worked not so well, but was somehow helpful. Needed it after a year
of non-use, and just refuses to suck ! And it seems difficult to open : no
screws, but a queer sort of clip on the cover and bottom. So I wonder if it
shouldn't be wiser to get a definitely reliable tool !
Thanks again for the help

Re: [Elecraft] Signing "/QRP"

2007-06-13 Thread f9oj.7
Hello everyone
Nobody mentionned the importance of the antenna when operating QRP. Which
is the best : 10 watts on a three element beam or 100 watts on a dipole ?
I am not a DX champion or an avid contester but I reached te 100 countries
without particularly hunting for any of these, and in about a year's time.
Using a 6 el. log yagi on ten, an HB9CV on 15 and another one on 20.
No complex for QRP on SSB, please, but adjust carefully your antennas !

Well, there's the huge difference between us Mike. I call "W3XYX W3XYZ W3XYZ
DE AC7AC AC7AC AC7AC/QRP" ;-)

Same for CQ. My thinking is that if hearing the /QRP is going to confuse
anyone, I want them to get the call right first.

As for a QRP signal being 'tiny', it all depends upon conditions. Digging
out weak signals can be fun. I do it out of habit. I find I'm digging "in
the mud" for a 100 watt or greater signal at least as often as a QRP signal.

I've given and received lots of 579 to 599 reports and enjoyed long, long
rag chews when we're both running 5 watts or less to suggest that QRP is not
a all a tiny signal when conditions are right.

I share some of the feelings of both camps regarding signing or not signing
using /QRP. As a result, I use a combination. I generally call by txing:

cq cq cq de ab3ap/qrp ab3ap ab3ap

I put the "/QRP" in early so the responding op doesn't feel obligated to
resend it back to me, send it only once because it takes time, but send it
more than not at all so listeners know what that tiny signal is.

For what it's worth,

Re: [Elecraft] Toroid enamel covering

2007-03-06 Thread f9oj.7
Hi
Someone on the list some time ago gave a very efficient way for cleaning the
wire, but you need a desoldering iron with a "sucker" tip. You prepare a
good blob of solder which you suck inside the tip, then slip an inch or so
of your enamelled wire in the tip, wait 5 or ten seconds and you press the
button of your desoldering iron, which sucks in both solder and enamel, and
you can retrieve a perfect tinned end of your wire.
I hope you get what I mean. I should add that a Hakko or other brand of
desoldering iron is a most useful tool in a ham shack.

Quite a few hams boast an old Heathkit equipment, transceiver or accessory,
that they proudly display on a shelf of their shack, or occasionnaly still
use
You surely know that Edward Heath, who started the Heath Company around
1900, created aeroplane kits first ? There's still one flying*, restored in
2000. It's at Brodhead, Wisconsin, owned and piloted by Chris Price...There
are also many vintage planes, all flying on this airfield.
Sorry to be OT...but this could have interested somebody.

[Elecraft] 10 meter propagation

2006-08-15 Thread f9oj.7
Hi
10 meters has been "open" through Europe for some time and occasionnally as
far as South America : yestesday, at 18 h UTC, a couple of PY stations were
coming in with decent signals, around 56 to 58. Called them with my K2 and
10 watts (antenna : 6 el log yagi) but no reply and eventually got them with
80 watts on the IC 751. Was it an effect of the gray line, though a bit
early ?

far as South America : yestesday, at 18 h UTC, a couple of PY stations were
coming in with decent signals, around 56 to 58. Called them with my K2 and
10 watts (antenna : 6 el log yagi) but no reply and eventually got them with
80 watts on the IC 751. Was it an effect of the gray line, though a bit
early ?
>From Europe, it seems the path is rather open to the South West than to the
North West.

[Elecraft] re-10 meters is open

2006-07-15 Thread f9oj.7
Hi
It has indeed been open for a while. Here in Europe, just "local" contacts
within 500 or 600 hundred miles, occasionnally South America or North Africa
( gray line ?).
Not real DX, but it keeps the band alive !
With 10 watts and a good beam, you can enjoy yourself a lot.
Have a nice week-end

[Elecraft] re-10 meters

2006-06-01 Thread f9oj.7
Hi
Here in western Europe, there's some propagation in the evening, just before
sunset (i-e abt 18 :00 or 19 :00 UTC) quite a few European, African and
south American stations. In fone you might find them between about 28.400
to 28.500, in CW from 28.000 to 28.200. But it's not regular. You should try
your luck !
