Re: [Elecraft] RX antenna & carrier-operated relay

2017-03-06 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W

Jim,
thanks for the info about the VE3DO loop, I'll check OK1RR webpage out.
My short beverage runs away from the tower, starting about 5 meters from
it and going towards USA (NW). Unfortunately I don't have much more
space to relocate the beverage farther away.
My idea was to ask adding a menu option that automatically switches off
the RX-ant input when the operator pushes the ptt, as usually the
single-op doesn't need to keep it connected while transmitting. Of
course it should also re-enable it at the end of the tx if needed.
I know that an external relay is easy to use, but this could come for
free when a new firmware is released.

You've seen my antenna farm -- Beverages run within 20-30 ft of my
160M TX antenna facing NE. Beverages feed a DX Eng preamp before going
the sub-RX. I don't do anything special to protect the radio, but it
does occasionally protect itself. I also use the Beverages on 80, 40,
and 30M, but TX antennas are much farther away (more than 100 ft).
This is at 1.5 kW with a Ten Tec tube amp.

BTW -- I just added a pair of VE3DO loops tuned for 160M and aimed to
EU. Each loop is a rectangle 40 ft long and 10 ft vertical, with the
bottom wire 2 ft off the ground and fed at the center. Details on
OK1RR's website. The two loops are spaced 5/8 wavelength (350 ft). You
probably don't have room for two loops, but you might fit one of them.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Looking for feedback on K3DVR

2016-07-21 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W
Hi guys,
I have my KDVR installed since my first K3.
My activity is 99.5% contesting... my best spent bucks definitely, in
particular if you're going to be low power.
No delays for me. Just need to be quick when you press the buttons, as the
recording starts immediately. The same applies for ending the
recording...usually after a few tries you get used to this.

I only miss two features:
- uploading and downloading audio from the PC would be great;
- Setting the repeat delay resolution to 1/10th of a second would be better
than the current setting of 1 second resolution (even 0.5s would be ok)

Just my 2 cents

Wayne,
thank you for your clarification. That was something that appeared very
strange to me while looking at the graphs, and was thinking if it was some
sort of mistake. Probably many people had my same thoughts.
Unfortunately the QST paper copies can't be fixed, and this will generate

[Elecraft] Cloning K3 settings

2014-09-11 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W

Hi guys,
I'm trying to clone the K3 configuration to another (similar, but
not identical) K3.

Is there an automatic way to do this?
I've tried the K3 Utility, but doing a Save/Restore K3 config seems to
be a (potentially) dangerous way to do that, as the configuration file
includes the calibration settings.
The values I am interested in are the general parameters of the menu,
such as AGC settings, TX/RX equalizers, mic settings, macros, and so on.

Maybe K3-EZ can do that? Is that program still around?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] [K3] DVR feature request for next firmware release

2014-04-10 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W
Hi guys,
during contests I often use the K3 DVR in the auto-repeat mode.
I'd like to suggest an improvement, i.e. the possibility to adjust the
delay not in seconds but in tenths of a second.
That would allow a more precise repeat timer... sometimes you need to set
for example 2.5 seconds of delay, because 2 could be too fast and 3 too
slow.

Just my 2 cents for the next firmware release of a great radio!

[Elecraft] K3 Audio: differences between headphones out line out ?

2014-03-31 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W

Hi guys,
   I'm using my K3 with a Yamaha CM-500 headset.
My main activity is contesting, mainly on SSB (and some RTTY).
I am used to record my audio with the K3 line out.
Sometimes (when I have some spare time) I listen to the recorded audio.
What I've found is that many times the recorded audio (from line out)
especially on heavy-QRM situations appears to be clearer (I mean more
comprensible to the ear) than it was from the headphones.

My doubts are about the rx-equalizer.
Are the two audio the same (do they both pass through the same audio
chain and/or rx equalizer) or are they different somehow?
I specify that my RX equalizer is NOT flat at the moment, but tries to
eliminate the first two low audio bands and rolls off some dB at 3.2KHz.

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] Cheap headphones

2013-04-09 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W
If anyone in EU decides to make a group buy of some CM500 headphones,
please let me know, I am interested in buying one.
I already have one for my K3 but another one would be welcome!

Thanks

 Dave G3TJP,

Re your post on non-availability of cheap headphones, the Yamaha CM500 is
undoubtedly a preferred choice but is unavailable in Europe - the US
suppliers won't ship it to Eu either. A good alternative I found for my K3,
is the Koss SB/45, which is quite comfortable during long periods of
contest operation and has an excellent quality electret mic. It's currently
 £20.98 free postage on Amazon.

[Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw - suggestions needed

2012-12-26 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W

Hi guys,
today I decided to try to apply a mod (Audio Low Pass filter) to my
beloved K3.

My K3 was born in September, 2009 and I bought it factory assembled.
Up till now, I just added a couple of additional filters and the KV3A
board; so, I never unassembled the front panel before.

Today I found that one of the upper front panel screws was probably
overtightened (or defective).
I tried to unscrew the screw with several phillips screwdrivers (little
and big), to no avail.

The side effect of my (unsuccessful) tentatives was that:
1) I was not able to unscrew the screw
2) now the screw head is damaged (see pic at
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/V1aTCoSq5qkgs3y-beE_DdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink)

I got to unassemble the front panel unscrewing a couple of screws more,
but I'd like to solve this little problem (moreover, it's ugly).
Before going with some more destructive methods (I am thinking about
drilling the screw??), I'd like to have some savy suggestion from the
community...
Moreover, do you know if Elecraft has an additional screw kit available
(I don't need the stainless steel ones)?

As a side note, I found that almost all the flat-head screws were very
soft and damage-prone (differently from the other round-head screws).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,
73 Ciao

Hi guys,
for the same reason I think that rolling off at least the first TXEQ

flat in data mode, and not modifiable.

Could this be an useful addition to a new firmware release?

The problem is that the transformers are unshielded (and un-needed, but
that's another discussion), and unshielded transformers are sitting
ducks for magnetic fields. The simplest solution is to roll off the low
end using TXEQ, which is a good move anyway. Most of the what comes
through a mic picking up speech below about 150 Hz is breath pop,
handling noise, and room noise, and nothing below about 400 Hz
contributes to speech intelligibility. So a smart operator will use
TXEQ to kill everything below about 300-400 Hz. TXEQ makes that easy,
and it kills the hum picked up by the transformer.

[Elecraft] Preparing for HamRadio fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany

2012-05-23 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W
Hi guys,
I'm in the process of preparing myself (psychologically and
economically HI) for the next HamRadio fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany.
I was wondering if Elecraft will be there (I think and hope so, of
course) and if some good Elecraft stuff will be on sale there.
It would be a nice way to have some precious Elecraft stuff and add-ons
for us on this side of the pond without paying the expensive postal
rates from USA to EU.

Anyone can shed some light on this?
Maybe Eric and/or someone in the Elecraft staff?

Thank you very much

I found the OQRS button just below the log search results.
If you are a Clublog user you can have the date and time fields of the

Then you are redirected to the Paypal site where you can pay for the

Nice idea, Barry, but probably continuously flashing something on the

Maybe flashing the 'F' of the AGC on the display, or something similar.
That should be straightforward and doesn't require any physical
modification to the rig.

I agree with you, Jorge.
Could the unused RJ-45 connector in the K3 front panel (used for

This way it should work as other radios with detachable front panels in

Re: [Elecraft] Using WriteLog to control KDVR3

2011-04-04 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W
Jack,
to add another macro you can add any Macro_xx command and use the
same number in the Writelog window (Rig command number must match
Macro number). I think (but I didn't try) you can use any unused number
in the Macro_ line.

Regarding Auto-CQ, I think you have to experiment a little with the
delay in the window; Writelog just sends a command to the K3, but has no
way to know how long the message lasts. You want to use not too low a
number so that the new command is sent by Writelog after the first
message has ended.
Try starting with a pretty high number then you will find the correct
value based on the recorded message.

 Hi Jack,
 sorry for the delay.
I checked the problem... but here it works with Writelog 10.84D.

 1) I have the following:

 [Elecraft_K3_commands]
 Macro_10=SWT21;

in the \WINDOWS\Writelog.ini file. I am using Win XP. I don't think
its position inside the file could change the behavior, as long as you
 put it all together.

 2) In Writelog, click on Tools / Keyboard shortcuts and assign the F01
key to Rig1Command(n) and put 10 in the Rig Command Number field.

 3) Please check that your Elecraft K3 is configured as Rig #1 in the
Setup / Ports menu. This means that it has to be the first line in the
window, and that the serial port has to be the correct one.

I hope that this can resolve your problems!

Hi Fred,
I used it just one time but it seems to work ok.
I went to Writelog Keyboard shortcuts and then assigned the key F1 to
Rig1Command(n) , Rig Command Number 10.

Then, I edited the Writelog.ini file in C:\Windows, adding the following
lines:

[Elecraft_K3_commands]
Macro_10=SWT21;

This way, when I press F1 on my keyboard, the DVR starts sending the
message recorded in memory #1. This can be automated by using the Timed
CQ function inside Writelog.

Bye,
Fabio

Has anyone used WriteLog to trigger the KDVR3? According to Steve, N9OH
(WriteLog), it is possible now with WL version 10.80 by inserting a K3 macro
into writelog.ini file and the designating a control key (i.e. F10.)

It seems likely, then, that every time you tap the control key you will
send the macro to the K3. Does this mean that the same macro will be invoked
regardless of whether the K3 is in SSB or CW?
