Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output

David,

I wonder when we will see the wider bandwidth option appear?

It would be nice to see the whole amateur band of interest to see quickly what
is happening on the CW and SSB portions of the band.

I agree. Sharing a screen with say N1MM for example would work for me. Having

Based on 2 responses to my query about the P3 display, I would have to
say this is an absolute design disaster. It kills completely my interest
in the product. I had envisioned a hardware card that would communicate
with software running on the PC, not something that required a dedicated
monitor. I think the product needs some serious re-thinking.

  Well, now:

I spy a USB socket and what appears to be an Ethernet socket above and below
the VGA socket on this board...

Pray tell, does the USB socket indicate the ability to plug a
mouse/trackball in so as to enable "point and click" on the VGA screen and
QSY the radio a la Flex?

And what feature does the Ethernet socket provide? Would it be a telnet feed
to an external port connected to a computer running Skimmer Server?

Just being able to display a "big" representation of the P3 display on a
monitor is like kissing my sister... Having the two above features would be
  like kissing Jennifer Aniston.

And, as an operator who prefers entering contests "Un-assisted", the ability
to map the mouse/trackball action in a "Picture in a Picture" capable
monitor overlaid with my contest log display would extend the Jen Aniston
alegory to having her hold my hand as she leads me into a

room at the Sybaris hotel in Chicago...

Enquiring minds want to know the feature set before clicking on the order
  blank.

The more I look at it, it looks like it happens on all bands where VFOs are
on different bands but maybe only at those spans.
Of course one could turn of the b VFO marker until the VFOs are on the same

With several known issues with corrosion or bad contact being made with the

I wonder if there different types of connectors out there that are perhaps less

  Hey Gents,

I am about a week away from my one year as a licensed amateur. I want to
thank all of you for allowing me to be a part of the crew. It has been a blast!
I have been totally enjoying this fun hobby and it is made even cooler because
of the camaraderie and friendships that I have made with each of you.

This hobby has it all. Satisfaction of completion (like awards, getting that
new grid square/entity), technical challenges (getting the nut to tune),
intellectually exploration (debate about antennas, baluns, solar cycles, etc),
and even physical labor components (tower erections, field day, antenna mods &
moves). All in all you can't ask for a more interesting and intriguing hobby.

Anyhow as this first year comes to a close, I am appreciative and grateful
for friends and family who are always there to lend a hand or give a gentle
word of advice. I hope and pray that each of you and your families have an
awesome holiday season and as we look onto the new year ahead that we continue
to have new accomplishments, overcome new technical and intellectual challenges
and erect some new towers (Monroe, others).

  Warm Regards,

Richard,

Not necessaryily so...the CM-500 does accentuate the lows rather nicely BUT
when sigs are down, atmospherics rise...it does help to drop the low end
response. Tweaking the highs up also helps.

IF you have near perfect hearing, flat on the RX EQ works OK so I am told by

Re: [Elecraft] Rusting screws

2011-12-07 Thread Gary VK4FD
Elecraft should just cost all equipment usiing the SS screws and get over it
and move on.

The painted screws simply demean the appearance of the equipment and it looks
pretty awful I reckon.

Enuff said..SS screws on all products PLEASE?

I agree and used the SS on the K3 kit because I knew that the rig would go
seaside and to Hawaii a few times. Not available for the P3 or KPA500.

My suggestion is to simply send out ONLY SS screws (even if US$15 more) and
it becomes a non-issue. All kits/builds, all metal screws, all stainless.
  Simpler to stock too.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Twin with Remoterig

2011-12-07 Thread Gary VK4FD
Liked it better when it had a balanced line connection as part of the unit.

There are plenty of 4:1 Baluins on the market already.

Without knowing what this Auto-Tuner will do it is indeed hard to judge whether
it will be a product that rates a "Must Have" over "just another ATU"....

YMMV

  Doug,

You and anyone else having specific Elecraft Twin questions should post
your questions directly on the Microbit (RemoteRig) forum at:
  <http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php>

to answer question 2: The remote K3 becomes your local K3. You are
essentially using the local one only as a control panel for the remote
K3, so of course the audio and other settings will be that of the remote
  K3.

to answer question 3: You will find the directions on page 167 of the
  latest RemoteRig manual at <http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=97>
If you have any further questions, just post a message on their forum,
or drop me a note and I can help you directly.

full CW for both main and sub on both K3s, to have AF gain on the "remote" K3
set at 12 o'clock for both main and sub and then use the audio controls on the
"local" K3 for final admjustments. BTW I'm running the two channels of AF

separate speakers and the line outputs go to an old IBM PIII-600 running XP SP3

It's useful for checking your transmit equalization with a specific
voice and microphone. At N1AL, I discovered that I had way too much
bass so I adjusted the K3's TX equalizer to make it flatter.

As Joe says, it does not include the effects of amplifier distortion.
And as Knut says, the signal level depends on random leakage through the
mixer and PIN diodes, so it varies with band, drive level settings, and
sample-to-sample variation of the particular K3. There's no guarantee
that there will be enough signal available to be useful. That's the
main reason I resist making it an "official" feature.

2011-12-06 Thread Gary VK4FD
I believe we have enough 'features' on all radios manufactured today and we
have legal obligations to stay within the bands pertaining to the various
licences etc.

If you do the MARS mod...where do you want the band edges to be?seems like
your outside the 'normal' band usage so the accepted band edges would be of
limited benefit?

I would rather see engineering and code development put into hardware and FW
that improves the specification of the product rather than eye candy....YMMV

Yes I think band edge markers (tones) on the K3 are a good idea. Why not
have them as an audible reinforcement that you've crossed the band edge?
Those who don't want them should be able to turn them off. Their absence was

Subject: [Elecraft] Internal tuner vs. 2m module?

Somewhere along my readings I heard something about possibly adding 2m later
down the road in the KX3 and that it would be optional whether you want the
tuner OR the 2m module. I am taking that to mean that both modules will not
fit under the hood of the KX3.

There have been several K2 op's that have remote mounted the 100w module
outside of the case of the K2 to allow a 10w portable rig or a desk-top 100w
rig. Just because the module is intended to be an "internal" addition
doesn't mean there isn't a way to put it "outside the box".

That brings me to my question:
How hard would it be to remote mount the tuner? I would greatly benefit from
having 2m in the rig as I am a backpacker and that would let me have an
all-in-one rig. I also like to use jumper dipoles so for the most part I
have a resonant antenna with me and don't need the tuner function. However,
for other portable operations it would be nice to have the tuner such as
when I fly out for conferences or training - pack it all in a suit case and
  off I go!

An even better addition to 2m - make the receive capabilities cover the
adjacent VHF spectrum, specifically up through 163mHz to cover the NOAA
weather stations. This is a huge help after 2 days in the back country.
Also, if the module can have repeater capabilities that would be great
(probably a stupid question/suggestion as all all-mode 2m rigs do).

behoves us, the operators, to exercise our knowledge of the equipment rather
than expect the manufacturer to do all the work for us.:-)

Having said that I seem to 'discover' a feature long forgotten about when I
have not used it for some timeh, the brain plays tricks on us old
dinosaurs eh?

  Tony,

The power level is displayed if you change the Power knob even a small
amount - just rotate he knob a little to see the current power.

The bandwidth graphic already shows the bandwidth in use. While it has
some granularity, it is still a good indicator of the DSP bandwidth.
The exact bandwidth and/or high-cut, low-cut frequencies (or
Shift/Width) are shown in the VFO B display when a change is made. I
think what you are requesting is already there.

The balanced output is not referenced to the case. So the balun is functional
when feeding
a balanced line, not shorted as you suggest. However, you are correct that it
will not
serve as a common mode choke with unbalanced output. And Paul's comments
about the
placement of the balun are correct. I was surprised to see this from Alpha,
whom I would
  have expected to know better.

I suppose I'll have to wait for the KAT1500 (no, no such product has been
announced or
hinted at as far as I know!)

Re: [Elecraft] Heathkit Ham Products

2011-09-15 Thread Gary VK4FD
Ron,

As Elecraft have shown the way with many innovative designs and have leapt to
the fore in manufacturing many fine amateur radio products, it is not to be
unexpected that eventually another company will try to cash in on the perceived
market to generate revenue for their business.

Will Heathkit be able to produce kits to compare with Elecraft's quality and
performance?...not likely, History will show that it is a rare occurrance for a
rival to seriously compete when you consider that Elecraft have some of the
brightest minds under one roof (umbrella) hard at work to bring us future proof
designs, outstanding quality and technically superior products.

Elecraft is not an amazing company when you look closely at their employees.
They are driven by two of the best minds in amateur radio and supported by a
dedicated team of engineers, talented and thoughtful team members and have a
great group of enthusistic customers questioning each design and offering
refinements in a positive way.

It is the way in which Elecraft interact with their customer base that enables
them to stay at the very cutting edge of design and further enhances their
reputation as an industry leader.

Heathkit have a 'history' certainly, but that history has not always been 'the
best', rather, some of their products are most forgettable and so I don't
expect their products will be 'ground breaking' nor do I expect them to see a
massive influx of orders in the short term. We (HAM's) are a picky bunch and
they will need to work very hard to earn their stripes in a very competitive
business environment.

The hype that Heathkit have generated may well be short lived. They will have
some very serious work to do if they expect to rival Elecraft. Wayne and Eric
have done much for amateur radio. It is not just their designs and business
acumen at work here, they are genuine believers in Amateur Radio, the
interaction with their customer base is extraordinary in this day and age where
companies are chasing every dollar to add to the bottom line with little or no
regard to customer service (Telco's for example?) whilst Elecraft strive to be
inclusive, discuss openly enhancements, provide an extremely supportive voice
to all their customers and the proof is in the eating of the pudding...Grin

Pass the Kool - Aid folks

I wish Heathkit well but hold out little hope that any 'New Generation'
products will be forthcoming. Future goodies I leave to Eric and Wayne to dream
up. My job is to save them dang pennies. (Honey?, you got some more change I
can have please?)

At the risk of reawakening this thread too much, I see an ARRL announcement
that Heath has decided to enter the Ham radio market due to a strong
  response from potential customers:

"Wake (Heathkit's Director of Sales and Marketing) said that Heathkit is
presently working on developing a few Amateur Radio kits. 'Initially, the
kit line will include a few accessories, like kits for a Dual Watt Meter,
Antenna Tuners and the Cantenna,' he explained. 'Once we are a little more
settled, I think we will develop a QRP receiver.' "

I'm not sure what they mean by a "QRP Receiver" since QRP work generally
requires at least as good a receiver as most QRO activities. I suspect it
means a moderate or low performance receiver.

YEPI was one of the very first t order the 'International' version when
first released. When I called they did not have stock but expected their first
shipment in the coming week so I odered two (2) of them.

Both units are in daily use and have never let me down...oh no, I should not
have siad that huh?

I have also not noticed any birdies or RF hash with either unit and for me the
small footprint has been a proven winner.

I recently purchased the SS-30DV switcher. There are 2
stickers on the outside of the box that say it is an
International Model and you need to change it to 115V AC
input by sliding the selector on the back. The manual (one
sheet) clearly states in the first sentence of a paragraph
titled "Input Voltage Selection" that "The power supply is
set up for 230V AC input as shipped from the factory." It
continues with a description about how to change it to 115V
AC. I can't find it now, but I'm sure there was also a
separate insert on bright paper warning that it was set for
  230V AC.
