Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal

2015-11-24 Thread Gene Gabry
I wonder if this phenomenon could be related to N1MM+. I have never seen
this happen before (without N1MM+ running). I was using N1MM+ logging with a
lot of functions running. That might explain the delay. Interesting.

Gene N9TF

The K3 is supposed to send a command to the P3 to tell it whether it is in
transmit or receive mode. Apparently sometimes that isn't happening for
some reason. It could be an intermittent RS-232 connection between the K3
and the P3 or perhaps some software running on a PC is overloading the
RS-232 with tons of commands.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal

2015-11-24 Thread Gene Gabry
I noticed this a few times as well with my K3S and P3. When it happened, I
was running a frequency, and I would go into TX sometimes before the P3
would unfreeze and the P3 would display my TX peak, following my modulation.
Seemed to maybe happen at some transition of the P3 going back to RX when I
keyed the microphone. Also noticed sporadic freeze decay of P3 after
stopping TX. Most times it switched to RX right away, but sometimes it hung
up for a second or two. I thought I was seeing things!

Any ideas out there?

I noticed this weekend that occasionally during transmit instead of the scan
freezing in place it would continue scanning showing only my transmit signal

I don't have the P3TXMON. It never did this before.

I was viewing the external SVGA monitor.

Any idea why?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal

2015-11-25 Thread Gene Gabry
Just wanted to share this tip from Al, as it worked. Although, I started by
reducing the polling by 50% first, and that did it. Ran a bunch of CQs with
quick TX/RX switching and all N1MM+ functions running, and no freeze ups. Still
don't know what path switched though on three of those hang ups over the
weekend when I saw my TX signal in the P3 without the P3TXMON.

Thanks for the info Al.

Gene, you can tell N1MM+ to reduce the Radio Polling rate.

Go to Config --> Configure Ports, Mode Control, Audio, Other...

On the Hardware tab, click on the Set button for your K3 port and then select
"100% Slower" from the Radio Polling list. This may help.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] 6M power setting anomaly

2015-12-20 Thread Gene Gabry
Hi Vic,

I have the K3S with 5.33 firmware and see what you see. I believe this is
normal. Page 9 of the manual (Transmitter - output power) implies 6 meters
will be lower power max, although 106 watts is never actually stated. Based
on the statements of a lower max setting for 6 meters in this specification,
it would be a reasonable assumption the max power setting would be something
lower than 10-160m. Also, when setting CONFIG:PWR SET NOR, 6 meters will
operate independent of the other HF bands. Supporting some difference on 6
meters.
I actually thought I saw a thread some time ago from Wayne or Eric
confirming the difference in MAX power sets on 6 meters compared to the rest
of the HF bands, but have not been able to find.

This is strange. Firmware 5.33. On 6 meters when the PWR control is turned
all the way up, the VFO B display only reads 106 watts. On all other bands
it is 110 watts.

I know that the actual maximum power output might vary per band, but
shouldn't the PWR control set the requested power to 110 watts on all bands?

Do others have the same result?

In ARRL DX, convert cut numbers and enter real numbers. The letter
abbreviations like K and KW can be left as is in your log. If you get '1K',
you can enter that as is, too. Log checking will accommodate all these.

I've even had someone send 1OO with the letter "oh" instead of zeroes.
Should I log and submit the carbrillo file with these cut numerals as they

Re: [Elecraft] K3S audio board for K3 upgrade?

2016-03-22 Thread Gene Gabry
This has been an interesting thread to which I have experimented a bit more
and found the AGC setting recommendations from a couple of posters to be
very valuable, and Eric's suggestions on BW settings to be a nice compliment
to play with. Although, my ears still like a little HF, I like the sound of
a BW from 100hz to 2.7khz for SSB and usually the 500hz filter set to 300hz
with DSP. I now have AGC THR set to max and AGC SLP set to 0. I also set RX
EQ to flat and use hi/lo cut when needed. Really cuts down on the high
frequency hash I get from this qth. I leave the AGC settings the same for
SSB and CW and play with BW and cut between the two modes, depending on
conditions.

I've never ever put any stock into any manufacturers built in speakers. They
are there cause they have to be :) For the K3S I use a combination of a pair
of Polk Audio 5 1/4" book shelf speakers (60hz-24kz) and Pyle Pro 3" mini
cube speakers (90hz -18khz), per channel, and the sound is crisp and clear
audio. And, both speaker sets are black to match the K3S and all together
for all 4 speakers cost was $75.00 and change.

The AGC settings were a big game changer to these old ears.

Yes, excellent AF response, very nice for recording, but massive overkill. I
have a pair as well. BUT -- they are also RFI dogs. Keying a 5W 2M talkie
across the room will cause their woofers to move enough that you'll clearly
see it, and they're also susceptible at some HF frequencies.

Jim,

Like I implied in my posting, portable operation is often more about
convenience than signal strength.

Your estimate of around 7 dB sounds reasonable. That's about 1.5 S-units, to
use the vernacular. When a band is open, this loss still allows a lot of
contacts to be made.

Example: A couple of months ago my son and I were doing a bit of hiking/bird
watching at Redwood Shores. While Griffin stalked hooded mergansers with his
camera, I quickly set up my KX3 at a picnic table. I attached the whip with
a right-angle BNC, along with the 13' counterpoise wire. 20 meter CW was
very active with EU contest stations, most of them probably running a KW
("or so"). I called several of them running 5 W, and worked most of them on
one call.

I may have been down 7 dB from a full-size vertical, but I got through
nonetheless. And I didn't have to frighten any birds away with my usual
weight-tossing wild-west antenna deployment routine.

Sometimes size doesn't matter.

hand-held at 3 to 5 W (internal battery).

single quarter-wave radial laying on the ground, and compared it with a
quarter-wave vertical (16.7 ft) with the same single radial. The model is
for poor soil, which is typical of most mountainous QTHs. The full-size
quarter-wave will be 7.4 dB louder than the shortened one. That's equivalent
to reducing a 15W signal to 3W. The difference is slightly greater over
better than average ground. The reduced efficiency is due to the greatly
reduced radiation resistance of the shortened antenna.
>

antennas work BETTER. If you can afford the weight of a means to support the

better.

For me, the AFX option was a real "WOW" experience. Over the years I have

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SP3 External Speaker details

2015-09-15 Thread Gene Gabry
Johnny,

Are you sure that's not a knock off at that price? With the yen devalued,
hovering around 120:1(USD), I would think it would be more expensive in Japan
than what it sells for in the US. I've been to Akihabara many times, and I
would tend to question its authenticity. I'll be back there this October, and
will check it out.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s USB built in sound card

2015-09-18 Thread Gene Gabry
Works great! I'm only doing RTTY and PSK31 here. MMTTY through N1MM+ when in
contest mode, "AFSK A" digital mode K3S. When not in N1MM+ contest for rag
chew MMTTY straight through K3S "AFSK A". PSK31, running DATA A mode in K3S
with older version of Digipan. Plug and play, love it!

Good information David. I also Have a 80m OCF

and choosing the correct balun and RF choke is paramount. I went with the
(W2FMI design) Com-BAL-41130ET 4:1 current balun. A bit pricy at $100.00,
but worth every buck. I also added a 10 turn RF choke at the feed point.
Absolutely no RF back to the shack on any of the 7 bands it is resonate on.
Only running 100 watts, but antenna is low hanging at 35' with only about
50' of coax feeding from shack.

Yes, I can confirm K9CT uses BP filters on his 6700's. His main reason for
switching to mostly 6700's at his contest station was for the "simplicity"
of being able to operate SO2R or multi -2 without the need for all the
access cables and extras required with the K3 set up. The WiFi ability that
comes with the Maestro made networking wireless as well. I believe he still
uses a K3S or two at his home station and uses K3S's on DXpeditions.

There are conditions and reasons where each platform can win, with proper
configurations, tools and expectations.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY

2016-05-01 Thread Gene Gabry
Wes,

I am also curious of any issues that might be unresolved? I've been using
the sound card in the K3S with N1MM+ and MMTTY as the engine, and it's been
plug and play since day one. I don't use VOX to key, as either with MMTTY by
itself or with N1MM+, I use the PTT line, and all is good.
Just curious what I might need to watch for?

Can you be more specific? I was able to set the audio transmit and receive
levels without problem (at least I think so), and the VOX level too for use
with MMTTY standalone (I use PTT with N1MM+/MMTTY).

What else should I be looking for?

Thank you.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?

Same thing happens here with K3S SN 10057. I have no digital SW running or rig
control at the time of power down. If I set PTT to DTR and power down for some
period of time, PTT defaults back to OFF when power up. Always done that since
day one. I thought there was some update done in latest firmware to PTT-KEY
line to default those to OFF so when PC was restarted K3S would not go into TX?

Do a test without WSJT running. Set PTT key config to DTR - OFF, then cycle
power on the K3S. Does that setting survive the power cycle? If so, it is not
a K3S problem, look to the WSJT software for the solution.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?

2016-05-23 Thread Gene Gabry
Check the updates to latest firmware version. There is a safe mode and Unsafe
mode for the PTT-Key line. In Unsafe mode PTT-Key line should not turn off.

* PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: PC applications can activate PTT and
KEY at the K3S via the USB port's RTS/DTR signals. However, initial setup of
the rig's USB port by the PC may cause pulsed or continuous activation of the
transmitter. This can happen if the computer is turned on after the K3S, or if
the USB cable is not connected. There is now a "Safe" mode (the default) which
disables PTT-KEY transmit until the K3S receives a command via USB, such as a
read of the rig's VFO frequency. To turn on safe mode on/off, go into
CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap '1' to select "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE". Exit the menu and
turn the K3S off/on. Applications that use PTT-KEY via USB but never send
commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted transmit can be
avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S.

[Elecraft] K3S Macro command XIT

2016-07-07 Thread Gene Gabry
Hi

I'm finally diving into setting up command macros, and most are successful.
I thought there was a way to not only turn on XIT, but to also be able to
set an up or down offset. I've tried several different command combinations,
but no luck. XIT turns on but no offset.

Is there not a command string that turns on XIT and allows an UP or DN
offset?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Macro command XIT

2016-07-07 Thread Gene Gabry
Thanks Wayne! That did it. I don't know how I missed that command string.
This phase of the K3S is all pretty much Greek to me, and I've read over the
programming manual several times trying to absorb it all before
experimenting. After a year of pushing buttons and turning knobs, I am
finally writing commands for functions I use most and want a one touch
button to get there fast.

Thanks again and 73

To set a specific RIT/XIT offset, you can use the RO command. From the
programmer's reference:

   SET format: ROs

where s is +/- and is -. s can also be a space in lieu of +.

[Elecraft] K3S Macro Command MICSEL question

2016-07-13 Thread Gene Gabry
I am wondering if there is a more direct command to toggle between the MIC
SEL FP and MIC SEL RP other than having to use the UP/DN command? These are
the two command statements I am using to switch between the two with FP.H
being the normal home position.

To switch to RP (Bias and H already activated) = MN053;UP;CP015;MG003;MN255;

To switch back to FP.H (H already activated) = MN053;DN;CP018;MG025;MN255;

Is there another command or address to directly activate the actual mic
location other than toggling MN up and down? I just want to switch between
those two locations.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] QSLs

2016-07-26 Thread Gene Gabry
I think what Jorge might have been inferring is, LOTW doesn't have the same
capability as a log checker would to make a judgment that a two way contact
could not have been made on 160m between a station in Chicago at 12 noon
Chicago time and say Australia. What's to say a couple hams might have
coordinated together to falsely upload a contact as mentioned to finish off
an award? The times and frequency and calls match, confirmed contact. Most
hams would not even think of doing this. But, just as is the human condition
in life, cheating happens. I'm sure it happens to some % in the ham
community as well.

LOTW runs on GMT (UTC). If you keep your log in UTC, all will be confirmed.
Except, of course, for a few stations that don't get it right. But that is
rare.
