Re: [Elecraft] Grounding KPXA100 in RV Question

2016-04-10 Thread George Cortez via Elecraft
I do it with mine and its not grounded. Just locate the antenna away from your
transmitter. I run a 600w amp also.I use a portable antenna and about 75 feet
of coax when I have the space. Plus its better on your RX as those inverters
are pretty noisy. Try and keep it away from that as far as possible.

 Hello All,

I will be using my KXPA100, KX3 and PX3 while in my RV.  I do not plan on
operating while the vehicle is in motion.  I am planning on only operating
the station while connected to 120V mains or when the Generator is running.
I will power the system with a Powerwerx SPS-30DM.  I typically operate my
station with the power supply in fixed voltage mode.  The meter shows 14.1
to 14.3 volts when operating.  This should provide 100 watts output from the
KPXA100.

My question is regarding grounding requirements for the KPXA100.  I assume
that the amp needs to be grounded to the vehicle frame.  If the engine is
not running, will grounding the amp to the frame cause any problems with the
vehicle 12V system, or the separate 12Vbattery system that powers all 12 V
system in the RV?  While operating the generator but powering through the
Powerwerx supply be an issue?

When I am using a vertical antenna, I will ground one side to the vehicle
chassis.  Will the antenna and amp grounded to the same system cause
problems?

What would be the downside to not grounding the KPXA100 as long as the
antenna is grounded to the frame, or if using a doublet, not having the
antenna grounded to the frame.

I have not operated mobile HF before so I am a novice at this.  The RV is a
2005 model on a Chevy truck chassis.

Thanks for the help.

[Elecraft] Aviation Headset and the KX3

2015-09-04 Thread George Cortez via Elecraft
Hi GangI love using a Heil headset with the KX3 but wanted to try something
with a little more build quality.I have my old Bose X Aviation headset from my
flying days and set them up for the General Aviation plugs. They are really
comfortable well made and have active noise canceling built in. I have used
computer headsets with the K3 and the KX3 in the past and they have worked
fine.I tried this adapter from
sportys.comhttps://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/general-aviation-twin-plugs-to-pc-headset-adapter.html?___SID=U
It works fine with the KX3 and I get good audio reports. Just remember to
unplug it after use as the plugs are the power switch for the adapter. Its a
lot of cable but the adapter is solidly built and looks like it would last a
good long time. You need to turn on the bias in the KX3 for any pc headset to
work. Im sure David Clark GA headsets would work as well but I haven't tried
them yet. Im tired of the old Head clamps anyway.

Re: [Elecraft] Miniature self-supporting HF antennas

2015-07-19 Thread George Cortez via Elecraft
I use two different portable antennas, One is the super antennas yp3 3 element
antenna and the other is the TW 2010 antenna. If i'm going to be portable for a
while Ill put the 3 element antenna up. Its pretty fiddly and changing bands is
a pain. Its one band at a time. The performance is very good and it really
lightweight and small to pack. The TW antenna works great and takes 5 minutes to
set up. In a nutshell it's a DX antenna. Distant stations are worked with
amazing frequency for such a small antenna. Its my favorite portable. Its
actually larger to pack than the 3 element without the mast. However, that
fades when its quickly set up and working. Like any antenna, keep them away
from noise sources and in the clear and the results will be good.

Usefulness of any 10 meter antenna is declining. :-)

FWIW:
My Buddipole weighed 17 lbs, and I sold it and used the proceeds to get
an AlexLoop.  It weighs about 1.6 lbs, less if I take it out of the neat
canvas case, 2 lbs with the lightweight tripod.  I like it a lot.  I can
set it up in less than 5 min, it is pretty much immune to anyone's
definition of "ground," and it works very well.  Touchy to tune on 40,
not so bad on 30 and easy on 20 and the rest.  Very narrow BW, I sit
under it so I can reach up and tune it using the K2 SWR indication.
It's pricey, but you can make one yourself for about 1/10th the cost.
Just remember, these guys are resonant transformers and MUST be at
resonance so bypass the ATU.

The EFHW is very popular with the SOTA crowd, extremely light, only
needs one support.  Mine works best with a 6" pigtail hanging off the
shield of the BNC connector.  They too seem to be fairly immune to
"ground," low current down where you are.

My meager experience is that any antenna you can make resonant will
probably perform a little better than a random wire, but I've made a lot
of KX1 Q's with a 26 ft wire and counterpoise made from a piece of RG-58.

KT5X believes [and I don't disagree] that vertical ground planes on
mountain tops tend to radiate downhill which isn't real useful.  If
you're above the timberline, you're probably on a mountain.

Tom,

If you can adjust your power supply to 14.0 volts, it should work a little
better. I bought my K2 battery with the K2 in 1999 (S/N 462), and it still
is as good as new. I also bought a Power Sonic 0.5 amp automatic charger,
and it floats the battery all the time. It charges the battery at a
constant current until 14.4 volts is reached, then maintains a constant
voltage until the battery is charged as sensed by the current decreasing to
a small value, then floats the battery at about 13.8 volts. My perception
is that if the battery is not topped off at 14.4 volts it never is fully
charged, but it may reach full charge if floated at 13.8 volts
constantly. It just takes longer to reach full charge.

[Elecraft] 160 module fustration

2005-06-07 Thread George Cortez

Hi folks

Im starting to wonder if the 160 module is bad.
The antenna switch only works if it is in preamp mode
If the preamp is switched on with the r ant on the r ant will not
switch off or on.

Also large attenuation of signals when it is on the standard
antenna. When switched to the r ant with an antenna on the r ant
signals are strong. When switched to the standard antenna with an
antenna still attached to the r ant, signals are still strong.

I hear relays clicking ( I was not hearing that before) but I fear
that the relays contacts are shorted. It has already been replaced once
and the board cant take much more abuse. This was a brand new module.
also replaced the relay driver chip and the mcu. There is nothing else!

I think im going to get another 160 module and start over.
Its cheap enough.

Hi All

Saturday night Eric had a sneak peak After the wouff hong ceremony in
the crown plaza.

The QRO amp was there operating into a dummy load.
He said that it is still in the testing stage but it looked really good.
Kind of reminded me of an alpha 87
in size and packaging. He asked that no pictures be taken because
the cosmetics were not finalized.

Some of the features mentioned were
A true SO2R amp with 2 radio inputs (listen on one rig while TX qro on
the other at the same time)

switched by so2r box or computer software program.
800 watt version with 50 watt drive requirement.
a 1500 watt version with just a doubling of the splitter combiner and PA
section. Also an external switching power

supply for the 1500 watt version. Internal SW PS for 800 watt version
Kit and Finished version will be available. Maybe sometime in January 06.
Prices to be determined.

[Elecraft] 160rx switch problem

2005-04-17 Thread George Cortez

Hi folks
The 160 switch I installed has some problems.
I can hear out of the rx antenna but nothing out of the
tx side. switching via front panel does nothing. no relay click.
It did work at first but it quit on me after a few actuations.
I took it back out and checked and resoldered.
and it came back, only to die again after a few actuations.
Jumpered the plug in the rf board and it seems to be ok.
I resoldered the plug in the rf board just in case.
The 160 rx and tx is ok.
I am at wits end and I may consider replacing the relay.
Anything else to check?

[Elecraft] #4801 Thank you for the help!

2005-04-10 Thread George Cortez

Thanks all for your help
The problem lies with my skills at aligning the bfo filters and just
plain old

not understanding the proceedure fully. It took about 2 hrs for research and
alignment time to get it right. well at least 20hz away..I could
get it closer but

on air reports are good and I want to use it!

This reflector is the best!

RE: [Elecraft] K2 #4830 IS ALIVE

2005-03-26 Thread George Cortez

Hi
I checked all you said and the voltage still wont move
I ohmed the t5 out and its about 350ohm across from 1-2 to 3-4
all else looks good. 80&40 are the same voltage
20/17 are under 4.5v 15 is the same as 80/40 abt 7.95v
12/10 under 5.5v I think t5 will have to be rewound?
What do you think?

George

Hi George:

To get a 12 uH L31, get in touch with Gary, or Parts, or Support at
Elecraft. I'm sure they will ship you one out right away. Here is quote from
an email I got from Gary about this issue: "We are in the process of
switching over to the 12uH choke until the current lot of PLL crystals is
used up. Most of them so far have shown slightly lower than needed range
with the 10uH choke."

The most probable cause of being unable to adjust the VCO voltage with L30,
assuming correct installation of T5, L30, C72, and the PLL temp comp board,
is having the 1-2 (red wire) windings on T5 too bunched up. Check that they
are spread out around the 'roid like shown in the picture. You don't need to
uninstall T5 to do this... Just use the green tuning stick that comes with
the K2 to slide the windings on the 'roid. If there is no voltage change at
all when you adjust L30 (also change bands to see if the voltage is
different on another band), then you need to check for a short, solder
bridge on or in the vicinity of the l'il PLL temp compensation board that
you put together. It is very easy to create a l'il solder bridge or short on
that l'il guy.

Good Luck!!!

73,
Ken K3IU
