I tuned across the carrier at 0330 local. Just checked and I do not hear it
now. I could hear it over 5 hours constantly.

[Elecraft] K2 For sale

2017-03-04 Thread Glenn Haffly
The following K2 is for sale: Serial # 7429 with the following options:
K160 RX 160 meter and receive antenna , KNB2 noise blanker and KDSP2 DSP
filter. The DSP filter is no longer available. Included are all manuals
plus the alignment probe , Alignment tool , RF probe for troubleshooting
and a power plug. Case is a 9 out of 10 . Rig has not been exposed to any
smokers.
Current CW filter widths are 1.55 K , 700 , 400 and 100 . Filters aligned
with Spectrogram. The 4 MHZ oscillator aligned with a frequency counter.
The only reason for selling is I have another K2 as a built rig and another
K2 in kit form.

I will throw in an assembled KSB2 SSB option. This was not built by me nor
is it installed in this rig. Board appears to be completely assembled but ,
I have no way to test it. Can only suggest to check it out carefully before
installing.

Asking $800 for all and I will ship. Paypal is OK

[Elecraft] K2 Control Board Issue

2014-05-09 Thread Glenn Haffly
Doing something I should have not done , I managed to blow up Q11on the
control board. I fixed that with a replacement from my junkbox. All
voltages are correct on control board U3. When tapping display I get a
voltage of 23.3 volts indicated from a 12 volt supply and zero current.
Further checking shows R7 on the control board is zero ohms instead of
1.78K. How important is it to replace R7
with a 1% resistor rather than something from the junkbox?
Everything else on the K2 works fine , TX and RX are OK.
Hopefully a replacement R7 will then display the correct voltage and
current.
Any input from the reflector is appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 Loss of RF outout

2013-09-19 Thread Glenn Haffly
Good afternoon all , I have K3 #2802 that has lost all RF output. One day
it was fine and the next nothing. Receive is OK.
When rotating the power knob I hear the click at 12 watts. I have heard
possible dirty contact issues between the high power module and its
contacts could cause the problem.
Before I tear into it , Wanted some opinions.

[Elecraft] K2 #7415 Build Issues

2013-03-12 Thread Glenn Haffly
I am up to page 63 of the manual which is the alignment and test part 2.

Upon initial testing there is a problem with all of the Bank 1 push
buttons. There is no effect on any of the left push buttons. The right push
buttons on Bank 2 work except for the mode switch and rate / lock switch.
All rotary switches and the encoder appear to work as the display shows the
changes. All tests on Alignment Part 1 went well with no issues.

So far , I have rechecked the entire front panel board and control boards.
All of the resistor packs are correctly installed as well as all diodes ,
transistors and IC's. Soldering was rechecked and connections
reflowed. On the control board I am getting 8 volts on U4 and 5 volts on
U5. U6 on the control board , MCU, there are two voltages wrong. Pins 18
and 25 both should be zero volts. Both measure 5 volts. There is also an
issue with U2 on the control board. Pin 8 is correct at 8 volts and pin 4
is correct with zero volts. All other pins are approximately 1/2 of
what they should be. Pins 1 , 2, 3, 5 , 6 and 7 are all approximately 3.8
volts.
U1 on the RF board voltages are correct.

I could use some guidance on where to begin.

[Elecraft] K2 Encoder Question on 7415 build

2013-02-27 Thread Glenn Haffly
I have a question on the length of the 4 wires from the encoder board to
the front panel. If they are too short the encoder is too far forward
resulting in the front panel buttons out of alignment.
Having the wires longer cures the front panel alignment but , Then the back
of the encoder board is contacting the rear of the control board. Anyone
else observed this?

[Elecraft] K3 Firmware Issue

Good evening , While trying to load 4.22 I had a momentary loss of AC power

, The only thing happening is a scroll of the various bps connection speeds.
The box to send checked items and send all new firmware to K3 are both
grayed out. I unplugged the K3 for a minute , applied power and held the
power switch in for 10 seconds with no change.

I would appreciate help getting firmware reloaded.

[Elecraft] Fw: K3 2803 Firmware Problem

2009-04-03 Thread Glenn Haffly
The problems continue with K3 #2803
The problem is still unable to load FPF or DSP firmware. MCU loads fine.
I have used two different computers in an attempt to load the firmware. On
each computer I have used the KUSB and a 9 pin straight thru serial cable.
That doesn't work.
I have reloaded the K3 utility to make sure it is the latest version and
still no luck.
In numerous e mails with Gary we thought trying a new front panel board
might work. Wrong , After installing a new front panel board same problem.
On page 63 of the owners manual if I hold in the shift / Lo knob while
turning on the power I am suppose to see EE INT. All I see is ERR EE2.

The K3 is a nice looking radio and maybe one day it will work but , Right
now , Very frustrated to say the least.

[Elecraft] Microphone and K2

2006-03-18 Thread Glenn Haffly

Have a rat shack mike with only 2 wires , an audio and ground wire.
According to mic schematic the on / off switch is parallel to the audio and
the on / off is a slide switch inside the mic.
Currently have the mic audio to pin 1 and mic ground to pins 7 and 8 at the
mic connector. I know in this configuration
there is not PTT wired. I assume I need to wire Pins 1 and 2 together at the
mic connector to get a PTT connection
to P1. What jumper settings on P1 should get this configuration to work ?
Tried several and no luck yet on any setting.

[Elecraft] Fw: K2 Problem 30/20

2005-05-06 Thread Glenn Haffly

Subject: K2 Problem 30/20

K2 # 4869 fully functional except 30/20 meters.
An external signal generator on these bands will
allow trimmers C21 and C23 to be peaked. A
strong external signal is barely heard.
Items that have been checked:
#1 L18 , L19 , L20 rechecked for proper amount
of turns and solder joints Ok.
#2 All capacitors in the LP area are the correct part
and solder joints Ok.
#3 All capacitors in the band pass filter are the correct
parts and no solder joints.
#4 Relays K4 and K9 oriented correctly.
#5 Using Don's past words check solder joints and are Ok.
#6 The correct transformers used at L8 and L9.
#7 Trimmer caps with red dots are at C21 and C23.
Observations : Placing a finger under L8 increases noise levels
and touching a screwdriver to one end of most of the caps in
the 30/20 BP area also increase the noise level to a point where
strong outside signals can be heard.
Current plans are to use the signal generator at the antenna connector
and try to see where signal stops.
All other bands are good on Rx and Tx.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

[Elecraft] K2 Problem

2005-05-06 Thread Glenn Haffly
There is a problem wih K2 # 4869.
On 30 / 20 meter bands there is no received
signal. Using an rf generator a signal can be heard.
The following have been checked :
#1 Reviewed solder joints in LP and BP areas. None found.
#2 Recounted turns on L18 , L19, L20. All correct and no cold solder joints.
#3 All caps in LP and BP correctly installed.
#4 Relays K4 and K9 installed correctly.
#5 All other bands operational on Rx and Tx.
#6 Per Don checked soldering several times.
Observations: Using the RF generator , used it as a probe in the BP area.
The
signal could be heard at every cap location either on 30 or 20 except at
C25.
C25 was replaced with a temp from the junk box. No improvement noted.
Also using a screwdriver as a probe with a finger on it in the 30/20 BP area
an improvement in signal strength noted. In tuning around on 20 there is a
birdie at 14.000 and 14.360.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

[Elecraft] K1 Voltage

2005-02-20 Thread Glenn Haffly
I have a K1 with a voltage problem on U1.
All pin voltages are correct except for pin 6 which is zero.
The schematic show C19 blocking DC to pin 6. I suppose
there is an internal connection with pin 7 that creates the
6 volts for pin 6 ? On my schematic pin 7 is not connected
to anything. Anyone recommend U1 be replaced or have I
overlooked something ?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Glenn , K5ZE

[Elecraft] K2 Control Board

2004-11-13 Thread Glenn Haffly

K2 manual in parts listing shows an R22 , an 82K resistor.
I see no reference to this in the control board assembly or a place on the
board , or I missed it.

[Elecraft] K1 Problem

2004-11-02 Thread Glenn Haffly

K1 has a problem at J8 pin 7. Specs should be 1.6K to 1.9K.

So far have found that J8 pin 7 to ground is zero. Tried reversing test
leads and the same.
P3 is jumpered pins 1 and 2. D15 anode to ground 195 ohms. D15 cathode to
ground
98.6 K. R36 in circuit 1.96 K . R37 in circuit 1.96 K. R34 in circuit 77.3 K
.

R4 in circuit 5.4K . Pin 19 of P1 is 104.2K
All of these are with a 4 band filter removed.
This probably explained why I am unable to get a input signal from an RF
generator to

align filter board.

All other voltage and resistance checks are in specs.

Any advice of what to check next would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] Switches

2004-10-22 Thread Glenn Haffly

As I begin starting on K2 # 4277 I recall something about
switches being accidently melted when soldering something on the front panel
board. To avoid this , what
page in the manual do I need to notate as to pay extra attention to possibly
avoiding this problem ?

Thanks Glenn

[Elecraft] Socket IC's

2004-06-15 Thread Glenn Haffly
Hello All , I have K1 1850 up and running and a K2 in the box to assemble
when time permits.
When assembling the K1 several IC's were soldered directly to the RF board.
When I build the K2 , Is there a reason for not using an IC socket soldered
to the various
boards rather than direct soldering an IC to the boards ? It seems logical
that for future
upgrades and component replacements a socket would make more sense. Anyone
building a K2 use IC sockets ?

Tnx Glenn
