Re: [Elecraft] Field Day experience with K3
John: That is odd, we ran a K3 from a 27 AH battery without any problems whatsoever. Gregg W6IZT -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of John Kountz Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2012 1:20 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Field Day experience with K3 Fellow K3 guys: N6L, our 2AORG solar powered Field Day station was specifically configured to demonstrate off-the-grid emergency opperations and thus provided an excellent opportunity to put one of my two K3 (sn 3271 and 2215) to work under less than the comforts of home. Disquietingly, the K3 wasn't up to the task! Let me explain: both the K3 and our second radio, a TenTec Eagle (Model 599AT sn 3051271430) were fed from the same 120 watt Power Film Panel /110 AmpHr GSM battery combination and operated at 100W output. In tandom operation, the Eagle was not affected by momentary voltage dips (below 10 VDC) whereas the K3 would shut down. With both radios in SSB mode and following the first K3 shut down, the K3s operating environment was changed: different bands, different antennas, reduced power output (to 10 watts) different operators and, finally different solar /GSM battery combinations. None remedied the problem. Following from our experience, while the K3 and the Eagle offer excellent operating characteristics, beware of the K3 under extenuating circumstances; it's liable to let you down even at low output power levels. The only potential solution may be found in a voltage boost device such as the N8XJK boost regulators http://stores.tgelectronics.org/Categories.bok?category=Boosters Unfortunately, following the research necessary to uncover a source of these devices Field Day was over. Next year for sure! 73 John Kountz, WO1S/T6EE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3s at W4NT
This year we operated 3E using 3 K3s. The radios performed flawlessly. The receivers are amazing. At times we had a CW and SSB station on the same band with only occasional and minimal interference between stations. The antennas were only separated by about 200 ft. Just short of 4200 Qs. A great time was had by all! 73 Gregg W6IZT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] PR-6 issue when QRO
I use my K3 on 6 meters with a concerted SB-220. When using the PR6 connected to the KXV3 as intended and using the amp, the GaAs FET is destroyed immediately. My work around was to employ an external TR relay on the K3 to switch TX RX, connecting the PR6 to the RX side of the relay and to the RX input of the KXV3.Using this arrangement has worked fine for the past few years. With E skip season approaching I thought that I would try to resolve this problem and get rid of the extra RF plumbing. My initial thought was the TR relay in the amp might be too slow and RF was being reflected back into the K3 during the transition from TX to RX. After looking at the K3 block diagram I doubt that this is the case as the PR-6 should be switched out of the circuit well before any RF is present at the output. For reference the TR relays in the amp are spec'ed at 8 msec to switch and the K3 is set at 8 msec TX delay, which I believe is the default. Any ideas? 73 Gregg W6IZT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] PR-6 issue when QRO
It has me stumped too Joe. The TR switch uses two SPDT Tyco/Schrack relays. Dick layed out the PC board. He has used it in several amps that he has built. Is it possible that one of the relays is dropping out early? Maybe. Nothing else is connected to the PR6. I thought about the RX antennas, but they were not connected to the PR6. My RX antennas are disconnected from the K3 and grounded during TX using the key out as the control line. -Original Message- From: Joe Subich, W4TV [mailto:li...@subich.com] Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2012 4:06 PM To: Gregg Marco W6IZT; Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] PR-6 issue when QRO The TR relay has been replaced by a TR switch that Dick, K5AND designed that uses Schrack relays that are spec'd to switch in 8 msec. Is the K5AND TR Switch design documented anywhere? Does it use a single relay or multiple relays? Is there any chance that the input replay is dropping out while the SB-200 is still making RF? Do you have any separate receive antennas connected to the bypass ports on the PR6? Do the receive antennas have a front end saver inline? [Elecraft] A tremendous thanks to Elecraft
On behalf of the entire HK0NA team I would like to take this opportunity to thank Elecraft for being a primary sponsor for the HK0NA 2012 DXpedition. Without their assistance an operation of the scale that we have planned would not be possible. Our goals for this trip are aggressive. To reach these goals we needed to set up two operating locations. OP A at the top of one of the highest peaks on the island and OP B at the location of the Military Facility. OP B is located about 300 ft ASL and OP A is almost 900 ft ASL. We plan to be on the air with 10 stations. These stations, at the two camps, will be operating in close proximity. The K3 and KPA500 are the perfect combination for DXpeditions. The light weight makes it possible to establish a 4 station camp at OP A, and the combined receiver and transmitter performance enables us to operate multiple stations in relatively close proximity. The main team is meeting in Bogota this evening to begin the trip to Malpelo. We plan to arrive at the island at dawn on January 21. Please visit our website at hk0na.com for information, news and updates. Thanks again to Eric, Wayne and the entire Elecraft team for making this endeavor possible.
