RE: [Elecraft] K2 Optical Encoder Test Problem

2007-04-14 Thread James austin

I had the same problem, turned out to be a bad solder joint on one of the
wires going from the board to the encoder.

Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2007 18:58:02 +

Just started the the alignment & test Part 1 on my K2 (Rev. f) page 42.
Everything went well, no smoke or error codes, until I got to the Optical
Encoder Test step2. It says to turn VFO knob in both directions and verify
that displayed freq. changes accordingly. The only change I see is the
right most digit, and it only changes from 7100.00 to 7100.01. Obviously
not much movement. Have not seen this particular problem posted so I'm in
the dark as to know how to fix it other than check my previous work. Any
help would be appreciated.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 USB support with Timewave U232 ?

2007-04-28 Thread James austin

Here is a $15 part to add a USB port to the K2.

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=718

I got one today and connected it to the header on the control board. Ham
Radio Deluxe identified the radio and is able to control it.

If you don't have an internal battery installed, you can use that screw on
the top panel to mount this board and the USB port lines up with the empty
hole for the battery switch.

Neat looking device, but you'd have to find a place to put it. They depend
on removing the DB-9 and using that space. You'd need to keep the DB-9 for
it's AUX IO purposes. Might be simpler to use one of those $10 Serial to
USB

cables.

At $80, it would sure hurt!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 USB support with Timewave U232 ?

2007-05-05 Thread James austin

Here are the steps I took to get it working:

1) The board ties VCCIO to the 3.3v output on the chip. You’ll need to
remove the solder bridge. Details on their web page for the part.
2) Connect VCC to VCCIO, this ties it to 5v, I just installed a jumper wire
on the board between the two.
3) Three wires connect to the header on the K2 control board. Make sure you
wire TX to RX and vice versa between the K2 and this board. I let the unused
RS-232 lines float and didn't jumper rts/cts.
4) Download the driver from ftdichip.com. This is a virtual com driver, the
USB port looks like a serial port.

The converter is bus powered from the computer.

I’ve been using it with Ham Radio Deluxe for a week and everything is
working fine. There was some concern on the reflector over noise, but I
haven’t found that to be a problem yet. There are bigger noise problems in
the house.

This board only provides control of the radio via the serial port, I didn't
bring all the signals from the control board to the back panel, so if you
want to control a KAT-100, you'll still need the KIO2 or equivalent. I just
liked the idea of going from TTL serial on the control board directly to
USB, rather than TTL -> RS-232 -> USB.

There is an article in the latest QST which also discusses this chip.

Jim,
In today's mail I received a couple of the USB to Serial converters
you

spoke of. They look very interesting and I am anxious to get one of them
fired up in my K2 but I have a couple of questions that you will probably
be

able to help me with since you successfully got yours going.

What did you do with the unused RS-232 control lines? The K2 only
uses

RXD, TXD, and GND. Did you jumper RTS to CTS as it is in the K2's serial
interface cable and did you tie the rest of them up or down or did you let
them float?

You mentioned that you connected your converter to the header on the
front panel board. Would you describe what line you connected there and
did

you connect RXD and TXD to the real of the K2's DB9 connector?

Is your converter bus powered from the USB interface and was your
board

already wired that way?

Thank you for your help. 73

Re: [Elecraft] KUSB for K3

2007-05-07 Thread James austin

Windows loads USB drivers based on the vendor id and product id reported by
the device. Are you implying that MacOS and Linux do it differently, by
saying the driver used is based on the chip?

73,

Jim

So, getting USB to work depends on the following:

1. the chip(s) implementing the USB port in your computer;
2. the driver for the chip implementing the USB port in your computer;
3. the chip(s) implementing the serial-to-USB adaptor;
4. the driver provided with the serial-to-USB adaptor.

If you are using a MacOS, Linux, or a flavor of UNIX you will find that
there tend to be only a few generic drivers for this since the drivers are
based on the chip(s) used. Windows requires a vendor- specific driver for
each device. The latter means that even if you get the same hardware
(serial-to-USB converter) from two different vendors (generic Taiwanese
serial-to-USB adaptor), you need two different drivers for Windows but
only one generic driver with MacOS, Linux, or *NIX.

A huge selling point for me was the modular and up-gradable approach of
the K3 (and the K-Line as a whole)
You can go every where from the Base radio (as a great radio all by
itself) up to the full blown K-Line fully loaded.

I also had radios from "The Other Guys" and having to buy a whole new
radio to get new features really is a waste of money.

As the Elecraft product line increases it allows me to add in new gear
that integrates well in both function and appearance
to my existing equipment so I don't wind up with the mishmash of shapes
and sises so common with "the other guys"

Same thing happened to me recently, rotating the knob didn't work anymore
and it went back to Elecraft to have the encoder replaced.

It was expensive, I should have just ordered the encoder and replaced it
myself before paying for a service call. The tech at work has a desoldering
station that would have made the job easy.

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread James Austin
I just downloaded and tried to run it on a Pi running the latest version of
Raspian got the error I expected.

pi@raspberrypi:~/kx3util_1_16_6_25 $ ./kx3util
-bash: ./kx3util: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
pi@raspberrypi:~/kx3util_1_16_6_25 $

How did you get it to run?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-12 Thread James Austin
Perhaps Elecraft could compile this app in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors.

Dealing with this kind of Linux stuff is not something most people should
have to do.

Another free online DSP book, that I stumbled upon this evening is Signal
Processing for Communications. I have not gone much past the table of

Crowdfunding would also give a good indication on how many KPA1500's
you could sell in the market as it is today.

[Elecraft] [PX3] Does not respond to the knob being rotated

2016-10-16 Thread James Austin
My PX3 no longer responds to the knob being turned. The only indication I
see when turning it is when the marker frequency is being displayed. When
turning the knob, the displayed marker frequency bounces back and forth
between something like 14.050.80 and 14.050.85.

The PX3 is otherwise functional.

Any suggestions? I opened it up and all the solder connections for the
encoder are solid.

It's the same behavior, whether you move the knob slow or fast, kind of
like one of the channels on the encoder is being lost. Elecraft told me I
need to send it in to be repaired.

It is probably the same LCD display on the KX2, KX3, and K3, so I wouldn't
read too much into that.

On the other hand, it is also an SDR, so perhaps it will be added if there
is enough interest.
