So SUB VFO does nothing in diversity mode? [Elecraft] Problems with K3
*Hi all* * * *I have K3 serial number 2307 which is fully loaded except for the 2m module, but recently it's beginning to give me some issues, I previously had ERR VC0 errors a few years back but cured this problem with the official K3 Synthesizer ALC Modificationhttp://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/ELECRAFT_Application_Note_KSYN3_ALC_Rev_A.pdf .* *Problem 1 ..* *Recently I have been having similar problems, when the radio was getting warm tuning the VFO would cause lots of crackling noise on the band, then if I tried to complete **VCO Calibration it would complete very quickly and I would get the following errors **E 5 ERR VC0 ... **E 00255 ERR VC4.* * * *So I removed both the K3SYNTH boards, checked for dry joins etc but nothing was found, so I decided to put the ** K3SYNTH boards back in the radio the opposite way with the board causing the issue in the 2nd RX position and the later ** K3SYNTH board in the main VFO position* * * *So all seemed well for 3 days but then the problem arose again, but this time when the radio is cold t**uning the VFO would cause lots of crackling noise on the band, then if I tried to complete **VCO Calibration it would complete very quickly and I would get the following errors **E 00013 ERR VC0* * * *So this is the other K3SYNTH board in the main VFO position and it's causing the same issue but when the radio is cold.* * * * * *Problem 2 * *I was having a QSO with a local on USB when my TX signal suddenly stepped down the band about 1.5khz, after much a do we finally realized what was happening and the local ham was having to receive my with his RIT on, I checked out my signal and sure enough I was 1.5khz low ?? how could this be?* * * *So I tried everything I could think of including re flashing the firmware but still the same problem exists, so i tried CW, all was fine, this is strange, after around an hour of trying various things I turned off ESSB mode and bam, the USB signal came back onto the same frequency as the RX, oh this is strange ??* * * *So i switched ESSB on again and the TX signal stepped down 1.5khz again .. * * * *So that's where we are at the moment, I still have both the above issues with no apparent answers * * * *All help appreciated.* * * *Jim M0CKE* __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] p3 Tap to QSY in Data A mode
Bob et al, This is not the way I operate in contests, I use the K3's excellent filters! Scenario:- If 1 very strong station is close to 3 weak stations you will not copy the weak stations due to the strong station shutting the ALC down, so narrow the filters right up and hey, there are the weak stations! So using the P3 to find the signals and leaving the K3 filters narrow works real good for me. Only thing i have to do is use the VFO B knob while VFO A is running where I would like the P3 to tune the K3 with click and shoot to the centre of the pass band when in data A mode. I think this is a feature that’s required for the P3. Anyone else agree? You can select any of several signals this way that will be in your passband and it will be right on the signal. You should not be QSYing your radio to tune to different signals in the way you describe. This is just the wrong way to operate PSK. Since the P3 / K3 is not decoding the specific signal you desire to go to, and PSK signals are so narrow, the phenomena you describe should be expected rather than considered a problem. Re: [Elecraft] P3 VFO B Tracking
Maybe a better explanation would help :- OK here's the senario. VFO A Main run VFO on say RTTY contest, want to tune to find multi's with VFO B but using a narrow display width on the P3 (ie 25khz), VFO B is out of the display very quickly. Now if you could track the frequency of VFO B on the panadapter I could see upto 200khz (+ or - 100khz of VFO A) with VFO B. So in essence I know the P3 takes the IF from VFO A but at 200khz bandwidth you could track at a high resolution (narrow frequency, say + or - 12khz) of the VFO B frequency if it allowed us to track with the VFO B frequency. For me this would be very useful on single op and Big nob Little nob operation (2 operators) as my whole system is set up for the sub VFO to be the multi chaser and the main VFO for running. So can this be done or is it a please mr elecraft add this function to the P3? This comming weekend is BARTG RTTY and I'd love to use it this way ??? Re: [Elecraft] P3 VFO B Tracking
Brian I've played with a softrock and rocky but it never really did it for me, maybe i didn't set it up correctly? It never seems very sensitive to me even with the IF out mod on the k3, Are you using a preamp / filter on the softrock? Anyway the idea of the P3 was a good one, just hope they can add this feature in future release. Jim Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2011 14:02:21 + From: als...@nc.rr.com To: makid...@hotmail.co.uk Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 VFO B Tracking Jim, Maybe the P3 is the wrong tool (for now). I use ROCKY (free)/SDR on the subrx as a pan adapter. The RTTY segments are not that wide anyhow you need at most 50 KHz. The display width is readily and infinitely variable. There also is no baseline jumping or peak/averaging which has to be fooled with. KISS. Actually it is KICS for keep it cheap and simple. It is easy to recognize RTTY signals and also gaps where one can CQ. The real problem is in using the K3, i.e. switching of TX between A/B/SPLIT/UNSPLIT without messing up. One would almost have to use A/B but that would would put the subrx and panadapter on the old A frequency. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 1/17/2011 12:04, James Balls wrote: Maybe a better explanation would help :- OK here's the senario.
