[Elecraft] Elecraft KPA500 vs Tokyo Hy-Power 1.1Kfx - FET Compliment

Well, after studying the manuals for various THP amplifiers, I have an
answer to my above question about the different number of active devices
(FETs) used in the THP 1.1Kfx amp versus the KPA500 amp which offer rather
similar power outputs.

 

THP essentially uses the same PA board for their 1.1Kfx (600w); 1.2Kfx
(750w) and 1.5Kfx (1000w) amps by varying the power supplies and the FET
drain voltage - Vd - to achieve different power levels.  The PA is called
the PC1662 but with minor component changes to reflect the different drain
voltages.  So, the 4 FET compliment in the 1.1Kfx amp is overkill for the
600 watt output while being just right for their 1.5Kfx (1000w) amplifier.

 

As usual, Elecraft got it right using two of these FET devices in the
KPA500!

[Elecraft] Bit image backup: Safe sectors

Could you be more specific about your process for bit image backup and
safe sectors?  Program you use?  What files you choose to backup?  Whether
Windows Restore program is or is not a suitable substitute?  Thanks.

It is vitally important to practice safe sectors. A bit image backup
takes only a few minutes, and can be made on an auxiliary hard drive or a
jump drive.

[Elecraft] KX3 and PTT

I saw your below note on setting up a foot switch PTT via the ACC2 jack.  

 

As an alternative, and if I am not using the MH3, is there any problem to
accomplish the same PTT function by building a jumper from a TRRS 3.5mm plug
(into the MIC jack) to two mono in-line jacks where the pins of the plug are
split into the two which support the mic (tip and sleeve) and those which
support the PTT (ring 1 and ring 2)?  I'm planning to use a Heil
headphone/mic with a foot switch for home use.  

 

I, for one, am enjoying the exciting process of birthing the new KX3.

Robert,

 

You can set up the ACC2 jack for use with a foot switch. Set MENU:ACC2 IO to
LO=PTT, and connect your footswitch between ACC2 tip contact and ground.
