[Elecraft] RE: K2 for sale and accessories
Nosey Nick wrote: Didn't you start an international incident last time you tried to sell this? :-) Gee-mny Christmas Nick, I had hoped everyone had forgotten that! Maybe things will go better with our VE friends this time as I have not excluded sales to Canada FB on looking forward to SDR. I did a presentation to our local DX club and I think I sold myself on it more than anyone else. I think we will see a lot of vendors get on that bandwagon pretty quick. But for most of our fraternity, it is probably not "plug and play" yet, at least that is what I get from the reviews (QST etc.)and Flex-Radio. But, I like to be out front, on the cutting edge, and sometimes I have experienced injuries from sharp objects. 73 Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2/100 no DSP Menu
When I fired up the K2 today, it was all confused and I had to do a 4-5-6 reset. After the reset I could get no DSP menu so I removed the KDSP and jumpered the audio lines in order to do the CAL FIL. At that time when I pressed the AFIL switch I got a "not installed" message as I should. After the CAL PLL, and CAL FIL operations, and putting everything back together I tapped DISPLAY to get the KDSP menu and no luck. Just Frequency and Voltage and Current. Activating the AFIL switch cycles me thru CF1 thru CF4 as expected. Ideas anyone? Jim W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: FS K2-Twins
The "twins" are no longer for sale. Actually, I repented and decided that I really did not want that "SuperBlooper 1" (actual brand and model withheld) with which I could not have near as much fun trying to get 10Watts out on 10 Meters(anybody else been there? A friend pointed out I just turn on the KPA100.) The SuperBlooper did however have a very high KPD factor. (For the un-initiated and ill-informed the KPD factor is calculated as absPrice/knobcount, sometimes referred to as knobs per dollar). I shall also apologize to the group for my post causing somewhat of an international incident. Really, the very nice VE gentleperson's comments were well intentioned I am sure, and I take no offense. [Elecraft] ATU/Tuner
Paul, I have had both the LDG and the Elecraft ATUs. For my money I would chose the Elecraft KAT100. The KAT100 in the standard casing is low profile and is a great unit. I used that setup here for quite a while and then opted to put the KPA100 and KAT100 in an EC2 case (know in the fraternity as "K-Twins"). Now I can split the two up and have a 10W rig for travel or the QRO rig here at home for those rare DX contacts. 73 Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] What antenna should I build?
Gee, I live in a restricted neighborhood and I could not be happier with my 40M off center fed dipole I have stapled to the "ridgepole" in my garden home. I mounted a 4:1 balun at the feed point and fed it with 1/2 wavelength of coax. It works 80 thru 10 meters and is easily tuned with my KAT100 to 1:1 on 40 thru 10 and 1.2:1 on 80M. Moving from band to band changes the radiation pattern and on 20M, it has a pipeline into Europe and the Middle East. Made some nice contacts on the K2 alone, I very seldom QRO up to the big gun, the KPA100. 73s Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Low power out on 10M
Yeah, I know this subject has been kicked around for a while, but none the less. When I built the K2, I had no trouble getting the 10W out on 10M. 1) I have rewound T2 and elevated it above the board 1/16 inch. 2) Band Power at W6 Measured output. 20 -33 DBM 2.0 WATTS 10 -29.3 DBM 2.0 WATTS From the above measurements it seems that at this level the drive at W6 and the power out of the Low Pass filter at the antenna connection are tracking fairly well. 3) Band Power at W6 Measured output. 20 -26.3 DBM 10W 10 -26.7 DBM 5W The drive is still up there, but whoa nellie! What happened to the output? This is where 10M flattens out. You can ask for more power, but it just isn't there. Back in the old days, I would start replacing empty state devices. I have checked the components around the 10/12M Low Pass Filter and all seem correct. Anybody seen this and got a suggestion.? RE:[Elecraft] KDSP2-settings for CW use
Karsten, I am no expert, but yes I have played with it a bit. I found everything greatly improved when I carefully aligned my filters (always with the KDSP2 in bypass) after getting tired of a 650hz sidetone( I moved it down to 500hz). Afterwards, I tweaked the KDSP2 to the filter alignment. I added quite a bit of gain (10db) and now the de-noiser is amazing. Before, when I would use the de-noiser, the signal would be degraded, but now it all seemed to come together. I now use the de-noiser quite often on weak signals. 73s Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] CW Keyboard Program - Freeware
I have just posted to my webpage a new program, "K2Keyboard" written by yours truly. This program was developed as an add-in for K2Comm, also by yours truly(also freeware), and will be included in the next release of K2Comm. Being only 7 days younger than dirt, I have some coordination problems with aged fingers and sometimes the paddles just get away from me. I am, by nature, a bit CW challenged anyway. I was using one of the more popular keyboard programs and discovered that when running on my machine, the noise level on 30M went up about 2 - 3 s-units. Ferrite chokes et al to no avail. This program uses no timing loops and runs much, much quieter in my shack. (This will tell your age: How many of you can recall loading a card deck into a computer, placing a portable radio on the cabinet, and listening to a tune emanating from the computer? I can hear it now, "What is a card deck?" ). Stewart wrote: "Anyone using a MicroHam microkeyer with a K2 with an outboard KPA100 ?" Stewart, As near as I can tell from the MicroHam MicroKeyer documentation, the device makes no connection to the K2 thru the K2's serial port, whether KPA100 or KI02. So I would suggest that answers your question. Your second statement does puzzle me a bit. You said, "I'm interested in how the microkeyer copes with the non standard Elecraft RS232 implementation?." As a long time and very experienced datacomm engineer, I have to ask, what is non-standard about the K2 RS-232 implementation. I find it very straight forward, requiring no handshaking, simple and up to the task. Far simpler that some of the "stuff" (cleaned that up) that I have run into in my long and now retired career. Again, please forward your requests off the reflector, direct to me, [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will email you the zip file. Wow! I just sent all the current users an update that includes more features. I really appreciate all the interest in this little freebie for my K2 friends. For the moment, I will suspend sending out more "packages" until I give my "beta testers", all thirty of them, time to report back any issues or suggestions they might have. The first items I sent out were a really quick and dirty, see if that is of interest and I was not prepared for the response. Not having a website means I have to create all those emails. What a lot of fun! Again, this is a freebie, no commercial interest (reserved for later. :-) :-)) Just a fun response to a post on the reflector a few weeks ago. If you want a copy, e-mail me off the reflector and I will make note of your request and once the "testers" have had the opportunity to check in, I will fill your request. RE: [Elecraft] KPA100 Hi Current on 30M
I am a bit mystified by the reports of low power on 30M. I have K2 #4028 and bought my KPA-100 at the time I purchased my K2. Barefoot on 30M, I have 15w out (measured) and QRO a good solid 100W (measured). If I choose to observe power out in TUNE, the K2 will cut the power to around 55W, but coming out of tune and closing the key will get me a good solid 100W. I have not experienced a problem with overcurrent. I wonder what has changed in the more recently delivered KPA100s to cause the problem? Just for grins, I switched in the dummy load and on 30M with the POWER control at full throttle, I can bump 3.5 amps according to the K2 current display. And as reported above, a rock solid 100W. Just curious. Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE:[Elecraft] K2 ALC action
I will just bet you are using a K2/KPA100. I am not driving a big amp so it has not been a real problem but when I enter TUNE with the KPA100 activated, I will see a fluctuation in output for the first few seconds. The fluctuation is at a rate of 1 "pulse" per second. After a few seconds it stabilizes and all is well until I enter TUNE once again. I had not checked for this under normal keying but yes, the fluctuation is there when keying the rig on CW. Now that we know it occurs on at least two K2/100s, I like you wonder if there is a solution. [Elecraft] The Spirit of this reflector
I know this is a bit long but it so represents the spirit of this reflector, I just had to pass it along. Enjoy. As one of Jeff's "Elmers" I know I walk a little taller after reading this. 73s Jim, W4ATK "Find the Golden Thread in BARC" By Jeff Drew, N4JDU There is a value to club membership that every new member needs to use. There is no charge, but the end results can not be measured. I have only been a ham for about a year but I have discovered from the Elmers ( i.e. senior hams) a sincere dedication to the future of ham radio and to us, he younger hams. I used to ask, why all this attention to younger hams? There is plenty of literature available to all of us, but nothing is better than actual one on one contact by an Elmer. We are fortunate to have in our club a large number of Elmers. I strongly recommend that any new ham find three or more Elmers to share the fine points of ham radio with you. I guarantee they will do it! Heres why: These hams have seen the effects of time on our hobby. Some good, some bad. They know that if we dont use it, we lose it! They realize that the bands associated with Amateur Radio are constantly being sought after by commercial endeavors. Currently, the attack is with access to broadband power lines (BPL). There are many such quests for our band space. My point is that the band allocation to ham radio is always politically un-stable. Technology plays an important factor here for both interests. The Elmers want to se the art form preserved. Their theory is that a certain perpetuation plan be put in place. Heres what I think it is: · Be available to young hams for questions and answers. · Help them in their particular interests. (I.e. Phone, Rtty, PSK, CW, Satellite, EME etc.) · Encourage new hams to explore the broad characteristics of the amateur radio. · Share your experience with new hams that want to learn. There may be more un-published directives from the Elmers, but I have seen their determination to preserve the hobby. From my point of view, they see the future of ham radio in us! It is up to us to put forth the effort to locate an Elmer to counsel us as we embark upon this vast sea of radio. Nothing could be a better resource than having the knowledge of an Elmer. It is the golden thread in our organization. Let s use it before we lose it! Think about how powerful we would all be if we each had an Elmer who passed on his experience with us! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K2/100 DC power connector
There is an extraction tool to do this, supplied with the Anderson Power Pole kits. The tool is of thin steel, shaped (sort of half moon) to fit around the wire crimped in the power pole connector. It slipped in underneath the wire and connector releasing the retainer spring inside the plastic housing. You could then slide the wire and connector from the housing. You could try a stiff thin piece of steel or brass, if you can insert it, from the rear (wire side), in such a way to release the retainer, the connector will slide from the housing with a gentle tug. [Elecraft] MFJ 1279 and K2
I will pass this along for what it is worth. First a bit of background. a) The MFJ breaks the audio path from the sound card to the mic unless PTT is activated. This is a good thing. b) The MFJ provides an optically isolated CW keying circuit. This too is a good thing. c) The K2's ptt and dot line are one in the same. This has caused some consternation for those who would like to use, of all things, a footswitch (and I have a circuit that remedies that if anyone should need it. I don't). With the MFJ then there exist two paths for CW keying, the optically isolated path and simply keying PTT on the mic connector of the K2 via the MFJ. Why this was a problem for me: I did not like to hear the relay chattering away when on CW and felt it was advantageous not to have sound card audio routed to the K2 during cw keying. It did not produce a problem, I just did not like it. My solution: I installed a spst toggle switch of the miniature variety just above the "Footswitch" jack on the MFJ and hard wired the switch to JMP5. NO to JMP5-3, C to JMP5-2, NC to JMP5-1, I placed labels on the front panel labeled "K" for keying and "P" for PTT. Now I do not hear the relay when I am in CW mode with MixW and with a simple flip of the switch when I change modes to PSK31 the MFJ PTT circuitry is activated and audio from the sound card is routed to the radio. Cool. I have also programmed PF2 to go directly to the INP menu for selecting Padl keying or Hand keying (for the confuser) and PF1 to go directly to the PA menu for turning the amp on/off. And I made a "y" cable for the CW out of the MFJ that ties the CW out from the MFJ to the dot side of the paddle. A switch here a press there and voila' It works for me! 73 Jim, W4ATK K2/100 #4028 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If you hear W4ATK be sure and give me a call. 73 Jim, W4ATK K2 #4028 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Freebie CAD program
I need to produce a couple of "quality" schematics. Anyone know of a "freebie" CAD program to do this. REL[Elecraft] PLL Reference Oscillator Range Test
Well, it is there on page 8 of Trouble Shooting. The last two bullets on the page. Just where it would be if I were looking for it, dead last place I looked! :-) That circuit is pretty "rock" solid, no pun intended, but there are some pointers to check out. 73, Jim, W4ATK K2 4028 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Anyone using a K2 for RX and another TX?
Just for fun I whipped up a little logic circuit which placed appropriately in the K2 and with an added DOW-KEY relay and a foot switch would allow the use of the K2 as a reciever with a free standing transmitter. This is untested and just a mental exercise but it is how I would attempt to resolve the problem. I believe you can do it without breaking a single trace. It ain't QSK but it is just one switch. e-mail me if you want the proposed circuit. WARNING: If you play around with the MCU "|MUTE" circuitry, it is very ESD sensitive and I am not the only one who has discoverd that. The only solution if you blow it is a new MCU if you want the audio mute. 73, Jim, W4ATK K2 #4028 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
