Re: [Elecraft] K7WTG Dayton

2013-05-17 Thread Jeff KB2M
Even though I'm not planning any Elecraft purchases in the near future I
agree this doesn't seem fair. Also, almost every major retailer has a
'Dayton discount' for the 3 days of the hamfest. I would think it would be
in Elecraft's best interest to extend the discount to the less fortunate who
can't go to Dayton, for whatever reason.

Howard,

That sure seems like a massively unfair policy. There are many, many of us
who simply cannot afford to go to Dayton but would appreciate a discount
during the once-a-year hamfest.

So if you have money and can afford to go to Dayton, you get a cheaper price
for Elecraft products.

Re: [Elecraft] Why did I purchase this antenna for the KX3?

2012-11-30 Thread Jeff KB2M
I found this antenna shootout done in 2002 by the HFPacker group I'm a
member of

http://hfpack.com/antennas/shootoutreport2002.html

This should give someone a good idea on the performance to be expected by a
portable antenna setup.
Before I retired I used to run QRP portable with an 817 from hotel rooms
around the country, so I have years of experience with small antennas in
hotel rooms. Before I retired, and when the last solar cycle ended I
switched over to remoting and never looked back. The small antenna thing was
just too painful for me anymore.

I never said that Philip shouldn't enjoy what he has. But he did encourage
others to buy that antenna, and that's the part to which I take exception.
It simply is not comparable in performance-versus-cost-versus-portability to
other options. And those manufacturers claims that you don't care about are
what lots of other people base their buying decisions upon.

QRP is fun ... I used to do a lot of it. Using simple gear is fun, too ...
I used to do a lot of that as well. But I would never try to talk somebody

[Elecraft] K3 with Kenwood MC-60

2011-06-18 Thread Jeff KB2M
I picked up a used MC-60 mic at Dayton. When I try to use it with my K3,
as soon as I connect it via the 8-pin foster on the front the frequency
starts to scan like I'm holding down the up button on the mic. Thinking that
there was a problem with the mic I tested it with a Kenwood TS2000 and it
works perfectly. You push the up button and it scans up, etc. Now what
puzzles me is that I used to own another MC-60(that I sold) and it worked
correctly with my same K3. I'm wondering what could be causing this before I
start to take everything apart. Anyone else run into this, does anyone have

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Raves about the K3

2010-12-12 Thread Jeff KB2M
Or how about this. You could buy a pretty much loaded K3 *AND* a 7700 for what
a 7800 costs. I hate to open up the K4 discussion again, but a K3,P3,KPA500,
wrapped up in a QRO box with more spread out switchcraft, large dual speakers,
and band buttons seems like a no brainer. I would sell my 9000D for one, and
keep my K3 for backup, and field use.

主題: [Elecraft] Raves about the K3

This is my first post to this reflector and would like to share some of my
observations.

First. I have a 4xxx series K3, built by Elecraft that is fully outfitted and
filtered running LP-Pan, an EMU-0202 and a MicroHam Station Master.

Second, I have been operating an IC-7700 for the past 2 yrs.

That being said I have run both rigs side-by-side into a IC-PW1 and Palstar
AT-Auto.

I must say that each radio has its own benefits and is outstanding to operate,
but here is where the K3 shines:

1. True dual VFO/dual receive;
2. Easy MARS modification (yes, I am a licensed AF MARS Operator);
3. IF out. LP-Pan and PowerSDR are outstanding;
4. ESSB - of course with the proper filtering being installed;
5. Tx Eq and Noise Gate - No out-board W2IHY EQ is needed (sorry Julius);
6. Light weight;
7. Unbelievable receive audio with the appropriate filtering;
8. Menu flexibility;and
9. Easy updating of firmware.

Candidly, I still love and use the IC-7700, but more and more I am utilizing
the
K3. The K3 is an outstanding value and robust transceiver.

As a separate matter (a bit of a rant here), and for example having seen the
ARRL and Sherwood engineering reports regarding the FTDX-5000. We as hams are
always in search of nirvana. While I have heard the issues regarding the
FTDX-5000 design that have not made the mainstream press, the issue here is not
to bash Yaesu, but to congratulate and thank Wayne and Eric for the OUTSTANDING
job, not only with the design and operation of the K3, but their support of the
user group to identify issues and improvements and their outstanding customer
support when you call them for assistance. Kudos to Elecraft.

Best, 73, Ed, N2EAC

Hi

I see no advantages over the K3, so why would you even consider this new
model Kenwood? If it was a 1000 dollar radio that might be a good a reason
for a change.

As I see it the Kenwood has less knobs and functionality on its front
panel than the K3.

The transmitter uses 12 volt devices so the IMD is probably going to be
below acceptable standards.

It does not look like the new Kenwood has remote direct internet control
like the TS480.

This is just a TS570S on steroids for the receiver, it aint gonna set the
world on fire.

All I am waiting for now is Icoms down conversion radio. I would not be
surprised if they released something like the IC706 with a down conversion
receiver just to be trendy. Despite what Icom says it will produce a down
conversion radio. They had a good one the IC751A.

It would be hard for Icom too brag about receiver performance when this
cheap lowly Kenwood will kick the crap out of its $10K IC78000, not a good
look in the market place!

Stay tuned for the new movie, Fiddler on the roofing filter! It stars the
3 Samurai's

Much easier than that. Just plug the hot red side into only the black side

to NOT try and save a penny or so a connector by designing the red and black

Back to clocks(!), I've used computer logging since the DOS DXbase in the

Think your better off with a netbook for that kind of stuff, ipad
doesn't have i/o at all, no audio input and a fairly limited
processor, its more of a dumb tablet for web browsing and running
little apps. And for the price, you could pick up 3 netbooks and put
whatever flavor of *nix or windows on it that you like (even os x).
Not to say tablets dont have potential but currently they seem to be

Not a big deal either way this goes. I'm just curious. Thank god I'm not a

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Reviews

2010-03-01 Thread Jeff KB2M
I also ordered mine at Dayton and received it last week. It is installed and
working 100%. I'm seeing the full 10 watts output. RX seems very good. Two
small problems with the install. The supplied cross brace had one screw hole
mis-aligned. Also the three screws to mount the 144XV to the side panel were
missing. I used three brass screws I had on hand. A short call to Elecraft
and a new cross-brace and the three missing matching black screws are on the
way to me. I could of drilled out the bulkhead to accommodate the misaligned
screw hole but didn't want to get any metal chips inside of my K3. If the
original brace didn't have metal removed from the 144XV area I could of just
trimmed it to fit around the 144XV. But if I did this it would of weakened
it to the point that its purpose would have been defeated. It will be a
simple job to replace the brace when it arrives. I won't even have to pull
the K3 offline.
I'm not complaining about the two small hardware issues. As it was from the
first group ,one can expect some minor fit and finish problems. I would give
it an EHAM 5 of 5 !

Re: [Elecraft] K3 remote operation

2010-02-14 Thread Jeff KB2M
I remoted a TS-2000 for some time when I was on the road for work 2 to 3
weeks a month. Like most people, I used Skype for the audio. For the rig
control I used TRX-Manager. Main reason I did the control that way was
TRX-Manager used about 300 baud of bandwidth to control the rig, rotor, and
antennas. From most hotel's Bandwidth was an important consideration 5 years
ago when I was doing this. I'm not sure it still is.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation

2010-02-14 Thread Jeff KB2M
  I'm running SDR-IF 192k wide on a $399 3 year old 2.20 gigahertz Pentium
Dual Non hyper-threaded processor with 2 gig of memory under WIN7 32 bit. I
have a $229 24 inch monitor, and a used Infrasonic Quartet soundcard I
picked up for $90.The SDR-IF software uses about 25% of the screens real
estate. I just tested SDR-IF's CPU usage. It is under 17% average. I just
watched a video I selected from MSN, it uses on average 44% CPU. Along with
LP-Bridge running I can use several programs simultaneously with the K3 When
in contest mode I run SDR-IF, LP-Bridge, Logic8, and contest specific
logging software. I can control the K3 with either piece of software via the
virtual com ports in LP-Bridge, via a mouse click, or turn of a knob. While
this is up and running I read email, view videos, chat with my GF's on
Yahoo, MSN, etc without a burp, and without any geek type system tweaking,
plug and play. This to me is the ultimate shack setup made possible with the
K3's IF out. I'm one of the people Larry mentions that switched over from
Flex. I owned a Flex 1000 for several years. Part of my preference to the
SDR-IF software is I've been running it for 4 or 5 years.
Do I need a P3? No, and I don't see myself lusting for one. Where I think
Elecraft is going with this is to a QRO rig. This K4 if you will, will be
200 watts output, have a bandscope (the one we see today) built in, room for
actual band select buttons, more room between knobs, more knobs, less menu
items, a nice set of dual speakers, etc. A 70cm module and the ability to
run full duplex on the satellites would be nice. I would sell my 9000D and
buy one of them. Ok enough, the sun is shining, I'm obviously snowed in
here, and need to get out of the house :)

Don't forget that the LP Pan allows you to run the SDR-IF software suite.

I wish all my radio manufactures that frequently update their manuals, send
out change pages, in addition to full copies. This would save a lot of
trees. I know you could just print out the change pages, but then you would
have a problem indexing inserts of 2 pages or more. There are obvious ways
around this indexing problem, that are acceptable as long as it is presented
correctly in the index.

I picked up my working replacement headset today, and briefly got it on the

hook up and configure properly, and yes it is very sensitive. I run about a
mic gain of 26, and compression of 24 with my Heil 781 for dx work. The
CM500 I have mic gain or 10 and comp of 11, this would be a good starting
point. Rest of config is Bias on, Low mic gain range. The headset also feels
very comfortable.

I picked up one of the CM500 headsets after hearing about them here on the

mic jack, and I'm having some difficulty getting the mic to work. I selected
(of course) rear mic input, and what is happening is I'm getting very
distorted audio when I listen in monitor mode. I tried both hi and low mic
gain, with different mic gain, and compression settings. There appears to be
no sweet spot. Any ideas?

Last night, K6MM posted to the NCCC Email list:

Headset Report:  The new Yamaha CM500 headset performed flawlessly.
Great reports, comfortable all weekend, good soundproofing.  A real
bargain at $40 -- thanks again for the group purchase, Josh (W6XU).

After about 22 hours of use in SS-SSB, I'd like to reinforce John's
comments on these headsets. I find the headset quite comfortable,
the cans sound very good, and the mic produces GREAT audio. I bought
three, and they are replacing the EV RE16 that I've used exclusively
for contesting for the last five years!  If you worked W6BX, K9YC,
K6MM, AK6M, or W6XU, you were listening to the CM500.

The mic in this headset is not a FLAT mic, but it's quite smooth and
clean sounding, and the EQ is close to perfect for ham radio and
contesting. It sounds MUCH MUCH MUCH better than most Heils I've
heard (and at 1/3 the price). Because it's EQed for communications
use and my existing voice messages were recorded with an RE16 (a very
flat professional recording/broadcast mic), I had to re-record all of
my SS messages.

The only negative of this mic (and it's a minor one, because it's
easy to work around it) is that it is a bit sensitive to breath pop
and handling noise, so you need to roll off the low end AND keep it
away from your mouth. I found myself alternating between two
positions -- one below my mouth a few inches, and the other a few
inches above and to the side, but out of the way of my nose (so that
breathing didn't get into the mic). Both positions are quite
comfortable, and both sound very good. I used the higher position
for recording the messages.

One VERY important caution -- the output from this mic is VERY high,
and can easily overload the electronics that it is feeding if you
don't take care with gain settings. To record, I ran straight into
the sound card of my IBM T22 (eight year old Thinkpad) with the mic
preamp OFF, the gain at minimum, and the mic about four inches away.
Any closer caused the sound card to clip!  I did NO eq while
recording.

When operating, I plugged the mic and headset into the rear panel
connectors, turned on the bias (tap 2 on the keypad while in the mic
select menu) and set mic gain to Low (tap 1 on the keypad in the mic
select menu). I used max cut of the two lowest bands on the K3 to
minimize the breath and handling noise. With other rigs, you may need
to do that with a series cap.

73,

Jim K9YC

Re: [Elecraft] Main tuning knob rough

2009-11-11 Thread Jeff KB2M
I had some time today to mess around with my main tuning knob problem. I
once again removed the knob, and felt washer. Everything appeared normal,
there was nothing wrapped around the shaft, all nuts were secure, nothing
needed to be cleaned, etc. So I put it back together and all is working
fine. I also tried several times to change the clearance between the knob
and felt washer to try and reproduce the problem to no avail. I think the
VFO A encoder had some kind of problem from lack of regular use that has now
gone away. Remember, I only had the problem while rotating the knob
counter-clockwise, the tuning knob worked perfectly in the clockwise
direction. Anyway all is now well again in K3/KB2M land..

I just noticed a problem with the main tuning knob on my K3 #1516 this
morning. I noticed it when I was tuning around using the finger dimple. The
odd thing is it only feels rough when you turn the knob counter-clockwise
while applying slight pressure to facilitate using the finger dimple. I took
the knob off, repositioned it(making sure it was clear of the front panel
and not crooked, it wasn't) and still have the problem. It is bad enough
that after several turns it causes the rotation to stick. Once again this
only happens when turning counter-clockwise, with slight finger pressure in
the dimple.
What I find interesting is that I hardy use the tuning knob as I use an
LP-Pan with PowerSDR and tune around with a mouse. I get the feeling that
the problem is with the VFO A encoder. Any ideas?

[Elecraft] Main tuning knob rough

2009-11-10 Thread Jeff KB2M

Any ideas?

I like this. But if it's done don't display the same information on the P3

I would like to see it configurable both ways. All of the display , or just
say the pan adapter. Or also possibly use the extra real estate to display
additional information, like a data display, for PSK31.

Jeff,

I would use the display feature purely as a means to be able to leave my
glasses off.

Perhaps the P3 could be programmable to enable selected views to be
displayed on either screen and this would benefit all?

I have no idea how difficult this would be to do but I hope Elecraft
consider the possibility of doing this.

The P3 screen size would not be large enough to enable me to see everything
clearly without my glasses unfortunately...:-)

[Elecraft] KRX3 antenna input

2009-04-07 Thread jeff kb2m
I spent the morning installing a sub rx in my K3 #1516. All is working
well. I set it up using the KAT3 ant2 as input the the sub rx. Now I'm
thinking that there is no advantage to doing it this way(other then me being
too lazy to install the aux bnc connector). Does it really matter, is there
any advantage to using the bnc as an rx only input? I have a four way
antenna switch downstream from the K3 so there is no advantage to the ant2
not being used by the main receiver as all antennas come in through ant1.
The ant2 input would go unused otherwise. Is the bnc rx input better, is it
worth taking my K3 apart to install the BNC rx connector ? All 150 to 400
answers welcome...

There are couple of points to keep in mind if you don't use the AUX input
and use ANT1/ANT2 for both sub receiver and main tx/rx. They're covered in
the KRX3 manual, but in case you missed them:

 1) You'll need well-isolated antennas to avoid RF tripping the COR in the
antenna input used by the sub receiver.

 2) If you try to listen on a higher-frequency band on the subreceiver than
you're using for the main, you may notice significant signal attenuation
 in
the sub receiver. That's because when using ANT1/ANT2 you're sharing the
main band pass filters and they have significant attenuation on the bands
 above the one selected.

Both issues are avoided by using the AUX input instead.

[Elecraft] amp tune

I'm trying to setup my K3 to tune my tube amp. I have TUN PWR set to 25
watts. when I long press the tune button the K3 goes into transmit at the
selected 25 watts, in CW mode, but the amp doesn't key. If I press the PTT
on the mic the amp goes into tx. I must have a menu set wrong? The only
connection to the amp (other then the coax!) is the RCA connector key out on
the K3. on Tuner is in bypass, ext ALC is OFF. Any ideas??

Jeff, sounds like you are connecting your linear keying line to PTT IN
and not KEY OUT as you think you are... Check the connection.

[Elecraft] K3 sub rx matched filters

2009-03-27 Thread jeff kb2m
I'm thinking of upgrading my K3 by adding a KRX3 sub receiver. One of the
things I want to try in the near future is diversity reception. Now, I think
I need a matched pair of filters to operate in diversity mode? Or does this
just pertain to the 5 pole filters? Or, if I already have an 8 pole 1.8
filter would I just have to buy another one ? I tried to search the archives
and there appears to be no keyword search? Thanks in advance for any help
with this

[Elecraft] Automated Transmit Gain Calibration at 5 W, 50W, err txf

2008-12-27 Thread jeff kb2m
I'm trying to run the Calibrate Transmitter Gain routinre in Utility ver
1.1.12.22 on my K3 # 1516. And I'm getting this error...

Starting 5 Watt calibration.

Calibrating at 1.900 MHz

Unexpected response DBERR TXF; to DB;. State 127

5 Watt calibration failed.

I verified that I have my 2.7 filter in # 2 slot selected, and I tried it
with ATU in auto and bypass. I'm also getting a ERR TXF error. The dummy
load I'm using I verified that it is close to 1 to 1 . Any suggestions?
