Subject: [Elecraft] K3s USB audio problem; both channels identical

Hi Elecrafters,

I found out that I lost the audio of the MAIN RX on the USB port of my K3s
(with SUB RX installed)

On all other audio outputs (speaker, headphone, line-out) MAIN and SUB audio
are present.

On the USB port the Right and Left audio stream are identical. (so both L
and R is MAIN audio now)

I did check on new firmware and I did an MCU LD with all the latest versions
available. (which were already loaded anyway)

The USB problem was still there.

Once again an MCU LD.

The audio via USB is still only MAIN (at both channels), no SUB audio.

An EE INIT with some older configurations.

This should not have any impact and it didn't; no change.

CAT is working OK via USB.

Different cables make no difference (as expected).

Changing L-MIX-R to different settings makes no difference (as expected)

Besides USB, power and antenna nothing else is connected to the K3s.

After some K3s power cycles the reverse is now happening.

USB audio is only SUB audio (both R and L channel) and no MAIN audio is
present

The rest of the audio outputs remains OK.

I did check USB audio on 2 different PC's (both WIN10) with various audio
programs which are using Right and/or Left channel audio input (WSJT-X,
MSHV, Visual Analyser).

All have the same issue.

Windows 10 settings are OK, mic. input is set for 2 channels.

There are no other programs running, requiring audio input.

Visual examination of the KIO3B boards revealed nothing.

Anyone with some bright ideas that could help me out?

73 Henk

PA0C

PS: I did sent a mail to Elecraft support, but hope to get some feedback
from this group as well.

Frank McCann was one of the old timers when I joined the agency in 1967.
By that time he was the Engineer in Charge of the Portland Office but
the EIC did a lot of the journeyman jobs in those smaller offices. When
he retired in the late 1970s (or was it the early 1980s) I applied for
his job but they had to give it to someone else whose office was being
closed and I continued at the San Francisco Office until I retired in
1995. I have no idea what happened to him after that.

I found several years ago that Brother makes different adhesive level labels.
After labeling a lot of cables many of them were falling off after a few hours.
The better quality adhesive does not fail.

Hi Lee,

When I got my K3 I rebuilt my shack from teh ground up, starting with
the ground, with an eye to reduction of RFI. I took a lot of Jim's,
suggestions, and I lost about 2 S units of noise. That process is
detailed here:

Re: [Elecraft] CW Contest and Elecraft K3s decoder

2017-11-27 Thread Jim Cassidy
Absolutely correct. Successful contest operators rely almost entirely on their
CW ability other than the use of the programmed messages.

I just saw another post about not sending over 30 wpm to have better rate,
TI7W was sending much faster had a rate of about 210 per hour for the entire 48
hour contest. I did hear him slower as well but mostly was a lot faster.
ZF2MJ was in the same mode as well.

You're absolutely right, Jim. It's those beginning CW ops who don't know
CW, or haven't developed their copying ability to contesting speeds, or
who don't feel confident about their copying ability, who are using code
readers.

Most serious contesters, including me, let their logging program SEND
repetitive things. Some great contest operators still send a lot with a
paddle, but let the computer call CQ. And some ops send a lot more with
the paddle than they should. :) I used to have a pretty good fist, but
it's declined with age. So when we let the computer send for us, we're
doing others a favor by producing cleaner, well-spaced, error-free CW
that makes easier copy for both their brains and their readers.

As a founding member of CWOPS, I'm proud of our members who have done
such a great job developing and executing a mentoring program for hams
who want to learn CW and build their skills.

2017-11-27 Thread Jim Cassidy
Just when did the totally incorrect fact that the high speed contest operators
are using CW decoders get started?? NO truth to that at all. And pretty well
proven by the original question of this thread. CW decoders need good steady
on frequency signals to work reliably. That almost never happens in contest
pile up calling.

In order to keep the robots from getting perfect copy on me either rag chewing
or the very few contests I enter, I've stopped using a keyer and have reverted
to sending with a bug. Not very many robots can copy even a good bug fist.

I'm of the opinion that robot copying and power over 500 watts output should be
outlawed in contests. That would help level the playing field immensely.

I think the Elecraft group is fine but that many of the OT subjects can better
be handled on groups for those subjects. For example most of the NVIS
discussion could have been on the Tower Talk group.
Simple solution would be for this group to stay more on the Elecraft topic.

I may have missed something in this discussion but I question what is different
from using a touch screen or the buttons on the radio as we have now? I
operated a considerable amount of time in the WPX SSB test last weekend using a

maybe he NR and NB a couple of times. Using N1MM+ I did not even need to change

Touch Screen... No thank you. I get the
allure but ergonomically its going to be
miserable the older we are. If you're
reaching up to touch a screen, try doing
that for a contest's worth when you have
shoulder issues. If you don't have them
now, you will after the contest is over.
Have a touch pad on the table, You'll be
hunched over it all the time you're using
it and your neck will be screaming.

Don't believe me? Good, I'm a Chiropractor
