Re: [Elecraft] PX3 kit tips?

2021-10-01 Thread Jim Finan
Do a complete inventory of all parts before you begin. It isn’t unusual for a
small piece or two to go astray.

Simply call Elecraft and they’ll send it to you. Though it may be a little
slower than in the past with the challenges of late.

Most important- have fun!

Julie,

Just follow the instructions. You will need a #1 Phillips screwdriver.
If you don't understand any procedure, ask here.

You may want to verify whether Elecraft specifies Thermal Material where the

Sounds like the seller was a sucker for aftermarket stuff. Elecraft
products are well designed. The screws are all standard English units.
Most of are 4-40, smaller ones are 2-56.

I've NEVER thrown away screws -- I probably have close to a thousand,
sorted into plastic drawers by size. Ditto for lots of other mechanical
and electronic parts.

I changed the subject so we can spare those readers who actually wonder what
size that nut is.   They won't be interest in who fired what and what size
round was used.   I suppose I could regale you all with tales of firing the
Vickers, Bren, and Sten on the ranges as a teenager.  All were 303 and all
designed long before UK went metric.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.223_Remington has an answer to the quoted

But back to wrenches - My tool box still contains Whitworth, BA, imperial, and
metric spanners.  Still have the BA taps too and some cycle thread stuff.   Who
could possibly manage with only two sets of wrenches/spanners?  Yes, I used to

Subject: [Elecraft] P3 Goodness and questions

I recently obtained a P3 and I'm and exceedingly happy! Now that I own it I
feel bad that I wasted a few years trying other solutions that introduced
noise and undue complexity into my station.

Just a few notes and questions because the manual is helpful but I don't
fully understand what I'm reading yet.

1. When using QSY the P3 unit often slides. How do most of you prevent
the unit from sliding?
2. The signal/noise floor jumps a lot and I'm not sure if that's due to
local interference or something in my setup. Based on reading I likely need
to noise troubleshoot/filter my station. I don't see an AGC setting for the
P3. Any suggestions?
3. What serial number requires the mod? My serial is 3251
4. I need a serial port screw stud - can I buy that from Elecraft when
I purchase a cable + vga card?
5. Is there a quick setup cheat-sheet anyone has for the P3?

Thanks in advance

I was at the Shelby, NC hamfest this weekend, and we had the KPA1500 for
the Elecraft booth.
I caught myself several times referring to the line voltage required as
220 even though I know better.
My age is showing.

But I do know that if one is operating the KPA1500 in a commercial
building with 3 phase service, the voltage is 120/208.
The KPA1500 power supply is a switcher, and most switchers can tolerate
a wide variation in input AC voltage.

Subject: [Elecraft] (no subject)

Good morning. I am having a problem getting my K3S to save in the config menu
the setting for PTT-PTT. When I set it for RTS-DTR, hit menu it works fine.
Then I turn the radio off and back on and the PTT-PTT setting is back to
OFF-OFF. What am I doing wrong? How do I get the Config menu to save the
PTT-PTT setting to RTS-DTR?

Tnx Jeff W7JW

Re: [Elecraft] K3S QST Article

Has the mechanism for the K3S returns been set up yet?

I suppose turn-around time also needs clarification too.

Not many manufacturers would do this sort of upgrade, let alone for 'free'.

Thanks!

Knut,

The K3S as originally shipped does not have a design flaw. Like virtually all
12-V-class transceivers using currently available MOSFETs, it was already right
around -30 dBc or better, worst-case, for 3rd-order IMD. We simply found a way
to make it better by a few dB, and we're offering to make this upgrade at no
charge.

2016-09-18 Thread Jim Finan
Re: Loctite:

I'd suggest Loctite 'Purple' (222). Still accomplishes the task but much easier
to adjust/disassemble later. Especially important with small fasteners and
tools.

If you're installing 6mm, 8mm bolts on your car, Blue is likely the best choice.

Temporary emergency solution: eye-glass kit containing small Phillips
screwdriver available at any convenience store, airport, hotel, notions

Permanent but removable solution: screw-threads lightly coated with Loctite
Blue (not Loctite Red).

I find the PX3 panadapter to be indispensible
in both environments (both in the shack and in
the field), so the lack of RX I/Q outputs is the
KX2's biggest shortcoming to me.

Thank you, Hajo and Ryan. I think you're absolutely correct.

I attended David Shoaf’s "Shrinking the HF Transceiver" presentation at
Ham-Com in Irving, Texas this year. David is in charge of international
distribution and customer support at Elecraft. As part of his presentation,
David shared that Elecraft was (unpleasantly) surprised by the high
percentage of KX3's being used as base stations, in many cases, serving as
the operator's one and only one HF rig. In other words, operators were
buying KX3's in lieu of, rather than in addition to, K3's.

David stated (repeatedly) that RX I/Q was suppressed on the KX2 ... not to
reduce cost, size or weight, but rather to create "product differentiation"
(his words) with the K3 and KX3. In other words (my words), Elecraft didn't
want to make the same "mistake" with the KX2 that it made with the KX3.

I was able to play with a KX2 at Ham-Com. What a blast. I'm anxious to
purchase a KX2. However, I’d feel cheated purchasing a KX2 knowing RX I/Q
was unnecessarily suppressed (at least from an engineering perspective).
I’d like Elecraft to offer a KXIQ2 (an alternative to the KXIO2), replacing
the AUX output of the KXIO2 with an RX I/Q output.

Please reply to this thread if you're interested in having Elecraft expose
RX I/Q on the KX2. This will enable the KX2 to be used with a PX3 for
backyard / picnic table portable operation, travel, ... and, of course, in
using the KX2 as a base station at the home QTH. For hand-held, pedestrian
mobile and ultralight backpacking, I'll leave the PX3 at home and disable
the RX I/Q output in order to save the 10 - 15 mA receive-mode current
drain.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX2] DC Power

2016-06-09 Thread Jim Finan
Not all the Li Battery problems are from mishandling.
‎
Sony had to eat a bunch of notebook batteries a few years ago because of
improper safety protection (internally). Nikon ate a bunch of their lithium
battery cells for the same reason. Nvidia recalled all their early tablets
about 6 months ago for the same reason.  These are recalls I've had to contend
with. There are many more.

Basically the issue was that at least some Chinese (maybe others as well)
manufacturers were cutting corners - something you can't get away with on li
batteries.

Ordered my KX2 very soon after the order site went a‎ctive and received it
about 3 days later. But - I didn't order the batteries until more info was
released about them, several days later.

There was someone on this reflector that had a Li battery fail in an energetic
way some months back. I'm sure it is in the archives.

From what has been posted here, the least problematic (most stable?) chemistry
appears to by LiFePhosphate. K9YC (Jim)  recommends them after he evaluated the
situation.‎

‎Li batteries have been banned from the cargo hold of passenger aircraft
because of potential problems. Plus, they aren't easily extinguished when the
do have an energetic reaction.

As for #2, I surmise their reasoning includes:

1. Higher energy density for greater capacity for a given size and weight
compared to other lithium chemistries
2. Safe when charged and discharged responsibly, ergo the charger specified
to go with it, protection circuitry within the battery pack, and KX2
shutdown with low voltage states. No doubt they expect ham radio licensees
to behave responsibly considering the knowledge they are expected to have.
3. The knowledge that lithium ion technology has a good safety record in
laptops and cell phones, despite the very rare but widely publicized
instances of battery failures that are almost always the result of
improper charging or trauma.

Those that are still concerned have the option of using an external
battery, or cobbling together their own internal battery pack with the
chemistry of their choice. It wouldn't be hard.

[Elecraft] KX2 /KX3 Headset Question

2016-06-07 Thread Jim Finan
As a former air Traffic Controller I used the Plantronics StarSet headset for
years. I've been wanting to adapt one to my KX3 (and now my KX2).

Jim (‎K9YC), in his RFI treatise, indicates that Plantronics headsets are a
good choice. However, his recommendations were regarding the $25 variety, not
necessarily the StarSet.

My questions are:

1. Has anyone adapted a StarSet for this use?
2. Are there any reasons why the StarSet would be a bad choice?
3. Can the matching hand switch be adapted too?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

While the StarSet is only a single-sided headset, I haven't seen many that are
lighter or  more compact. It would seem to be ideal for portable SSB.

I originally wanted to do this when I got my KX3 a couple years ago but my
interest was rekindled after receiving my KX2 a week or so ago.

Thanks and 73,

Jim

Re: [Elecraft] New products

2016-06-05 Thread Jim Finan
I made my annual pilgrimage to the nearest Ham store (3 hours drive) and saw a
bunch of very pretty equipment.

However, I'm not going to ditch my Elecraft gear any time soon.

Touchscreens have some advantages, but there are a number of trade-offs.
Reliability (I remember problems with the FTDX5000 displays), ruggedness ‎,
etc. Also seem to take more power to run the bells and whistles.

There could be a couple of solutions to their use by sight-impaired Hams‎. One
would be voice recognition software. Like Siri or Cortana - how about 'Ellie'?

Development costs would be pretty steep and we all know how wonderful the voice
recognition software can be...

Another idea would be to use a 'Super' K-pod/K-nob and/or something like the
Genovation keyboards (mentioned recently on the reflector). That would be a
much more simple solution. It could have custom keycaps with Braille characters
on them.

Not too many, but maybe 12-24? That interface could be used on multiple radios
(a bunch of speculation about that regarding the K-pod recently)‎. USB or
something else to plug in. I'm not wild about wireless as that's one more
battery to deal with.

BTW, Touchscreens don't necessarily need to be proprietary. I have a couple
that are generic with my Beaglebone that seem to work ok‎. Nice toy but not
necessary.

Not sure how practical these ideas are...

Lynn,

Please tell us how a touchscreen interface can enhance usability for
blind operators.
Elecraft has made a commitment for such usability for all their radios
with those blind operators particularly in mind.
A GUI interface means nothing to those who cannot see it.

Re: [Elecraft] KX-3

2016-05-31 Thread Jim Finan
KX3 is a bunch easier to build and takes much less time than the K3/K3s.
Depending on your options there are some small connectors to deal with but not
too bad. Compared to working on a cell phone it is a piece of cake.

You can download the manual(s) from the Elecraft website and check it out.

Re: [Elecraft] k2 continuing on (nothing to lose)

2016-04-15 Thread Jim Finan
I concur with the recommendation for a Hakko Desoldering tool. The Hakko 808
has been discontinued but I bought the Hakko FR-300 (the new and 'improved'
version).  I use Weller solder stations but the Hakko FR-300 saved my bacon.

I had just soldered a DIP IC in backwards (completely pilot error) and
following suggestions from the list I bought the new version to try to save the
DIP IC. All I did was add a bit of solder where the solder braid had partially
removed it and desoldered each pin in order - the DIP IC lifted out.

I didn't have to sacrifice the IC or the board.

As I recall the FR-300 was about $260 from Amazon.

This list has helped me on more than one occasion and I'd like to thank those
who participate.

The two best tools I have found are the HAKKO FX-888D Soldering Station and
the
HAKKO 808 De-Soldering tool. Not exactly in the RS price range, but if you
do
a lot of thru-hole board work, well worth the money.

I don't do much SMD work although I have a Hot Air system and can solder
quite
well with the HAKKO.

Replacing hole through relays is a snap with the HAKKO 808. The parts just
fall
off the board.

Great news LS.

If that RS desoldering tool is like the one I have somewhere in the bottom
of my junk box, it is not temperature-controlled and does a wonderful job of
delaminating traces from pc boards. It simply gets too hot. That's why mine

Subject: [Elecraft] k2 continuing on (nothing to lose)

Hi all,
Tnx for all the encouragement and suggestions by PM and on the list on my K2
tragedy. After thinking it over after something to eat I decided I didn't
have anything to lose by simply continuing on.

My thinking was, ok, this is a learning experience, right? So I figured, ok,
let's learn how to remove a component without tearing everything up LOL. If
I could get the second ruined relay out without doing more damage to the
board, I was ok.

I did manage to get the pads back down on the first relay socket and I
didn't see that the traces were actually broken. So I carefully threaded the
new relay in and soldered it in like normal. Fingers crossed that all the
connections are good.

As for other relay that I ruined, I robbed a relay out of my KAT2 kit and
got out my desoldering iron from Radio Shack. Not the best desoldering tool
in the world and it has failed me in the past, but marginally better than
desoldering braid and nothing else and went to work. After sucking out as
much solder as I could on the pins, I flush cut them as far down as I could
go and went over the pads again with the iron and braid. Fortunately, this
relay came out easily after cutting it in half on the topside with the wire
cutters. No damage to the board.

At that point, I was cooking with gas and decided to install L33 and the
remaining diodes. That put me at the alignment part II stage. By about 10pm
last night I'd complete the receiver alignment and all those circuits
checked out virtually perfect. So the RX is intact and receiving on 40M. I
hear relays click when I go through the bands - the 20m bandpass filter is
where I did all the damage and replaced the relays, so maybe they're hooked
up and working right.

Anyway, at this point, since the RX is fine and working normally as far as I
can tell, I think I should just go ahead with the rest of the build and see
what happens on 20M when it's done.

Like Wayne suggested, if there does end up a problem on 20M at the end, I
can probably just run wires on the bottom of the board to hook it all up.
It'll do me good to go back to the schematic anyway lol.

So onwards with the build and hope the rescue effort succeeds hi hi.

Tnx es 73,
LS
W5QD

I use Noctua fans for most everything. Have used them for years and haven't had
any failures. I use them for all systems I build for clients and myself. They
have several varieties for each size and the ones with rubber mounts are
generally the most quiet.  Also have a choice of 3 and 4 pin plugs.

While most of their fans come with rubber mounting hardware, the ones I suggest
have rubber inserts surrounding the bolt/screw holes‎.

Noctua is an Austrian company but fans are built in the orient. Top quality
with 'SSO2' bearings.

Both Amazon and Newegg have them and the prices generally run from about
$15-18. Just make sure the specs (CFM)  match (or are better).

While I haven't measured them on mine, they look like 80mm.

What are the current options for quiet fans for the K3? My original fans
are pretty quiet but at this time of the year when the windows are
closed and the ambient noise level is nil, the fan noise really starts
to bug me. It's the very slight rattle they make when they start winding
up.. (In the din of summertime, can't hear myself think, let alone fan

Sources? Prices?

Are the newer Elecraft fans quiet? My PA is only a couple of years old

Re: [Elecraft] Quiet fans for K3

2016-01-30 Thread Jim Finan

Subject: [Elecraft] Quiet fans for K3

What are the current options for quiet fans for the K3? My original fans
are pretty quiet but at this time of the year when the windows are
closed and the ambient noise level is nil, the fan noise really starts
to bug me. It's the very slight rattle they make when they start winding
up.. (In the din of summertime, can't hear myself think, let alone fan
noise.)

Sources? Prices?

Are the newer Elecraft fans quiet? My PA is only a couple of years old
so the fans are pretty recent model.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Small solar array to handle just the shack, computers, and lighting

Try backwoodssolar.com They have a variety of things for off-grid as well as
grid-tied. Lots of good info on the website as well.

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Small solar array to handle just the shack,
computers, and lighting

Hi all,

Some of our friends are putting in large solar arrays that feed power back into
the electrical grid. I'm looking for something smaller and simpler since our
electricity use is very low overall.

The reason it's so low is that we've converted all of our lighting to LED. (LED
bulbs that consume 10 W yet have 60 W equivalent light output relative to
incandescents are getting remarkably cheap -- 3 for $10 at Home Depot.)
Consumption goes up when we use the electric range, etc., but that's
infrequent, and I don't mind paying the city at such times. As for the radios,
I run 10 W more often than 100 W, and the computers don't use much, either.

So I figure we could run the house from a 500- to 600-W array most of the time.
Other requirements:

- I'd like to forego feed-in to the power grid. We don't need to watch our
meter turn backwards, and with a small array it would turn pretty slowly
anyway. But I do want city power in parallel when we exceed solar array
capability.

- I want a backup battery that's sufficient to hold us for a couple of days
during a blackout. Every once in awhile on a really hot day, city power
consumption exceeds what's available, and a transformer blows somewhere. Very
entertaining until you have to go buy ice for the fridge.

Systems that meet the above requirements seem to cost a lot more than the sum
of the parts. So what I'm looking for is a good source of roll-your-own-solar
info. I'll hire an electrician to wire up the solar system in parallel with the
city supply, but I could purchase the components and do most of the
installation myself.

Any suggestions? Please contact me off-list.

tnx
Wayne

I also ordered on the 27th. On April 2, I was told they would ship in 7
to 10 days. So that comes out as April 9 to 12.

Unfortunately for me, I will probably have to wait an additional 3 weeks
or so before they will get through customs here!

[Elecraft] Open Source

2014-08-19 Thread Jim Finan
There is a big difference between Open Source Software and Firmware.

Elecraft provides programming info for those who want to write programs for
their products (Software). If someone wants to write programs for Elecraft
equipment and make it Open Source, it is permitted.

On the other hand, I don't know of many manufacturers that provide Open Source
FIRMWARE. While some manufacturers provide Firmware upgrades (like Elecraft),
I'm not aware of any that publish source code for their firmware.

Bigger computer vendors do provide firmware updates to their hardware but I've
never seen one provide Source Code (Open Source). I come from a Unix background
and much Open Source Software is available (and for Linux variants). But not
at the hardware level.

No major corporation would implement software that they can't support and there
are too many variables to use Open Source for every application. Not to mention
security problems!

Jim
