[Elecraft] Push to Talk
Hello Group, Here's a CW nut who wants to hook up a Heil Pro-Set Plus to his K2. He has the Heil adapter for connecting to the K2, including a 1/4 female socket for a foot switch. He understands about VOX and PTT, and holds the MODE/VOX to cycle through the SPCH parms which allows the VOX to key the K2 with the indicated hang time. VOX mode works okay. In PTT mode, however, nothing happens when I short the PTT leads from the 1/4 female socket for a foot switch. Shouldn't the K2 blank the receiver and go into transmit mode when he shorts those leads? [Elecraft] KAT100 with Ladder Line
It can be quite tedious to build one's own ladder line. Wire size and spacing between wires is a critical factor in determining the resulting impedance of the line. Maintaining consistent spacing between wires is difficult. For closely spaced wires (eg. 1.5 to 2.0 inch for 450 ohm) slight variations in spacing is very critical to maintaining consistent impedance; whereas for 6 inch spacing there is less effect on impedance with slight variations in spacing. Eg. 6 inch spacing using #12 wire will give approximately 600 ohm open wire feeders. More info at: http://www.cebik.com/trans/par.html http://www.cebik.com/gup/gup31.html I find lexan difficult to cut due to the low melting point and clogged saw teeth. Plexiglass is a little bit better. I would opt for the smallest PVC pipe, cut into 6.5 inch lengths. Cut a 1/4 inch depth notch in either end wide enough to accept #12 wire. Use a band saw, scroll saw or hand held saber saw. After inserting the wire in the PVC, put a dab of Marine Glue and Sealant on there, or other quick drying adhesive. de Joe, aa4nn ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Peter, Try not to worry too much about feeding balanced lines. Get the Elecraft BL2 and hook it to the balanced line. Connect a 2 or3 foot piece of coax from the BL2 to your rig. Tune up and away you go. If the balun tends to get a little warm, just cut off 5 or 6 feet of the balanced feedline and give it another go. You don't want to connect balanced line directly to KAT2. 73 & gl, de Joe, aa4nn - Original Message - From: "Peter Wollan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, November 16, 2007 9:50 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Re: KAT100 with Ladder Line Please, I'd like some more discussion of this question. I've seen before that baluns on ladder line can be lossy, but I'm not about to get a balanced tuner, so it doesn't really help. What happens if you connect the balanced line directly to the KAT100? Or, in my case, to the KAT2? I haven't had any problems so far -- maybe low power makes a big difference, or maybe I've just had antennas which were reasonable in some way. I gather it's possible to get unpleasant currents on the case, mic, or paddle. Is that exactly the condition in which the balun will be lossy? Does connecting the ground screw on the KAT2 (or the one on the balun?) alleviate the common mode current problems? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Missing serial numbers
I built my K2 last year, and I am continuing to get to know it better, and I am consistently impressed with its capabilities. Could you supply a comparison and contrast of the K2 and the IC7000, or just other radios in general? David Wilburn - Hi David, I know little of the internals of any radio. It could be crystal filters versus DSP filters, single conversion versus n conversions. [Elecraft] Sweepstakes
In my early days of contesting I would shy away from contests having a serial number in the exchange. It was for me a big time thing to fall behind in the numbers, really embarrassing. But no more. As I entered Sweepstakes early Sunday afternoon I found it interesting that ops would often ask for a repeat to confirm my unexpected low serial number. You need a strong station and a lot of experience with good copying ability to compete for overall high score. If you insist on going for high score, make your goal more realistic and more fun by competing with stations in your own ARRL/RAC section or local radio club or a friend. In this way you are competing with stations in your particular area on this continent. Forget the high score and all the pressure that goes with it, and just concentrate on getting a *sweep* of all 80 ARRL/RAC sections. [Elecraft_K3] K3 Status Update - Oct 31, 2007

Re: [Elecraft] recommendation of a low cost iambic paddle / BeengaliSimplex shipping with gold contacts
That is correct, and also the K1EL Winkey keyer. Steve provided me with a chip fix for the Begali Simplex Mono which had the funny material for key contacts. Steve did considerable research and finally declard the Begali contact material was acting more like a diode, creating a peculiar problem for the way Winkey detected a paddle closure. This is not a problem with the WinkeyUSB keyer. Begali offers a kit, I think, that will fix the contact problem. de Joe, aa4nn From: "Vic K2VCO" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> If the 'regular' contacts are the same as what was previously supplied with the various Begali magnetic paddles, they have problems with many keyers, including the K2's internal keyer, the Logikey, and others. [Elecraft] Sony MDR headphones
I have the Sony MDR-NC50 noise cancelling headsets. The NC50s completely cover the ears, are quite comfortable for long periods although a little bit of pressure on the ears, but at least they won't fall off if one bends over. I bought these especially for BS7H, Scarborough Reef, because there would be a generator 3-4 feet from the operating table. We're sitting on a rock, remember. The NC50s did a great job eliminating generator noise. I could push the temporary "off" switch and the generator noise would really come through. Because the headsets completely cover your ears, that "off" switch does little good to hear somone talking. You must remove them completely to hear someone talking. I listened with the NC50 while flying in an old 747, San Francisco to Hong Kong (14 hours thank you very much), and the NC50 eliminated that constant drone, making it possible to hear a movie sound track without cranking up excessive volume. At BS7H we also had some Bose noise cancelling headsets. I thought the Bose was a bit better at eliminating generator noise. Re: [Elecraft] K2's break-in
I think QSK in hunt&peck is also useless unless you are sending 15 wpm. With short calls like n2ey, QSK hardly benefits to try and stop sending when 'he' calls someone else. With short calls you are already done., so what's the point? One VFO on the pileup and the other on H&P, well, what's QSK got to do with all that? de Joe, aa4nn I can't imagine the nerve- wracking, mind-numbing use of full break-in for a contest! I can - I've done it. I'm not a big-gun contester by any means, and do a lot more H&P than running a freq. I found it good in the following situations: 1) When doing hunt&pounce and trying to bust a pileup, QSK lets me hear when the station calling answers somebody else, and so I don't waste time or add to the QRM, I just stop sending. With two VFOs, I'll leave one VFO on the pileup and use the other to seek new ones. 2) If I'm holding a frequency and a big gun plops down nearby, I know it right away and don't waste time trying to fight him. 73 de Jim, N2EY ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Plexiglas case for K2
Excellent job, Doug. Fantastic detail with the plexiglass. What's to hurt transmitting with it as QRP. Go for it. de Joe, aa4nn - Hello all, I wanted to show off my K2 at the recent Melbourne hamfest. But, I didn't want a lot of people poking around inside my radio. So I decided to make some transparent plastic cover panels for the radio. It took about 10 hours to make everything fit. Anyone that is good with plastics could do it much faster but I was learning. I think it turned out really good. I got a lot of comments about it at the hamfest. If you want to show off your workmanship you might give it a try. I haven't tried operating the rig with the plastic covers on but I am sure it would be shooting RF out everywhere. The links below will take you to some photos of the radio. Re: [Elecraft] Switching Power supplies for K2/100
You'd be happier to not scrimp on a good power supply. I have used the Astron 25 SS-25M for years without fail or hash noise. I think it weighs ~ 4.5 pounds. I have used lighter weight models like the MFJ 25A MightyLite and Jetstream JTPS28 in contests and either one would trip out and shut down under continuous use. de Joe, aa4nn I'm sorry if this subject has been discussed (I'm sure it has) but does anyone have advice re. a light wt. switching power supply for the K2/100? tnx John N0GBR web page: http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Computer interface
You are telling him to change his logging program and that is not what he asked. The idea would be to get a USB/COM adapter and eliminate the complications of connecting to an intermediate computer. KISS principle. de Joe, aa4nn - Original Message - From: "Gregg R. I use this to remote control my station from anywhere. Go to http://forums.ham-radio.ch and peruse the forums and learn all about it and then go ahead and download the software. Please note this is FREE as Simon wants to keep Ham Radio Free. Gregg R. The problem is that the Dell laptop I use in the shack (I use AClog by N3FJP) has no db9 port, just USB. I did hook up to the desktop that is nearby and the interface works fine. We do have a wireless home network so my question is - can I leave the K2 hooked up to the desktop and access any control software and my AClog through the network or do I need to buy a db9/usb interface to go directly to my laptop? If I can use the network (which was set up by our 19 year old son who is away at college so unable to help computer dunce Dad) how do I go about doing so? Thanks in advance and my apologies for the dumb questions :) 73, Bill NZ0T K2/100 5703 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] LP-100
Hi Larry, Did you perhaps overlook my order and paypal payment of $322 August 1, 2006, for the LP-100? 73, Joe, aa4nn - Gee, thanks for the plug, Craig ;-) I should point out that at this time I only have about 10 units left from the current production run.
