[Elecraft] Push to Talk

2008-01-27 Thread Joe-aa4nn

Thanks Toby and others.

I looked at the referenced page and saw a note that I could just push my dit
paddle closed to initiate PTT. Works for me, so I don't think I want to
monkey around with the mic pins and jumpers on the control panel. It is a
temporary thing, anyway.

While I am a CW only Op, I promised some ham friends I would provide 60m
capability during our DXpedition to Cocos Island, TI9K, starting around
February 6, 2008. See http://www.ti9.eu.com

I have the 60m dipole in my yard now, strung up on a fiberglass mast with
center at 50ft, ends at 17ft, inverted Vee if you will. I'll be running
some tests with my buddies soon.

Thanks for all the help from a terrific group.

[Elecraft] Push to Talk

2008-01-27 Thread Joe-aa4nn
Hello Group,

Here's a CW nut who wants to hook up a Heil Pro-Set Plus to his K2. He has the
Heil adapter for connecting to the K2, including a 1/4 female socket for a foot
switch. He understands about VOX and PTT, and holds the MODE/VOX to cycle
through the SPCH parms which allows the VOX to key the K2 with the indicated
hang time. VOX mode works okay. In PTT mode, however, nothing happens when I
short the PTT leads from the 1/4 female socket for a foot switch. Shouldn't
the K2 blank the receiver and go into transmit mode when he shorts those leads?

Something simple, I suppose, but would appreciate some tips here.

I'm thinking that while I'm trying to work that split pile-up and I've got
the guys run frequency, I'd rather like to use the larger knob and
controls

to listen for the QSX freq.
It's not convenient to use A/B, because you have to tap it before you
transmit and I might forget. [B SET] does not switch the tuning as far as
I

can tell, just how the filters are being set.

about newly built rigs lasting the duration due to things

Plus, at the zero hour we ordered a bunch of upgraded

Along with others here is my recommendation. You work mostly
SSB very little CW and no contesting to speak of. I don't see

with the user manual and do some reading. What you'll learn
from this kit with the assembly manual would be how to get this
row of pins into that socket without bending or otherwise making
a mess of things. But there will be some tuning and aligning to
keep it all interesting. You'll be proud you did!
de Joe, aa4nn

I'm curious, I've never had to deal with moduler kits before. waht's
involved in putting them together? the most I've had to fiddle about
with were solderless kits that required springs or screws to fit
components together. for the teaching of the basics of electronics of
course. I'm just curious.

Ten-Tec Titan has on its back panel RCA jacks for
Key-in and Key-out. For years I have run the
following configuration.
Output from my keyer goes into the Titan Ken-in.
Output from the Titan Key-out goes into K2 Key-in.

This keys the Titan first, getting it ready to transmit,
after which the keying line to the K2 is activated.

I have also used the PA Key out from K2 to a PTT
input on some amps, like Tokyo Hi-Power. Works

de Joe, aa4nn

-Tec Centurion and Ten-Tec Centaur have two options for

inter-connection first is the single control T/R line but that won't
support QSK (at least I don't think so), they also support KEY IN and
KEY OUT lines for full QSK with Ten-Tec rigs (like my Orion or my
Pegasus) but I can't see how I would use those with the Elecraft. Anyone
out there using their K2/100 with a Ten-Tec QSK amp and if so how are
you connecting the two together?

[Elecraft] KAT100 with Ladder Line

2007-11-17 Thread Joe-aa4nn

It can be quite tedious to build one's own ladder line. Wire size and
spacing between wires is a critical factor in determining the resulting
impedance of the line. Maintaining consistent spacing between wires
is difficult. For closely spaced wires (eg. 1.5 to 2.0 inch for 450 ohm)
slight variations in spacing is very critical to maintaining consistent
impedance; whereas for 6 inch spacing there is less effect on impedance
with slight variations in spacing. Eg. 6 inch spacing using #12 wire will
give approximately 600 ohm open wire feeders. More info at:

http://www.cebik.com/trans/par.html
http://www.cebik.com/gup/gup31.html

I find lexan difficult to cut due to the low melting point and clogged
saw teeth. Plexiglass is a little bit better. I would opt for the smallest
PVC pipe, cut into 6.5 inch lengths. Cut a 1/4 inch depth notch in
either end wide enough to accept #12 wire. Use a band saw, scroll
saw or hand held saber saw. After inserting the wire in the PVC,
put a dab of Marine Glue and Sealant on there, or other quick drying
adhesive.

Re: [Elecraft] Mathematically challenged

Here's something to think about and it is doable and a no-brainer.

Phase your two verticals. Make each vertical a 1/4 wave and space
them 1/4 wave apart. Tune each one independently for your favorite
frequency. Get the ComtekSystems Phased vertical box with
associated feed lines and you are in business.
With the phased verticals you can selectively switch for end fire
in either direction in line with the verticals, plus you can switch
select to transmit broadside to the two elements. Amazing results.
Excellent front-to-back as well.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: KAT100 with Ladder Line

2007-11-16 Thread Joe-aa4nn

Hi Peter,
Try not to worry too much about feeding balanced lines.
Get the Elecraft BL2 and hook it to the balanced line.
Connect a 2 or3 foot piece of coax from the BL2 to your rig.
Tune up and away you go. If the balun tends to get a little
warm, just cut off 5 or 6 feet of the balanced feedline and
give it another go.

You don't want to connect balanced line directly to KAT2.

Please, I'd like some more discussion of this question. I've seen
before that baluns on ladder line can be lossy, but I'm not about to
get a balanced tuner, so it doesn't really help. What happens if you
connect the balanced line directly to the KAT100? Or, in my case, to
the KAT2? I haven't had any problems so far -- maybe low power makes
a big difference, or maybe I've just had antennas which were
reasonable in some way. I gather it's possible to get unpleasant
currents on the case, mic, or paddle. Is that exactly the condition
in which the balun will be lossy? Does connecting the ground screw
on the KAT2 (or the one on the balun?) alleviate the common mode
current problems?

[Elecraft] Sweepstakes

2007-11-05 Thread Joe-aa4nn

In my early days of contesting I would shy away from contests
having a serial number in the exchange. It was for me a big
time thing to fall behind in the numbers, really embarrassing.
But no more. As I entered Sweepstakes early Sunday
afternoon I found it interesting that ops would often ask for
a repeat to confirm my unexpected low serial number.

You need a strong station and a lot of experience with good
copying ability to compete for overall high score. If you insist
on going for high score, make your goal more realistic and more
fun by competing with stations in your own ARRL/RAC section
or local radio club or a friend. In this way you are competing
with stations in your particular area on this continent.

Forget the high score and all the pressure that goes with it, and
just concentrate on getting a *sweep* of all 80 ARRL/RAC
sections. Now, there's a challenge for you and a quite difficult
one at that.

---
When installing a crystal roofing filter in the K3, you enter a gain
compensation amount in dB. The compensation is done by the DSP when
that filter is in use.

---
Wait a minute. Does the act of putting in a specific filter tell DSP
what compensation to do OR must we dumb operators try to
guess at what compensation number to enter? And how would
that number be entered?

Re: [Elecraft] recommendation of a low cost iambic paddle / BeengaliSimplex shipping with gold contacts

2007-10-26 Thread Joe-aa4nn

That is correct, and also the K1EL Winkey keyer. Steve provided
me with a chip fix for the Begali Simplex Mono which had the funny
material for key contacts. Steve did considerable research and
finally declard the Begali contact material was acting more like a
diode, creating a peculiar problem for the way Winkey detected a
paddle closure. This is not a problem with the WinkeyUSB keyer.

Begali offers a kit, I think, that will fix the contact problem.
de Joe, aa4nn

From: "Vic K2VCO" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>>
If the 'regular' contacts are the same as what was previously supplied
with the various Begali magnetic paddles, they have problems with many
keyers, including the K2's internal keyer, the Logikey, and others. So
the gold contacts are a very good investment.

Re: [Elecraft] Hex-Key vs Kent paddle?

2007-09-20 Thread Joe, aa4nn
I have and use Kent single lever and dual lever
off and on. I like both very much but prefer the
Begali simplex mono the best.
The thing about the Hex key, for me, is the long
finger pieces...a long way from the pivot point
which makes for excessive swing distance. The
Kent dual lever paddle with short arms makes for
a better high speed paddle. imho

[Elecraft] first keyer

2007-09-10 Thread Joe-aa4nn

First keyers... remember the Mon-Key?
A pair of dual triode 12AU7s. One triode
of one tube produced dits while the other
produced dahs using a multivibrator circuit.
The other tube, one triode drove a speaker
while the other drove a keying relay.

Dits and dahs were not self-completing, so
it was tricky to hold the dah paddle down
until the timing was completed, otherwise
a zero might come out as a nine.

a K3. Here is my dilemma:

I am disabled and unable to solder because the medications I am on
make my hands shake like crazy. The person who normally builds kits
for me is unable to take on this task due to family and work
commitments. I have contacted three of the builders in the Elecraft
community and have received quotes ranging from $350 to $450 to do
what I want.

Therefore, by the time I buy the kits from Elecraft and pay for
assembly, I am looking at $1270 to $1370 for a basic K2 with what I
need for data ops.For $1399, I can get a K3/10 with the same
features plus many extras and better performance.

Maybe I should also look for a used K2 but I am real picky on build
quality.

Any advice guys?

Here's a thought. Elecraft scores a hit with the K3, appealing to the
general market but struggles under the mound of orders. Once-dominant
Kenwood, buys the US-based company and moves production & testing to
Japan. The K3 survives, Kenwood's presence in ham radio increases with
no engineering effort on their part. Elecraft as a name disappears and
unfortunately so does the innovation, forward-thinking and risk-taking
that has made them such a great source of gear.

The solution? We all get assembly skills and go to work for Elecraft to
make sure they have the production capability to keep up.

And, of course, we'd get employee discounts :-)

[Elecraft] Sony MDR headphones

2007-05-30 Thread Joe-aa4nn

I have the Sony MDR-NC50 noise cancelling headsets.

The NC50s completely cover the ears, are quite comfortable
for long periods although a little bit of pressure on the ears,
but at least they won't fall off if one bends over.

I bought these especially for BS7H, Scarborough Reef, because
there would be a generator 3-4 feet from the operating table.
We're sitting on a rock, remember. The NC50s did a great job
eliminating generator noise. I could push the temporary "off"
switch and the generator noise would really come through.
Because the headsets completely cover your ears, that "off"
switch does little good to hear somone talking. You must
remove them completely to hear someone talking.

I listened with the NC50 while flying in an old 747, San Francisco
to Hong Kong (14 hours thank you very much), and the NC50
eliminated that constant drone, making it possible to hear a
movie sound track without cranking up excessive volume.

At BS7H we also had some Bose noise cancelling headsets.
I thought the Bose was a bit better at eliminating generator
noise. Sony NC50 ~$100, Bose ~$300.

I think QSK in hunt&peck is also useless
unless you are sending 15 wpm. With short
calls like n2ey, QSK hardly benefits to try
and stop sending when 'he' calls someone else.
With short calls you are already done., so what's
the point?

One VFO on the pileup and the other on H&P,
well, what's QSK got to do with all that?

de Joe, aa4nn

I can't imagine the nerve-
wracking, mind-numbing use of full break-in for a contest!

I can - I've done it. I'm not a big-gun contester by any means, and do a
lot

more H&P than running a freq.

I found it good in the following situations:

1) When doing hunt&pounce and trying to bust a pileup, QSK lets me hear
when
the station calling answers somebody else, and so I don't waste time or
add to
the QRM, I just stop sending. With two VFOs, I'll leave one VFO on the
pileup

and use the other to seek new ones.

2) If I'm holding a frequency and a big gun plops down nearby, I know it
right away and don't waste time trying to fight him.

Hi Elecrafters,

I just sold my big, heavy linear power supply to replace it with
a small, light weight switching supply that I can pack into a suitcase
with my K2/100. Looking at the eham.net reviews, comments on all of the
switching supplies seem to range from "great, absolutely no switching
noise" to "noise everywhere", and everything in between. Given the
sensitivity of the K2's receiver, is power supply switching noise likely
to be more of a problem with the K2 than with some other rigs? Are there
any switching power supplies that you'd recommend that work well with
the K2 (and have little or no switching noise that the K2 would pick up)
and are there any that I should definitely avoid?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 at VP6DX - Ducie Island 2008

In a significant way, Elecraft sponsored all K2/100s
for the Banaba DXpedition, XY3C in 2004, of which
I was a part.
de Joe, aa4nn

I'm not sure how many here have noticed
but Elecraft will be a corporate sponsor of the upcoming
VP6DX operation in February 2008, including seven K3
based stations. I believe this might be Elecraft's first
such sponsorship but I expect the K3 will become very
popular with DXpeditioners due to its portability and
performance.

Where to start to look? Appears to have lost sensitivity on all bands, all

didn't want a lot of people poking around inside my radio. So I decided

it

much faster but I was learning.
I think it turned out really good. I got a lot of comments about it at
