[Elecraft] SO-239 Concerns -- Another Perspective
I agree with most of what has been said in support of UHF connectors for HF and low VHF -- with two reservations. 1. Many SO-239s provided as part of radio equipment are not up to the quality of Amphenol units. In particular, the spring fingers of the socket for the male pin loosen over time to the point that the connection becomes less than solid. This is particularly a problem if the connector is used repeatedly. I usually replace with Amphenol units, if I can get to them. Another great option is the Oak Hills BNC kit, designed to fit the hole pattern of the SO-239. 2. The other potential problem with UHF connectors, in my opinion, is the integrity of the shield connectivity through the connected pair. If the backshell loosens, there is no longer a solid connection either at the toothed parallel portion, nor through the backshell. This can be an issue in mobile or other high vibration environments and has caught me many times. Note that a type N, C or BNC pair makes it's shield connection through the inner spring tension sleeve, maintaining contact almost until the pair separates. The backshell is just used for mechanical, not electrical, purposes. FWIW Regards, Joel Joel R. Brett's question raises another, perhaps less difficult, one in my mind. If using the KRX3, can the DVR record the sub-receiver audio? [Elecraft] K3 -- DVR question
I recently added a digital voice module to my K3. It does everything it is advertised to do, and does it very well. One question occurs to me. The off the air recording feature is a real plus and will be handy. Is there any way to extract a useful digital copy of the recorded audio in a way that would be downloadable to the connected PC and then stored in an easily recoverable way? I know the audio could be resampled and stored using a sound card and PC software, but that would add another A/D conversion. It would be nice to be able to send someone the original data as a PC file of the way they sound, rather than sending it over the air. Regards, Joel Joel R. [Elecraft] K3: TT-700 Mic with higher K3 bias?
I'm thinking of packing the K3 for vacation and realized it wouldn't hurt to have a mic along. I don't want to lug a desk mic, and I have a drawer full of various electret models. One that is currently surplus is a Ten Tec 700. The only possible issue I see is that the Ten Tec Paragon I used it with supplied 4 V while the K3 provides 9. I don't seem to have the TT mic docs any more, so not sure what the acceptable bias range is. If it won't work directly, I can use an internal 9 V battery. If I knew if the battery went to the same place that the radio bias went, I'd be done ! Does anyone know whether these will play together? Thanks much! Regards, Joel Joel R. [Elecraft] K3 V3.03 Two band receive question
The ability to have the sub receiver on a different band is great, but I am having some problems getting it to do one thing that I had hoped it could do. A big plus would be to be able to communicate on one band, using the VFO B for transmit and the sub-receiver for receive, and then use the main receiver IF output to view a second band on the IF connected panadapter. Since there seems to be no way to get to the sub receiver IF. (?) The only way that I can seem to get the K3 to transmit on the VFO B frequency is in split mode. If I'm in split mode and change the bands on VFO A, it drops out of split and transmit goes back to VFO A. If I try to go to split mode while on different bands, it says "split N/A." I have found a way to do it. If I start up with VFO A and B on the same band with the sub rcvr on, I can engage split mode and then manually spin the VFO A dial until I get to the second band. Even with course tuning, this takes a lot of spinning. Am I missing something here?? Regards, Joel Joel R. I appreciate that the REMIOUPGD upgrade kit resolves ALC and band data pull-up issues -- neither of which are of interest to me at the moment. [Elecraft] RE: K3 and constant tone!
Jim, On the back of the K3 is a 1/4 jack that says "KEY." Closing that with a key or a footswitch puts out full transmit power in CW or SSB (and perhaps other) modes. It is separate from the connection for paddles, or amplifier keying and I use it just as you suggest. Actually, I do a close tune at 10 W out using the TUNE button, and then push down the key for a moment to trim at full power. My usual key/paddle is an old Brown Bros CTL combination paddle and straight key that works very well in this application. (I also plan to use the straight key for SKN in a few hours!) I use a J-38 with my Viking 2 for similar purposes, so it doesn't have to be part of the paddle assembly. Regards, Joel Joel R. [Elecraft] K3 RE: Keying SB-200
Ralf, et al, A solid state or relay interface is a good way to solve the interface problem, but there is another even simpler way, if it appeals to you. Heil makes a footswitch (FS-2) that keys two circuits, with a slight delay between them. Of course you can't do QSK, but either can an SB-200. I've used an FS-2 and they are easy to get used to. A nice feature is that if you forget (or miss) the switch, your 100 W just goes straight through. It's about $40. >From their Web site: The Heil FS-2 is a unique product specially designed for controlling two devices simultaneously. A typical application would be to key a transceiver with the BLACK lead and an RF power amplifier with the RED lead. Because of the design architecture, the micro-switch controlling the RED lead keys up first as the foot switch is depressed, thus the RED lead turns on before the BLACK lead thus insuring that the amplifier is keyed first before drive is applied from the transceiver that keys up last in the sequence. [Elecraft] RE: K3 Filter Questions
Dave, It is unlikely, but possible that your 250 Hz filter is defective. My original 400 Hz filter had a center frequency offset beyond the 250 Hz correction limit (as an 8-pole, supposed to be 0 Hz offset). If you can center the signal in another filter's bandbass (use CWT to be sure) and then switch to the narrow filter and it is no longer there, but noise is, tune the receiver (first try shifting the DSP) and see if you find it nearby. If it's way off you may need to configure it as if it were a wider filter (say 1 kHz) and have the DSP set to 1 kHz, so it will get through. I have had an opportunity to evaluate quite a few K3 filters lately, and this is the only one I've seen that was obviously off frequency -- in my personal K3 -- naturally ! Needless to say, Elecraft replaced the filter immediately and that fixed the problem. 1. When I turn my 250 Hz filter on in config, and then select that filter (which is FL5 here)I can hear noise coming through but no cw signals come through. I can see the signals on my PowerSDR/LP-PAN setup and CW Skimmer. Signal comes through all the rest of the filters O.K. Yes, I opened the radio, and all the filters are installed. [Elecraft] K3: Audio Balance in AFX Modes
I just installed some new speakers, one on each side, to be ready for two-frequency reception whenever I get the second receiver. I noticed a lack of balance between the two channels while using AFX. At first I thought it was a speaker problem, but after swapping everything from side to side without change, I noticed that it was nicely balanced if I turned AFX off. I realize that with the second receiver it won't be a problem, since there are separate AF gain controls for each channel - still it would be nice to have the AFX working as it should. Does anyone know of a way to adjust the balance between the two AFX channels, other than padding one of the speakers? Regards, Joel Joel R. [Elecraft] RE: K3: is it SDR?
Well, there is no "official ARRL position" on what is and isn't an SDR, but there is an FCC definition. This is part of an article on SDR I wrote for my every-other month beginner column in QST: <> The FCC has defined the SDR concept in terms of their commercial certification process as: ".a radio that includes a transmitter in which the operating parameters of the transmitter, including the frequency range, modulation type or conducted output power can be altered by making a change in software without making any hardware changes." The FCC expects this to yield streamlined equipment authorization procedures by allowing "manufacturers to develop reconfigurable transceivers that can be multi-service, multi-standard, multi-mode and multi-band.." In this context, they are envisioning radios that can be modified at the factory by using different software to meet different requirements. While they allow for field changes, their focus is different than ours <> In any event, In the article, I include the K3 within my definition of SDR (in contrast to what I call "software controlled radios") since its modulation and signal processing is under the control of user modifiable or upgradable firmware. The article is scheduled for Sept 08, so I'd appreciate any comments, since I'm sure other people might have different ideas. I haven't done the most recent beta version since my radio PC is currently "casters up." It doesn't matter the mode, BW, AGC or NR setting. [Elecraft] RE: K3 Product Review in QST
Gents, Let me put the speculation to rest, since I look at this on a daily basis, it might make it shorter to read The ARRL, in our usual disguises to avoid getting a "finely tuned sample" has actually ordered and received two K3s. One was a "bare bones" 10 W kit version -- the other a factory built 100 W full up model. Both have been received and the kit has been built and the other, less the not yet released options, is in the ARRL lab. Our original plan was to discuss both in a single review -- to be published before CT sailing season (BTW, I start sailing season early )! We have changed plans, since we don't have all of the options. We plan to do the review of the kit version a bit earlier, and the full up version after we have all the pieces. So the primary data should be available early, while the detailed assessment of the "full-up" unit will wait until we can make it "full up." I am happy to say that I will be the lead reviewer and yes, I will push my Viking II aside and bring it to the AWA Sunday AM/PM net some week soon! So that's the plan -- and like all plans, subject to change -- but the key data should be out there pretty soon! Regards, Joel Joel R. [Elecraft] [K3} More on K3
Interesting discussion about operating parameters displayed on the K3 screen. I think the only thing worse than not enough data is trying to cram too much, or too small, data into a small screen. I propose that an item for the SW development list (if it isn't there already) be a Windoze app that takes all key parameters and displays them in a window/bar along the top of the connected computer screen. That way, when contesting, or working from the home station connected to a computer, all desired operating info is available (perhaps user selectable set/sequence) along with the eventual spectrum scope and logging software. While on the road, you cut back to roughing it with a nice compact radio and associated compact, but readable, display. Regards, Joel Joel R. Or, perhaps there could be a bunch of user-selectable options for what gets displayed by default and what requires manual intervention to see. 73, Dick WC1M ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] [K3}AM Receive BW
I have a question about AM receive bandwidth options. I don't see in the manual a definition of the allowed DSP BW for each mode. I know that the 6 kHz xtal filter is suggested for AM, but wonder if the DSP bandwidth can go wider, perhaps 10 kHz for BC and solid SWBC reception? If so, can the FM roofing filter be switched in for WB AM use. Alternately, can a coupling capacitor be used across the filter slots to just use DSP for AM BC? Thanks! Regards, Joel Joel R.
