Re: [Elecraft] How Long will it take to assemble a K3/100??
It largely depends on your skill level and organization skills. I had mine up and running in under five hours with regard to actual assembly and calibration time. Parts inventory, layout and reading the assembly manual took an additional two hours. So, eight hours is a reasonable estimate for the average to advanced kit builder. Of course, fully enjoying the product will take the rest of our lives. :-) 73 - John - N6VCW From: Phil Hystad To: redtar...@nycap.rr.com Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, January 1, 2012 1:04 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] How Long will it take to assemble a K3/100?? [Elecraft] K3/10 to K3/100 Conversion Project
Yesterday, I received a KPA3 100 Watt PA kit for my K3/10. Less than an hour later my K3 was sending CW at 100 Watts (into a dummy load, unfortunately, since my shack is 50+ miles way from my lab at work). I now have a fully functional K3/100 that still does QRP with ease. The installation was extremely simple. There were absolutely no problems from start to finish. I'm quite pleased with the quality of Elecraft products and their straight forward documentation. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on internal vs external ATU for K3
I'll weigh in on this one, too, since I'm considering this option quite seriously. With my home-only station running QRP CW I use a nice 100+ Watt external tuner (even for QRP). It has the obligatory cable connected between it and the radio plus a grounding cable plus a power cable and either sits beside or on top. It is convenient in that it will initiate tuning when I press the "Tune" button on the radio, but it just looks messy to have an external unit attached to the radio, to the power supply and to the ground buss. I hate it! I want an internal tuner for no other reason than to keep my station neat and simple. Removing the clutter and other points of possible failures from the coax jumper, power cable and grounding cable is a huge bonus in my opinion! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K-2 Blue Display
I understand the desire to have a blue backlight for any LCD. They're very popular in many devices. Most of these I see, such as my NUE-PSK modem, have white characters against their blue backlights. Wouldn't the K3's LCD remain black when converting the backlight to blue? It would seem a little more difficult to read a black character on a blue background. How would one go about also converting the K3's LCD characters to white? It seems like it would be a cool project, but would it be worth the time, effort and expense? Perhaps for some. Just my US$0.02... I would be interested in converting the display in my K-2 to the now popular blue display available in many radios, including the vintage Drake line as well as some of the modern transceivers. Anyone try this yet? Where did you find the parts? Many thanks, and I enjoy reading the helpful posts on the Reflector. Re: [Elecraft] New to the Forum
My K2/10 took about 40 hours to complete. Every evening after work was spent plugging and soldering. Having such a nice radio with which to work that was made by me is very rewarding. Gary, It took me three weeks of evenings and weekends to build my K2/100 and all the options including a KAT-100 tuner. I'd get home from work, slam some food down my neck and get to it, stuffing and soldering. I'd start at 7:00pm local and work a couple of hours. On occasion I'd look up and it would be 1:00am. Long day in the IT salt mine but ultimately worth it. Gary W. Marklund wrote: > Jim, > > Nice to have the K3 assembly information. Have you or anyone else noted > the time to assemble a K2? [Elecraft] [K3] Modular Jack?
I've just finished assembling my K3 and cannot find any reference as to the purpose for the modular jack at the bottom, front, right part of the radio. I've searched on-line and through the message archives, as well as scanned through the Owner's Manual PDF for the key words "modular" and "jack" to no avail. I see it in the Operating Manual (p76) and several places in the Assembly Manual, but don't see any reference to it. What is the purpose of this jack? If this has been answered elsewhere and I've missed it, my apologies. Nothing seems to be mentioned on > the order form nor the Press Release PDF as to *why* it's important. I was mentioned in Eric's announcement yesterday - the antenna jack for the K144XV is mounted on a replacement rear panel - if you have the KPA3, you get a new fan panel. If not, you get a new "blank" panel. I wonder if new KPA3's will be shipping with the new-style fan-panel by default. I'm sure you could at least request the right panel if/when you order the KPA3. ~Iain / N6ML __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #06602 under construction
I share your enthusiasm for CW. I do like PSK31 very much, though. I also have some friends who have no desire for CW. For them, I plan on (shudder!) picking up a microphone. For that reason, I just installed the SSB board. Knowing my plans to do this when originally building the K2, I installed the MIC jack. I believe CW will be around for a long time. The subbands might shrink a little more here and there, but I doubt they'll ever go away altogether. As for the empty holes in the back, I just leave them empty. In the future, I may fill them with connectors. For now the rear faces the wall and it doesn't seem to care any more than I that they're empty. The effort required to fill them far exceeds my time available, which is best spent (IMHO) building other options I feel are beneficial inside the radio. The K2 is my main radio and has replaced every other HF radio I've ever owned. They just didn't compare to the performance of the K2. Although I prefer CW QRP, I may actually spring for the 100W PA someday. Having the option of QRO just seems like a good idea in the long run. It will be my last option, if I decide to actual go that route. There are far more important options for me to consider prior to QRO capability. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] N-gen: One Lug on DC Jack Too Large for One PCB Hole
Has anyone else had trouble with one of the lugs on the DC jack fitting into the smallest hole on the PCB for the N-gen? I had to trim one solder lug on the jack to make it fit. Otherwise the ground contact inside the jack would deform from being pushed into the PCB too hard (or risk damage to the PCB if a plug was inserted into the jack prior to mounting it onto the PCB). After the mod, it fit fine and the the N-gen works perfectly (including being powered from an external source). ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Duhh! I'm so stupid! I remember reading in the manual that some caps are marked with a zero and some aren't. I still reversed Caps: 12/15 and 35/31. Cap 12/15 values are "560". Cap 35/31 are marked "560". Guess what I did? Yup. I read value "560" and placed MARKING "560" in its place. Argh! What an idiot I am! Now I have to re-reverse them, so 80/17 will work right. Yipes! [Elecraft] K2: 80m & 17m Weak RX, no TX
Greetings, I just completed the Step 3 alignment on a K2. On 80m and 17m I have weak RX and no TX power. All other bands seem to work fine. The problem first became known when performing the Step 3, RX pre-alignment procedure. I couldn't hear any appreciable difference in receive audio when tuning L3 and L4 from a signal sent from another transmitter (set to the same frequency as the K2), sitting right next to the K2. I set L3 and L4 1.5 turns from top, as that's what worked well for the initial 40m alignment in Step 2. I continued on with the alignment procedures for the other bands in sequence and they tuned up just fine (by ear, so no quantitative measurements are available). When I got to 17m I had the same issue again. The other bands (15m, 10m and 12m) all went well, however. I had the same problems with the TX alignment. 80m adjustments of L3 and L4 and 17m adjustments of C32 and C34 showed no power output on my external wattmeter (Bird 43). On 20m~15m and 10m-12m I had no trouble getting full power output, however. On all bands except 80m and 17m the RX seems to work just fine. With TX power, everything seems to work fine with the same exception. What could I have missed? I thought my understanding of the alignment procedure was thorough. I'm not an RF engineer. As such, I'm at a disadvantage. I'm an experienced builder of many electronic devices, but this is my first transceiver. Any constructive advice would be appreciated.
