[Elecraft] K3 Question on Bandwidth setting via Macro
I have a macro which, while configuring my K3S for FT8 operation, sets BW to 4.0 kHz.the 6.0 kHz roofing filter is (apparently) automatically selected and I do not actually realize 4-ish kHz BW until I manually select the 13 kHz roofing filter. It seems from the Programmer's reference that the XFIL function is a Get not Set function. I would appreciate anyone who would set me straight on either what I am doing wrong or if this is a "problem" that can't actually be solved with the firmware/hardware as constituted. [Elecraft] K3S Milliwatt Output Level on 630 Meter Band
Been in discussions with Elecraft regarding my K3S (110900 and its performance at 472-is kHz. My measurements surprised me a bit...I was expecting a bit more output but my particular K3S will output barely 285 uW (when power set to nominal 1.0 mw) and a max of about .45 mw with power control set wide open. I understand that gain at this frequency is easy to get to make up for any shortfall...just wondering what sorts of measured output power others have seen on their K3? [Elecraft] K3S No TX Audio via USB
OKI have read several archived email threads regarding this issue some other hams are having without finding a resolution to my problem...please help! Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 Features and Pricing
On the other end of the price spectrum, way above the speculated-upon price of the KPA500, are the Tokyo Hy-Power amps (the 1500 model has ~2.5 dB more power but otherwise similar) for around $3500 and the SPE Expert 1K-FA listing at around $3900 (auto tuner built-in). Seems to me that the (doubtless) better quality of the Elecraft product compared to the ALS-600 makes the $2000-ish price for the KPA-500 sound quite reasonable. [Elecraft] Re: K3 6m pre-amp
Note that I installed this preamplifier in the RX IN/OUT path on the K3 rear panel To enhance the 6 meter performance of my K3 I built the U310 preamplifier as described on N6CA's website: http://www.ham-radio.com/n6ca/50MHz/50appnotes/U310.html Tuned up on an HP8970A noise figure meter it gives 11.2 dB gain and NF=1.3 dB. The receiver's performance on weak signals was significantly improved. I already had the parts but cost should not exceed $30.00 to duplicate this preamphard to beat. I have not done measurements on the radio/preamp combination to determine any negative effect on the receiver performance but the K3, which always performed well in the presence of strong signals, continues to do so. KK7P: Not a thing. It is called "RX ANT IN" on the KXV3. The port you are referring to is near the SO-239s and is intended for the KRX3 (which is not to imply it comes with the KRX3, or that it does not, and I don't know the answer). There is nothing missing in your assembly. I believe AUX RF (below ANT1 and ANT2) is reserved for a future RX ANT input for the Sub RX only (i.e. similar in function to the present RX ANT on the KXV3). Elecraft's drawing of the rear panel shows this port being a BNC connector just like the KXV3's BNC for RX ANT. Why all this complexity? When using the Sub RX for diversity receive, one might want to do the following: 1. Transmit on ANT1, assign Main RX to your transmit antenna and assign Sub RX to a receive only antenna on AUX RF (i.e. you're using your transmit antenna and a separate receive antenna for diversity receive). 2. Transmit on ANT1, assign Main RX to a receive antenna on RX ANT and assign Sub RX to another receive antenna on AUX RF (i.e. you're using two separate receive antennas for diversity receive). The way I understand it (which could be wrong!) is that AUX RF can only be used for the Sub RX, not the Main RX. I suspect this will become more clear after the KRX3 is introduced. There may be a little kit to add the BNC connector for AUX RF and appropriate wiring connecting it to the KRX3. In the meantime, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your present assembly! 73, Bill W4ZV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] TRANSLATION: K3 Subreceiver Status Update
AMEN! Tom AK2B wrote: Hi Steve, "The Believers" sounds more like a 60's rock group than a description of Elecraft customers. From my perspective, working for a small business, you become well acquainted with your customers over a period of time. A lot of these customers come back because they trust you based upon their past experiences. So, you are absolutely correct when you say that a company's word and reputation are paramount. I've been dealing with Elecraft since 2004. In that time I've had numerous occasions where I had to contact the company for a variety of reasons. In no case were my e-mails or phone calls ignored or sidetracked to a foreign country. Every experience I've had with Elecraft whether through their products or customer support has been positive. (I wish I could say that about more than a handful of the companies I do business with.) The simple truth is, any company can hit a bump in the road and will. At that point, they have to rely on their word and past reputation. Based upon Elecraft's track record, I don't feel the least worried. When I read posts like yours, I just assume you haven't any prior experience with the company in which to base your comments. It is very easy to look with a jaundiced eye towards a lot of disreputable businesses these days and then lump them all together. In the long run, though, it is not fair to those that who have done nothing to warrant it. I don't see Elecraft as a religion to which your "Believers" tag implies. They are a COMPANY of people of which I have had the pleasure of doing business with. I like what they sell and I like the way the treat me. It’s that simple. The K3 is as a major undertaking by a couple of wide eyed hams in Aptos who think they can build the world’s best amateur transceiver. I think they have done it – even though there remain a few bumps. I think they also feel a strong sense of responsibility in making sure that you not only get what they have advertised but that it also works as advertised. Frankly, I see it all as rather exciting that the K3 is still undergoing so many changes right before my eyes and that it only takes a few mouse clicks to implement them. But, make no mistake, the K3 as it sits is a remarkable product - maybe not finished - but, none-the-less, remarkable. The fact that the K3 will be getting even better with time leaves me feeling that my money was not only well spent – but is also producing dividends. Come to think of it, maybe I am a Believer. Re: [Elecraft] Computer Noise ruining 20 & 30m
Prior to buying my (ultra-quiet) Mac G5, I experienced a significant amount of noise from my PCdoing a search with a handheld shortwave radio in AM mode revealed it was primarily emanating from the AC power cable area. Clip-on ferrite chokes on the power cable were completely ineffective. I dismantled the computer, opened up the power supply and replaced the power supply input connector (unfiltered) with a filtered one purchased from Digi-key and the problem went away! Sorry, but I do not have the part number...they are available from Digi-key, Mouser, Newark, etc, etc. In the interest of maximizing profits the manufacturer omitted a filtered input connector and let me instead buy it aftermarket. As I am sure you all know...all the while that the good folks at Elecraft have been shipping out these first 100 K3s, their manufacturing operation (in house and outside assemblers) have been cranking out boards and modules and filters, etc. It is decidedly NOT a serial operation until the testing/packing phase arrives. The net result is that they likely have a large pile of boards now in house being tested and packed for shipping..they have already told us they are hiring staff to test and perform the other necessary functions in order to satisfy our K3-lust. While I have greatly lowered my expectations of when my K3 is likely to arrive, I am confident that the pace of deliveries will significantly increase over the next few weeks. Meanwhile...I am sure enjoying the assembly pictures being provided...thanks to all who have done so. The vicarious experience is better than nothing right now!
