[Elecraft] Larger icon for K4 mouse

2022-02-16 Thread John Kountz
My eyesight just can't resolve the minute arrow used to depict where the mouse
is contacting items in the K4 display. I had been told "they" were working on
it. Well, have "they" fixed it yet or is this just another thing yet to be
done?

[Elecraft] My K3's 10 meter band now functions

2020-12-16 Thread John Kountz
Thanks o all of those replying with serious considerations. In reviewing the
responses, one of you hit the nail on the head: a dumb operator error occurred,
the wrong antenna had been selected for the 10 meter band. I suppose most
knew, antenna selection is couple to band a factor I had forgotten.) How this
misalignment happened I'll have to attribute to a button push long forgotten.
Again, thanks top all and winning scores regardless of the contest,.

[Elecraft] My K3's 10 meter band is dead

2020-12-15 Thread John Kountz
Gentlemen,
There seems to have been ambiguity in my note concerning the operational
condition of my K3 (#3271). Clarifying the issue:
For 10 meters my K3 neither transmits nor receives. All other bands are fully
functional.
Any serious suggestions?.

[Elecraft] 10 METERS IS OUT

2020-12-13 Thread John Kountz
Gentlemen,
With all other bands functioning with grace and power, my K3 (#3271) its 10
meter band is dead both barefoot and when connected to my KPA 1500: neither
receiving nor transmitting. Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] Subtractive noise reduction

2020-09-12 Thread John Kountz
Folks,
This technique is integral to almost any disc record restoration software. It
is used most often to remove scratches and related damage from disc recordings.
Basically it consists of sampling the unrecorded lead in or 'quiet' interludes
on the disc to provide a spectral profile of the noise to be dealt with,
inverting that profile using it as a 'look ahead' filter through which
subsequent audio engraved on the disc is passed. It is entirely conceivable
that a similar technique could apply dynamically to material off the air
proceeding the incoming 'signal' and applied as that 'signal' is received.
Just another subroutine.

[Elecraft] RE; How well does the K3 work with lower power supply voltage . . .

2020-05-27 Thread John Kountz
Doug,
Like the Monte Python joke,
Observer: My dog has no nose
Question: How does it smell?
Observer: Horrible!
I have two K3 transceivers and have attempted to use them on several Field Days
with limited joy and unlimited disappointment. I've attempted to use one or
the other with 120 Watt solar cells and 100
AH GelCel and/or Lead Acid batteries which had been charged beforehand. As
long as there is healthy sunlight and you have a duty cycle of between 10 and
15 percent transmission with 85 to 90
percent monitoring you'll have a functioning station. But, when the sun goes
down or you get into a run you'll find yourself out of order.as the battery
drops below a nominal 13 VDC.. Operation after twilight, forget it. Again,
it's the 13 VDC cutoff. I've used 40 amp boost converters supporting a 13.6
VDC out for a range of input voltages with success, but you can end up frying a
battery as the converter struggle to suck 13.6 VDC out of a battery dipping
below 10.5 VDC on transmissions. Although I've not tried it, I suspect a
Yamaha or Honda 1 KW generator would keep the K3 running, but you're in another
category.
Have fun and 73,
John Kountz WO1S

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 191, Issue 29

2020-03-30 Thread John Kountz
It would be pleasant if a schedule including dates, times, frequencies and net
control QTH was available for all of the 'elecraft' nets. I suspect
participation would improve significantly.

40 meter net every Sunday at 1845Z on 7.280+/-
AM stations were spread out over the entire area of the band we frequent.
Conditions not the greatest apparently as turn out was low. Thanks to
those participating.
My apologies if my data is not correct. My notes were a little garbled.

[Elecraft] SSB net? What SSB net?

2019-11-02 Thread John Kountz
In fumbling winnowing through Elecraft Digest Vol 187, Issue 4, I came across
Item 16, a cryptic entry concerning an SSB net. I have to admit I was certain
such a net would exist but the frequency, time and day for said net are not
clearly spelled out. What are the specifics for this net??

[Elecraft] Anyone with interfacing KPA1500/K3/P3 and steppIR SDA2000

2019-04-03 Thread John Kountz
The P26 cable works fine to connect a P3 with a K3. The S14 "Y" is comprised
of two female connectors and one male and can be used to connect the P3 to the
K3 but not the SteppIR SDA2000 antenna controller. Given the requirement for
these three devices be interconnected is there anyone out there who has
surmounted this problem?

[Elecraft] Field Day experience with K3

2012-06-28 Thread John Kountz
Fellow K3 guys:
N6L, our 2AORG solar powered Field Day station was specifically configured
to demonstrate off-the-grid emergency opperations and thus provided an
excellent opportunity to put one of my two K3 (sn 3271 and 2215) to work
under less than the comforts of home.
Disquietingly, the K3 wasn't up to the task!
Let me explain: both the K3 and our second radio, a TenTec Eagle (Model
599AT sn 3051271430) were fed from the same 120 watt Power Film Panel /110
AmpHr GSM battery combination and operated at 100W output. In tandom
operation, the Eagle was not affected by momentary voltage dips (below 10
VDC) whereas the K3 would shut down.
With both radios in SSB mode and following the first K3 shut down, the K3s
operating environment was changed: different bands, different antennas,
reduced power output (to 10 watts) different operators and, finally
different solar /GSM battery combinations.
None remedied the problem.
Following from our experience, while the K3 and the Eagle offer excellent
operating characteristics, beware of the K3 under extenuating
circumstances; it's liable to let you down even at low output power levels.
The only potential solution may be found in a voltage boost device such as
the N8XJK boost regulators
http://stores.tgelectronics.org/Categories.bok?category=Boosters
Unfortunately, following the research necessary to uncover a source of
these devices Field Day was over.
Next year for sure!

[Elecraft] RE50B microphone connected to K3

2012-02-04 Thread John Kountz
Has anyone had experience in tying pin 3 to pin one in an XLR connector to
enable the transition from a balanced microphone to the unbalanced input of
the K3? In this regard I have used this arrangement to attach an
Electrovoice RE50B to my K3 and, although I have made satisfactory
contactswith this arrangement, I ask because many of you respondents appear
experienced in audio and may have alternatives to making this
interconnection.

[Elecraft] Cursor color

2011-04-02 Thread John Kountz
I have absolutely no complaint with my P3! I do have a request regarding
the color of the cursor. Currently is is the same color as the peak level
which in many instances overwhelms the cursor.
It would be very useful of, in a future version of the soft ware affiliated
with the P3, a choice of colors for the cursor was made available
