Re: [Elecraft] Regarding Heathkit
Stan, Wow - what a great story. A real pleasure to read something like this. I've cc'ed Heathkit as well - they may want to ask you to use their story on their web-site or other testimonial areas. 73's, John W. One in particular stands out because it is presently still in operation 24/7 to this very day! In August 1973, I met my future wife in a local gin mill (hey, it was a CLASSY gin mill with a band). She was a schoolteacher who had trouble getting up in the morning because her alarm clock was unreliable. Never one to pass up an opportunity, I built her a digital Heathkit GC-1005 alarm clock. It used those old orange-glow segment tubes you younger guys can't possibly relate to. It worked in more ways than one: we got married on December 22, same year. That Heathkit has been running constantly now for almost 38 years and, infrequent power outages notwithstanding, the only maintenance it has ever needed was a new line cord when the original one dry rotted out. No other maintenance has ever been done -- nada -- nothing. We are still going strong too and often kid around that If the Heathkit stops, we're in deep poop. 73 from Stan WB2LQF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

My 20MHz dual-trace oscilloscope and DMM still work - and I still use them. I hope they will make test equipment kits again. Some folks are still running their Heathkit radios too. 73's, John AJ6BC On Thu, Sep 8, 2011 at 3:46 PM, k...@baymoon.com wrote: In the 1950s, the Heathkit AT-1 and AR-3 were pure junk. Yes, the prices were low, but the design quality was awful. The DX-20, DX-35 and DX-40 were just okay but the VF-1 was trash. The DX-100 and DX-100B were okay if you were rock bound, but if you used the VFO - it was a VF-1 - and it was terrible on CW and drifty on AM. By the 1960s, Heathkit had decided to be the poor man's alternative to Collins KWM-2. And, to their credit, the SB- and HW- series transceivers were a good value for the money. But, once the Japanese came in with FT-101B and TS-520, Heathkit's response was inferior and could not compete on price. That was the beginning of the end of its ham-radio kit line. In terms of design quality and value, Elecraft blows Heathkit, Collins, and Drake away and is certainly giving Yaesu and ICOM a run for their money. So, who cares if Heathkit may make ham-radio kits, again? They've lost several decades of experience which they'll never regain. But I do not see evidence of a transverter interface. I was not sure if that was being included - appears not. Being QRP, this is not hard to overcome by use of a 10w 40-dB attenuator chip and pin-diode relay in the transverter to switch TR at the transverter. Many transverters can be ordered with a transceiver connection option. The KX3 with 2m option should look very attractive as an alternative to the FT-817 as IF radio for VHF and Microwave hams. For portable mw it is way more attractive than hauling the K3 around (which I am reluctant to do). My 10-GHz portable station utilizes the FT-817 with all components fitting into a Pelican 1520 case. I think the KX3 will fit in the same footprint as the FT-817. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-60w, 3400-? Hello Wayne, On Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 7:36 AM, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: John Westmoreland wrote: What is the ballpark cost for the KX3? Our target is still $799 for the basic 160-6 meter/10 watt/all-mode KX3 kit, less options. Slightly higher when factory assembled. Prices were based on cost of parts in May, and everything is going up industry-wide, so it's possible prices may change by the time we start shipping. Can I pre-order one today? I will call, you can charge my CC, and I will happily wait. Will users be able to download their own code to the KX3? Probably not. As with our other products, we carefully control all aspects of MCU and DSP firmware performance, based our very fast real-time operating system. Making the firmware open-source would create numerous customer support and design challenges. Will you tell me what MCU and DSP you are using? If users are allowed to experiment on their own, of course it will be at our own peril. On the other hand, the KX3 will support the entire K3 remote-control command set, so all existing and future PC/Mac/Linux K3 applications will work with the KX3. Plenty of room for creativity in that domain. I'm picturing control via smart phones, netbooks, and iPads. The KX3's I/Q analog outputs could be used for panadapter apps, etc. Backward compatibility isn't that important to me - but for existing users I am sure they appreciate this. I think the obvious selling points are that it is a handheld, and since I suppose Mizuho there hasn't been anything new on the market that was a true HF handheld. And also since it is SDR, users should be able download new code releases rather easily; even being able to experiment on their own. 73, Wayne N6KR Thanks and 73's, John W.
