[Elecraft] Gurus, Giving Up & Group Therapy
Humor on this Board is sometimes misunderstood. Oh well… My 3 rules: 1. If my $100.00 built from scratch and spare parts radio successfully communicates with your state of the art shack, my hobby has succeeded. 2. Everybody has an opinion and all of them are correct, but mine is more correct for me than yours. 3. There is very little on this board about the KX2 so it must be the closest to perfect radio out there Elecraft has designed. That is why I own one. Re: [Elecraft] Headphones for Hearing Loss
After reading the replies and trying out some options, I decided to try what John (K4TOO) suggested. I was amazed at the results of using the bone conduction headphones. My HF hearing loss is a result of machinery noise from the Submarine service with associated tinnitus. Basically I have 24/7 cicadas in my head, louder than normal speech volume. In my case, the conduction pathway apparently compensates for the tinnitus to a large extent so that speech under the band noise became much more discernible. On the down side, the conduction headphones were lousy for listening to Pink Floyd. Thanks to John and all who contributed. [Elecraft] Shack Equipment Storage
There is a difference between stupidity and ignorance. I claim ignorance. My shack is a room in a barn attic space, separate from the house, no HVAC so cooling is one window and heating is a space heater (when I am working the waves). Otherwise storage is ambient temp in the room. Winter temps typically down to low 20s, summer up to 90s. Sunny summer temp in the shack gets up to 120. My concerns are leaving the KX2 (#3007) and KXPA100 (#2802) in the shack and the effects of daily cycling the temp, especially in winter. My “internet research” (maybe an oxymoron?) has such varied opinions it is worthless. What say you, my fellow Elecraft faithful? This new OT topic and the preceding old OT topic combined has been one of the greatest examples of free speech I have ever seen on-line. Kudos to this forum for open and honest participation, it fills me with hope to see such a wonderful exchange of contrasting viewpoints without digital censorship. Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide
As for me... I am an oddball tinkerer. I brew beer, make guitars, string beads, raise goats and make leather bound books, as well as fire up my radio from time to time. I was prepared to get my novice license in the early 1970’s. My parents said no. It was always in the back of my mind. I licensed a couple of years ago, got a KX2 and then started experimenting with anything that could be called an antenna, that is to say anything that conducts a current (from a lawn chair, to an umbrella, to hundreds of feet of abandon in-place power lines). Damn the theory, full speed ahead; all I needed was a match from the magical auto tuner. As a hobby, this one allows for tremendous diversity in what your interest in radio is with the same goal: tossing out a CQ and seeing who you get. Whether you build from scratch, buy off the shelf, rag chew, CQ or go digital, the goal is the same. Make a contact, meet someone you never have before, and enjoy it while you can. Who cares if one operator is an electronics dolt while another is a PhD EE? It is about contact, and Human contact in any form is precious. I simply like the challenge of making contacts with antennas, in the opinion of the more learned, “that won’t work.” I have been told to “Read the antenna book” because my experiments are “illogical.” I guess I have to delete the contact I made using a chicken wire antenna? Let’s all remember that Maxwell, Marconi, Hertz, Popov, Bose, Hughes and Fr. Roberto Landell de Moura did not have the internet or the Antenna Book. They had each other. Just my foul smelling overly verbose opinion on the matter. Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants
I watched a few track presentations as well as all the sponsor events. Elecraft’s were excellent. I found most of the other companies presentations to be much lower in quality. One demonstration of a product was 30 minutes of interface on a touchscreen that was unreadable and unfocused in the presentation. The overall virtual conference interface was unnecessarily over-animated and thus slow over cell phone data streaming (I was camping at the time). The track videos I watched were better produced by the individual presenters than most companies, and most had good technical advice to pique my interest. Thanks to Elecraft for the opportunity to interface during the KX2 “X-Ray.” I am hearing impaired and was sincerely impressed that this company was willing to look at the possibility of incorporating Bluetooth hearing aid connectivity to their radios as a future opportunity for SSB. The time-delay inherent in Bluetooth for use with CW was something I never considered and I appreciated the tech details provided. Regarding the contest I will make no public statement regarding my communications with the convention’s organizers. There was, eventually, a public posted comment that only ONE gamer was identified and removed. During the first few days of the post “live” session I intentionally acquired enough points, playing the “game,” to be at least 3rd on the board for that day, but never showed up. So much for that. Maybe Elecraft should simply host their own virtual event. The only incentive I need is to be a better Ham, both technically and operationally. Have owned KX2 #3007 for a little over a year. I recently had to replace my at-home antenna because of weather (wind) damage. I initially tuned the new antenna every 20 kHz through the 80/40/20m bands, and had no issues with matching on frequencies between tune points on first use (1.0-1.3 SWR) Since then, the ATU needs to be re-tuned each use as the SWR on power-up is usually 25 or greater on the last used frequency. Note that the antenna is disconnected when not in use. Any ideas? I have been using a KX2 with the ATU a little over a year, my first and only radio. I love it and have had great success in field throwing a 58’ wire up a tree and a 13’ counterpoise on the ground. Been experimenting with different antenna at home, so far a folded dipole using about 128-130’ of wire being the best performer on 80/40/20m. I put together an external power supply using a security system sealed 12V battery in a small plastic ammo box, an auto lighter plug and a cheap voltmeter. I have operated for over two hours at 10W using this battery rig and the whole station fits in a small $15.00 backpack. You are not mistaken, however, posts regarding the KX2 are few and far between. [Elecraft] Cruise Lines
Going on a cruise in a few months, so I emailed the cruise line about operating at sea with a KX2. Here is the reply: “Ham Radios, Shortwave Radios or Satellite Radios (portable or standalone) may not be brought on board as they pose a risk of interfering with onboard navigational equipment.” OK! The line has a right to say no. But... I have operated my KX2 QRP 40m portable with a GPS and Laptop in the transmission RF envelope with no interference problems. I know maritime uses mostly 156-162 MHz for ship to ship or ship to shore, some specific HF frequencies (outside of our bands) are allocated for emergency communications and satellite navigation is typically 1150-1610 MHz. Most ships now have WiFi and rely on phone apps for on-board communication, so there are a few thousand phones on board operating in the GHz range that are no problem. Also, as a USN Sub Service vet I learned a few things about at-sea comms 40-some years ago, and considering the improvements in our technology... Sorry if I seem to be ranting, but opportunities to operate at sea (for a OM in Ohio) are rare and this cruise line’s position seems to me to be the easy answer: ban all Hams outright. [Elecraft] KX2 Antenna Curiosity
I have had my KX2 with the ATU for about 10 months and operate on 40m QRP SSB from various locations. Experimenting with different antennas I have experienced best results with a 58.5’ wire tossed about 25’ up a tree with a 16.5’ counterpoise. I ran the same length wire from my house to the workshop, grounded the shield side of the cable, and have seen similar results to the field setup. Is there some engineering/design factor of the KX2 for this type of antenna setup? I am planning to setup a Dipole at home, but as a newbie am wondering if the “ideal” Ham Dipole can be expected to improve performance.
