[Elecraft] K3/P3 TXD tap
I used serial data with my K3S/P3/Steppir/HF Amp set up for a long time by using Y cables to get data to all of them. So finally decided to change over to USB 100% which I did but now using the CBLP3Y cable on the K3S/P3 combo I am still going to need some kind of Y connection again to tap off of RXD/TXD. I am looking at making a Y cable to install between the P3 PC DE9P connector to pick up RXD or TXD from it and let the amp monitor that. I know you can buy cables and even circuit boxes to do this but I wanted to build this one myself as I built the one Steppir used and it worked great. I need more than just band data provided by the ACC plug for the amp and Steppir. Too bad there is not a RXD/TXD tap in the K3 ACC plug or a tap plug in the P3. [Elecraft] Memory Chaining Anomoly
When trying to use the CW Memory Chaining function I ran into an anomoly in that it depends on when you "tap" the memory M1-M4 button during the sending of the message. Example.. If the memory contains my call K4PI.. I hit the button during the sending of the 4 it comes out on the air as KSPI or KIPI. If it hit the button during the P it comes out K4AI or K4EI. The one place it does work correctly is if I tap it during the K. I have monitored on the air to confirm that it is not having a problem just in the sidetone. Mike, I agree on the need for a separate CW and SSB equalization selection group. [Elecraft] Musings on Noise Reduction
Lee, I experienced the same thing on 160 M duing the CQ WW CW test. I was single op there all weekend and we had storms that stayed in the area all weekend and without the K3 NR I would have headed home early. I use a full size transmit 4 square and have to attentuate all I can and the NR made it enjoyable. Without it just noise and static crashes. Amen Brian on the shift control. That is still my biggest complaint. Shift needs to be to the point with a narrow filter where it seems continuous instead of steps. There is a very very fine point where shift is too much or not quite enough and with out being close to continuous that point is hard to achieve. I am happy to get the new 10 hz shift control. Been waiting on that since I bought the radio. It works great. Just in time for the CQ WW. Next thing I would like to see is more than 1 selection for RX EQ. Need one setup for CW and one for SSB. I am anxious to see what the new board will do. I have used QF1A for many years and never found a radio yet where it did not enable me to copy signals much better. [Elecraft] Amp Keying Problem
I finally decided to hook my 6 M amp up to the K3. I have been using the K3 with an Alpha 76 all winter with no CW keying problems. The amp on 6 M is a Command Technology and I am having keying problems on CW. SSB no problem.. Below are the details. 1.Depressing the paddle, the K3 will key the amp into transmit mode but no power out no matter what the drive power level is. Using normal VOX mode. 2 If K3 is put into transmit mode manually with XMIT button and then the paddle is depressed amplifer power out is normal. 3.Tried increasing TX DLY up to maximum and no change in symptoms. I know there have been problems with some transcievers putting out a very narrow spike on initial key down which makes the amp think it is being overdriven and it will inhibit power out. I can use the amp as long as I use the XMIT function. [Elecraft] K3 Equalizer by Mode
I thought I remembered there was going to be an enhancement to have the RX EQ and possibly TX EQ displayed by mode. I was not able to find it's implementation in any document. It is a problem to change settings between SSB and CW so I just leave mine at default. Also still waiting for mod to make SHIFT steps much smaller. Annoying with the large steps on CW and narrow filters. Needs to appear as a contiuous adjustment. Just a note, my audio pot gives full volume when I go to full CCW now. I think that may have been a problem with others. [Elecraft] K3 SHIFT/WIDTH QUESTION
Just finished SN/1542.. One probably operating question I have is about the SHFIT/WIDTH in CW. In the II mode the controls work as advertised but in the I mode the roofing filter switches back to FL1 anytime I move SHIFT/WIDTH. It reverts to FC *.050 for SHIFT and will not change with the Shift Knob and the Width will not go lower than 600. I have tried setting them up following the instruction on page 34 with no sucess. [Elecraft] K3 TAPE ON DISPLAY
When assembling SN 1542 I never saw anything about removing the clear tape over the display. Anyone know of any problem there might be with leaving it attached to the display? [Elecraft] K3 PSK31 VIA PADDLE
Using my K3 on RTTY and sending via my paddle I have no problems. On PSK31 I can decode signals but my outgoing PSK31 signal has some kind of problem. I can monitor it on another rig set up for PSK31 and nothing ever decodes. I can hear the data changing but apparently it is not correct. [Elecraft] CONFIG AFV TIM
I asked this before but could never get an answer. At one time I used the setting in CONFIG AFV TIM but I cannot get it to work anymore. It just has two - - in the window. I am in TECH MD and have latest updates. It quit working some time back and apparently one of the upgrades killed it. [Elecraft] KIO3B Main Board Repair
I have ended up with 2 bad KI03B boards E850645. Both bad in the USB circuit. I did some basic checks resistance wise they recommended but found no problems. Elecraft said chances of repair was slim and would not be economical to try. I think all the other functions are okay ie think they are still working okay if you come in via the serial port. Seems a shame to toss them into the dumpster but unless someone has had some experience of repairing them that may be the route. I need two K3S boards but Elecraft sales says they do not stock these board individually so wondering if someone might by some odd chance have them. I emailed Support in case they might know where some are and waiting to hear back from them. I need the E850646 Digi IO board and the E850647 Audio. Also need the E100558SS small panel. In case you might be wondering I don't need the E850645 board. [Elecraft] Power Control
Just finished installing the DSP board after the return from Aptos and then loading the latest program updates. I know when turning the power control there is a known dead spot between 8 and 13 watts which I hope them can correct soon, but I noticed that there is an increase in the receive gain at this point. When I turn the Power knob from 8 to 13 in receive mode the receive gain jumps up 1 S unit almost like the preamp was turned on. I tried different setting of the preamp and the ATT but the gain wll always increase 1 S unit over whatever the S meter is reading when the power level indication moves from 8 to 13 watts.. I am looking at it on 6 M and have not tried it on other bands but wondered if anyone else notices this? Nothing I can't live with.. [Elecraft] K3 6 M QUIRK
Wonder if anyone has seen the following problem. Nothing that is keeping me off the air. K3 is SN in the 1500 range. It is fairly bare bones with just the IF OUT/RX ANT strip installed. Also 100 watt module. On 6 M I use a 20 DB preamp that is powered from and external power source the the RX ANT IN/OUT connects the preamp. When adjust the transmitter power out, when I reach the point where the power meter scale changes from 0-100 watts to 1-10 watts the receiver gain drops by 20 db, the amount of the preamp. It appears that the RX ant has been switched back to normal antenna input. It becomes good again as I increase the output power to the point where the scale changes back to 0-100 W. Weird indeed. Normally I run above 10 watts on 6 M so no problem but this should not happen. Elecraft techs suggest reseating the front panel. I have another K3 , later serial number that does something similar but in reverse. When I cross the transmitter power scale change from 0-100 to 1-10 there is a very minor increase in the receiver gain. I can see it on the P3 and just hear it in the speaker. This amount not a problem to me but apparently something happens in the receiver circuit on 6 M when the power scale switches over. Other bands appear okay. I know there was some kind of firmware patch way back to correct for transmitter power jumping from around 8 to 13 watts or something like that. Don’t remember the exact numbers. I use the Antlion Modmic which attaches to the Bose and I have gotten excellent audio reports after setting up the K3 mic equalizer. It is in the $32 range and is an Electret mic. [Elecraft] K3 Price Ideas
I have a K3 I am planning on selling to a local here but want to get some input as to a fair price. I have looked at many ads for used gear but with the many variation of the K3 it is hard to come up with a price. I have a K3 SN 5895 that was factory assembled with the KAT3, KIO3, and KSYN3A synthesizer. It is very clean. No filters other than the standard SSB filter.
