If you have a P3, you'll want to load both. They work together to greatly reduce serial I/O delays with PC applications such as HRD. There are many other improvements as well. See release notes for both K3 and P3 below. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * K3 Release Notes MCU 4.12 / DSP 2.60 / FPF 1.13, 9-15-2010 * K3-to-P3 SERIAL COMMUNICATIONS: The K3/P3 RS232 interface has been optimized to eliminate problems with VFO tuning and some third-party PC applications such as HRD. * DVR TRANSMIT MONITOR SEPARATELY ADJUSTABLE: Applies to TX message play as well as transmit playback of the 90-second loop. First, set CONFIG:TX DVR to IND (independent) and exit the menu. Next, hold in the CMP/PWR knob to select MON. Holding the knob in a second time alternates between MON xx and DVR xx. You can adjust MON or DVR level during transmit playback. * NO GAP IN 6-METER POWER RANGE: The PA now kicks in at 9 W on 6 m, rather than 13 W as on the other bands. This eliminates the original gap from 9 to 12 W on 6 meters. * 60-METER CHANNEL HOPPING DOWN TO 5.366.5 KHZ WORKS: Previously, the PLL voltage would sometimes go to zero in this case. * VFO B to A COPY NOW UPDATES THE P3. This is useful for re-centering the P3 at a desired center frequency. For example, you could leave VFO B set to the center of a band segment. After tuning VFO A around, use VFO BA to go back to the center. (To use VFO BA, assign CONFIG:VFO BA to a PFx or Mx switch.) * K144XV S-METER CORRECTION: The S-meter is now properly compensating for the added gain of the K144XV. * K144XV BAND-DATA OUTPUT ADDRESS RANGE INCREASED: Originally, CONFIG:XVn ADR was always set to “INT TRN1” to enable the K144XV. This set all band data outputs on the ACC jack to 0. Now, XVn ADR has of “INT TRN0” to “INT TRN9” for the K144XV. Band- data outputs are set accordingly. This may be useful when the K144XV is used as an IF for higher-band external transverters. (If you have a K144XV, the original INT TRN1 will now be INT TRN0 in the menu. This is the new recommended setting if you’re not using external transverters in conjunction with the K144XV.) NOTE: When using the K144XV, XVn RF can be set to the RF band of an external transverter that is using the K144XV as an I.F., rather than at the 2-meter band edge (144). P3 Release Notes MCU 00.36/ 9-16-2010 * Center frequency and markers now work on UHF transverter bands. * Additional latency reduction for K3 commands. * Extensive changes to the RS-232 handler. To obtain the full benefit of the improvements, use K3 firmware 04.12 or later. * Added Knob Tap and Knob Hold to the MENU. * Added 8215 kHz to transceiver menu. * Fixed missing single line in bitmap display upload. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

AW: [Elecraft] K3 KPA3 bias adjust
Locate the BIAS pot at the front of the KPA3, between the heat sink and the KPA3 shield. Note what the display current is in the VFO B readout when you tap the Display button and turn the VFO B knob to the current readout. In RX, it should be 1.0A or so. In XMIT (not TUNE), it should be about 1.90 to 2.0A when the Power knob is set to 12w or above so the KPA3 is made active (but there is no RF output since XMIT is used). Or you can press the PTT button but do not speak. If there is much more current than this, set the BIAS pot to minimum (fully counter clockwise). Then tap XMIT (not TUNE) and note what the current is in VFO B's readout. Slowly turn up the BIAS pot until you see 400-500mA more current that was seen with the BIAS pot at minimum. 73 OE6KYG KX1 244 K2 1331 K3 115 -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft- boun...@mailman.qth.net] Im Auftrag von Jan Erik Holm Gesendet: Samstag, 03. Settings were as alike as possible, band had 5 signals from S-7 to S-1 (in QSO). 20m ssb. Same speakers, same ant. Sensitivity: 9=hiss was high pitched and somewhat irritating (no sig) with sig, hiss not discernable. 3= most quiet with no sig, more base in audio. 1=similar base, higher hiss than 3, but sigs above S-6 sounded vy natural. All three on vy weak sig could not discern any difference. NR alone: 9= good result but slow processor (?) caused some blasting when NR knob turned. highest setting kills most hiss. Irritating when knob turned. 3= good result, vy vy small processor delay, highest setting kills most hiss. 1= great result, vy vy small proc. delay, highest setting kills all hiss. NB alone: 9=vy gud on ignition noise, kills all; no effect on other noises all knob settings. 3= IF wide 7 gives some chop on sigs, otherwise good. DSP T3-7 same chop. Lower both settings-no effect on no signal condx. no automobile near by. 1= H only- no effect on no sig condx; H + 9 gave same result, no car near. u Tune 9=Absolutly great, kills many kinds of noise and BCI. Built in Display etc., great fun to use. Bandscope great for this kind with jagged peaks from bottom of the scale (like all of them now days). Very useful. 3= Bare bones with lots of multi function knobs, This one is not for the knob twiddler. 1= Two huge tuning knobs good, but weak weak usefulness of band scope... mostly useless. strange sometimes Cut BW PBT interact (turn one affects the other in a bad way) sometimes does not do this. AF is more base thus less hiss seems to be there. Overall score: 9= Best base rig, super fun to play with, performance within others' range. 3= marginally better on sensitivity but too close to really call; not enuf knobs. 1= dull looking, hard to love, but lots of info on-screen; Very flexible Ant and VFO A/B and Sub. handling. AW: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Stability
i agree Ver 2.19 sounds very good for me AGC and also NR 73 OE6KYG KX1 244 K2 1331 K3 115 Personally I like the frequent firmware releases too. It's good to have it developing and improving with new features etc. The whole firmware process strikes me as honest, open and customer-friendly and miles ahead of what you would get with some other manufacturers! 73 to all Geoff G3UCK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 FW 2.10 and dual BP and NR
there have been some threats where the K3 was called a little noisier as an K2 due to K3´s DSP with newest Firmware try dual BP and maybe NR (3.1) you will get the same or better soft audio as with an K2 I am very impressed and happy... now waiting for 2nd receiver 73 OE6KYG KX1 244 K2 1331 K3 115 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. AW: [Elecraft] AGC Information Please - Curious
Hi Lyle ! i obseved, that the combination HLD (30ms) and PLS (on) not working well I have dedected pulses every second at my qth - so hold let the agc hold for 30ms and agc goes down... downsizing HLD to zero it works well, so maybe you can also include that any hold will be disabled when PLS is decaying back 73 oe6kyg You can tap DISP when any of these are displayed and a short help message will scroll across the VFO B display. AGC HLD (Hold?) In slow AGC, this is the time that the AGC will hold its most recent peak value before starting to decay. AGC PLS (Pulse?) This defines the width of a signal that is considered a pulse (like ignition noise) instead of data (like a CW dit). If a pulse is detected, the AGC rapidly decays back to its previous value after the pulse ends. Otherwise, the AGC assumes it was a signal and responds accordingly. AGC SLP (Slope?) This allows you to change the flatness of the AGC. Some people like ift flat (very strong signals and moderately weak signals all have the same loudness). Others prefer that stronger signals drive the audio level alittle harder than weaker signals. AGC THR (Threshold?} Determines the level below which signals do not drive the AGC. AGC-F (Fast) Sets the decay rate of the AGC in Fast mode. AGC-S (Slow) Sets the decay rate of the AGC (after the Hold time) in Slow mode. Please use non engineering terms The best way to understand what these do is to play with them, adjusting one parameter and operating the radio until you are comfortable with what that parameter does, then changing another, etc., until you know what they all do. Then adjust them to optimize the K3 for your personal preferences. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 AGC strange behavior
just saw, that when you switch off AGC, the S-meter and receiver Gain will stay at the level where it was at the moment when you switch off agc - for example noise at S4, switch off AGC - S-meter will still show S4 and gain is also reduced, switching off antenna before AGC off and antenna on again will show S0 and full receiver gain... using latest firmware 73 OE6KYG KX1 244 K2 1331 K3 115 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] orion agc vs K3
i had the chance to do an A/B comparing between Orion-I and K3 this evening the om with the orion is an cw-operator and an musican with fine ears. he came to me because he is not happy with orion on Europe crowding 80meter band so I searched for orion settings special agc on web and found some statements I tried all possible settings for agc on orion.. but could not find a situation where the raugh noise between cw-signals was fine so the only way was to switch off agc and reduce rf-gain - then we found a setting where orion sounds near k3 (by the way K2 sounds very fine under these conds) !!! these was seen only on 80meter evening with heavy European qrm !!! 73 oe6kyg ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
