[Elecraft] HP-8640b UPDATE
Hi, Well I just didn't feel like giving in to Murphy. Searched the Internet and found 2 good sites dealing with the HP-8640b. One site is EB5ABV where I found the answer to the frequency counter/readout problem. I managed to repair the broken wafer and now the freq. counter/display works great. The other site is VE7CA, where, with a little trouble shooting found the answer to the no output problem..the Final Amplifier Hybrid module is NG. He does offer suggestions for substitutions which I may have to try. Has anyone on these lists dealt with the same problem, if so, what was your remedy, and any possibility someone has a surplus stock of these original parts? I guess as a bona fide home brewer/experimenter, I just can't give in to Murphy.yet. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] For Sale HP 8640B---NOT
Hi, Well it looks like Murphy has struck me hard. I received a few inquiries regarding the HP 8640b, some requesting pictures. So I figured I'd show the generator into a frequency counter and scope. I noticed some erratic readings on the freq. counter, so I hooked up the scope and saw the amplitude was erratic as I switched the attenuator. Some positions showing nothing. By touching the wafer of the attenuator switch (inside rear) the readings changed. Put some deoxit on the contacts, rotated the switch, and now.No Output. The internal freq. counter shows its oscillating but still no output. The AM and FM modulators still work. So, final outcome isI cannot sell it as working, and don't have the skills or desire to mess with it. I DO have the service manual on CD. Many have asked if the attenuator works, I think so. I say this because I disconnected the output of the RF assembly BEFORE it goes to the attenuator, and there is NO OUTPUT from the RF assembly (yet the internal freq. counter shows RF and changes appropriately). I will sell it AS IS with the CD manual, to the highest offer, plus shipping and packing. Don't forget this is very heavy, and will require me to double box, etc. Pick up can be arranged in the Newtown PA or Lawrenceville NJ areas. I can send pictures to anyone still interested. Sorry for any false hopes from the original message. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] For Sale. HP 8640B Signal Generator
Hello all, I have for sale an HP 8640B Signal Generator with options 001 and 003. There is a problem with the frequency counter readout, the range switch needs a new front wafer for the readout to work properly. I know it needs a new wafer because there is a connecting finger missing from the wafer (it broke off while attempting to clean the switch). It will read properly from .5 to 16 mhz, then the display reads erroneous but the output continues to 512 mhz. All other functions work. If you have an external frequency counter this does not pose a problem. Front panel is clean, top and sides have some scratches. Price: $200 plus shipping, insurance, and packing material, it's heavy! Local pickup ok. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] a story that will have a happy ending, soon (slightlyOT)
Hello all, Regarding QRP-l and the mention of E-bay. I made the mistake of trying to help some fellow hams out who were looking for 2 meter crystals and pointed them to an E-bay auction, I did this on QRP-l. Since that incident, all my posts are now awaiting moderator approval. I questioned the moderator about this and was pointed to the following URL: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/qrp-l specifically While this list may be used to buy, sell, trade or seek QRP equipment for sale, no auctions are to be conducted, discussed, facilitated or referred to in any way. Violators of this policy will be subject to moderation without notice. To be clear, this pertains especially to eBay. Anyone using the list to promote his own auction will be removed from the list without warning. So, please don't make the same foolish mistake I made. You will find yourself banished to the Pointless Forest. I have learned my lesson, the rules must be obeyed or you will be in trouble. [Elecraft] K2 compared to ?
Hello all, Like most others on this list, I absolutely love my K2, and I also have a second rig, kenwood ts-940sat. The ts940 has been waiting for parts for over 3mos. and I was considering replacing it. I would like to know of other list members personal experiences comparing the K2 receiver to either the Icom 756 pro series, the Knwd TS2000 or most specifically, the Yaesu FT1000MP MKV Field. If anyone has any personal experiences comparing the TS940s to the above mentioned rigs, I'd like to hear if you think its even worth replacing the 940s. Happy and Healthy New Year to all. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] #3120 if FINALLY Alive and Well
Ron, Sounds like you built a fairly recent Heath/Zenith TV. I built a Heath 19 color in 1970 and you stuffed each board (about 5 or 6 if I remember correctly) and then wired them all together, no plug and play wiring harnesses. The entire TV was built within a metal enclosure, which then slipped into the wooden enclosure of your choice. I was able to operate my Galaxy V mk III, full output, with no TVI. When a neighbor would complain about TVI, I would bring them into my house, show them my TVI free TV, and explain to them it was their TV picking up unwanted signals, by poor design. That Heathkit made it so easy to explain. 72 Larry WA2DGD Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: Ha! Talk about 'savoring the anticipation'... Actually, the Heath TV was one of the simplest of kits. I built one. It was really a great disappointment. All the boards were pre-stuffed. Indeed, service, if it was needed, was to pull a board and swap it with a new one at the Heath center. I never needed to do that. Gave the working TV set to Goodwill about 15 years later. He hasn't built either of them yet, but every time I mention how much I like mine, he thinks about it. It's interesting, because he has built numerous complicated and difficult kits in his life, including the Heathkit TV set, which I believe to be one of the most elaborate kits they made. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] #3120 if FINALLY Alive and Well
Eric, You remember correctly. You did buy the enclosure from Heath, you had a choice of a light oak colored wood, or a much darker walnut colored wood. When Zenith bought them out, the TV kits were basically Zenith models, all the boards were built, and it even came with premade wiring harnesses with multipin connectors on the ends that snapped on to mating connectors on the circuit boards. It took about 2-3 hours to snap everything together. EricJ wrote: That's what I remember about the Heath TV, too, Larry. I built one just before Christmas 1968, and stuffed every single board myself. When I saw Ron's note, I thought I must be getting older than I thought! I'm sure I bought the enclosure from Heath, though. Maybe they started pre-assembly later in the game. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 noise and remote PA
Sam, Funny you should mention that. In my shack, I have the K2 with a KIO2 and also a 2 meter rig nearby. Whenever the K2 is on, the 2 meter rig stops scanning and hangs on 146.625 and just breaks the squelch. As soon as I shut the K2, scanning resumes. Sam Smith wrote: I noticed this at Field Day. The club was using a repeater with output on 146.625. As soon as I turned on the K2 we got hash on that frequency. Since then I have checked it at home with no computers anywhere around and confirmed the problem. -- 73 Larry WA2DGD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] WTB Dow key relay
Hi Eric, Thanks for the tip on the mic connector. Great idea. Larry WA2DGD EricJ wrote: They shouldn't be hard to find. I saw some on a few of the boat anchor sites for 2 bucks. A lot of signal generators and other similar test equipment of the time used them also so you often see them at swap meets in the milk cartons full of odd cables. And if you need one absolutely right NOW, I remember we used to cut the center pin off a PL-259 connector and screw it on. It was the same threads. It can be a little touchy to get just the right center pin length, but it worked FB on my DX-35 during the brief period that traumatized me on phone and left me a confirmed CW man for 45 years.
