[Elecraft] K3 Tune works, XMIT button produced no power.

2014-10-19 Thread Larry Lopez
transmit power is set to 10 watts.
mode is AM, but that doesn't seem to matter.

When I press tune into a dummy load/swr meter, it tunes normally:

The K3 shows swr and power on it's meters.
external swr meter show power also.
swr is 0.0 on both the K3 and the external swr meter.

When I press xmit:
The K3 shows swr nothing, power shows one bar.
Also, power does not show on an external swr meter.

I have no clue.

I was testing an old S2-30 antenna tuner into a dipole.

The antenna SG-230 tuner is completely out of the circuit now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Tune works, XMIT button produced no power.

2014-10-19 Thread Larry Lopez
Clarification:

I press the tune button and it tooks.

When I press the the xmit button little happens.

When I press and hold down the xmit button it goes into permanent rune mode
and it show output and swr just fine on the K3 and the swr meter.

[Elecraft] [K3] Flickering ALC/

2014-10-12 Thread Larry Lopez
Executive summary, intermittent connections in a trap vertical caused the ALC
to go crazy.

I suddenly had bizarre behavior when adjusting my mike level for JT65.
When trying to get the ALC to be 4 bars it was all over the place.

It was flickering on and off and sometimes the tones were modulate at a
rhythmical rate.
Power level was pretty constant.

I thought it might be RF getting back into the shack or the PC picking up RF
or bizarre driver behavior.

I thought it might have something to with the new inverted V antenna causing
RF to get back in the shack.

None of this was the problem.

The R3 Vertical was doing.

It's been up for a very long time and when I switch to the new antenna all
the problems go away.

2014-05-19 Thread Larry Lopez
What's interesting is that all of 60 Hum and it's harmonics are gone.
The line out is 2.

I have the Mike volume:

Balance is all the way over to one channel.
Volume in full

I adjusted line out to flat top and halved it.

The JT65/JT9 display looks good now.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Hum JT65/JT9 and Vox. Resolved.

2014-05-18 Thread Larry Lopez
So I decide to give up and set the audio level right.
So I get the free for private use sound card oscilloscope
http://www.zeitnitz.de/Christian/scope_en.

I picked this one because it was first when I goggled sound card
oscilloscope.

Very nice.

But gee, there are 2 channels for the mike and a balance control.
One channel has the signal one channel has chaff.

So I set the balance control to kill the chaff.
I then raise the volume in the K3 line out until it flat tops
and I back it off by 2.

next step, get it to sample at 48000.

obsessive, I am.

[Elecraft] [K3] split mode apparently not working with WSJTX JT9.

2014-05-15 Thread Larry Lopez
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

WSJTX does not seem to be setting
VFO B frequency with the K3 in split
mode and with WSJTX in split mode.

Many web pages sat that in split mode
WSJTX moves the split fequency around
in 500 Hz increments so that WSJTX
can cover the 4K Hz width of the combined
JT65/JT9 allocation.

The 6K KHz audio filter seems to be working fine
for receive.

I just never see the WSJTX software setting the
split frequency.

Thank you for helping.

I have set K3 to split, the TX arrow points down.
I have set WSJTX for Split in the configuration check box.
I have no controller, WSJTX talks to K3 directly

WSJTX cat control gets and sets frequency correclty on main vfo.

but I don't see anything happening on VFO B frequency when I select

Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB generation

2014-05-11 Thread Larry Lopez
The 15 K Hz signal from the DSP is a SSB signal.
This is the second IF frequency (from the antenna side).

When this is mixed with the 8.230 Mhz in you
end up with the sum and difference with the 15KHz:

Namely 8.215 and 8.245 MHz.

The 8.215 MHz filter is used to remove the
unwanted 8.245 MHz component
leaving the desired first IF frequency

K1LI [via Elecraft] wrote:
 Thanks for writing, Lyle.

I am curious, then, why the (K3) SSB signal is routed through a
crystal filter. Is it purely a belt and suspenders approach to
enforcing a limit on the bandwidth of the transmitted signal?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB generation

2014-05-11 Thread Larry Lopez
The schematics show two internal crystal filters:

one on the receive path (2 poles) K3 RF Board
It's marked BW 14 kHz. 8215.0 KHz.
This has no relay to bypass it.

one on the transmit path (4 poles) KREF3 REF/2ND TX IF
It's marked 8215.0 kHz, BW=4 kHz
This has a relay to move to bypass it.

These seem to be in addition to the 5 user accessible
crystal filters.

So there seems to be large quantities of belts and suspenders.

[Elecraft] [K3] Hum JT65/JT9 and Vox. Resolved.

2014-05-11 Thread Larry Lopez
This is actually covered already but I need to mention it.

When the WSJTX waterfall started losing signals into the noise
I noticed that there was a neat periodic set of signals that
lined up with the frequency ticks. Eventually it dawned on me
that they were 120 Hz apart and eventually I found a 60 Hz
fundamental.

What I found is that the the line out was picking up the
linear power supply that was behind it.

What I also found out was that as the K3 got closer the
the transmitter came on.

So the magnetic field from the current spikes
from the diodes in the power supply were being picked
up line transformers in the K3.

So I moved the power supply.

Since the transformers get rid of ground loops I wouldn't complain too much.

End of Story.

PS it was really unnerving to move the K3 and have it turn on.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Hum JT65/JT9 and Vox. Resolved.

2014-05-11 Thread Larry Lopez
I was wildly optimistic in this.
A second source of hum is the switching supply
of the laptop.

It's similar to the power supply hum.
Even though it's clearly a switching supply.

Curiosly the laptop need 12 volts.
So perhaps I can pick that off of the linear
power supply.

Or maybe run everything off of a battery.

[Elecraft] Question about Elecraft K3 Utility for Linux Revision 1.14.4.11

2014-05-04 Thread Larry Lopez
I've uploaded the firmware using K3 Utility.
I want to save my configuration and nothing else
the log contains:

02:17:11 Elecraft K3 Utility for Linux Revision 1.14.4.11
02:17:11 K3 boot loader is waiting for MCU firmware load.

The firmware information section shows things like:
 Installed in K3 Available
MCU ??.?? 4.83

and on the Configuration tab everything is grayed out.
so I can't even save the configuration.

Why doesn't it show the MCU installed version ?
Why is the configuration tab grayed out.

Now I'm really going to bed.
Larry

PS: The hardest part was picking up the FT1000D. It's 51 pounds !!!
Of course the Astron 50 amp supply is pretty heavy too.

That means that Linux, the serial port and the cable are ok.
I checked the pin out of the cable.
It's a straight through cable like it's supposed to be.

I went to an XP system loaded K3 Util on it and tried there.
It continuously tries different baud rates and never stops.

I'll do some voltage measurements in a bit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Util not responding

2014-05-03 Thread Larry Lopez
I'm going to test the cable in the morning.
I have two cables neither which works.
The one which came with the rig seems to be a cross over cable.
The one I tested is an APC connection cable which just happens
to have continuity on pin 2.

I get or make a real cable tomorrow and see if that works.

[Elecraft] Are filters bought from Inrad the same as filters bought from Elecraft ?

2014-04-27 Thread Larry Lopez
This is for pure information purposes.
I don't even have a K3 yet.

I am under the impression that all of the
crystal filters that Elecraft sells except
for the 5 pole filters are made by Inrad.

I am also under the impression that all of the
5 pole filters are made by Elecraft in house.

Do I have that right ?

Does Elecraft test the incoming Inrad crystals ?

The only reason is last week I ordered a filter from Inrad
because they took Paypal and I realized that I didn't
know if there was a difference between an Inrad or an
Elecraft filter.

USPS ground is 5 days, not 5 business days.
USPS ground moves on the weekends.
UPS ground does not move on the weekends.

UPS drop off at Staples at 5:30PM Friday
doesn't get picked up until 5PM Monday

This isn't a criticism of anyone.
It's an explanation of what has been observed.

I look at it as allowing the transceiver
a short vacation before going to work.

  Hi everyone!
Sorry if i'm venting, but how come even the tiniest packages from

1 pound package via UPS Ground, for almost $17 shouldn't take this

Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?

2014-04-23 Thread Larry Lopez
And just for the record.

If you are going to optimize for bandpass shape
then you are going to have non constant group delay.

If you add more crystals you can have both and the
filters would be more expensive.

It's a compromise and we demand this compromise.

A phase linear filter looks bloody awful in terms
of bandpass shape. No sharp sides.

But these days the DSP can provide some of the
attenuation so perhaps a compromise can be made.

Which is why I like the 2.7 KHz 5 pole filter.

Some of the wider filters in that paper are pretty good.
The narrowest filters are not so good.
The flat part of the passband has constant group delay.
The skirts are awful

The printer in this comparison is the KPA500 and the two
computers are the K3 and the KX3.

It is not unreasonable IMHO to expect that a reset of the KPA500
 would be required.

If the KPA500 were simply an amplifier with no communications
capability with the driving transceiver, switching from one source of
RF input to another should proceed without regard to whatever is the
driving device, but your KPA500 is more than just an amplifier
because it can communicate with the K3 or KX3 driving transceiver.
Expecting the KPA500 to switch data streams from two different
transceivers with no intervening reset is not realistic.

Is this designed to work this way or is this a flaw in the design

[Elecraft] How to outfit a K3 for JT65HF or JT9

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
I'm note sure the title makes any sense.

Now I hate to admit this but I've had more
contacts in the last two month than in the last
ten years using JT65HF.

I'm using a FT-1000D with BPF on 20 and 10 meters
with a Cushcraft Vertical. I think I bought it when
Cushcraft was still in NH.

I'm thinking of buying a new base K3/10.

I'd prefer to by used but somehow the discounts
on the used equipment just aren't there.

But I expect for my application all I really need is already there.

Maybe a 8 pool roofing filter.

Any thoughts ?

With a 2.4 KHz filter (not on a K3) I only got partial band coverage on
JT65/JT9).

Is there any advantage to using a CW filter to look at a eq channels at
a time ?
Or is it better just to use the DSP to narrow it down ?

[Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
I'm wondering if any digital filters exist for the K3.
I'm wondering which common filters work best on the K3.

I'm interested in JT65 and JT9

linear phase delay and constant group delay
means that the signal of different frequency
take the same time to go through the filter
so that the waveform is preserved.

this is needed to get best results.
for narrow filters this is more serious
since the group delay changes are
at the skirts which are close together.

I've haven't been able to find such filter.

I've been using the filters on my FT1000D
and I do notice the 250 Hz one doesn't
seem to help JT65HF as much I would
have expected.

Any ideas,
Larry

Re: [Elecraft] How to outfit a K3 for JT65HF or JT9

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
But what about EME.

You want a narrow filter and you want constant group delay.
I'll research that as a separate topic.

Let's close this out.

In a pinch the 5 pole filter which comes with the rig is ok.

6K AM, 12K FM are recommended making up selectivity
in the DSP.

Narrow filters recommended when in filter band signals
are producing overload.

Narrow filters may degrade digital signals.

Signals near the skirts of filters may be degrade digital signals.

constant group delay filters are recommended.
I haven't found any.

Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
Thank you Jim,
I read all your posts.

I'll quote your quote of K1JT again here:

K1JT says that it is best to run the radio broadband and let the WSJT
software provide the needed selectivity in its decoding algorithm. The
reason is simple -- phase shift can cause decoding errors, filters in
the radio create phase shift.

73, Jim K9YC

But what about:

very weak signals reducing the bandwidth increases the signal to noise
ratio.
very strong signals reducing the bandwidth can prevent the DSP chain from
desensitizing the receiver and/or saturating the a/d converter.

Of course reducing the bandwidth tends to phase shift can cause decoding
errors.

Which is why I'm asking if there are any constant group delay filters out
there.

Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
Now with EME this isn't much of a problem I would think.

If no strong signals are present then the DSP wold be able
to shrink the bandwith just fine.

Even though a wide filter lets in a lot of noise
the DSP can get rid of it.

Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
This is wrong:

Even though a wide filter lets in a lot of noise
the DSP can get rid of it.

The WSJT software is a DSP.

It has it's own filters and the DSP on the K3
is not needed.

So the only job of the K3 is to produce a clean
wideband signal for the WSJT.

You would still have to prevent overload
by what ever means.

Re: [Elecraft] What crystal filters for the K3 are linear phase delay (constant group delay) ?

2014-04-21 Thread Larry Lopez
I've already recanted on S/N ratio.
I was an idiot.
I kept skipping the part where the PC is also a DSP.
Sven's post on the other thread also brought my attention to it.

The only thing left is strong carriers overloading the receiver.
I'll go find WSJT and learn some more.

Thanks again Jim.

Larry N2CS

Joe is well aware of the issue. Hiss answer that the phase distortion
issue trumps S/N ratio. You may want to study what he has had to say on
the issue. Joe reads the WSJT list.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - ATU Disabled Problem

2014-04-08 Thread Larry Lopez
I have no KX3, nor do I walk on water.
I just googled d = 000, ERR TxC, ERR TXS:
Out popped a reference to the KX3 Users Manual:

I searched the KX3 Users Manual manual says:

  ERR TXC,
  ERR TXS:

Transmit attempt without first calibrating TX BIAS in CW
  (TXC) or SSB (TXS) mode

Perform Transmit Bias calibration (pg. 33). This is a
fully-automated procedure that requires no test equipment

I would go to pg. 33 of the KX3 users Manual and Perform
and read the transmit Bias calibration.

I then search this list for transmit Bias calibration.
That was interesting. Quite a few posts.

I have no clue what is wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - ATU Disabled Problem

I wonder if this might be the problem !!!

There is a very interesting post with the title:

KX3 production firmware update, rev 0.97 -- very important bug fix, better
CW QSK, etc.

KX3 production firmware rev 0.97 (with DSP rev 0.84) is now available.
It corrects a problem in the power-on/off sequence that could
inadvertenly modify EEPROM locations (that is, operating parameters).
It has other significant improvements as well. See recent release
notes below.

...

* EEPROM DATA INTEGRITY IMPROVED: Previously, in rare cases one or
more EEPROM locations could be modified during power-on/off cycling.
Symptoms included “ERR TXC” or “ERR TXS” messages, AGC turned off, etc.

[Elecraft] K3 line in, line out transformers.

2014-04-08 Thread Larry Lopez
The K3 has isolation transformers for the line input (mono),
and line output L and line output R (stereo).

There are 3 sets of 2 transformers.

In each set, the circuit diagrams shows the transformers
in parallel with opposed phase.

Please see the K3 Circuit diagram KIO3 Main Sheet 2,
top left quadrant.

one of each pair is labeled TTC-108 600 ohm line transformer 1.5 KV
isolation,
the other of each pair is labeled LM-NP-1001 600 ohm line transformer, 6.5
KV isolation.

I'm going to take a stab at explaining this.
I bet only one transformer or the pair is actually used.

Re: [Elecraft] IF out to kx3 as panadapter for K3

2014-04-08 Thread Larry Lopez
The transverter IF out from the K3 is a transmit signal.
If you connected KX3 to the K3 transverter output
then the K3 would be transmitting into the KX3.
I wouldn't do that.

If you connected the KX3 to the K3 IF output
the KX3 would be transmitting into the K3 IF output.
I wouldn't do that.

You would probably need an attenuator
to reduce the strength of the K3 IF output
so that the KX3's front end didn't overload.

Enough attenuation might prevent
the K3 IF output from being damaged.
I still wouldn't do this.

Re: [Elecraft] Fw: Anti Static Mats

2014-04-06 Thread Larry Lopez
They made me take an ESD course
at work and well I have a few comments
I feel forced to make.

Forgive me.

static mats are poor conductors which allow the
charge to equalize slowly.

Humans, in fact are not poor conductors.

So the only purpose of the wrist strap
is to keep you at the same potential
as everything else.

But picking up a static sensitive device
is not safe. You are a good conductor.
You have much capacity.

Picking up a static sensitive device in a static
bag is ok, placing this on a static matt is ok.
After a bit you the bag and the static mat are
at the same potential so you can open the bag.

The only reason you have a large
value resistor on a wrist strap
is so you don't get electrocuted

So when you take a static sensitive device
and put it on a metal conductor (PC board)
you might have a fast enough discharge to
fry the board.

This subject goes on forever
and some of it is counter intuitive.

When you have a discharge
you might have failures months
or years later.

It may be damaged and it may work fine.
For a while.

I hate mentioning all of this but this is what they
taught us.

Larry

again forgive me.

[Elecraft] Why is KX3 phase noise so much less than the K3 ?

2014-04-02 Thread Larry Lopez
http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

The LO Noise (dBc/Hz):

144 KX3
138 K3
130 R390A
121 FT-1000D
117 ICOM 720A

I'm wondering why the KX3 Lo noise is so much better than the K3.
The R390A value strange since the first local oscillator is a quartz
crystal.

I've owned a Icom 720A and own a FT-1000D.
Ive never owned a K3, KX3 or a R390A.

Larry

I'll try to summarize:

lo phase noise is good:

it reduces unintended radiation from transmitters.
it reduces reciprocal mixing on receiving.
surveys during contests are very revealing.

The KX3 and K3 have similar very low amounts of phase noise.

Unless I want to make a career of it I should stop at this point.
Nothing is perfect.

thank you very much everyone.
