".I don't need any transverters and the K1 just seems

As an owner of a K1, K2 and KX1 I'd have to disagree. The K1 is a great rig
(not just a "little" rig) and it's fun to work on and work with. If you need
an extra challenge you could always build it for 160m!

Hope you all have a happy and healthy New Year!

Re: [Elecraft] K-1 vs KX-1

2005-06-02 Thread Lonnie Juli
Dave,

Here's one op's opinions.

I have them both and they're both great rigs. The K1 is more traditional and
makes a fine rig in the shack. The KX1 is better set up for portable and
field ops with its top mounted controls and attached paddle. If I had to
rank performance, I'd give the nod to the K1 for a slight advantage, but the
KX1 is more useful and flexible. It's a real toss up, but if I had to pick
one, I'd keep my KX1.

Here are some of the differences between the two:

 K1 KX1
Tuning Range Limited to ~80KHz of band full band

Tuning Speed Fixed three step sizes

Tuning Lock No Yes

RF Atten 1 step variable

Filters 3 set widths (200-850) variable (wide-narrow)

NBOption No

Speaker Yes No (need headphones)

Display LCD (NO backlight) LED (variable brightness)

Work LightNo Yes (inspired!)

Size Small Tiny (espionage size)

Cross ModeNo Yes (and really useful)

SWL coverage No Yes (better w/ 30m option)

GeeWhiz LotsMore

Whatever you decide, you'll have a great little radio. Do get the ATU. It
makes either radio much more convenient to use.

Good Luck es 72,

Re: [Elecraft] K1 paddle

2005-03-08 Thread Lonnie Juli
Bob,

There are quite a few small paddles. Some are made from binder clips or
plastic boxes and brass spacers while others are finely crafted instruments.
Since they are all small and lightweight, you usually end up with one hand
holding the paddle while you send with the other. Some do have magnets or
other attachments, but these never worked very well for me. The two I am
most fond of are the GHD GM701 "Travel Paddle" or the Palm Paddle. Both
units store well and retract for traveling. They are well made but have very
different tactile personalities. The GHD (I'm a big GHD fan) has a nice
positive mechanical feel, while the Palm has a smoother, almost silent
touch. I would recommend you check out the following website:

  http://www.morsex.com/

Marshall has a large selection of all sorts of keys and always has been
helpful when I asked for advice. (NB: I have no connection to this vendor
other than that of a very satisfied costumer.)

I know there are many ops who are just as happy with a piece of foil and a
thumbtack, but I seem to have a 'need' for the better made keys. It may take
you a while to figure out what works best for you.

Just to show you how personal these preferences are: I'm learning how to use
a bug now and I have a long way to go. I thought that I would never make it,
but the real truth was that I just wasn't comfortable with a Vibroplex. It
may be my arthritis or a bone in my head, but I just could not get the bug
to feel right until I tried a different brand. The non-Vibroplex bug works
wonderfully well for me, but it took quite a while for me to try an 'off'
brand.

So you may have to kiss a few frogs before you find a prince. Good Luck.

You can always get a heated discussion started here when you ask about keys
or headphones!

Re: [Elecraft] ECN/30 - Success!? (I think)

2005-02-24 Thread Lonnie Juli
Dan,

Nice Job!

I was happy to find you right on frequency and right at the top of the hour.
You were RST 439 here in Brooklyn but you were slow enough and gave enough
repeats that I was able to figure out what was going on just about all the
time.

It was fun to check into my first Elecraft-centric event. Ran at 10 watts
(about twice normal) and had better results than I hoped for. All the rigs I
heard sounded great. The receiver on the K2 blows my 'regular' xcvr away.
Now I'll have to rearrange the shack!

I'm usually not home until about 0130Z, but worked from home today and was
glad to be able to participate.

Keep up the good work and HOPE CU AGN.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 in ARRL CW DX contest

2005-02-21 Thread Lonnie Juli
Bob,

Glad to hear that you had fun. Picked up a few QSOs at 3w with the K1 on 40
and 80 using a Spiro trapped vertical wire. It's nice to know that some of
the hard core contesters actually listen carefully enough to hear the QRP
signals. I'm not really fast enough to mix it up with the big boys, but it
still always surprises me as to how well a battery operated, kit built rig
will perform. Got a few more contacts using my FT-847 at about 60 watts. The
Yaesu has more power, but much less receiver performance and the CW note
isn't as good. Compared to the K1 QSOs, the FT-847 contacts don't really
seem like much.

Good luck and 72,

Re: [Elecraft] Which Rig to Buy

2005-02-20 Thread Lonnie Juli
How about a K1 on 160 and 80 and a KX1 for 40, 30 and 20? You could always
pack another KFL1-2 for 17 and 15 if you wanted.

Lots of bands, great rigs and it'll all fit in one small case.

My K1 is set up for 80 and 40 now as I hardly ever have room for a 160
antenna but it's about the same. I Take the K2 when I have an easy trip, but
the small rigs all have padded Pelican cases and they go everywhere!

Both great rigs and the KX1 gives you SWL capability.

Build both!

[Elecraft] How about a K-RCV?

2005-01-30 Thread Lonnie Juli
Hello Elecrafters!

This seems to be a repeating theme for me.

How about Wayne and Eric design a full coverage (.5-30 Mhz) receiver based
upon the designs of the K2 and KX1. I know I'd want one (at least one).
What's even more interesting is that a bunch of techies I work with (many of
who are not hams) would want one, too.

The wider filter of the KX1 and its enhanced receive coverage have impressed
a bunch of folks. The exceptional control of the K2 is equally impressive.
And you get to build it yourself!

I don't know if I'm talking about one or two rigs here. Maybe a small
portable and a real base receiver are the answer.

I routinely scan catalogs and the web for SWL receivers and I'm almost
always disappointed by the lack of features or the high price. Heck, a used
(but restored) R 390A often sells for just under $2K! Surely, Elecraft can
do better than that and there won't be lubrication and transmission issues
to deal with.

That's my pitch and my plea.

What do you folks think?

Lonnie,

I see yo already have a good answer, but I thought I might point out that I
have added 160 meters to a 2 band K1 board for another ham - I can send you
the instructions and parts list if you would like to do something like that.

BTW, if you have the ATU in your K1, you will have to have an extra set of
ATU headers for the additional board.
