[Elecraft] continuous dahs

2012-01-19 Thread Lou Kolb
Check your rigs, folks. There's been a continuous string of dahs being sent
on aprox 7.026 since at least yesterday morning. It's s9 plus in
Northcentral Pennsylvania. I can't imagine it's deliberate but it's still
going strong a day later. I think K3 could handle that kind of abuse. 73,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Are the bands cleaner with all the K3s being used?

2012-01-13 Thread Lou Kolb
It really is amazing! I never payed much attention to it with the old
TS-440 but, since I've had the K3, its quite revealing to tune above the
signal and note the drop-off. The difference between rigs can be dramatic!

It's no secret, and this is nothing new, but K3s are really, really clean
 on cw.
As I saw for myself with my measurements on my K3 that I am doing for QSK
testing I don't see how the cw note on a K3 could be improved.
As a result, and with all the K3s being used by DXers, and DXpeditions
 have the bands
been cleaned up? Have you noticed, say on 160 meters in the recent
 contests,
that there is less QRM from clicky transmitters?
After Eric reported the Malpelo DXpedition using K3/KPA500 was active I
 listened
for them this morning. Good signals on 80 meters into NJ before sunrise.
If you want to hear a magnificent cw note listen to those guys. Tune just
 below
and above them and note how fast the cw drops off and nothing remains. No
clicks, no hiss. It's a beautiful thing.

Re: [Elecraft] Anybody Ever Used an Emmerson Microphone?

2012-01-02 Thread Lou Kolb
Mike,

Just the other day, I heard someone on the air talking about the ATR-30 and,
acording to them, it's been replaced by a mic with only minor differences.
I can't recall what the model number was exactly but it might've been the
3700 or something like that. So apparently, it's been dressed up and
renamed but is still around.

Awhile back, I went looking for the Audio Technica ATR30 microphone
which some on this list have used, only to find that they stopped
 producing that microphone last February.

My local Sears store is among those which will be closed, probably by
April or May of this year, as announced late last week.

This weekend, as my wife and I rambled through the store, I saw a
stack of Emerson dynamic microphones. I believe the model is M189.

These look to be your basic nothing fancy hand held vocal type
microphone, with the 3 pin XLR type connector. They are supplied with
an appropriate cable that has the XLR on one end, and a 1/4 inch male
 plug on the other.

The specs list the frequency response as 80 hz - 11 khz, with a 620
ohm impedance. My store has them for $8.95. I think the regular price
 is $13.95.

They are apparently made as extra microphones for a karaoki box that
 Emerson sells.

If you have used this microphone, please let me know what you think of
 it.

Subject: [Elecraft] Itching for a new rig

The first few years that I was licensed, I bought a new rig almost every
 year.
In the last ten years I have only bought two HF rigs. I sold the first
 one
 because, I didn't really like it and then I bought a K2 #6113 that I built
four years ago and it's now my main rig.

Lately I've been getting the new rig itch. I've compared all the rigs
 that
I'm interested in. They all have their strengths and weaknesses as far as
 the
type of operating that I do. I've looked at all the specs and downloaded
 as
much info as I can. I've even read some of the manuals as well as
 reviews.
I've watched as many Youtube videos as possible since some of the rigs I
 have
never seen or heard. I've made several visits to HRO. I know that this
 is an
Elecraft reflector and I do own a K2 as will as other Elecraft kits but,
 you
still have to check out the competition, right? ;-)

Now, over the last few years, I've been saving my money to buy a new rig.
 I
thought that this would be the year that I treat myself to a nice
 Christmas
present. Other than performance, I'm also considering, sound, ease of
 use,
quality of build, price, service and looks. When I say looks, I don't
 mean
ergonomics. I mean how it looks. I never really thought about looks
 before
until I saw several people mention it in reviews. I suppose that makes me
 an
HF rig fashion snob. So be it.

Anyway, I've narrowed my selection down to two or three rigs, one of them
being the K3. Now I have overloaded myself with so much information that
 I'm
like a deer caught in the headlights, not knowing which way to go. I keep
coming back to my K2 and thinking that I really can't get much better than
 that. It's a super rig.

I just had to post this to help clear my mind so, that I might be able to
 make
 a decision...or not.

 Thanks for listening,
 Gary, N7HTS

Re: [Elecraft] Heathkit Returns!

One of the reasons I delight in the rock-solid stability of today's gear --
the K3 in particular -- is that I had a Vf1 when I was a brand-new ham in

It's probably a little bit disingenuous to bash the late 50's Heathkit
products too hard. Generally, the stuff was a good value, worked (some
better than others of course), and was certainly no worse than most other
comparable products of the time. I had a friend who got a set of St.
James Grey gear as a 14th birthday present, but sadly, I was forced to
have my fun with the awful Heathkit stuff. And I did have fun, thank
 you ..

I wonder how many thousands of VF-1s were sold? Judging by their ready
availability still, I'd hazard it was the most common VFO of the era.
Most of us who built/used one managed not to attract the attention of OOs
or the FCC as a result :-)

In the 1950s, the Heathkit AT-1 and AR-3 were pure junk. Yes, the prices
were low, but the design quality was awful. The DX-20, DX-35 and DX-40
were just okay but the VF-1 was trash. The DX-100 and DX-100B were okay
 if
you were rock bound, but if you used the VFO - it was a VF-1 - and it
was terrible on CW and drifty on AM.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 abruptly shuts off during CW transmission

2011-08-14 Thread Lou Kolb
I'm having a similar problem with k3 4290. I have qrq mode turned on but
when I engage the RIT which turns QRQ mode off and then transmit, the rig
shuts down. It also comes back on a different frequency when I power it
back up. If I leave the RIT off, it doesn't happen. I thought it might be
firmware related and had been meaning to reinstall version 436. Then, 439
was released so I just upgraded to it figuring that might solve the problem
but no joy. I'm at a loss to explain this so any thoughts would be welcome.

After nearly two years of trouble free operation, I have developed a
repeatable problem. While transmitting on 40 meter CW on my usual antenna
the K3 suddenly shuts down. When I repower it, it comes back up fine, but
has shifted frequency by about 1.5 kHz. This is occuring during
 relatively
short transmissions. Power was at 100 watts and swr was about 1.5:1. I
tried turning power down to 75 watts and it repeated. I then switched to
 a
dummy load and it happens again; as I said it is definitely repeatable. I
even updated the firmware, no joy! Any thoughts. I operated cw mostly so
 I
can't say if this is also occuring on SSB.

Stan, there's nothing like setting a good example. I was raised to
understand that respect for the rules of our land is respect for our
country. That is still my guiding principle.

I, too (being old enough to remember laughing about the Geritol Set
 before
becoming a member), continue to use prosigns exactly as the operating
 guides
set them forth. I don't use them all, but commonly use SK at the end of my
last transmission of an exchange with another station, KN if I don't want
other calls breaking in (rarely used, but I do when the other signal is
marginal or when we're exchanging important information), of course always
DE between calls, and CL if I'm pulling the big switch and won't be
 listening for other calls.

After a CQ I also tune up and down at least 1 kHz for calls. Some folks
don't zero beat well, and there are still some xtal-controlled rigs out
there - often QRP in the hands of a very interesting operator I'll enjoy
 chewing the rag with.

I try hard to be charitable with those who use prosigns incorrectly but,
regarding DE or this is, I will admit to a *very* curmudgeonly gut
reaction (close to 'up-chucking') when I hear someone on phone reverse the
proper order of call signs and say, This is K6AAA standing by for W1BBB.

 In a word, AARGH!

I get exactly that same benefit from using a keyboard keyer. Exposure to
good code, I think, really does breed better sending. If you're a good
enough typist, you can, as has been mentioned, just let the buffer fill,
(200 characters in my case) and just enjoy the music of Morse. Lou --

I'm too new to this to know much, but it seems to me that one might best
learn to send Morse well by copying a lot of well sent Morse. I only
say this because I listened to computer generated Morse for months
before I got on the air. When I finally did send, I got compliments
right away on my fist. All I was doing, though, is sending the same
rhythm I'd been hearing for months.

If this was already said, then I apologize for the redundant repetition :)

real improvement on the already great QSK.
There are some limitations, it's disabled when split or RIT/XIT is on
but in the latest firmware this is handled seamlessly (i.e QRQ is used

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 #7150 is born; and the third time's a charm

In nineteen seventy something, I passed a ham radio exam for the first
time. I never got a station put together, and so never got on the air.

In nineteen eighty something, I passed the test again. But once again I
didn't get a station and never got on the air.

This time, I built the station _first_, then got licensed. About a
month ago I finished K2 #7150, with the aid of great instructions,
Elecraft's fine support, the archive of this mailing list, and all of
your generous help. Oh, and the Optivisor. I spent weeks wearing the
 Optivisor.

Saturday, dad and I each passed both the technician and general exams.
Our callsigns have just been assigned (they're even sequential).

I'm going to drop by the ham store on the way home and pick up a log
book. I know I'm not required to log my contacts, but having dad's
callsign as my first log entry... how can I not do that?

This has been a long time coming. Thanks for all of your help in making
 it happen.

Re: [Elecraft] D 104

2011-06-04 Thread Lou Kolb
You'd also be well advised, if its an unamplified D-104, to add one of the
op-amp matching circuits which can be powered from the K3. It'll make the
D-104 look into the 10 megohms or so that it likes and it will sound much
more natural. a Quic google search should yield a few of these circuits.

[Elecraft] k3 shutting down

2011-06-01 Thread Lou Kolb
A week or so ago someone posted their experience with the K3 shutting down
upon key-up. I responded that I had had similar experiences but since then
I've noticed something strange. Just about every time this happens, the rig
is in QRQ mode with the RIT engaged which, on the latest revision, shuts off
QRQ. If I leave the RIT off and QRQ on, it works fine. I can't figure why
this should possibly shut down the rig but that's what is happening. Any
suggestions will be greatly apreciated. lou

This is a great suggestion. Once you have the 100 watt amp that is meant

I would add the Elecraft amplifier designed for the K3 to upgrade to a
K3/100. There aren't a lot of choices for amps that are designed for 10
watts in. You could go with any linear designed for higher power and just
get less out driving with 10 watts.

I think Lee was asking for one stateful button. Press it once, it goes
to
the first stop. Press it again, it goes to the next stop. Maybe
 after
three or four stops it cycles around.

I am thinking of some sort of mechanism that allows successive button
presses to navigate through user-programmed sequences of settings:

 14005, CW width 800, then
 14025, CW, width 400, then
 14070, RTTY, width 250,
 14195, USB, width 2400,
 14250, USB etc.

It sounds good, but for a setting that isn't clearly on the front panel
 LCD
display, I think you'd probably forget where you were, so you'd end up
always pushing the one button a number of times

You can now assign different K3 switches for different macros that have no
state. That uses up the limited supply of buttons pretty quickly, though.

You can create a macro for each power level, and assign it to a button. I
have one that sets the power at 45 watts for use with the amp (buttton
 M4),
and another to set it to 100 watts (button M1) when I don't use the amp.
 And
then there is the tune setting.

The K3 utility has a very fine help file on creating the macros, and
 assigning to buttons.

As the old pasta sauce ad used to say It's in there!

One great thing about the K3 is that almost any good dynamic mic, and
any unbalanced electret mic, will work VERY WELL with the K3. All it
takes is wiring the right pin from the mic to the right pin at the K3
input, turning on bias if the mic needs it, choosing the right setting
for gain (Hi or Lo in the setup menu), and tweaking TXEQ for the mic and
 your voice.

For a desk mic, I would strongly recommend any of the EV RE-series mics,
 including the RE10, RE11, RE15, RE16, RE18, RE20, and RE27. The lower
numbered mic types are less expensive, but for our purposes, all are
equivalent. These are dynamic pro mics. They don't need bias. These mics
do NOT have a PTT switch, nor do they come with a stand. You'll need to
buy a stand from an audio supply house like Sweetwater or Full Compass,
and you'll need to use VOX or a foot switch. See the Ham Interfacing pdf
on my website for wiring instructions (simple).

The Shure communications-style desk mics are also excellent, and they
cost a lot less than Heils. They have an integrated desktop stand with a
 PTT switch.

If you want a headset mic, the Yamaha CM500 is the clear winner.

Re: [Elecraft] What made you decide on purchasing an Elecrafttransceiver?

2011-02-27 Thread Lou Kolb
As a ham who is totally blind, I must confess, I was a bit leery of buying a
K3. After all, there are certainly more accessible rigs out there,
especially the Kenwood TS480 and 590. The voice chip in those rigs speaks
not only frequency and S-meter but all the menu items and their status as
well.

However, a good friend of mine, Bob, K3Ul who is also blind and a first-rate
DX-op to boot had a K3 and liked it so much he bought a second one to use as
a spare. That, plus the fact that I had heard of Elecraft's intention to
make voice readout available via the DVR tipped the scales in Elecraft's
favor and I took the plunge last May.

Performance wise, I have no complaints. Though neither contester nor
DX-chaser, I love CW and work about 50 per cent cw and 50 per cent SSB.
With direct frequency entry and most of the everyday operations available on
the front panel, I've done well enough, but remain frustrated at the lack of
access to the menus. Elecraft has provided some help via K3 voice, a
program which gives access to S-meter readings, frequency readout and
several other useful items but no menu. Also, they used an odd aproach by
making K3 voice a self-voicing program where all the output is done by means
of recorded announcements. Perhaps there were reasons I'm not aware of for
doing this but it unnecessarily complicates things as those of us who are
blind use screen reading software. If output is properly displayed on the
screen, the screen reader speaks the information eliminating the need for
someone to record any possible output.

I believe the fact that Elecraft has given us K3 Voice demonstrates their
willingness to provide solutions to those of us who are blind or visually
impaired. I also apreciate that we are a tiny per centage of their customer
base and that they need to spend most of their time and resources doing
what's best for business and catering to the 99 per cent of their users who
are sighted. Understandable, but frustrating to those of us who need access
and are not willing to compromise on performance. I know of at least one
blind op who was very high on Elecraft and whom, I believe, was actually in
consultation with them on these issues. However, after several of his
correspondences to them went unanswered, he tired of waiting, sold his K3
and bought a 590 instead. K3UL, whom I mentioned above, also bought a 590
and, while he still has and loves his K3's, is delighted with the access the
Kenwood voice chip provides. Most of us, myself included, are in a position
to have only one rig. So here is my suggestion. Any programmers out there
who might be willing to work on a speech-friendly program that would give
access to the K3's menus? How about it guys and gals? Up for a challenge?
Thanks for your consideration. Lou WA3MIX

Elecraft is on vacation so here's something to try in the mean time:
Does it happen with all filters, if you have more than one quartz crystal
 filter?
What are your filter center and bandwidth settings for the filters it
 happens on?
Have you performed the filter offset calibration from Appendix A?

[Elecraft] unusual problem

2010-12-11 Thread Lou Kolb
Recently, I started noticing a strange sound from my K3-4290. When keying
the rig on CW I'll hear a crackling or almost a gurgling sound coming from
the radio itself. It's only happened 2 or at most 3 times but this morning
I smelled something for the first time. It started happening right after I
upgraded the firmware although I doubt there's a connection. I'm guessing a

Sam,

Not sure which accessory is the KXV3a. I do have the internal tuner and a
G5RV and a tribander hooked to the A and B antenna jacks. I have no amp
and use the G5RV most of the time. I should also mention that everytime
this has happened, it's been right after turning the rig on after it has
been sitting overnight in a chilly shack. It'll arc for a few seconds, only
while transmitting, and then settle down. So far, I haven't noticed any
other anomales in the operation of the rig. Lou WA3MIX

Do you have the KXV3A in your K3?
I had the KXV3A in mine and added an antenna to the RX ANT IN
Then I transmitted on another antenna.
Everything was fine when running 100w.
Then I turned on my Ameritron AL-811 amp.
When I transmitted I heard a sizzling sound,
 and smelled something burning.

It turns out my RX antenna was to close to my TX antenna.
The result was the GAP 1 melted the solder holding it.
It then dropped on the top of the relays on the KXVA3 board.
Since the GAP 1 is ceramic,
the heat from it melted the plastic case on the relays,
 causing the burnt electronics smell.

The rig continued to work, but the RX antenna no longer worked.
 Perhaps this is your problem?

[Elecraft] finally installed 4.22

2010-12-07 Thread Lou Kolb
Now that 4.22 is an official release, I loaded it into my K3 4290 tonight.
After having read so much about the APF I couldn't wait to try it. I must
admit, I was a bit concerned it wouldn't live up to the hype. I needn't
have worried. It's everything I'd hoped it would be. I had a Drake 2B with
the Q-multiplier back in the day and I think the K3 implementation is even
more effective. It's fun to tune in a heterodyne and then tune the APF
through the big fat peak just to get an idea of what it can do. Many thanks
and Kudos to the Elecraft team for a job well-done. This is one delighted
CW op. Lou WA3MIX

Re: [Elecraft] A few Questions on the K3

2010-12-04 Thread Lou Kolb
Jobst,

I have to say I've been amazed by the performance of the K3 internal tuner.
Since it's relay based, I expected it to be inferior to the tuner in my
TS-440 which is motor-driven. In fact, the inverse is true. It even tunes
half of the G5rV as a very short inverted-L on 160 which I couldn't even get
the Dentron super tuner to do. Lou WA3MIX

Subject: [Elecraft] A few Questions on the K3

I built a K2 a number of years ago while sailing (S/N #1442) and it served
me well as my only route for email to my family using Winlink and a pactor
modem. That K2 sits on the shelf at the moment (and may get sold shortly)
while I am using an Icom 703 Plus.

I operate Digital modes (mainly PSK) and stick to QRP so Elecraft
equipment has always been on the short list. I am now in the process of
working on the antenna side of the equation and plan on a vertical Moxon
(reversible) in addition to my 120 foot long wire (with an Icom AH-4
tuner) and a 33 foot vertical doublet fed with 450 ohm window line using a
4:1 Balun. Once the antenna issue is complete, I am seriously considering
 the upgrade to a K3

So - On to the questions:

 1) With a 4:1 Balun and the K3 tuner, will I have any issues (6 meters to
20 meters only) matching the vertical doublet (the Icom handles it OK)?

 2) How could I continue to use the Icom Tuner with the K3 on the random
wire (80 to 6 meters)? How do I initiate a tuning cycle that would send
10 watts to the AH4 in CW and then revert back to SSB for the PSK

 3) Can the K3 initiate a tuning cycle on the AH4 without using the
 internal tuner

 4) I plan to use the MFJ 4116 Bias injector to introduce 12 volts on the
coax leg that feeds the reversible Moxon (needed to run the relay that
reverses the antenna pattern)- will this create an issue with the K3

Any thoughts or experience is welcome

 Thanks in advance

For two radios that both feature an audio passband that is S
 adjustable
in so many ways and likewise so affected by button/menu switches, it's
almost criminal to put up a soundclip like that and call it a comparison.
The obvious (duh) protocol should be to first adjust the rigs and
 equalize
the passbands as closely as possible while observing the audio spectra,
 use
similar gain/agc settings, and then finally let 'er rip.

 Rich,

that was VERY well put. Even a dummy like me could understand that
clearly. I think as much as your idea of the Q being on the Width control
is a good one, I may actually rather put that Q setting in the Config
menu. I don't see adjusting the Q as often as I would the Frequency of
 the APF as you described.

One reason that the Shift knob is the best candidate is be because it
seems that just like when you put the Dual PB filter on, the Shift is
centered you are unable to adjust it, it will be the same with the APF on
(or at least this is my understanding at this point). So it really
 wouldn't make any difference regardless.
I much prefer to keep the Width control active, because I can see that
I'll probably end up using that APF on almost all of the time. In that
case I want to be able to still operate my Width at any given time without
turning on and off my APF to do so.
If it is the case where the Shift doesn't work when the APF is on, than it
would be nice if in the future the Shift would retain it's setting until
the operator turns off the APF and readjusts it.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] APF For K3

 Here is an operational scenario:

You are CQing in the CQ WW CW contest. There are other loud stations
CQing on either side of you. You have adjusted your SHIFT and WIDTH
controls to eliminate the adjacent-channel interference while still, you
hope, being wide enough to catch anyone calling you.

A weak station replies to your CQ, but he's some distance off your
frequency, although still within your bandpass. You'd like to be able to
put an audio peaking filter on his signal without affecting the rest of
 your setup.

You don't want to change your sidetone pitch; that's a separate question
for a separate discussion. You don't want to use RIT or CWT, because
that will bring one of the adjacent loud signals into your bandpass.
Anyway, the desired signal is too weak to trigger CWT. Likewise, you
 don't want to shift your main DSP filter bandpass (the context);
you've got this set up for where you are and you don't want to change it
just for this one 30-second QSO. If you didn't have an APF, you might
try narrowing the DSP filter bandwidth, but he's far enough
off-frequency that doing so would run the risk of losing his signal,
meaning you would have to fiddle with both SHIFT and WIDTH to home in on
him, and that takes time to do, plus more time to restore them after the
 QSO.

What you would really like to be able to do is to adjust an audio peak
filter's frequency so that it is on top of the received weak signal, but
without affecting the context (your DSP shift and width, your sidetone
pitch, or your transmit frequency - these should all stay where they
 were).

My suggestion would be to use one of the buttons (DUAL PB seems to be a
possible candidate here) to turn the APF feature on, and while the
feature is on, the SHIFT and WIDTH controls would adjust the APF
frequency and width (or Q) and would have no effect on the context
filtering. RIT and SPLIT would still work normally, it's just SHIFT and
WIDTH that would have been subverted to do the APF adjustments while the
APF is on. If you really did want to adjust the context filter width or
shift, you would have to turn APF back off to do so. Once the QSO with
the weak station had been successfully concluded, you could either turn
APF off, or else leave it on with its width adjusted to include the
entire context bandpass, and carry on CQing.

 My 2c worth.

 Rich VE3KI

Apparently not. Some with experience with other radio's implementation of
 an
APF function say that the currently available filtration offerings on the

As the link recently posted for Adam Farson's page on the Icom APF shows,
 an
APF can roll off the adjacent frequencies, rather than having a flat
pass-band, at whatever width. Like all audio enhancement, it's a rather
 subjective thing.

That sounds like arcing somewhere Mike (BTW, it's QRN - N - noise instead
 of
QRM -M for interference from other stations).

It could be a power line insulator. Sometimes a fluorescent bulb dying
sounds like that as the starter keeps re-engaging. I've heard that sort of
thing from some street lights that are flickering. Sodium lamps generally
create hash, but ordinary incandescent bulbs, in a street light or
 somewhere
in the house, can do exactly the same (their filaments sometimes fail but
are still touching and there is intermittent arcing across the opening).

Unfortunately the possibilities are as endless as the number of places
 there
 might be something arcing over.

How's the weather been? The advent of the rainy season sometimes causes
dirty power line insulators to arc. When it rains enough it may wash the
dirt off the insulator it may stop all by itself.

I'd tackle it like others have chased RFI here: start switching off
 circuits
throughout the house while listening. If it stops, you are in luck - it's
something under your control in the circuit you shut down.

If not, you'll need to start hunting with a portable radio. Follow the
strongest signal along the power lines. At that point you can start to
enlist the help of your power company. Cooperation varies a lot, but some
 are extremely helpful.

One time I was bedeviled with noise like that and couldn't track it down.
 It
was emanating from the general area of several blocks in the neighborhood.
Then, one night after dark, I noticed something while taking a walk. A
intermittent weak flashing on one of the power poles. And there it was - a
dirty insulator arcing over. The utility came out within a couple of days
and hosed down all the insulators in the neighborhood!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 beginners config setting?

2010-09-18 Thread Lou Kolb
I'm a fairly casual operator, more CW then SSB and Except for changing some
TX-EQ, I've stuck with the default settings. Aside from some occasional odd
AGC behavior, I've been quite happy with them. Lou WA3MIX

 The Elecraft K3 default settings!?!?

[Elecraft] K3 Sidetone

2010-09-17 Thread Lou Kolb
Susan,

I'm surprised you find the CW mode so noisy. I find that one of the best
things about the DSP in CW mode is that the more you narrow it, the more the
noise disappears. If the signal is strong enough, I can get rid of the
noise completely. Lou WA3MIX

entirely too noisy.

 Yes, it has been debated.
 But

I've gotten used to CW REV for audio higher = frequency
 higher. I *CAN* set
the radio so audio freq higher = RF frequency higher on
 CW. I have gotten
used to making sure that logging programs reset to CW REV,
 not CW, so I
don't constantly have to hit MODE ALT during a contest to
 return to audio
freq higher = RF freq higher. And YES I DO sometimes
 flip to CW, open up
the bandwidth and scan higher frequency to lower frequency
 so that new stuff
rolls in higher to lower audio, just to get away from the
 crowd that is
scanning low to high frequency using their CW USB.
 And yes, I still think
CW USB and CW LSB is a better label, and USB is really
 normal, and no, it
doesn't mean a thing to me that the K2 has a USB/LSB that
 flips on high
bands and IT has REV. A K2 is a K2, which is a
 wonderful compactness and
function with minimal parts. After all it only has15
 buttons. How much can
 one expect...

But I've gotten used to all the CW REV stuff.

But I've never gotten used to the K3's clunky, stop
 everything in a contest
and guess the right sidetone level while the RX audio is
 cut off sidetone
adjustment. It STILL bothers me and I have not found a way
 around it.
Actually it bothers me more now because so much other stuff
 has been fixed,
 added, adjusted so neatly.

I've never gotten used to it, and I really don't think
 Elecraft has this one
right. I'm not sure how to implement it, but I need
 to be able to adjust
the level while I'm transmitting, while sending CW, and I
 need to do both
MON and PITCH without turning off RX, and it really is a
 by-band adjustment.
I think an option CW MON ADJ:TX ONLY to go with CW MON
 ADJ:NOR would do it.
Currently hitting MON in TX **cuts off the RX
 audio**. That makes it
useless during a contest, because I have to find a space of
 time when I'm
not RX OR TX. Which means the current setup is
 strictly
 set-it-in-advance-and-live-with-it. I don't care
 whether NOR is something
I can't use. It's like CW REV. This MON adjustment
 clunker on the
irritating scale is more like CW with no way to do CW REV.

If one wanted to get crazy, you could just switch how it
 works based upon
whether the rig is in CW and has transmitted in the last
 second.

Can we please get this one on the list? Every time I
 have to come to a
complete halt to adjust sidetone level, its just like the
 faucet dripping in
 the sink at night.

I think that the reason it is done this way and no joy yet,
 is because Wayne
is using code wrapped around the PITCH function code to do
 both that and
MON, and will have to code the blend to make it happen like
 an analog radio,
 one of these simple-to-say-dickens-to-code things.

 probably get used to the
push/hold step if the tone was only present when I

steady tone will probably drive me crazy along with
 Steve. Identifying the
best level for given band conditions (full qsk of
 course) is best done
while sending. With lots of band noise, I need a
 higher level of sidetone
but with quiet condx, I tend to want a lower
level. It would be nice if I
could magically remove the compression function and
 replace it with
  sidetone
level (but no tone if key up). I would then
leave that knob set to the
sidetone level state except when I need to change
 power.

[Elecraft] direct frequency entry

2010-09-06 Thread Lou Kolb
As a blind k3 op, direct frequency entry is essential to me.

Most of the time, entering to the khz is fine for what I do but there are
occasions, like setting up 60 meter frequencies in memory, when I'd like to
be able to punch in the last 2 digits as well. the default seems to allow
me to enter only to the khz. Any way to change this? 73, Lou WA3MIX

Re: [Elecraft] Big Box K-3

2010-08-09 Thread Lou Kolb
I certainly agree on the keyboard port. I'm currently using a k1el k40
external keyer with a keyboard because I'm a better typist than iambist to
coin a term. It works fine but I'd love to just be able to plug the
keyboard right into the rig and use that fine internal keyer. Lou --

Subject: [Elecraft] Big Box K-3

Im not asking for a K4. Im looking for a K3A upgrade. A larger case I can
put the guts of my K3 in with a larger face(bigger screen and more
 buttons).
This is not a completely new radio but a OPTIONAL upgrade to the K3 for
those that want it. I understand a lot of people are happy with the size
 of
their K3. Great they wouldn't want the K3A upgrade. I how ever would. I
think a P3 built into the K3A face would be GREAT! Maybe the option to
 house
either power supply OR amp! With the exception of the case and faceplate
buttons and screen and power supply these are off the shelf parts. P3 is
already in production and the KPA500 is rumored to drop this winter. I
 would
also like a keyboard port. I want to be able to type PSK31 and RTTY with
 out
an external PC. Imagine that! 500w RTTY in one box! Yes it would be heavy
and some people wouldn't like it. Others would. Again Im not asking for a
whole new radio. All that i'm asking for requires little development by
elecraft, more repackaging. In the end would result in a top shelf KILLER.

In closing the Elecraft K3 is GREAT! I am the VERY proud owner of K3
#4455(great number!). the K3 has exceeded almost every expectation I had
 for
a kit radio. That doesn't mean it couldn't be even better. I think yes. I
personally would like a larger desktop K3(a). I would like the be able
 to
perform this fictonal upgrade on the K3 components I have now. It you dont
want or need these upgrades... Don't order or install them. This is a
 challenge to Eric and Wayne.
