[Elecraft] Knob covers
Sorry for the delay fellows.. Dayton!! And recovery!! I'll get back to all those requesting JPGs of the K3 main tuning knob with covers shortly. Lots of interest. 73, lynn W4NL __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Our beloved knobs
An idea which is not expensive, but very nice. I like my radio tuning knob to feel soft, warm and the key to the world. Well, I discovered Ten-Tec has a soft rubber ring which slides over the K3 knob in 10 seconds and nothing needs to be done to the K3 knob. These soft rubber knob covers come in Orange, Red, light Blue, Charcoal, and Black. To each his own, but I like the feel very much. I believe they have them on their webpage, so google Ten-Tec if you are interested. They may have some at Dayton too.. don't know. I can send a picture of mine to anyone off line if interested. I don't work for Ten-Tec, but I do lean toward Elecraft and Ten-Tec since they are two of the main companies for our toys and they are run by first class Hams who listen to us in the bushes. [Elecraft] I'm glad!
I'm glad to have both the K3 and Orion, not to be tacky. Orion for weak CW DXing and the K3 for all the digital modes with MixW, 6 meters and back-up. SSB, what little I do is a split. The K2 for QRP DXing is a keeper for the past 8+ years. The FT-450 is an outstanding rig too. BTW, some other fine rigs have only UCW and I like LCW far far better. I never saw or used a rig I didn't like relative to at least one or two features over others. The Orion and K3 could use a good DMU, right? hi. I'd buy one for each in a heart beat. 73, lynn W4NL - Original Message - From: Doug k...@comcast.net To: 'Steve Ellington' n...@carolina.rr.com; 'Gary Hinson' g...@isect.com; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, April 19, 2009 10:31 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 #2887 - first impressions And miss band stacking registers as well. Also I would add that a picture showing the sub assembly in expanded (blow-out)form would be nice. I am pretty sharp most of the time but I sat looking at both shells wondering what the hell I was supposed to do with them because I only ever saw one in the pictures. Having assembled a KX1 with options in the past I was worried that I would get the K3 3/4 assembled just to have to tear 1/2 of it back down to install something that could have been done earlier. Kudos to Elecraft for option breakouts in the manual preventing this from happening. More clarity on the J92 setup on the sub assembly would be nice. I hooked the aux RF port up and taped the tmp connector as instructed. Then it was never referenced again. Then you get to the sub rec assembly and it has j92 connecting to J63 on the KAT3. Left me wondering what the hell to do. In the end both got disconnected and taped up as I am not setup with two antennas at the moment and will just use the main for input for the time being. A Matrix up-front in the K3 assembly instructions showing the 3 options might not be a bad thing. What a bad ass little radio. Coming from an Orion II this is a real treat. K3 #2887 lives! Config: K3/100, ATU, subRX, 250Hz + 400Hz filters (main and subRX), KXV3, DVR. The kit build was relatively painless, certainly easier than the K2. Package open to 1st QSO took me 1 fairly intense but enjoyable day (Wednesday just gone). While they are still fresh in my mind, these were the most significant problems I experienced with the build: 1. If I had realized I would need them, I would have bought the antistatic wrist-strap and desk pad between ordering the kit and it arriving in the post, instead of having to go shopping after opening the box! Perhaps a little reminder about which tools customers will need could be included in the Thanks for ordering your K3 email? [Maybe it was and I missed it in the excitement!]. Alternatively, could these be another option to buy from Elecraft? 2. It wasn't immediately obvious that most boards/options come with their own hardware in little envelopes, and several bits took a little while to find (e.g. the bits for the standoffs near the display, fig 37 in the kit assembly manual). I eventually got the hang of it but having a bunch of spare bits left over and constantly changing from bag to bag got me a bit confused at times. 3. It's not entirely clear what the display light blocker strips are meant to achieve, hence exactly where they should be fitted - should they stick to the main board, the edge of the display panel, or the strip of flexy foil sticking out of the LCD panel? The manual, even with a photo, didn't help. The finished K3 looks fine now so I guess I made the right choices by luck. 4. My LCD panel had some smudge marks. I very carefully and gently cleaned it as best I could with a cleaning cloth used for spectacles, and the few marks that remained are invisible now under the Perspex face ... But I wonder if perhaps it ought to have been shipped with a pull-off plastic

[Elecraft] The QRP Challenge!
I have enjoyed very much all the comments on the subject of QRP and the rigs (Wayne mentioned), K1s, K2s, K3s. etc. There are others of course and bet many started with that 6L6 and thought it was the most powerful station on earth. Many of us old timers are reliving and with the good receivers now days like Elecraft, Ten-Tec and others we are truly able to enjoy lower power more, because the distant stations can hear us better. A challenge is good in anything we undertake and create a spirit of mission. QRP is obviously a challenge for better antennas, better coax, more skilled operating, better tennis balls to get it over that limb or more donuts. There is something for everyone in Ham Radio and the fellowship is a wonderful part. This reflector is a large positive to this end. Now I'll be quiet and crawl back up the headphones and play QRP with my K2 knowing the K3 and Orion is near by. 73, lynn W4NL __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Many things come into play with that 1/4 turn after tight rule with fasteners. It depends upon the compressibility of the materials, the length and material used for the screw or bolt, and the pitch of the threads. On a K3 (or anything else like that), I never tighten a screw so it moves visibly after it first starts resisting turning. When it stops I give it a little torque to be sure it has really reached bottom, but never enough to force it to move after the resistance to turning appears. A good test is whether it's easy to remove the screws without the damaging the heads. If not, they are too tight. [Elecraft] Ranking Rigs
I think to rank rigs for any one person the operating style or what are the most important goals are necessary to consider. This isn't a weird thought, but often overlooked. One friend adds to this does it feel good? Good point. My main interest is CW with SSB decreasing as time moves on, but the digital modes increasing in interest. Once it was about contesting, both phone and CW. Interest changes and where MOMT/MOST was the thing years ago it's more single bands now and with lower power. DXing has been and still is my main interest and particular weak signal DX. remembering the sun doing it's thing or not doing it's thing, hi. So I'll give an example from my prospective and the technology is time related as we all know even in the near term. 1-10 with 10 the top. BTW, reliability is always high on any of my lists. Service is important and Ten-Tec/Elecraft are the best in my opinion. Recall everything breaks in time! IC-765 = 7.5 IC-756II = 6 or perhaps a 5. I hear ProIIIs are much higher from folks I trust. FT-1 = 7.5 a few years back, but a great rig. FT-1000MP = 8 FT-1000D = 7.5 FT-950 = 7.5 Omni VI+ = 8.5 Omni V = 6 TS-480 = 7 Orion I = 9 (Latest version) Super radio Orion II = 9 Omni VII = 8.5 K2 = 8.5 K3 = 9.5 The K3 is super sitting beside the Orion. Congrats to Elecraft. Finally, I truly believe our country has the best and innovative technology and not slamming other countries. I'm biased, but take a look at the numbers above.. who makes them? [Elecraft] K3 and the digital modes
Thanks, For the many who responded to my question on hook-up for the K3 using the digital modes, THANKS. It works with MixW using the two cables from the in/out of the K3 to the mic/speaker on the computer along with a serial cable for rig control. Once I figured out that 'line in' had a gain control automatically selected when 'main/mic sel' was in the 'line in' position! It's where we normally adjust the mic gain control. Neat. I placed this in PF-1 memory which makes it easily to select when moving back and forth from digital to CW/SSB. And using the K3 at about 2.5 watts into a THP SS amp at 10/12 watts on the digital modes, everything runs very cool. It's a learning process but with good help here on the reflector, it was possible and again thanks for the thoughtful help. [Elecraft] K3 and the digital modes
Pardon for a dumb question, but I've hit that wall... again! I talked to Dale at Elecraft and he suggested some of you may know the answer as he had no experience with hooking up and making K3 work with a computer so it will work using the sound card to have a full array of modes, etc. Guess I misunderstood how the K3 did this and purchased the serial to USB cable at the time the K3 was ordered and it does the trick relative to downloading the firmware and very well. I expected this same cable to give me all the audio in and out plus key the rig. It doesn't at this QTH and Dale suggested I use a serial to serial cable which I tried and it doesn't work either. So that is where I'm at tonight.. dead in the water, hi. Has anyone done this and if so PLEASE share it with me? If I'm missing something I should know please tell me too -- I can handle it, but I've got the book memorized! I use MixW and FLdigi on other rigs and they work fine, but the K3 is where I'd like to do the digital modes. The K3 has about 10-15 dB more IMD dynamic range ([EMAIL PROTECTED] for MP/Inrad 5k roofing filter vs 102/[EMAIL PROTECTED] for K3/500or400) than an Inrad MP which will more than cover the 8 dB difference (18-10) in attenuators. [Elecraft] Knobs!!
K3 and K2 Knobs. Several years ago someone told me about a Yaesu rubber covered knob which would be a plus for my beloved K2 main tuning. Don't remember which Yaesu knob, but could find out if anyone is interested. Anyway, after $16 it was on the K2 and I've always been happy with it. I like the K3 main knob better than the original K2 knob, but silly as it may appear, with a super rig like the K3, I wish it were softer. Don't laugh! A rubber cover on B would be nice also. I pulled one of the Orion's main knobs off and placed it on the K3. Nice. Larger and an okay feel. Ten-Tec only recently has a new softer rubber cover for the knobs used on the two main knobs for the Orions and perhaps other equipment, don't know. And in color, glory be! The original knob is back on the K3 and it may stay unless I can obtain another Orion knob. But I'm open to anything and the jury is out. Told you this was silly since the K3 will not be more outstanding with a gold plated knob nor is the Orion a better rig with a large soft rubber knob. But boys will play silly games, won't we? OR is it a game? A game to want our toys, especially the K3 toy's main point of contact (the one we will touch, fondle and caress for years to come!), to have as good a feel as possible? I'm not rich, but would find a way to have the BEST darn rubber covered knob on the planet. [Elecraft] K3 Feedback
The exchange here on the reflector is enjoyable and very much a good source of information. I have no answers for the feedback problem with the K3 but let me offer my situation. There is feedback in my audio using the NCS Switcher and I have discussed it with Doug of NCS. There is no feedback using 5 other rigs.. the Orion, FT-950, K2, Omni VII, and TS-480. There is no feedback when using a mic directly in the front of the K3.. works great. I've not tried the rear mic connection at all. The power supply has nothing hooked up to it but the K3. It's an Astron 25 amp switching supply. Many things I've tried.. the normal things mentioned here on the 'net'. Nothing helped. Elecraft has my K3 now looking into this problem, calibrating and changing the 2.7 filter with a 2.8. I noted the 2.7 was not an enclosed filter and the 2.8 ...or the other 8 pole filters I installed are enclosed. I've ask it be replaced with the 2.8. Will it help the feedback problem (?), I don't have a clue, but it can't hurt. I feel Elecraft will find the problem soon. Any group of folks who could design and build a box of 8.5 lbs of this caliber can find and fix this problem. No question. Thanks for all the ideas and may I say there IS comfort in numbers relative to this issue, hi. 73, lynn W4NL www.SEDCO.Homestead.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
