Re: [Elecraft] 43 ft Vertical

2010-06-07 Thread Mark, KJ7BS
It is an antenna and a good one, but it is not half of a dipole, it is
a whole dipole. It does not matter where a dipole is fed, it is still
a half wave long.

I beg to differ. A dipole is an antenna with two elements fed at the same
location. A half wave end fed is only one element that is a half wave long.

Re: [Elecraft] HRD cw copy

2009-01-21 Thread Mark, KJ7BS
HRD does not decode Morse code. However, its sister product DM780 (Digital
Master 780) does decode Morse code. HRD is bundled with DM780 so you get it
with the download.

When you select the CW mode, the CW tones are decoded in the receive window.
There are some controls at the top of the receive window to help DM780 better
decode Morse code.

I've run a side by side test of DM780 and CWGet and I have to tell you, CWGet
does a much better job of decoding Morse code. I find DM780 best decodes
machine generated code and forget about a straight key, but it does better with
bug and keyer generated Morse code. The closer you get to perfectly sent Morse
code the better DM780 does in decoding it. CWGet does a much better job
decoding Morse code, even from a straight key and it has a better tuning
indicator, too.

The software to properly decode CW cannot be trivial. Don't get me wrong, I
think HRD/DM780 is the best one stop solution for logging, rig control,
digital work on the market today, and the price is right, FREE, but the Morse
code decoding needs some work.

Simon has a real love for amateur radio to put so much time into a great
product.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 repair

2008-05-15 Thread Mark, KJ7BS
Ron's point about having a virtual network of support in this email reflector
is spot on. I like to say Elecraft took the Open Source concept and applied it
to their product support. There are thousands of Elecraft rigs in operation
and with them a high number of technically savy owners who will offer
suggestions to repair your radios. There are, those who think they know thier
stuff but don't and offer suggestions, but the really technically savy ones
quickly set them on the straight path of truth and light.

The amazing thing I found out from using the email reflector for help support
is no one thinks less of you for needing help and asking for it.

That's a great post, Scott!

Elecraft personnel are not all in Aptos. That's the home office where the
kits and rigs are assembled, but engineers and support staff are scattered
over a large area that includes several states. We normally communicate with
each other via e-mail and telephone. For that reason, and to provide a
written record of your request, e-mail is the best way to get support. Send
a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (You'll likely get a reply from Gary

gear, having worked on them all daily for many years.)

I doubt if a single person didn't get led astray at some point or another by
someone they relied on who didn't know what they were talking about, or who
had a hidden agenda. I know I have.

In the decade I've owned Elecraft gear, I and almost countless others have
experienced almost absurdly-good and eager help with any question or
problem. It's an open question about which is better: Elecraft equipment or
Elecraft support. Any opinions about that will start a huge, never-ending
thread ;-)

Indeed, it was my experience with the company that encouraged me to get
involved with helping Wayne with the kit assembly manuals.

It underscores the need to ask the source when one wants a clear answer, and
sometimes it's worth asking twice if the answer wasn't clear the first time.

Hello

I would like to apologize if I ruffled some feathers over Elecrafts support.
I was told when I bought my first K2 that Elecraft did not work on them.
When I had a problem with it that I couldn't fix, I sold it and bought
another one. Well, I had the second one working beautifully for a month and
it started developing problems. So I was going to sell it on ebay and buy
the third one. As you can see, this was getting expensive. Now I am told
that Elecraft does repair them, so I canceled the Ebay add, and am sitting
here waiting for Elecraft support to return my call on getting this one
fixed. Sorry I was such a pain in the rear, but all I wanted was a working
K2. 73 Scott N5SM ___

Re: [Elecraft] Wow - disappointment with the KSB2 Kit

2008-03-07 Thread Mark, KJ7BS
Have you ever written installation or assembly instructions? Try it. It is
not easy. Writing styles between people are different and technical writing is
an art. I don't believe any two people do it the same way or with the same
precision and clarity.

I've been writing an assembly manual for a large model rocket kit and it has
taken me over 6 months and several revisions to date.

What the heck happened to the KSB2 kit? I am working on the Front Panel

As someone that is working on building a fully loaded K2 + transverters
and starting to look at the K3 as the next big toy the first steps of
the KSB2 have left me with sudden negative impression.

Doing a quick spot check of the rest of the KSB2 manual some sections
seem like they are very detailed and the next chunk of components lack
that same detail. What happened to the quality control on this?

Thanks, JH

Re: [Elecraft] Mojo

2007-12-14 Thread Mark, KJ7BS
Mojo? My K2 still has plenty of it! I am still amazed at the contacts I make
with it. Built in 1999, S/N 0539, is the stock (no mods), not revision B, 15w
capable QRP rig. It has never been in a SSB QSO, but does have the KSB2
module. I've toased finals twice and performs well at home, on the trail, or
in the travel trailer. My most memorable contact was to Antartica on 30 meters
running 3 watts to an inverted L while camping in Northcentral Arizona.

It took me a long time to get used to the superior RX of the K2, and for a
while I was so spoilled, I did not ever operate my Kenwood TS-850S/AT which
also has an excellent RX. These days, my K2 is my favorite contest rig and run
everything from milliwat to 300 watts (K2 driving an AL-811H). There are many
things I would like to change about my K2, but can hardly fathom the thought of
modifying my pristine K2.

Elecraft Forever! K2 Mojo, the real deal.

[Elecraft] Walk A Mile In Elecraft's Shoes First

2007-12-13 Thread Mark, KJ7BS
Elecraft is not keeping to their stated schedule ...

My K3 did not ship when I was told it would ...

Elecraft doing a bad job with the K3 project ...

Elecraft is not communicating status enough ...

PLEASE!

Until you have walked in Elecraft's shoes, keep your mouths shut. I dare say
most if not all the complainers have never run a small manufacturing business
and developew and released new products. I have, internationally, and I can
tell you it is no cake walk. There are so many things to worry about,
regulatory issues, shipping issues, supplier issues, personnel issues,
marketing issues, competitor issues, manufacturing issues, etc., etc., etc.
Elecraft is doing the very best it can given the circumstances.

How much time do you want Elecraft to spend communicating status to you?
Remember, every minute spend responding you complaints, shipping questions,
where am I on the list questions, etc. is a minute not spent doing what is
really important, building and shipping products. Those of you who want
manufacturing statuses, do you really want to know production was slow today
because Marybeth Sue called in sick today because her monthly cramps were so
bad she could not walk, or that Bubbajoe is out for 2 weeks to be with his wife
and new born baby, or that the toilet overflowed and destroyed the printed
assembly instructions and the printed business records?

Do you get consant hand-holding from Ford Motor Comany, Sony, DirecTV, Tyson
Foods, your bank, your local police? NO, but you do expect it from a much
smaller company like Elecraft. Elecraft, being a smaller company can focus
more of its attention on customer service in normal day-to-day business
activities. Elecraft's business activities are anything but normal. They are
dealing with ramp up, production, and distribution of the hottest transceiver
on the market, working on 800 and 1500 watt solid state no-tune amplifiers, and
other yet unknown projects.

So you sold your rigs in anticipation of taking delivery of your new K3. Did
Elecraft instruct you to do so? No. YOU sold it based on the information
provided you by Elecraft, based on the delivery schedule they calculated based
on all the information they had at the time from suppliers and regulators. It
is lame to try to blame Elecraft for a decision you made to sell your rigs,
afterall you made the decision.

Those of you planning on taking the K3 on a DXpedition should have had a plan
B. If not, I certinly would not be going on your DXpedtition.

Look at all the hastle given to Elecraft and ask yourselves why don't more
people put their reputations, finances, homes, families, and lives on the line
to start a small business?

If I have to tell you the answer, here's your sign.

Let Elecraft do what it does best, design, produce and distribute the finest
amateur radios in this niche hobby.

Almost.

The K3, as has been mentioned has a digital mode encode/decode feature
that lets you operate digital modes without a computer. One of the
things that you can do is send CW with the paddle and have the K3
convert it into RTTY or PSK for you. I recently had my first RTTY QSO
since 1982 this way!

When you do this, what you send scrolls by on the K3's display. If your
spelling or CW spacing is not so good, you can see it!
