If your PC has a open PCI slot there are high speed serial cards still
available. Think I paid $26 for the last one I purchased.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 delivery require signature?

2008-07-14 Thread Matt Patterson
You're right.. It doesn't have anything to do with the operation of a
K3 but it does have everything to do with receiving your K3 from
Elecraft and if you will be required to be there to accept delivery of
the package. Some of us still work and don't have the luxury of being
retired and home all day waiting for UPS to show up. I see people
posting stuff to this forum all the time that doesn't have anything to
do with the operation of a K3 and nothing every gets said about that
stuff.

I learned my lesson with this. I sold a TS-2000 and had it shipped
and insured via UPS. UPS delivers it and the guy isn't there so they
leave it on the front porch. His house just so happens to be
adjacent to a city bus stop! He gets home to find that the package
is no longer on his front porch like the tracking information online
says. UPS calls the driver and they confirm it was left on the
porch. I refund the money that I was paid for the stolen radio and 4
months later I finally get UPS to cut a check for the insurance. All
of this could have been prevented by requiring a signature which I
will do from now on. On high priced items it makes sense for the
shipper to require a signature.

chance that no one would be home when the UPS man arrives. Take my
situation as an example - the UPS man usually arrives around 12:30.
If the XYL and I have chosen to go out for lunch that day, I would
miss the delivery and it would be delayed until the next day. Yes,
we receive frequent UPS shipments, maybe an average of 3 per week.

Consider also the Samsonite L25 soft-side case. This is a small
version of a laptop case, and it fits the K2 perfectly. There is room
for the K2, a Kenwood MC-43 microphone, a Palm-Paddle, a small laptop
12V power supply to use as a battery charger, the K2 instruction
booklet, power cables, a folding headset, some basic antenna
materials, and a few other bits.

It has lots of zipper pouches to accommodate loose stuff. It also has
a pair of Velcro straps inside the main case that fit snugly over the
main K2 to keep it in place. Not bad for about $36 on Amazon.com. I
have used one of these cases for some time now. No damage to the K2
or any of it's accessories, ever.

Another advantage - it is about the size of a woman's purse (and it
has a carry strap), and so far I have successfully convinced airline
types that it should fit under the same rules that allow women to
carry a handbag and not have it charged against my baggage or carry-on
allowance. This is one time where "non-discrimination" rules work in
my favor!

Re: [Elecraft] Buddipole vs. tuner and wire

2008-05-13 Thread Matt Patterson
Brian,

Have you considered something like the YO-YO tenna?
www.hamradiofun.com/yoyodeluxe.html

They are very nice and compact dipole antenna and can be made to
resonant length by only spooling out the correct amount of wire that you
need for the particular band you want to work. Hoist it up in a coconut
tree as high as you can get it and I think you'd be better off then with
the buddipole at ground level.

Fact is we've all had our issues with one shipper or another. Mine is
with UPS. I'm going to two months now after filing a claim with UPS on
a package they left at the front door of the guys house which was then
stolen. The guys house is next to a transit bus stop! UPS just left it
anyway without getting a signature. So if you ever ship UPS be sure and
tell them that you want the signature to be required for delivery.

[Elecraft] K2: HI CUR warning

2008-03-30 Thread Matt Patterson

Hi,

I worked a little bit of the SSB contest this weekend. I noticed last
night I received the HI CUR warning a couple of times. The antenna is a
40m delta loop. I have checked the SWR and it never gets above 2:1 on
the entire band. I also use the internal ATU to get it down to 1:1 when
I'm transmitting. I am using a heil goldline with a HC5 cartridge for
the mic and the mic gain was set to 3. I have never had the HI CUR
warning occur while operating CW only in SSB. I looked up HI CUR in the
manual and it says that it's usually to do with the radio trying to
drive the finals at a higher output than what they are rated. I can
connect a dummy load and set the radio to 10 watts then hold down the
TUNE + DISPLAY buttons to put the radio in tune mode bypassing the ATU
and the radio is putting out the correct amount of power which leads me
to believe that the issue has something to do with the mic. Do you
think I have the mic gain set too high? I have since backed it down to 1
and it hasn't done it since but it wasn't doing it everytime when it was
set to 3 so I really don't know if that fixed it or not. Is there
anyone else who uses a Heil Goldline with their K2? Am I even going
down the right path troubleshooting wise? Or should I be looking at
something else?

first PSK31 contact on the K2 last night and the guy said I had a nice
clean signal but I'm curious what settings on the K2 everyone else uses
when running these modes. I'm afraid I may have my RF gain set to high
on the rig or my audio out set to high on the PC. On my TS-2000 you
would increase the volume until the ALC meter just barely started
registering then you knew you were good to go. Is there something
similar I can do on the K2?

[Elecraft] SignaLink USB and K2

2008-03-18 Thread Matt Patterson

Hi,

I have a Signalink USB and would like to use it with my K2 which has a
8pin mic connector and is wired up for a Kenwood mic. My question is,
do I just use the kenwood pinout for the SLUSB? Is anyone else using a
SLUSB with their K2? If so, how do you have your it jumpered?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: [Elecraft] Excellent External Speaker for K2

2008-03-17 Thread Matt Patterson
I just use a good ol' set of amplified PC speakers. Works great for
me... Or maybe I don't realize what I'm missing since it's the only
thing I've ever used?!?!?!!?

Hi Jim, I'm using a Kenwood SP-230 speaker with my K2. It also has
the audio filters and does a great job with the K2.

After replacing the phone jack on my K2, I have been searching for a
really
good external speaker. One that allows me to use my headphones and
mute the
speaker when doing so. Well, I had an old Kenwood SP-180 speaker
that I had
replaced a bad speaker in with a 4 ohm speaker designed for Collins.
This

particular equipment has audio filters and accepts a 1/4 inch stereo
headphone jack. I cleaned it up and it has been in line now for
over an
hour. The audio filters really help with CW in QRN and smooth out
really
strong signals that otherwise had a harsh note as they were tuned
across. P49V is on 40 meters and is about 40 over S9 and is smooth
as silk. The 1/4

inch headphone jack will help, too, as that is what is on the K3 I have
ordered (due in early July).

I just wanted to pass this along as one can find the old Kenwood
speakers

for nearly nothing online or at hamfests and they will help K2 audio.

[Elecraft] K2# 4778

2008-03-08 Thread Matt Patterson
Recently added the internal ATU, RS232 and battery kits to my K2.
Installed them today and she's back up and running just fine! I know
you're probably thinking, why post this and waste bandwidth. Well, I
have no one else to tell and I'm excited that all the additions worked
the first time around!

[Elecraft] K2: K1EL K40 Keyboard Keyer

2008-02-15 Thread Matt Patterson

Hi,

I'm was wondering if there was anyone on this reflector who uses the
K1EL K40 with their K2? I am having some difficulty getting mine to key
the K2 and was looking for some guidance. I know the K40 works as it
works fine with my other rigs but they all work with a mono cable and I
notice the K2 manual says a stereo cable is required for external keyers.
