How about being able to set the Programmable Function Buttons to change to
what ever band you like, but not making that permanent for those of us that
have other uses in mind.

I honestly have gotten well used to using MV then a number to change
bands and never use the BAND rocker. I'll have things that I'd like to
put on those PF's but my rig won't be using them as band switching
buttons. Honestly with two taps I can get a bands witch done in less
time than a tap and hold takes.

 Snip

But I still miss the Band Stacking Register because I like to separate
my favorite cw spots from voice, might it be possiable to have this
[MV] function remember two frequency's or more that might be controlled by
 [mode] first being selected?

P3 can also be powered from the K3 or from an alternate DC source if you

either follow the external 12V on/off from the K3 accessory power jack
or to use its own power switch button.

it is not very realistic from an organisational point of view, but
Elecraft has worked wonders in the past.

I would love to see an integration of three things in one single display:

 - The real time spectrum

 - Imposed upon it, DX-cluster spotting information

 - Bandmap, worked stations, multiplier, etc. information from the
logging software (Win-Test in my case), imposed upon both of the above.

Maybe sometime in the distant future, this could at least be partially
 implemented.

Also it might be cool to add an interface (Ethernet?) for providing
the spectrum information as semi-raw data and/or graphics to external
 devices.

You didn't say if you are using a PC or not With a PC, you can do
this by clicking on DX spots and use a program that recognizes QSX in
the spot. You might have to put out a spot to get them both on the screen.

Otherwise . With no PC, and probably a better way to do it
Put VFO A 14025, VFO B 14027, CW, set your filter for each VFO if
needed, SPLIT on and enter that into a memory location with MV and M1

Then put VFO A 14195, VFO B 14200, SSB, set your filter for each VFO if
needed, SPLIT on and enter that into M2 with MV

Now VM M1 and you are on the CW pileup
And VM M2 and you are on the SSB pileup

But . In the heat of switching back and forth you must be VERY
careful to use the VM button - do not miss and use the VM button
because you will end up losing one of the memories and have two memories
 the same.

There is no safeguard on VM . That is supposedly on the list to
have a double tap of the VM before it writes to the memory location,
but there are too many other things ahead of it, I guess.

Read before answering because I do know how to change bands
and modes, but not in the fashion I would like to.

  Example: single receiver.

  VFO A = 14025 Split with VFO B 14027

I wish to go to another DX pileup on SSB

  VFO A= 14.195 split with VFO B = 14200

And switch back and forth to monitor/ call either
  freq to work the DX.

How can this be done simply to swap between those two modes
  and freq sets?
If I use the Band button I can go between bands to monitor
a pile up on another band, how do you do this on one band?
Also needs to remember the freq you are using, IE: if you
tuned the split to 14205, and switch to CW, when you come
back to SSB needs to be the last freq you used.

This is easy peaszy on all my other radios using band stacking,
its just a press of the 14mhz band button, once for the CW
and once for SSB, and they remember the last tuned freq.
Seems I am missing something easy here on the K3?

Try that with a 1100 watt radio on 2.450GHz inside a RF cage and
you've made a microwave.

Re: [Elecraft] SMT Possible K1 Filter Board Combinations

2007-05-23 Thread Michael B

I just finished building my K1 and haven't gotten to use it because I have

to learn code. What if you were to go all DSP and DDS, you could put in even
Higher bands ie 6 meters, 2 meters, Maybe even 440. With that if you did
some modulating with the DSP you could do even differnt modes ie SSB, SSTV,
FSK, Digital, Packet, ect. (thats my theory at least)

Re: [Elecraft] Advice needed on stripping enameled wire

2007-05-09 Thread Michael B

So is there a better way or how do you do them?

I found that if you use a blob of solder with the biggest tip and you let
that blob go to the bottom of the soldering tip then just slowy move the
tip as you see small bubbles from at the edge of the soldering tip and add a
little more solder when you see it start to pull away from the tip. It
worked great on my K1 and made a smooth striping, the only problem I had
with the toroids were when I wound them wrong.
