Re: [Elecraft] K2 turning power behavior
G'day, If you whistle/speak into the mic you get no RF out ! OK I agree. Using PTT I can hear my carrier leak on an outboard RX. When I reduce requested power from 100W past the 10W transition there isn't any reduction in the signal level. Increasing the requested power past the 10W transition the carrier leak decreases and there is no modulation. Also there is no transition from Low to High on the KAT100 display as previously mentioned. Quirky but no big deal and certainly not an operational problem, particularly on CW where it would never be noticed because of the QSK. On SSB just drop the PTT and all is well with the world. Personally I'd be more interested in the A/B VFO switching remembering independent mode settings. Re: [Elecraft] K2 turning power behavior
G'day, At the salt mine so not near #1400 at present. How exactly do you determine that transmission has stopped? Does the receive unmute? On #1400 when I cross the QRP/QRO boundary level, in either direction, there isn't any unmuting and just for interest I set up as split and the TX frequency remained selected. I must confess that the one thing I didn't check for was modulation. I get the impression that the "feature" is subtle rather than gross. Will check again at the first opportunity. Re: [Elecraft] K2 turning power behavior
G'day, So...if i press the PTT (dot line on keyer when on USB) without talking (or maybe also with ssb modulation because i did not test it) and turn the power button on 100W and then reduce the power back to minimum my K2 stops transmitting.I must then release the PTT and press it again to go into TX mode. Is this happening with all K2's? Not on #1400 (external KPA100/KAT100 combo) unless I've read the above incorrectly. Re: [Elecraft] A minor C22 question
G'day, Not really an issue. Get C22 right with the cover off and right away do the "cal pll" before putting the cover on. After that it doesn't matter what happens when the cover is replaced 'cos it has no effect whatsoever on calibration. Regards, Mike VP8NO | The cover on vs. off naturally changes overall circuit capacitance as well | as temperature. [Elecraft] KNB2 and 10M Birdy
G'day, 1.Both birdies in #1400 are at the LF band edge of 10M one is from the K2 MCU clock the other is from the KPA100 processor clock. The latter can be put where you wish depending upon your priorities, no birdie at the top end of 75M or no birdie at the bottom end of 10M, take your pick. See KPA100 receiver tests, last point. 2.No birdie at 28020 3.KNB2 on #1400 works very well in my environment. Pulse noises from electric fences vanish. Broadband pulse junk from a faulty sodium vapour street lamp that is S9 on 160M vanishes. Not quite so good with the same source on 30M. I've no complaints. With apologies I will copy the following post from October 2000: Thought I'd add my two (binary) bits worth to the NB discussion: I find that my NB is very effective on an annoying popping sound (mostly on 80M) that I suspect is caused by an electric fence in the area. NB1 reduces it considerably and NB2 removes it completely. I get similar results for certain types of static crashes: NB1 is somewhat effective and NB2 is very effective. However, neither seems to be too effective against electrical noise from drill motors, etc. Back in August a couple of folks posted notes that they had increased C12 on the NB board by a factor of 10 to 20 (thus increasing the blanking gate width to around 1-2 milliseconds) and got much better blanking of electrical noise. So I decided to give that a try. Increasing C12 to 0.1uF definitely resulted in better attenuation (with NB2 selected) of some types of electrical and atmospheric noise. However, it resulted in a rather raspy sounding CW signals. Backing off to 0.047uF worked just about as well on noise and did not produce any noticeable effects on signals. As a result, I have made the following mod to my NB board: 1. Changed C11 from 0.001uF to 0.0068uF (using the original C12 cap) to give an NB1 blanking pulse width of 65-70 us (instead of 10 us). 2. Changed C12 from 0.0068uF to 0.047uF to give an NB2 blanking pulse width of around 500 us (instead of 70 us). Seems to be a good overall compromise for the types of noise that I hear. Your results may vary. 72/73, Larry W1HUE/7 Regards, Mike VP8NO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] KSB2
G'day, Currently in the process of building a second KSB2 module for #1400 so that I can do various mods to the original. Having reached the stage of installing the crystals I pondered the desirability and possibility of grounding the cases lower down as is now normal for the basic CW filter. This is easily done if the following sequence is employed: Instead of fitting all the crystals in one go: a) X4, then a short grounding wire about 1/3 of the way up the face of X4 b) X3, then a short grounding wire about 1/3 of the way up the corner of X3 c) X5, as for X3 d) X1 & X2. Curl the grounding wire across the edges of the crystals about 1/3 of the way up e) X6 & X7, as for X1 & X2 above. For the last two it is necessary to be careful not to toast C23. I have a picture of the result if anyone is interested. Maybe the N0SS web site if this method is thought useful. Not completed the module yet so no Spectrogram plot. [Elecraft] KPA100 & EC2
G'day, Ooops, I failed to notice the ventilation along the edge of the KPA100 heatsink, so no problem after all. Now trying a little experiment with a small PC PSU type 12V dc fan propped up at one edge about 40 degrees by a wire version of the tilt stand and blowing on/along the heatsink front to back on the PA's side. At 30 watts output QRSS10 the heatsink is just warm to the touch. Also, the fan is pretty quiet, in fact the noisy little bugger on the back of the KPA100 hasn't even switched on so I guess I will have to select "Fan LO/HI" to stir the air in the EC2. G'day, > Sounds like both K2's I have had. 38xx and 44xx. The output jumps all over > the place. My amp does not like it either. When I posted about it, the > response I got was that is "normal". If this is the often reported O/P power change then yes this is "normal", however, it shouldn't be. The problem is really only apparent when the KPA100 is installed so QRP ops will not notice it. The cure is the change in value of one resistor in the ALC loop. I'm not near any documentation so I can't tell you the resistor designation. There is a test procedure on the Elecraft web site to optimise the value but I believe in most case just changing the value to 1k-1.2k ohms does the trick. Just make sure you have at least 10W output on 10 metres before you do it. I'm surprised that at this stage of product maturity the problem still exists in new kits. I have a log periodic for 18-30MHz on ant-1 and a vertical for lower bands on ant-2. It does not matter if the atu stays in circuit and "tunes" the matched resonant antenna. Just the same as matching to the dummy load. My vertical is a good 50 ohm match on 10MHz but I also very occasionally press it into service on 7MHz where the ATU keeps the PA happy. [Elecraft] Audio Level - KDSP2
G'day, For quite a while I've noticed some low level but irritating addition to the audio which I have put down to the KDSP2. So I decided to swap it out for the KAF2. Sure things were sweeter in the audio but I decided to swap again so that I could do the mod to reduce the ringing of AFIL-2. One thing I immediately noticed was that the audio output for the same gain pot setting was much higher with the KDSP2 installed. A quick check of the CF-G setting showed it was still at the default 0.0dB, #1400 has never been short of audio. I slowly reduced the CF-G gain setting to -3.0dB and things improved in the low level irritating addition stakes. Time will tell. The Cn-G remains at 2.0dB and the audio level of the CW signal remains the same with NR on or off. Does anyone else notice that many CW signals these days are somewhat less than T9. I was beginning to believe it was to do with the DSP but a tune up the band would find another similarly strong signal singing pure. OK, most of my operation is by choice on the margins, weak signal and long path stuff, just about everything from here is DX anyway, and I can tell when the signal is suffering propagation effects. JA long and short path at the same time on the grey line and the 30M vertical is almost impossible to copy. Something I am planning to note is the frequency of the odd and the pure just in case it's a synth step boundary thing. It happens on all bands so it isn't the 40M "weird on one frequency" issue, never had it anyway. Re: [Elecraft] Noisy AF gain pot on K2
G'day, <> minimum setting. (I'm 74 & a bit deaf!!) Has anyone done the mod and achieved near silence at the minimum position?? Thanks in anticipation. Re: [Elecraft] Colour (Color)
OK Gentlemen, It looks like the sisterhood has it. | As presented to all men before their wedding day: | Law 1: the wife is always correct | Law 2: When in doubt, refer to law 1... The lady director of the company I work for says there is a third law: Law 3. All husbands should know their place - in the wrong | the color is "Granite.'" Granite does it for me. [Elecraft] Slow Web Site
G'day, I've been trying to download the construction manual for the EA3BLQ K2 digital interface. The site: http://www.qsl.net/ea3blq/download_ang.htm Is pathetically slow, <1000 bytes/sec and for a 2.4Mbyte download that is not an option. Anyone know another source? Re: [Elecraft] OT: "Line level"
G'day, My interpretation of the point that G3VVT was making is that a blanket dismissal of the 600 ohm reference is hazardous depending upon the circumstances. I also know nothing about pro audio, however, like G3VVT I have had a long and varied career in telecommunications. 600 ohms is the general impedance of 0.5mm diameter conductor poly insulated twisted pair telephone cable at audio frequencies. This drops to about 150 ohms at T1/E1 frequencies over the same pair. All the telco test equipment I have worked with at audio level offers 600 ohm source and terminations as well as high impedance bridging. AF attenuators were all 600 ohm balanced input/output. Impedances in transmission systems commonly change along the line. In our first earth station, built 20 years ago, we went from 600 ohm input to the PCM channel equipment, from there 75 ohm to the up/down converters and 50 ohm for the rest of the SHF link. It was essential to make sure you had the right matching transformers in your test set-up when making measurements. The USA and Europe has a history of doing things differently, a totally different coding law for PCM, different baseband data rates and hierarchy. and on. Standards are great, so many to choose from! G'day, > While I can't think of any definite reasons, but it sounds like you are > hearing a carrier somewhere near where the K2 input is tuned (28 mHz band). 7th harmonic of the 4 MHz clock in the KPA100? It runs all the time. Easily heard at the bottom end of 28 MHz. Similarly the 4 MHz clock on the K2 control board. Re: [Elecraft] DSP Filter?
G'day, | Folks, I guess I just started removing the KAF2 for filter aligment when I | first had to deal with it Unnecessary 'cos there is a slide switch on the KAF2 just for that purpose, to bypass it. If the KPA100 lid is fitted, the switch can be conveniently used just by removing the top panel just in front of the heatsink.
