[Elecraft] OT: FCC Exams

2012-09-01 Thread Mike, W9QS
In the late 80#39;s it was time to upgrade. I held a conditional for 30 years.
After lots of studing and code practice I made the trip to Chicago and took
both the advanced and extra. Had to take them in order: advanced, extra 20
wpm, and then Extra written. It was a long day but passed all three. I
remember two questions on CW test. Had to choose between physician and
physicist. I guessed right. Antenna was also a 4 element wire beam. Those
were the days. Yes, they still used the tape machines and those WW2 headphones.

In less than 24 hours I will be on
my way to FDIM and Dayton.
I will see some of you there, and will have a great time.
I will not be taking my email with me this year.  I
will sort through it all after I get back.
Let's get together at the FDIM hotel and have a Foster beer
Thursday evening just before the Build-A-Thon in memory of
Hank Kohl K8DD (SK), he will be missed.

I'm trying to install an older M8 with my K3 for PSK31. I can't seem to find a

I have enjoyed very much all the comments on the subject of
 QRP and the rigs
(Wayne mentioned), K1s, K2s, K3s. etc. There are others of
 course and bet
many started with that 6L6 and thought it was the most
 powerful station on
earth. Many of us old timers are reliving and with the
 good receivers now
days like Elecraft, Ten-Tec and others we are truly able to
 enjoy lower
power more, because the distant stations can hear us
 better.

A challenge is good in anything we undertake and create a
 spirit of mission.
QRP is obviously a challenge for better antennas, better
 coax, more skilled
operating, better tennis balls to get it over that limb or
 more donuts.
There is something for everyone in Ham Radio and the
 fellowship is a
wonderful part. This reflector is a large positive to this
 end.

Now I'll be quiet and crawl back up the headphones and
 play QRP with my K2
knowing the K3 and Orion is near by.

[Elecraft] Roofing Filter question

2008-12-18 Thread Mike, W9QS
I have a K3/10 on order. I have used my K2 for over a year and find the
filters to be very good. I operate 90% on the time on QRP CW. I'm looking for
opinions on which roofing filters I might include.

[Elecraft] K2 cover

2008-03-04 Thread Mike, W9QS
I received my cover for my K2 from Rose today and it
exceeds all of my expectations. I wanted it to be in
University of Illinois colors and she matched them
perfectly. A quality product. I highly recommend
them to anyone with Elecraft equipment.

I now have them on 3 bands. 20, 17 and 15. All with

[Elecraft] ARRL CWDX

2008-02-18 Thread Mike, W9QS
My first attempt with my new K2. Pretty tough from
here in the Black Hole central Illinois. 50 Q's
with 42 country mult's. Worked about 5 hours. Best
was DL1 on 80 and KH6 on 40. Antenna G5RV up about 30
feet. The K2 continues to amaze me.

Also worked VP6DX on 18 MHZ.

[Elecraft] K2 and PTT problem

2008-02-11 Thread Mike, W9QS
I recently installed the SSB board in my K2. The
board functions fine in VOX but i cannot get the PTT
function to work. I'm using an ICOM HM36 mic and
followed the recommended wiring for it. (PTT to pin
5) The PTT switch in the mic is fine. Even without
the mic connected if I ground pin 5 I still do not get
the PTT function. Am I missing something?

I am very pleased with the results so far. I worked
several PA in the contest this weekend on 20.

[Elecraft] Rigbaster M8 question

2008-01-07 Thread Mike, W9QS
I have an M8 rigblaster that I used with my IC718. I
has the 8 pin Icom connector on it. I would like to
use it with the K2. I plan on using it mainly for
PSK31 and maybe a little RTTY. I've ordered the SSB
board. Is there information on how the jumpers are
connected inside for the K2? I used VOX with the 718
and will probably do the same with the K2.

Any ideas or help appreciated. Please answer off list
unless you feel the entire list needs the info.

The 718 will definitely be the backup if I even keep
it. HI

[Elecraft] K2 #6324 is running

2008-01-05 Thread Mike, W9QS
My K2 Serial #6324 is complete.

First contact was with the California Fox on 40.
There is no comparison between the IC718 and the K2 on
the receive side. Love both filters.

Many thanks to Gary Surrancy for his guidance and
patience in helping me find the HI-CUR problem.

[Elecraft] K2 trouble

2007-12-13 Thread Mike, W9QS
I have a problem with the first part of section 3
testing. I set the power level to 2.0. When I press
and hold tune I get HI CUR on the LCD for about
1/2 second and power is at .1. Nothing seems to be
warm. Q6, 7 and 8 all seem Ok and not shorted.

Anything I might have missed before I start taking it
all apart again?

[Elecraft] K2 parts question

2007-12-12 Thread Mike, W9QS
Hello to the group.

This is my first post. I'm assembling a K2 serial
number 6327. All is well and I'm working on section 3
of the RF board. I have a question about Q6. The
parts list as a number of C2166 but mine is a C5739P.
Is this a direct replacement or do I have the wrong
part.

This is the first problem I've encountered and this
kit is the best by far I've ever built. (I go back to
the '50s first kit was a Heatkit AT-1)

[Elecraft] K2 parts

2007-12-12 Thread Mike, W9QS
Thanks to all that responded. I'll use the part. Don
said it was because of ROHS problems. We have the
same trouble here at work. Also thru' parts are
getting very scarce.
