[Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?
Looking for some portable paddles to use with my K2. Do any of you use the Palm Mini-Paddles? Are they really worth $95, their current selling price? Also, I wonder how they compare with the Paddlettes at $70 shipped? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. 73, Mike N4JX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Recommended K3/100 filters
My K3/100 has been on order for a couple of weeks now. Really excited about the prospect of it getting here on down the road. Here is my question . . . what optional filters should be ordered for this rig? I work SSB mainly, and some CW. And neither in contest situations really. I was thinking about the 250 and 500 Hz CW filters, as well as the 2.8Khz SSB. What do some of you K3 owners think about this? What are your recommendations? [Elecraft] OT - American hamming in UK
To my friends across the pond (and here in the states): My son and I are traveling to UK in mid-February to visit some family and see the country. Flying in to London, then heading north to Newcastle and points beyond, ending up in N. Scotland. Some of my ham buddies are encouraging me to take a rig and do some hamming to try and make some contacts back in the states. If I do, I will be taking my K2/100 for the job. I have some questions in this regard: 1) Do you think it will be more trouble than it is worth trying to get radio gear through security, customs, etc? I will have it secured in a Pelican type case with custom fit foam. Just don't want a hassle in trying to get it in and out of the country. 2) Suggestions for a nice portable 20a switching power supply? I am looking for a smaller unit I can include in the case with the radio. And it must have 110/220v power options. I saw an Alinco that seemed to fit the bill. I welcome your ideas. 3) What type of power plug adapter would I need to fit the receptacles in your fair land? 4) What antenna would you suggest . . . I am thinking about a 20 and/or 40 meter coax fed dipole. Again, open to suggestions. 5) Any licensing tips or suggestions? From what I read it appears there is a reciprocal agreement in place. I just need to make sure I have a my license and a copy of the agreement. Sorry if an off topic post like this is inappropriate here. I do know there are a number of UK hams (and Elecraft brothers) on this reflector and thought they may have some helpful insight. As well as you yanks that have maybe already done some hamming from UK. [Elecraft] K2 SSB adjustment
The audio quality on my K2 was pretty bad on SSB, transmit and receive. I followed the SSB manual advice and adjusted BFO1 using Cal Fil on upper and lower sideband (on 80 meters) until I got it sounding pretty good. Not perfect. But pretty decent. I then tried to transmit on 10 meters upper, and the SSB quality was terrible. Like it, too, needed adjustment. I was under the impression that doing this once on any HF band would work for all. Is this not true? Any suggestions for getting the SSB sounding good on this fine rig? (FYI, I was transmitting for testing of audio quality and feedback on my initial adjustments, and had nearby ham helping me listen and offer suggestions. My rig is wired for Kenwood mikes, and I was using the MC-43 and a Heil Pr-20 for testing.) Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. I want to get the SSB transmit and receive sounding as good as possible. 73, Mike N4JX K1/4 #2319 K2/100 #6042 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Strange KPA100 behavior
Don, This evening I have had a chance to look at my KPA100 again. I verified that I am still unable to control output above 11 watts . . . . above 11 watss it is putting out 165 watts (connected to Bird 43 meter) and showing 7:1 SWR on K2 display. Below 11 watts the output seems correct. I was incorrect in an earlier email. I DO have blue toroids at L16 and RFC1, and L15 is empty. I did verify that C31 is .22mF (m22J63). I checked T4 . . . looks okay and I seem to have proper resistance between 1/3 and 2/4. And I do have continuity between 1/4. One curious observation . . . as I was working through the check and alignment process again, I can only get 26.5k and 27.1k out of R26 and R27, versus the 43k recommended for C1 adjustment. Not sure what to look at from this point? Sorry for the prior misinformation. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike N4JX - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mike Geddes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, June 11, 2007 8:56 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Strange KPA100 behavior Mike, Is the K2 displaying 165 watts? Or is the K2 displaying 0.2 watts or lower while an external wattmeter is displaying 165 watts? What is your test setup that gives you a 7:1 SWR? If you are feeding a resistive 50 ohm dummy load with good coax, the wattmeter (either internal or external) should read 1:1 even with a KPA100 problem. Tell us more so we can help with your problem - Taking a very wild guess, you either have a non-functioning wattmeter in the KPA100, or the KPA100 wattmeter is not calibrated, or you have a parasitic oscillation in the KPA100. Since this is a new kit - do you have blue toroid cores at L16 and RFC1 or do you have red toroids at L15 and L16? And tell us what the value of C31 is and whether you determined the value by looking at the capacitor (preferred) or whether you just looked at the parts list/schematic. Thanks, Mike N4JX - From: Gary Hvizdak Subject: RE: You have piqued my curiosity now!! (was [Elecraft] Will K2 remain stable?) Mike, At the Orlando hamfest this past February, Eric said he hoped the K2 would be around for five or ten years, with the only possible changes due to parts obsolescence. I got the impression that he meant that there would continue to be a demand for it for this long. While I'm writing I'd like to invite you to check out a project - requested by a few of our Rework EliminatorT Un-Module Header customers - which I've been working on for the past month or so. It's a small assembly of two very tiny four-layer PCBs. Together they make it possible to reconfigure the K2 for any of the microphone wiring standards described in the KSB2 manual . by removing just the left side panel of the enclosure! Such a product might come in very handy over the next few months as K2s are traded-in for K3s, and newly licensed (no code) hams pick up used K2s. [Elecraft] How about an Elecraft Bulletin Board?
Greetings. I was just thinking to myself how slow the Elecraft reflector was yesterday on Friday, 4/27. What a difference a day makes! Wow. Certainly there is a lot of well-justified excitement (frenzy?) over the awesome newly announced K3. Congratulations Elecraft and I know it will continue the tradition of innovation and excellence we have come to know and appreciate from your company! On another note . . . . there is now another real interest out there among Elecraft fans, while some are still mainly interested in the K2, some in the K1, some now in the K3, some in other Elecraft kits and tools, and some in all of it. Those that are building or enhancing or troubleshooting a K2 may not be as interested in all of the whirlwind surrounding the K3 (which, again, is justified). So I was wondering if you (Eric or Wayne) have ever considered an Eham type bulletin board where you had sections of interest as a means of communication and information? This may be especially useful as your product line becomes more diverse, along with the interests of your customers. Just a thought. You guys are so innovative an open to customer input and we appreciate it. Re: [Elecraft] K2 no receive . . . where to start?
Thanks for all of the good advice! The readers and contributers to this reflector are a great resource and a wealth of good information. I think I discovered the problem, and it is rather simple. For some reason I had reversed some of the 1SV149 diodes, specifically D30, D31, D32, D33, and D29. Kind of a bonehead thing to do, not sure how it happened. I have a theory . . . . after I stuff the board with a qty of components, I use blue masking tape to secure the parts prior to flipping the board over (in my pc board holder) and soldering. These could have fallen out, and I was careless sticking them back in prior to soldering. Or . . . I could have just stuck the little buggers in the wrong way in the first place! You have to pay attention to those thin TO-92 packages. Anyway . . . pulled a lead off of one when removing it so will order a couple more and see how it works. I do hear hiss and white noise, no propagated signals whatsoever, except one very light cw transmission that sounded kind of like thumps on the wrong side of the band. [Elecraft] Paddle key setup
When using a paddle key, I have naturally used left (thumb) for dahs and right for dits, and set my gear up that way. I think I read during K1 build and setup that this is reverse from the normal setting. Also read somewere else that the dits on left and dahs on right setup evolved from use of bugs, and that if you were to go to field day and use another's rig with paddle it would most likely be setup that way. I know this may be a subjective question . . . but is there a standard for this? Is it purely personal preference? I would be interested in your insight and opinions! 73, Mike N4JX K1/4 2319 on the air K2 6042 next project ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Keyer paddle setup
Thanks for all the great feedback! I am a relatively new CW op (though of course passed it for my licenses along the way) but only more recently wanting to improve my skills and develop somewhat of a decent fist. To that end, I have taken the microphone off of my big rig and starting to be more regular on CW. Been using my recently built K1 the most lately. The good news is that I don't think I am too entrenched in my current mode to change to the more standard mode. I think it is like anything . . . important to learn good form early in the development of a skill, because it is much more difficult to change once proficiency is reached. Not sure why I started with dahs on left. I built some QRP kits and guess I just wired them that way. Never really have had a CW op elmer. But I have a bunch on this great site! Thanks again for your feedback. It was interesting and helpful. 73, Mike N4JX K1/4 # 2319 on the air K2 # 6042 next project - Original Message - From: Ron D'Eau Claire [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2007 4:20 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Keyer paddle setup I took a slightly different approach. Sending with my right hand freed my left hand to write while I'm sending. That is, if I can write and send CW at the same time. Personally I'm still working on walking while chewing gum... I finished the K2 (6065) at about 10pm last night, everything was nominal, my only concern being the low output power on 15 meters (7 watts). I should go back and do a full alignment as handing the RF board was sure to disturb the mounted parts... The entire kit had one missing .1 cap, or I lost it, I had one on hand to use so no problem. I do NEED a knob with a finger dimple! Between 10 and 1130 PM I heard some signals on 80 and 40 meters, not much on the other bands although I did not listen carefully. I think filter 2 needs a tweak and the built in speaker sounds fuzzy, but otherwise all is good. All the adjustments worked, and did not require much tweaking, nothing was at the limit or close to it, most things were quite close right out of the bag. I want to get the ssb option and the auto tuner eventually, and listen to plenty of slow code, then might actually get on the air with the rig! I did not track the hours, but I got the kit Thursday, worked on it Thursday night, Friday night, most of Saturday, Sunday night, and Monday night. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Noise Blanker version diffs?
Thanks Don. You have answered my main question which regarded performance. I am not unhappy at all with the NB if it performs the same as the latest version. Was just curious about the Rev differences. I guess Rev D then just corrects some issues with the C board labeling, and possibly a more efficient use of components? It was changed for some reasons, otherwise there would not be a D version. Thanks again for your response and your contributions to this forum. If you are unhappy with the board you have in hand, you may want to contact the folks at Elecraft to see if there is some kind of action available that would satisfy you. 73, Don W3FPR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Interesting Mike. Thanks for sharing. Now I don't feel like I am missing out on anything! 73, James N4JX --- :It's much simpler than that. There has **NEVER** been a revision D PCB for the :KNB1. The text in the KNB1 manual has mentioned the revision D PCB since the :first KNB1 was sold 6.5 years ago, but no one has a KNB1 with a rev. [Elecraft] K1 Noise Blanker version diffs?
I am the proud builder/owner/operator of K1/4 #2319. Had it fired up and on the air this past weekend. Great little rig. I was building the K1NB board tonight, and noticed the manual has directions for Rev C and Rev D. The instructions for Rev C include installing a cap in a mis-named location (there are 2 C6's on the board), omitting a C8, and other differences vs. Rev D. My questions are these: 1. Since my K1 and accessories (including K1NB) are a recent purchase, should I not have received the latest rev, which appears to be D? 2. In my experience, later revisions are based on experiences with earlier versions, and are thus improved. Is Rev D a better design / performer than Rev C? 3. If there is a Rev D, why do they even ship Rev C versions? To get rid of old stock? For a recent purchase, it just seems a little odd to be building an older version of the board than the latest available. Kind of like buying an older version of a software program when a newer is already released. Any insight or answers to the above questions?
