Re: [Elecraft] The Phone Call

2019-12-12 Thread Mike Goldstein

Ken, I have had a similar experience, but it was almost ten years ago!

I was trying to figure out how to do something with my (then) new K3,
around the Xmas period, and put in an email query to Elecraft
support. I didn't expect to hear back from them for a few days,
because it was very close to the Xmas/New Year period, and the world
shuts down (well, most of the important part!).

Amazing! Not only did I have a reply within a day from Support, but I
seem to recall a followup email from Wayne, that made my Xmas Day
...twixt the two of them, they solved my problem, and very much
impressed me with the kind of support they offer.

I'm still waiting on a query I put into Kenwood about five years ago,
regarding my (then new) TS590, and from Icom after writing an
extensive letter last year, about my IC7610. Wayne, you were just a
tad late in announcing the K4, and I now love my IC7610.

Quite recently, I queried Elecraft about mods to the same K3, while
resources are still available, and had a comprehensive reply within a day.

[Elecraft] Flummoxed about my antenna

2018-12-02 Thread Mike Goldstein

How do you reply directly to a post? Beats me ...

A month or so before the 160M test, I finally had my yew tree, which
was gradually enveloping my Butternut vertical, "put down". I then
had to open up the coax feed splice to the antenna, so I could use my
antenna analyzer to help me return the vertical to its original
tuning characteristics ... all done successfully. I closed up the
connection with new waterproofing, and checked the antenna
periodically to ensure it would be ready.

3 weeks before the contest, I found my antenna would not tune
anywhere! Very strange. I had just renewed the waterproofing on the
splice, so I didn't think that could be the problem. The antenna has
been up 8 years, so I spent some hours removing every mechanical
connection one at a time, cleaning them (and they were grungy!), and
rebuilding the antenna. Surely that would cure the problem?

Nope, same results. In desperation I ordered a new Buryflex feedline,
as the line sits on the ground in my backyard (never heard of
Buryflex before, and the original line is RG213). Was it new when I
installed it? I can't remember!

By the time the new line arrived, our weather window for working on
antennas had pretty well closed, and the contest was getting closer!
The antenna was unusable.

Lo and behold, we got a day of sunshine, and 40F temps! Out I go, and
open the waterproofed connection once again. I'm going to check the
antenna tuning at the antenna, and the original line looking back
toward the shack, using a 50 ohm termination.

Well, the antenna still looks good, so the current choke must also be
good. Measuring back through the coax line, I see an SWR of 1:1,
which at least indicates to me that the line is usable. Very strange.
It looks the same when I move the termination to the antenna end, and
measure the line at the shack end. Stranger and stranger ... in
desperation, I connect the line back to the splice, and make the same
measurement again from the shack, and the antenna seems to be
operating first rate.

So, I tighten up the connection with a wrench, re-waterproof the
splice, pray to the gods, and check it again, and all is as it was 8 years ago.
No signs of water in the coax, either. I can only assume that the
splice connection to the coax line somehow became loose or
disconnected, but it took weeks to do so, after I'd done my
adjustments. Didn't feel loose, when I disconnected it.

4 days to the contest, it's all working well - my garden is muddy in
the extreme at this time of year, so to Hell with replacing the coax
line. The original line seems to be working for the moment, and it
will be a lot more fun to do it next spring!

Later - 200 QSOs in the contest on the weekend, over 7 hours. I heard
EU, very unusual, and worked down into the Caribbean, and out to SD
and MT ... and the band was definitely lively. Sure didn't do any
harm to clean up that antenna after 8 years, even if it didn't fix
the original problem!

Bill, as a "pro technical writer", perhaps you've heard of the

However - If I may quote the end ... "in the same choir you're

Should this not read as, "in the same choir to which you're preaching?"

[Elecraft] K3 speaker audio gone!

2012-08-28 Thread Mike Goldstein
I've lost audio from both the internal speaker in the K3,
and from the SPKRS output jack on the rear panel.

At the end of the the first week of using a new NESCAF audio
filter (which drives my speaker) with the K3, I changed bands,
listened briefly on CW, with the NESCAF filter in the circuit. I
then changed to SSB, and because the NESCAF filter was adjusted for a
very narrow audio bandwidth, I decided to switch it out of the
circuit, while the K3 was delivering audio, at a comfortable listening level..

The audio filter was driven from the SPKRS jack on the back
of the K3, using a stereo plug, with one channel floating. The SPKRS
jack was CONFIGured as SPKRS = 1.

A front panel toggle switch on the filter panel turns off the power
to the NESCAF filter, and re-routes the speaker audio connection from
the filter output, to the K3 output directly. I had done this often,
for the first week of operations.

This time, however, I briefly saw a "HI CURR" indication on the front
panel of the K3, and then my speaker audio vanished.

Unplugging all connections from the rear panel SPKRS jack, and the
front panel PHONES jack, no longer allows the K3's internal speaker
to produce audio. Nothing I tried would result in any audio from the
external speaker, after connecting that speaker to either of the
phono jacks that were tied to the rear SPKRS jack, through the stereo plug.

The INPUT jack on the SCAF filter (to which the K3's SPKRS jack was
connected) passes through an isolating capacitor, then a 27K
resistor, before being connected to the chip in the audio filter.

Resetting SPRKS = 2, in the CONFIG menu, had no effect on producing
audio in the external, or internal speaker.

I still have audio at the PHONES jack on the front panel, so I can
still use the K3. It subsequently accounted for 380 QSOs in the NAQP
CW contest, providing it usual flawless performance.

I still have audio at the PHONES jack on the rear panel, as well.

My theory (and Gary at Elecraft Service agrees it might be the cause)
is that the audio chip in the K3 didn't like the abrupt change of
load impedance, from 27K (approx.) to infinity, to 8 ohms, while it
was delivering audio..

I've since soldered a 15K resistor across the input jack of the audio
filter, and will do likewise for any other audio filters I encounter, and use.

Puzzling, huh?

[Elecraft] Windows - based TRlog

2010-02-13 Thread Mike Goldstein
Hello, All:

To go together with your new and shiny K3 contest rig, perhaps you're
looking for a sweet and simple Windows-based software package?

I've used TRLog for many years, but it's a DOS-based program and
doesn't work nicely with my XP operating system. Whenever I looked at
a Windows-based software package like N1MM, they talked about
problems with sending CW, without peripheral keying systems.

Check out TR4W (TR 4 Windows). It's very similar to TRLog, based on
Trees's code, and works very well with the K3, controlling it through
the serial port. I've found no problems with the computer sending
CW through the K3. The author, Dmitriy, will respond to your queries
and ideas.

Best of all, the software is free!

[Elecraft] Thoughts on internal/external ATU for K3

2010-02-24 Thread Mike Goldstein
I had to respond to this query, as the K3's internal ATU puts me in
the Star Wars category!

For the past 33 years, one primary antenna I have used is an inverted
vee with fifty foot legs, fed with 40 feet of open-wire line, and up
to "K3 time", two switched external tuners with baluns. I could
operate any two bands I chose without retuning, or apply a "touchup"
across 80/160M.

Since owning my K3, I've added a Balun Designs external balun to this
system, switched, so I can drive the open-wire line directly from the
ATU in the K3 through the balun, or use my traditional system. Of
course, to use any rig other than the K3 in my shack, I'd still need
my traditional tuner system.

The K3 ATU will beautifully match my balun/vee system on all bands
except 160M, where the antenna is too small. I use this arrangement
on all bands, 80-10 Meters, except for the bands 20/15/10M, covered
by my triband Yagi - but the ATU will match those bands, as well!

Retune the ATU each time I change bands? Forget it! I did a "tuning
run" on each band when I first set up the system, and then the K3
remembered all the settings, per band.

What's more, I drive my traditional tuner system/Yagi from ANT1, and
my external balun from ANT2, and I sometimes also use the ATU when
driving the Yagi ... and the K3 remembers all those combinations.

The upshot is that, during the recent DX contest, I worked all bands
80 through 10M, simply changing bands on the K3 as needed, and the
right settings for the ATU, the correct use of ANT1/ANT2, and the
necessary use of the ATU for the Yagi as desired, were all switched
in automatically.

What's more, a mouse click on the bandmap of my logging software
would have me quickly moved from 10M to 80M, antenna changed, RF
output changed, antenna tuned for the right frequency, and ready to
call a station. When Elecraft devise a way to call DX in their own
language, my life will be complete.

Is this Star Wars, or what? Guys, when Elecraft says the ATU
remembers intraband, crossband, and inter-band settings (are they all
different?), as well as ANT1/ANT2 settings, they aren't kidding! I
have capability here I never had before, in all my 53 years of hamming!

Not buy the internal ATU? Bite your tongue!

[Elecraft] blinking SPLIT icon

2010-04-05 Thread Mike Goldstein
Hello, K3 operators all:

Have you encountered this problem? You find a DX pileup, find the DX
station, then determine a frequency where you wish to call the DX.
However, when you push SPLIT, you find the SPLIT icon, a mode
indicator, and the little "down arrow" that points to VFO B are all
blinking. Is this a firmware bug you've just found?

Here's the word from Wayne:

"It is not a bug: the K3 is just reminding you that you are about to
enter cross-mode SPLIT. If you do A>B twice you'll set VFO B's mode
to the same mode as VFO A, thereby eliminating the flashing icon
warning. Another way is to use BSET to check what mode VFO B is in,
and change it if necessary." He adds that this can be stored on a
per-band, per-mode basis.

Did I ever know that VFO B could be in USB mode, when I assumed I was
in CW? I do now! 73 de VE3GFN

[Elecraft] K3 and FD multiband antenna

2010-06-11 Thread Mike Goldstein
Gary, my regular HF antenna for 80,40, 18, and 12M is an inverted
vee, fifty foot legs, apex at 40 feet, and fed with open wire line. I
use a tribander for 20/15/10, although I could also use the vee.

The K3's ATU matches the vee beautifully on all those bands, using an
external balun. I've worked DXCC on 8oM and 40M using the vee. As a
FD antenna, you'll be very happy with it ... 73 Mike VE3GFN

[Elecraft] posting directions

2012-12-22 Thread Mike Goldstein

Hello, Mailman:

Last time I wanted to post a message on the reflector (and I do it
very seldom), I couldn't figure out how to do it!

I guess you have to go to this "options" link, but the descriptor
for the link doesn't mention "posting", it just says
"...To subscribe to
the list, or to change your subscription options (like set mail
delivery to 'off'), click here for the Options page. "

No mention of going here to post a message!

Is there another way to do it? Is the "posting" option a secret,
like the "specials" on my favorite restaurant's repertoire, never
shown on the menu, but always available for the asking?

It really should be quite obvious how to do it ... we are in the
communications biz, aren't we?

[Elecraft] directions

2012-12-23 Thread Mike Goldstein
Thanks to all for the response(s) to my earlier post, regarding
posting directions.

I'd intended that message only for the "Mailman" himself, and not to
have it posted.

Having seen your ideas, I agree that posting, (like everything else,
once you know how) is easily possible, but it's not obvious!

For example, I don't recall any time that I've read these posts, then
scrolled down to the very bottom of the message ... that's generally
where I would expect to see advertising.

I'm only advocating the idea of making it obvious. Obvious would be
a large red notice, on the main reflector page, that says, "To post a
message, click here."

Non of these other methods are at all obvious (and sure eluded me
this time, after four years of looking at this
reflector). Everything should be tested on your grandmother. If
Grandma can't figure it out, head back to the drawing board.

73 all, and enjoy the holidays. Mike VE3GFN

[Elecraft] Heil Proset

Using the K3, has anyone else had problems with the Heil Proset
supplied by Elecraft (model iC) as to audio feedback on VOX, very
sensitive controls of VOX gain and Mic gain, etc. etc?

These problems can be masked as RFI, but adding toroids on the cable
has little effect. No other microphones seem to have these problems.

I've wrestled with this for 6 years, and finally decided to beat it.
I had the same problems on my Kenwood TS590, with this headset.

I have the solution. Email directly to mg...@pathcom.com, if you
wish, as I don't receive email from the Elecraft reflector.

[Elecraft] K3 and Heil Proset

2014-09-20 Thread Mike Goldstein
I've had a few responses to my earlier query re using the Heil Proset
iC with the K3, others who have had similar problems - you are not alone!

Here is my original post:

"Using the K3, has anyone else had problems with the Heil Proset
supplied by Elecraft (model iC) as to audio feedback on VOX, very
sensitive controls of VOX gain and Mic gain, etc. etc?

These problems can be masked as RFI, but adding toroids on the cable
has little effect. No other microphones seem to have these problems"

Note that the Elecraft mobile mic. also has an electret cartridge,
but I usually use PTT with it, and would not notice VOX problems.

I've wrestled with this for 6 years, and finally decided to beat it.
I had the same problems on my Kenwood TS590, with this headset.

My solution was to buy a Heil Proset 6, with the HC6 cartridge, a
cartridge with much, much lower output. In the past couple of days,
I've tested it on the K3 and my Kenwood TS590 ... works a treat, and
no problems!

[Elecraft] CW Setup

2016-06-29 Thread Mike Goldstein
Well, as a ham who once tried a paddle back in the early 'sixties,
then went back to the bug, I can claim the electronic keyer in my K3
gets very little action! I send on a bug with my left hand, but at
age 16, who knew there were left handed bugs? I learned on a
right-handed bug, and have used my bugs backwards for almost 60 years
... I only realized I was doing it wrong after reading a QST article
where the hero said "... so I thumbed a fast five ...". H ... he
uses his thumb to send dits? But I use my thumb to send dahs ...

In my defense, however, I will confess that I taught myself to paddle
a canoe on the right side, after having mastered the left ... just
for those very windy days, when I'm in the canoe by myself. 73 Mike VE3GFN
