I get the same reports and mine is s/n #028 with the latest upgrades! Mike AC6JA In a message dated 1/8/2017 8:35:24 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, n7dxta...@gmail.com writes: Congratulations Ken, I got my K2 up and running in October!! Love the thing. I got the KAT100 working last month, and I am working on the KPA100 now. It hears just about as good as my K3 with the upgraded synthesizers in my humble opinion. I purchased an older kit that went up for sale last summer. It has every option including the KDSP2. CW sounds so sweet. I would really like to try the KAF2 just to hear the difference on CW. I find myself bypassing the KDSP2 on strong signals, just to hear the crystal filters by themselves. The KDSP2 really shines on weak signal work though. It's very satisfying to finish the K2 and have it work so well. I also get great audio reports on SSB. Long live the K2!! From: ac...@aol.com To: w...@bellsouth.net Sent: 8/1/2016 8:18:07 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time Subj: Re: [Elecraft] KX Paddles Yes. The digikey part that I purchased is: http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?keywords=S-ND I just straightened out the pins, wrapped the wires around the pins and soldered and shrink-wrapped the wires for protection. I used a twisted pair with a ground shield. I ohmed out the pinouts from my KXPD3 key and hooked up my Begali Adventure the same way. You need to be careful though that the Begali Adventure mounting bracket doesn't put any undue strain on the Digikey connector where it attaches to the KX3. You may need to shave off a little of the plastic as the Begali mounting bracket is slightly larger then the KXPD3. I am S much happier now with the way the Begali connects to the KX3 and it is such a better key with a much better operating angle than the KXPD3. The Begali Adventure paddle is the way to go! I modified my key with a 4-pin plug purchased from Digikey that mounts and plugs in to the KX3 just like the KXPD3 does so there is no dangling cable that has to plug into the KEY jack on the left side of the radio. Re: [Elecraft] Changing KX3 VFO
I too have been debating on whether or not to upgrade the VFO on my KX3 s/n #3237. Right now I have the SideKX panels and plastic cover with the stock knob which I primarily use when operating "from the field" in my backyard. This combination works well for the field use as the VFO has more friction and the stock knob fits under the plastic cover. I also have the 73cnc.com black knob w/ball bearing finger dimple THAT I LOVE, but the plastic cover won't fit over it, but for desk operation I would prefer that knob with the upgraded VFO to spin up and down the bands! So now I'm trying to justify a second KX3 with the upgraded VFO and the larger ball bearing finger dimple knob for use in the shack. Decisions, decisions Mike AC6JA In a message dated 2/17/2015 3:46:47 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, w3...@embarqmail.com writes: Mike, That decision is up to you. A good part of me says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but the other side says you should install the upgrades. K3-->KAT500/KAT500-->KPA500, I've trained my KAT500 for all 3 antennas on all the bands that each of them work on, and I run the KAT500 in MAN. All indications are that the KAT500 recalls the correct solution for the frequency when I QSY to a new frequency or band. I'm hardly an expert on the insides of Elecraft firmware, and I suppose it could be recalling on very first sign of RF and doing so very quickly so that I don't notice it, but I really don't think so. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?
I am using the most current firmware versions in the K3, KAT500, and KPA500. I am also using the Elecraft auxilliary cables. Not sure what else to check as to why the KAT500 won't update the tuner preselects when QSY'ing? Mike AC6JA In a message dated 6/14/2014 12:37:09 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, gdan...@windstream.net writes: Mike, Not normal! The KAT should QSY if the KAT500 is interfaced with the K3 & KPA500 as per the manual. It is trule a K=Line system! First - make sure you have the most current version of firmware. There have been a few updates that fixed issues that you describe. I have Beta 1.63 in my KAT500. You need the K3, KAT, & KPA all tied together as per the KAT manual. I may not have the same manual as you do but it is the section interfacing K3 & KPA with DB15 cables. Make sure that the antenna selection for each band is correct using the KAT500 Utility. Set the tune power in the K3 - I use 20 watts; because I had an early KAT and that was what it needed. Not sure if it affects the KAT but I have my K3 power set to per band for the KPA. Then you need to train (tune) the KAT on the band segments that you will be QSYing to. The bands have different segment sizes so check the manual. I tune with the KAT in Auto mode. Press the KAT Tune button then hold the K3 Tune button. This should initiate the tune function in the KAT500. I "Trained" my KAT on all bands that I use. I incremented the frequency from the bottom of the voice frequencies to the top frequencies. This did take a while but now I can QSY and a second or so after I stop turning the VFO dial I hear the relays in the KAT set. This means that the tuner is optimized when I transmit. BTW - I do run my tuner in MAN (manual) mode so it does not try to retune on voice modulation. Above is how I operate my KAT. I have an early Kit that has had several firmware updates. A couple were for the issue you seem to have. Mine works well for me with several antennas. Hope this might help you. If not others may have an idea of Elecraft will surly help on Monday. 73 George AI4VZ -----Original Message----- From: Mike Hagele AC6JA via Elecraft Sent: Saturday, June 14, 2014 3:11 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation? After I go to a new band, I need to tap my key momentarily to get the tuner to tune to the new frequency. Is this normal? Let me know as I thought the tuner would remember the presets when QSY'ing to a new frequency? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. [Elecraft] K3/KAT500 ATU Tune Operation
Is there any firmware in the works to get the K3/KAT500 ATU tune operation to work like the K2 and KX3? I use the ATU quite often and always find it frustrating to have to hit TUNE and wait for the match, and then have to hit TUNE again to bring the rig back into receive. It's nice that all you have to do on the K2 and KX3 with the internal ATU's is hit the TUNE button and it finds a match and automatically switches back to receive when it's done. Any info would be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] KE7X KX3 Book and Configuring: KX3, K3, KPA500, and KAT500
I remember a while back I was asking the same question about using my K2 and KX3 with my KPA500/KAT500 combo, and Eric responded that the KPAK3AUX Optional KPA500 to K3 AUX Cable Set cable should be left disconnected when using another rig besides the K3. I was debating on using a DB-15 data switch so I wouldn't have to keep plugging/unplugging the cable. Mike AC6JA In a message dated 4/22/2014 4:44:58 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, phys...@mac.com writes: So, is this normal behavior? I wasn't expecting any kind of comms between the K3 and the KPA500 that affects the STBY/OPER switching. It does seem that a power on/off cycle for the KPA500 is required to enable that switch. Is this designed to work this way or is this a flaw in the design or maybe a missing mini-feature of configuring two different transceivers with the KPA500. I admit to not scouring all of the documentation yet on the expected functionality of the STBY/OPER switch. 73, phil, K7PEH On Apr 22, 2014, at 4:14 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Phil, > > Let me get this straight - the KPA500 is communicating with the K3, then you switch to the KX3 and the KPA500 does not talk with the KX3. > > If that is what is happening, I would expect that to be the case.
