Re: [Elecraft] OT: Australian fires
Hi Wayne Thanks for thinking of us. A horrendous situation and at the worst possible time with so many people on their summer holidays in the most fire prone areas. We have a team of US / Canadian firefighters here that came over before Christmas to bring their expertise to the fight. And Aussies were in California and Canada during your fire season. Wonderful to see how we can help each other in trying times. [Elecraft] A New Choke Book - Some Questions
Hi Jim, Thanks for the New Choke Cookbook. Looking at your data, it seems to me that I could build a two core choke for the higher frequency bands and "spread" the overall choking impedance out by using different turns on each core, ie 11 turns on a 2.4" and 12 turns on a 2.4" . I believe there are no issues doing so, but would appreciate your confirmation. Also, do you have any guidance on the spacing required when packaging a two core choke, ie if the two cores were in a box, what vertical spacing is required between them? Re: [Elecraft] [K3-KPA500] SWR jumps up with 5 second key down
All, I think I've finally found the cause of my problem. The PVC spacer that goes around the driven element where it is attached to the boom plate has a cut down one side to to allow it to compress when tightened with a u-bolt. What I could not notice until I totally dismantled the element was that the split was full of carbon as was the mounting plate along the length of the split. I am assuming that the split which was facing up filled up with water and helped create an arc between the driven element and mounting plate. Hello Andrew, My set up is similar to Johhny, but with the cables connected from the KPA100. I am using relatively resonant antennas, so have tuned the KPA100/KAT100 combination into a dummy load on these bands and set the KAT100 in the locked mode (sorry can't remember the correct designation) so that there is no mismatch between the output of the KPA100/KAT100 and the KPA500. [Elecraft] RE: K2 Microphone Jack Grounding - Is there a Pin 1 Issue?
Hi Don, Thanks for the advice. I did it the easy way. Looking at the other jacks etc it seems that they are mounted to the enclosure panels, so probably no Pin 1 problems with them. The microphone jack is the odd one out as it is mounted via tabs to the pcb. Cheers Mike VK1KCK K2 #2599 _ From: Don Wilhelm [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, 7 January 2008 12:00 AM To: Mike Walkington Subject: Re: K2 Microphone Jack Grounding - Is there a Pin 1 Issue? Mike, To cure the 'pin 1' problem, it would be necessary to connect the mic jack shell both to the board ground and to the enclosure panel quite near the mic jack. Grounding to the enclosure would require drilling an additional hole in the front panel bext to the mic jack - preferrably a countersunk hole above one of the standoffs that are located next to the mic jack. But that kind of sheet metal work is not for everyone, and may be overkill. If is normally sufficient to ground the mic jack to the PC board ground. The K3 grounds the mic jack to the PC board. I would ground the jack to the PC board because that is easy to do. If you encounter problems such as RF pickup, you may want to add the ground to the case, but in extreme situations you would also want to similarly treat the KIO2 (and use balanced cable to the computer), the key jack, and perhaps any other connector on the K2 should be investigated for a 'pin 1' situation. Such extreme measures are rarely required. 73, Don W3FPR Mike Walkington wrote: Hi All, Thanks for getting back to me. I vaguely remember there being some discussion about a "pin 1 " issue. [Elecraft] Elecraft - Re Network Enabled Radio & Accessory Interface (Was USB Ports and Things)
Hi, I second this idea. I've been working on this one in my mind for ages. Mostly with the idea of being able to remotely operate my radio from anywhere in the house over a wireless network from a laptop. Secondly with the idea that I wouldn't need a dedicated computer at the radio end. Thirdly, that if done well, all the radio/equipment interfaces would become multiplatform, ie run off any comprehensive system/application. Much software has been written to make [mis]use of various interfaces on "standard" hardware. The use of a parallel port to control something is typical. What we really need is a general purpose device that interfaces on the network and may be easily addressed by software. In most systems software has easy access to the network so it seems to me to make sense to put our various bits of I/O into a bit of kit that speaks IP and plugs into an ethernet. 73 de Brian, WB6RQN Brian Lloyd - brian HYPHEN wb6rqn AT lloyd DOT com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Antenna Analyser - Phase Angle Sensor
Hi, When discussing antenna analysers there's always a discussion on the issue of measuring the sign of X. For some years now I've carted round an article out of the Power Amplifier Handbook titled High-Speed Microprocessor Controlled Antenna Matching Unit, in which the author implemented a phase angle sensor which output a logic one for inductive phase angle and logic 0 for capacitive. The circuit didn't look like it was too complex to implement, so I've always wondered why such a circuit isn't implemented in every antenna analyser. [Elecraft] Vetical Antennas
Hi All, I've moved to a new house and I'm trying to get a Hustler 5BTV working really well with my K2 in my new location. I plan to install the antenna in a ground plane configuration on a 2 storey home and feed it with coax. I was planning to use a few quarter wave radial for each of the bands of interest. I've had problems with TVI using this antenna before, so this time I will use some sort of a choke to block currents on the outer surface of the coax braid. Any suggestions on what I should use? How should I protect myself from lightning? I initially thought about running a lead from the base of the antenna to ground, but the length of this would probably turn the antenna into a vertical dipole. I was reading some doco for this antenna and read the following: Never use an antenna tuner to tune the antenna.Use of a tuner only fools the transmitter and does not correct a problem at the antenna. This doesn't seem right can I use my K2's tuners? Finally, I've been reading Moxon's HF Antennas for All Locations, and he doesn't seem to recommend quarter wave radials for ground planes. I'm not sure I comprehend why. Is anyone familiar with his concerns? Mike VK1KCK, K2 #2599 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I'm planning to allow you to enter a feedline characteristic Z, length and loss/100 ft., and then add a button that will allow you to display all the parameters as "at xmtr" or "at antenna". You could use any feedline type or length that you know the published specs on. I am also thinking about adding the feedline data entry capability to the standard LP-100 VCP (Virtual Control Panel). I would offer the ability to enter several feedlines, which would be selected based on frequency. I am considering allowing you to upload the feedline table to the LP-100 hardware as well, so that it would display correct antenna Z if desired. Since the LP-100 has a built-in frequency counter, the table selection would be automatic. I may also add a menu to allow the table to be entered at the hardware. For this to work in the hardware or VCP, you would have to determine the sign of X experimentally and enter it on the Vector display using the Up/Dn buttons. This would only have to be done once for each antenna. The Plot program does this automatically, by looking at the slope of the X plot for each data point. Some of this will be future updates of firmware or software. You can update the LP-100 firmware and software over the internet, and there will be regular updates offered for both. Updates will be free for life, although there will be charges for add-on hardware if it becomes necessary to add hardware for a particular option in the future. All updates will be backward compatible with the original hardware, however. 73, Larry N8LP ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 KPA100 Low Power Output Problem Mostly Solved
All, After thinking the advice I got from several of you and trolling back through the e-mail archives I found my problem. A little embarrassing to tell you, but the cause of my low KPA100 output power on all bands was due to a sagging power supply, but hopefully my experience will help others :( My paradigm (dastardly things that they are) was thinking that the KPA100's current need was the total required. I forgot to add in the basic K2's current needs! At least my component identification, soldering technique etc was OK :) Power output is now good on all bands except on 160 where I'm still experiencing excessive current drain. I still don't believe the results I got from scanning the LPFs with the antenna analyser. Specifically, what is the relationship between the SWR results and the likely cut-off frequency? What is the likely impact on receiver performance? Here is the synopsis of the SWR: 160m - Approx 1.0 from below 1.73MHz to 2.25MHz, climbs to 1.5 at 2.50MHz 80m - Approx 1.0 from 2.00MHz, starts climbing at 3.25MHz but approx 1.1 to 4.00MHz 40m/30m - Approx 1.0 from 5.00MHz, starts climbing at 9.25MHz (1.2), 10.00MHz (1.5), 10.8MHz (1.2), dips at 11.00MHz (1.0) and climbs again 11.26MHz (1.2) and 11.36MHz (1.5) 20m/17m - Approx 1.0 from 13.40MHz, starts climbing at 15.00MHz (1.05), 15.50MHz (1.18), 16.00MHz (1.2), 16.50MHz (1.35), past 17.00MHz over 1.5 15m/12m/10m - Approx 1.5 from 20.00MHz to 25MHz, dips 25.50MHz (1.2), 26.00MHz (1.15), 26.50MHz (1.0), stays down and rises at 28.00MHz (1.2), 28.50MHz (1.2), 29.00MHz (1.5) Has anyone else scanned the filters in this fashion, especially for a KPA delivering full output power/ If so, what were the results, ie I'm looking to see what is considered normal. [Elecraft] Low KPA100 Output
Hi Don, Thanks for yoor previous comments re the low output power from my KPA100. I have checked all low pass filter components and they are fine. RE: [Elecraft] RE: K2 and KPA 100- How Is Hi Current Generated
Hi Jim, Good question. While I have been troubleshooting the KPA I have left the KAT100 out of circuit - I don't need it while transmitting into a dummy load. The AT-200 has a straight through mode for power measurement that I am using. I only borrowed the AT-200 for power meter as the KAT100 is excellent :). [Elecraft] RE: K2 and KPA 100- How Is Hi Current Generated
Hi Don, Thanks for your reply. First the easy answers: I'm using two dummy loads, the primary one being an old fashioned tubular carbon resistor - about half an inch across and two inches long. Both show a flat response across the spectrum when scanned with an MFJ-259 analyzer. I'm using the power meter built into a Kenwood AT-200 Antenna Tuner to measure power. I use a KAT100 as a tuner though. The AT-200 handbook claims it has plus/minus 10% accuracy at full scale (20W and 200W) ranges. By the way, I rechecked the K2 power output and its fine 15W at 160M falling to 12 or so at 10m. KPA100 low pass filters were swept with MFJ259 as described in manual and by you. I used a 51 ohm resistor. Sweeps on other bands seemed OK 1:1.1 and 1:1.2. My concern re high SWR on 30m and 10m was that the KPA100 might reduce power if it detected SWR greater than 1.5, but I wasn't sure where this would be detected. I'll need to recheck LPF components values, but believe they were OK. Still, I wouldn't be the first person on the reflector to have misplaced confidence ;). I'll also try spreading the torroid coils. Do you have any suggestion on which torroid to start with, ie one closest to antenna, or tx or the one in the middle? I had fixed the HI Current warning by resetting R26/27 and adjusting bias, but still wasn't getting the specified power out. Reading back through the archives there was a suggestion that when setting R26 you should change the power output each time (to reset the ALC). I did a bit of this but can't recollect if I did it every time. Still would failing to do this make much of a difference? Mike VK1KCK K2 #2599 > -Original Reply- Mike, How are you measuring power out? and how good is your dummy load? (check it with your antenna analyzer) - that will get the first things out of the way for us. OK, you said you swept the KPA100 low pass filters for 30 through 10 and found them OK, (well, you found 1.5 or less and I would expect 1.2 or 1.3, but you will have to tell me how you set up for the sweep before I draw any conclusions). What do the sweeps for 160 through 40 meters show? If you do the sweep as above, you should find the SWR 1.2 or below in most cases - if not, look carefully at your toroids (count the turns) and triple check the capacitor values. I have found on occasion that the SWR on 10 meters can be reduced a bit by judicious spreading/compressing the turns of the 10/12/15 meter LPF, but the other bands fall into place without any 'tweaking'. In any case, such 'tweaking' will not improve the KPA100 power output, but will allow the base K2 to drive through the high power LPF a bit easier when at the QRP levels. Bottom line here - such 'tweaking' will not solve whatever problem you have. I doubt that the new capacitors will solve this particular problem either - indeed you may end up installing the new capacitors, but if you have a problem with 160 through 40 meters, the capacitors are not likely to fix it. The bias control setting on the KPA100 will not produce the symptoms you describe either - yes it will affect the current drawn by the KPA100, but remembere that the HI-CUR indication means that the base K2 is drawing too much current (it is being asked to produce more power than the current limit will allow) 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I've just spent the day fine tuning my KPA100 - measuring the output power > on each band and trying to improve it. [Elecraft] K2 and KPA 100- How Is Hi Current Generated
Hi All, I've just spent the day fine tuning my KPA100 - measuring the output power on each band and trying to improve it. Initially I was getting a HI Current warning on each of the bands from 160 through to 40 (all into a dummy load), but not on the rest. In all cases the maximum power I could get out on each band was 50-65W. I reset R26/R27 and the bias current and now the HI Current warning has gone and power output has improved on most bands to 70+W, but is not yet 100W. Some observations and questions that came up: Can someone please explain to me how the HI Current warning is generated? Is it likely that my bias current is a little low? I swept the low pass filters with an antenna analyser and the SWR on 30m and 10m is about 1.5. All the components look to be right, and I feel that spreading or compressing the turns on the applicable torroids may upset the associated filters. Is 1.5 too high (I have the previous version of the KPA100 firmware)? Is the new KPA Capacitor mod likely to help? If the product's manual is at Rev B, then the errata sheet will show rev B. After that, the number is the sequence number for the sheet. If it is the first errata for the rev B manual, it will be B-1. Hopefully there won't be many errors, and we will catch them all in the first sheet. If not, then the second one will list all changes (making it cumulative). When we issue the next version of the manual (Rev C in this case) it should catch all the errata, and so those sheets will go away. Should the Rev C manual later need a change, it would be labeled C-1... [Elecraft] Off Topic But I Couldn't Resist
Hi John, It may seem strange to get some advice from a VK1 re the Bitterroot Valley! I lived in Seattle from 2000 to 2003. In 2000 I read a newspaper article re the re-introduction of Grizzly Bears to the Bitterroot. This sparked my imagination because it implied that the area would probably be remote and beautiful. I reorganized our family's August 2000 summer holiday, a 21 day drive from Seattle to Mesa Verde and return through some of the most fantastic (my opinion) country in the USA to include time traveling through the Bitterroot. Sadly when we arrived the whole area was suffering from serious wildfires (what we in Australia call bushfires) and I wasn't prepared to stay in the cabin we had booked with my young children. Also it seemed morally corrupt that we would consider holidaying in an area where the majority of the locals were fighting for their survival. What we did see confirmed my opinion that the area was remote, wild and beautiful. I hope you decide to give it a go but I recommend that you join a local bush fire brigade and help them with their communications. [Elecraft] RE: CW Indicator
Hi Tom, It worked even easier than I thought. Ran Spectrogram with a frequency marker set to my SPOT frequency (600Hz). Tuned the 4.00 MHz birdy with the VFO until it lined up on the frequency marker. Turned on the SPOT and confirmed that the two tones were beating. Then adjusted the CW indicator trim pot until the solid indication came on. Then found the trim pot limits for the solid indication and set the trim pot to the middle of the range. A piece of cake. I can confirm that the indicator works even when upside down compared to the rest of the world. Cheers Mike VK1KCK K2 #2599 PS. If not, how do I adjust the proposed procedure? Makes perfect sense to me! If I absolutely could not (audibly) match the signal against the sidetone, I'd use your method. Using Gram, once yo get the two tones together, turn the sidetone off and use only the received signal... of course, for the K2, it really shouldn't matter since the sidetone's injected elsewhere into the AF Amp, so it should not effect the received signal itself regardless. Once you get it set at 4MHz, see if you can replicate the act with the 7 MHz birdie as well. The weaker signal from the 7 MHz birdie, may allow for a more precise final adjustment... though I'm not certain it's truly required. Please report on your results. RE: [Elecraft] AGC Threshold Adjustment by Changing R1
Hi Bob, I have an A model K2, so R1 was originally installed as a 51K. I removed it and put in a variable and determined on a quiet band, subjectively by ear, where noise with AGC on and off seemed the same. I got different readings each time I did the test, but a mid 40k reading seemed to occur the most often so I went with that. Now trying to see what others got as I'm still not 100% confident. In the world outside the USA this would indeed equate to 47K. The preset has one end strapped to the wiper so would be a continuously variable resistor from in your case 47K down to zero which is in series with the 5.1K in RP6. The preset apparently normally comes out at somewhere near half rotation or in other words about 23 to 25K. Believe the earlier versions of the K2 had a fixed resistor for R1 selected on test (SOT). Not sure of the start value used, though there seemed to be less emphasis on the adjustment then to what is current now to ensure AGC is fully off with no signal. Seems to have been a few reports recently with the resistor at one end though they did not quote which end to know the value. Accordingly, it looks like I only need a handful or resistors and some solder lugs rather than an entire KPA100MODKT to be able to do the KPA100MOD. Can anybody confirm this please? [Elecraft] Re KNB Performance
All, I do not have another radio that I can use to assess KNB2 Performance. I seem to recollect that someone reported poor KNB2 performance due to a defective/zapped component. So maybe there are other reasons for inconsistent assessments. Is there any form of objective test that we can set up to assess KNB2 performance across a number of K2s to help determine if there are common (or unique) factors at work? [Elecraft] K2 MOJO Back in the Box
Hi All, Thanks for the suggestions re recovering from a loss of receive audio. I took all the modules out, put them back and the K2 mojo came back. I'm still baffled about what occurred, but hey I'm not complaining. I finally got around to building the KAT100 over the past week - wow isn't it like magic when you are building an Elecraft kit and the various parts suddenly come together and you can see the end result. For the KAT100 for me this occurred when I bolted the RF board to the front panel. [Elecraft] K2 Help Please re Loss of Rx
Hi, Hopefully someone can help. KPA100 tests went OK so I assembled the amp into the existing K2. All seemed OK but now I have lost Rx on all bands. Problem exists when I re-install old lid and remove all option boards. Yes I know that W1 is removed for 160m board. Shunting this makes no difference. Tests seem to indicate a short across J4 on the K2 RF board. I tried the trick for resetting the relays. In reset Pins 2,3 and 4 are shorted together, Pins 2 and 3 because they should be and I assume Pin 4 through the turns on T4. In reset, the resistance from center conductor of J4 to ground is 1726 ohms (this seems OK through R67 and R68). Is it likely that I have a bad relay? How would I tell? Any other clues? [Elecraft] VCO Relationship with 4 MHz Oscillator
Hi Ron, Thanks for this explanation. Is there an implication here that if you had a more accurate external 4MHz source you could switch it in when you run CAL PLL to get a more accurate result in the look-up table? Mike VK1KCK -- Message: 29 Date: Thu, 25 Nov 2004 20:03:33 -0800 From: "Ron D'Eau Claire" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [Elecraft] VCO relationship with 4 Mhz ocsillator To: 'Jean-Fran?ois M?nard' <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: 'Elecraft - Maling List' Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" That's not the case for the 4 MHz oscillator in the K2, Jean-Frangois. -snip-- When you run CAL PLL, a frequency counter built into the K2 measures the PLL frequency. The K2 applies a tuning voltage to the PLL reference oscillator and notes the frequency measured by the counter. This information is recorded in memory so it can be looked up later. The K2 tunes through the whole range of frequencies the PLL can cover noting the actual frequency measured at regular intervals, and then recording the voltage applied to the reference that will produce the frequency. -snip-- Notice that the accuracy of the readout depends upon how accurately the frequencies and tuning voltages were stored when you ran CAL PLL. That's where the 4 MHz clock and C22 come in. The Control Board 4 MHz clock is the time base for the frequency counter! So the closer it is to 4 MHz the more accurately the K2 will measure the K2 PLL frequency and the more accurately the dial calibration of the K2 will be in use. [Elecraft] Some Questions re Constructing KPA100
Hi All, The last 10 months have flown by settling back into Australia after 4 years in Seattle. At last I have found time to work on the KPA100 that I bought just before I left the US. I have the following few quick comments/questions that I'm hoping someone can confirm/answer (I have a few other questions re parts that I'll send direct to Elecraft): 1 - My SSB MCU is version 1.04. Instructions call for later than version 1.06 (a later version wasn't supplied and I'll talk to Elecraft about that). The question is how essential is a later version and why? 2 - I'm assuming that once you get through the initial construction steps and have installed the new Control Board MCU (In my case version 2.03D replacing version 2.01H) that you can leave the new one in and use the K2 while you continue construction. Is this true? 3 - Also, I read somewhere that all settings are saved in the PROM, so I assume I don't have to re-calibrate anything once the new MCU is installed - is this true? 4 - I received an updated K2IOC (version 1.07). My K2 has a version 1.02. I can't find reference to installing the new K2IOC in the KPA assembly instructions. I assume that I can just install it. Is this true? What extra utility does it provide? 5 - I'm planning to install KPA in external EC2. Should I first install and test it installed in the K2 or are there steps that I can avoid and go straight to installation into the EC2? [Elecraft] Logger 32 and A Networked K2
Hi, I was quite pleased to see that there were a few other K2 owners using Logger32. I searched and tried a few of the freeware loggers for a while before settling on Logger32. It seems to have a similar development model to the K2 - a group of enthusiasts who work together to develop and improve it. For some time now I have been contemplating how to network my K2. A Google enabled search has revealed that there are now several Ethernet to RS-232 converters available on the market including one that has wi-fi ethernet. The price for a standard converter is still high and $US180 was the lowest I found, but this is still cheaper than a dedicated PC. Also, the Taiwanese are now starting to make them, so the price is bound to fall. The wi-fi model is amazing because it opens up the possibility that I could sit anywhere in my house or garden and remotely drive my K2 certainly with ease for say PSK. However, I still have to confirm the legaility of doing this in Australia, and I'm not sure about the USA. Some of the converter companies provide software that somehow redirects commands sent from your PC, normally to a serial COM port to which the K2 is attached, to a TCP/IP address of your choosing ie one that you would specify for the now ethernet connected K2. My first question is: Can any one explain how translation from a serial COM port to an ethernet address works? I guess that in time, people writing software to control K2s will start to build in the option for you to specify a TCP/IP address as well as an RS-232 COM port. My second question is how would I go about taking voice from say a headset and sending it from my PC to an ethernet remoted K2? By the way, I'm now back in Australia and looking forward to demonstrating my trusty K2. I'm giving a presentation to the local club at the end of June on my experience with Amateur Radio in the USA where I hope to do a quick demo of the K2 and then give a dedicated K2 talk as a follow up later on. 73s Mike VK1KCK AC7MZ K2#2599 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post.
