I just experienced that problem today. I was on 12 meters phone and after a couple of words the HI SWR light came on and the KPA shut down. I put it on Standby and put my K3 in CW mode. When I hit the key the SWR on my K3 had only one bar. Then I went to tune position on the KAT and tapped my key and there was all sorts of clicking and the swr bar on the K3 went nuts for a few moments. Then the clicking stopped and the swr was back to one bar and everything worked fine after that. I have no idea what is going on. I'm trying to set up my K3 with HRD and the packet cluster but I need some help. In setting up to connect to my local cluster, HRD calls for a port number. How do I determine what number to use here? [Elecraft] KRX3 no audio
I just installed my new KRX3 and I do not have any audio. There is no hissing sound as there is when I use the main receiver. In the Config menu I have set ANT=BNC as I installed the TMP cable with the BNC connector to allow me to do diversity work later. In BSET I have the ANT set to MAIN. When I tap the SUB button the SUB icon on the screen lights up. SUB RF gain is full clockwise. What setting do I need to set or correct? Is it possible that it isn't plugged in correctly? The two long screws that go through the receiver mated easily with the standoffs below so I don't think it could be displaced. [Elecraft] Soldering station
I just ordered the new KXV3 RXA board for my K3. The instructions state requirements for the soldering station to be used in the installation of the new board. My workshop has never had need for high tech soldering and consequently I do not own a soldering station. I have several assorted soldering irons and guns that have served me well in the past but I guess I will have to join the modern world. Since I would like to keep updating my K3 it looks like I will need to buy a soldering station. In looking through Googled references I see many stations in the $100 and up range. Is it absolutely necessary to spend that much to ensure the safety of my radio or are there some less expensive suitable alternatives? I would like to try RTTY with my new K3 but I know absolutely nothing about setting up for operating. I need a basis to be able to use the instructions in the Owner's Manual. [Elecraft] Another touchdown!
My K3 #560 touched down here several days ago (ordered 27 July) and I am now beginning to educate myself on some its multitude of functions. Just whipped off a couple of quick q's to confirm its operation. The only snag I had in setting it up was on 60 meters where I could only get up to 0.5 watts. A quick call to Elecraft had me do the tx gain calibration on 5.375 mhz and that problem was resolved. This former teacher will now resume the fun filled learning process. [Elecraft] Proset with Kenwood?
I just received the Heil Proset from Elecraft. When my K3 arrives I plan to use the headset with the K3. Since I expect a rather long wait until my K3 arrives I am wondering if the headset can be used with my current TS-940 radio. The earphones work but I don't want to try the microphone until I am sure it is compatible with the 940. The mike plug is physically proper but I can't find a wiring diagram for the headset so I'm not sure about the electrical correctness. I'm looking into buying a headset for the eventual arrival of my K3. There is a regular ad in QST for an outfit in California that looks interesting. It is Warren Gregoire Associates and I wonder if anyone in the group has any knowledge of how well this unit performs. If the Heil headset is head and shoulders above this one I could wait and get it later but if this one would be adequate I'd consider it now. [Elecraft] Microphone adapter
In reading the online version of the owner's manual I came across an item that seems incorrect. There is mention on page 26 of an 8 pin to 3.5-mm adapter cable for use in connecting a microphone to the rear of the K3. The text refers to a later page (42) which gives the impression that more information about the cable will be found there but I can find no mention of the cable on that page. [Elecraft] Small radio
I just read an article describing a radio that makes the Elecrafts look gigantic. Researchers have made a working radio from a single carbon nanotube that is 10,000 times smaller than a human hair. It consists of an antenna, a tunable filter, an amplifier and a demodulator and is powered by a battery. It has been used to broadcast a couple of songs. For those of the group concerned about knob size, they don't mention anything about the knobs.
