[Elecraft] K2 problem: no tx output on 15 and 17m
Any advice please? My K2 suddenly lost tx output on 15 and 17 (actually still a tiny amount - less than a watt). Still receiving OK on those bands. I removed the 100w amp and the problem relates to the K2 barefoot. There is common circuitry on these bands - any suggestions where to start checking pl? [Elecraft] K3 reliability
I hesitate to join this discussion but it seems inevitable that the more K3 are around, the greater chance the odd one has a problem . Can only speak from my own experience - I have two - assembled both. The older one (#228) has about 100,000 Qs on the clock and has been to and from Africa in my hand luggage on the following trips without incident. My home K3 (#1848) is also living a charmed trouble-free life. Elecraft support has been great - even to the odd stupid e mail from Africa when I have got muddled up! My main criticism - pile up performance under certain condx -seems to have been sorted with the latest firmware upgrade. [Elecraft] K3 and KPA500
When I attach the aux cable from the KPA500 to K3 I lose audio in one ear and the speaker is no longer muted. As soon as I remove the aux cable all returns to normal. Applies to front and rear phone connection. Speaker setting is on SPKR + PH NO Have probably changed a setting but can't see where or how. Have had problem with Acom tripping on semi-break in CW. Seem to have solved it by increasing Vox delay but not totally convinced. [Elecraft] K2 Problems
Looking for some help please. My K2 has developed some distortion on received signals and without warning the internal speaker (and the external speaker jack) failed to work when turned on -- although headphones still work. [Elecraft] K3 not transmitting anymore
Just felt that a word of reassurance may be worthwhile. My older K3 (#228) has now worked about 35000 QSOs in Africa with appalling power problems - switching off the rig before the PSU would be a luxury indeed. Also losing power while transmitting has been quite frequent (and unavoidable). The K3 appears to be brilliantly able to cope with such misfortunes - and it is equally good at shutting down if something goes adrift. [Elecraft] K3 Case screws rusting
I also found all the countersunk case screws rusted after about 4 days in Sierra Leone last October - very humid country of course. I repainted them when I got home. Elecraft are brilliant in responding to customers' wishes/needs so I wonder if I am alone in wanting a little time to let current developments and firmware upgrades show their worth? I have just taken my soldering to my two K3s to install upgrades (and then upgraded the firmware). However I looked at the latest beta firmware and feel I am slightly on a treadmill. I am very happy to wait say every six months and then pick up any Elecraft firmware changes. I know I am free to do this but I have the feeling that some requests for change are very individualistic and may well not reflect the views of the majority of K3 users. Time for reflection isn't always wasted. [Elecraft] K3 SSB on 40M
Can't get proper output on 40M SSB. Rig works fine on all other bands. On 40M gives full output on CW but when switched to SSB although the Comp and ALC readings are OK (i.e.as for all other bands) but there is very little RF output. Can't think of anything which is specific to 40M which I have switched on or off. Just to record thanks to Elecraft for great service. Had a big problem with control from the front panel. Rather than prolong diagnosis and my attempts to cure the problem, Gary sent me a new front panel board which arrived here in UK in four working days. I have just started to notice a click and a very small jump in frequency every 5 kHz on my K2. For example I find it on 30M: 10105.78 10110.78 10115.78 10120.87 (etc) on 40M it appears: 7034.3 7029.93 7024.93 (etc) Is this something that has always been there which I have just noticed ? I can work round it but would prefer not to. [Elecraft] K3 Firmware - help!
After no previous trouble, I had slight problem since installing 1.96/1.73 - when first switched on, tuning seemed to cause disconnection of all signals - no problem after a few seconds. Now - have just lost everything - stuck on one band, no signals, buttons do not work for their assigned purpose and can't get access to menu. My K2 has developed a very small amount of play on the pot (R5) used for RIT/XIT. Replacement is obviously a possibility (but not sure it is worth trying to do doing that yet). I am sorting out my K2/100 which had an unhappy experience with a thunderstorm in 5x two weeks ago. Thanks for helpful comments. Almost there but I am doing the power calibration. I adjust R26 to get the K2 and my power meter reading the same. All goes OK until I get to about 10W when I Get Hi Curr and the rig draws a lot more current e.g. from1.8A to 3.8A. I could stay with 10W for ever (probably enough to drive the linear) but this is not how it was. Seems more of a problem on 40M than other bands. Had a great time in 5X with my K2 until the day when the lightning finally got it. There is now no output from the 100W PA - although the rest of the rig seems OK. Having a great time with my K3 (#228) which I mainly use for CW. However on SSB (2.7 filter) I find it tends to ring - even more so with DSP (speaker and headphones). Gary sent me a very fast and helpful e-mail and I have found that trial and error adjustment of FL FRQ makes an improvement - but it still tends to resonate slightly. Is it the xtal filter (would the 2.8 be better?). Is it anno domini and my hearing ? (unlikely as I was only licenced in 1963). [Elecraft] K2 IF Amplifier alignment
Meanwhile back with K2 #5942) I am realigning my K2 (had to tighten up the amp devices anyway) I was never very happy with the IF Amp alignment (P64) when I first built it. There does not seem to be a clear peak on L34 adjustment - just a general area where it seems to be highest. I am using another rig on LP into a dummy load as a signal source - I can hear the internal 7000 MHz signal but it doesn't seem to peak particularly.. My one comment about the K2 is that it seems a little short on gain (but OK with the DSP). Do I have a problem with the IF amp alignment or my experience the same as others please? Looking for reassurance please. KPA100 almost complete but testing Q1 and Q2 base to ground - measures 11.5 ohms - just outside the parameters given in the instruction book page 43 (12-16 ohms). [Elecraft] KPA100 - Fitting PC to Heat sink
I am trying to fit the PC to the heat sink but there is not a neat match of set screws to holes in the PC. No problems in screwing the set screws into the heat sinks (i.e. certainly not cross-threaded) but there is a tiny mismatch. I am very very reluctant to use any force (and I have to get it back off anyway). Anyone else have this problem and any suggestions? When I first transmit (CW or SSB) I get High Current shown. It disappears immediately and does not return - until the next time I turn the rig off and back on. Is this normal or should I be concerned? [Elecraft] K2 Frequency adjustment
Got my K2 on the air on CW and SSB and many thanks to those who have helped me. I now need to get the frequency reading accurately - cannot hear WWV here (today at least) so would appreciate advice on simple means of adjusting C22 accurately. Currently the K reads 0.28 KHz high compared to my FT2000. Second point - just installed NB - I seem to have more noise with the preamp than previously even when off. Does this observation ring any bells or is it my paranoid imagination? Thanks again - esp to Elecraft who got a noise generator kit to me in 6 days over the Easter break - pretty good for Ca to UK. [Elecraft] K2 filter adjustment- frequency
Just about finished building and got the first watts out of my K2. However I need some advice please 1. If I tune to a carrier on F1 (ie filter position 1), at the same pitch it is 1 KHz higher on F2,F3 and F4 (which are all the same) Presume this is about BFO adjustment but can't see where to go. Any advice please - apologies in advance as I think this is probably a pretty simple mistake by me!. 2. I find that tuning L1, L2 ,L3 and L4 is very broad - no very obvious peak? Got watts coming out the back but no QSOs - I find that the transmit freq is more than 1 KHz lower than receive(which is about 2 KHz lower than the digital display. Can't find anything on the site to help but yet again sure I am doing something stupid. Grateful for advice please(I have now finished building the K2 - now just trying to make it work. [Elecraft] UK - PSU and Amp
My K2 has just got to the 7 MHz receive stage so can't really comment yet but I have used both the Watson Power Mite and the Watson W25 SM extensively in wanderings portable round Africa and both performed well. I checked them both for spurious noise and drew a blank - use them at full cable stretch and with a filtered lead. They seemed OK on both IC7000 and FT857 and I checked out the Power Mite particularly carefully for noise on my main rig as I was rather suspicious of something so small! [Elecraft] K2 Filter settings
Thrilled to get my K2 working on 7 MHz receive but I seem to have a problem with filter settings. Everything has checked out according to the book - no problems at all (even my home-wound coils seem to work!!) I have set up the filters exactly according to pages 88 and 89. On Filter 1 the rx sounds great - plenty of gain, clean signals. On the other 3 filters it sounds like I am listening through a dense fog - I can tell the bandwidth is far narrower than F1 but signals are weak and it sounds as if the filters are overlapping each other (if you know what I mean). I have checked settings again and all look OK. Does anyone recognise this problem please? [Elecraft] K2 Pre-amp and att
Seem to have a problem. Most gain is with no pre-amp (sounds fine). Some attenuation with att on and more attenuation with pre-amp on. Have checked out T6 - seems soldered OK. Any thoughts please? [Elecraft] AGC - K2 #5942
Interested in the posts on this. I am now working on the RF board but at the Part 1 test I was only able to get 3.8v with R1 flat out - can reduce volts but not increase. Was very grateful for the quick response from Elecraft to an e mail on the topic but these recent posts make me wonder whether I will have a problem with no opportunity to increase voltage. [Elecraft] Coil winding novice
I am just starting on my K2 and feeling apprehensive about coil winding - never having wound a toroidal coil.My inclination is to wind them myself rather than give way and buy a set. It all looks straightforward in the instruction manual.
