Re: [Elecraft] Lead time

2008-05-20 Thread Nick Kennedy
I'm not sure I get it. When I ordered my K3, I carefully counted out
the projected 4 months plus a couple weeks extra to get it in time for
Field Day. This was the lead time for new orders given on the web site.
But I'm looking at probably 5 months. Yet the projection continued to
be 4 months from then until now.

I'm smiling and stoic, and I understand the difficulty in making a firm
prediction, but what is the difference between that projection and the
current one?

Hi Jim,

The lead time on the web site is for new orders, not for ones placed
4-5 months ago (which is being tracked by everyone so diligently ;-) .

We are continually ramping up our production rate on a weekly basis.
We are definitely producing now at a sustained rate higher than we
were 3-4 months ago, and our plans in place are for this to increase
another 50-75% over the summer.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supply for K3 ?

2008-02-24 Thread Nick Kennedy
I ordered a K3 just recently. I plan to use my MFJ-4225MV supply, which
I like a lot. It's quiet, but the fan does run all the time.

I understand the K3 fan or fans are very quiet. That makes me want to
consider quieting down the fan in my MFJ P/S. I don't like any
unnecessary fan sound, however quiet. I think I read somewhere that the
fan in this supply runs more than necessary. I may do some temperature
checks on heat sinks and add some sort of control to the fan.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Msg send

2016-04-25 Thread Nick Kennedy

Yes, FAST PLAY is great. I used it on QRPTTF.

Barry's request #2 is high on my list too. For K3 and KX3. Repeating:

2. When in message repeat mode, allow for a single paddle dit to silently
terminate repeat mode (without actually transmitting or generating
sidetone). This would allow you to copy someone answering your CQ without
missing a beat.

[Elecraft] K3 'SHIFT' not functional

2016-06-22 Thread Nick Kennedy
Hi All,

My K3’s ‘SHIFT’ control no longer shifts. It stays at the CW pitch frequency
I’ve dialed up as indicated by “FC *0.44”, for example, when I turn the knob.

I had been setting up the rig for Field Day (taking out macros, etc.) when this
occurred.

This is happening in the CW mode. In fact, I just verified that SHIFT works
normally in SSB and AM modes. The WIDTH control works normally as well.

Searching the manual, it seems that using XFIL can disable SHIFT. Maybe I
accidentally hit XFIL. But if I did, how do I go back to normal? When I
rotate the WIDTH control, my filters are sequenced in and out as expected.

No CAT is currently connected.

At least it’s not fatal, but it would be nice to get the function back before
Saturday.

You are quite right, Vic. It amazes me that I didn't know that since I've
used QRQ from day 1 and thought I used SHIFT as well.

Currently, it's a direct CONFIG menu entry CW QRQ and select ON or OFF.

Check to see if QRQ mode is set. It locks out the shift function. If there
is a little plus sign on the right side of the display in CW mode then
that's it.
To turn it off, go to the CONFIG menu, CW WEIGHT and tap one of the number
keys. I don't recall which, but you can find it in the manual.

[Elecraft] K3 macro for TEXT DEC On/Off?

2015-03-17 Thread Nick Kennedy
Is there a way to write a macro for one-button switching of receive text decode
on and off? I like to use text decode while QSOing or monitoring, but when
that’s not happening, I’d rather have the display doing something useful
instead of showing E E E E T T E T, etc.

I looked at the programming reference and the Help in the K3 utility. I see
how to simulate holding the button, but if it’s possible to feed the rig the
parameter for OFF-TX ONLY-RX slow speeds and RX-high speeds, I haven’t seen the
method.

About an hour later I get an email from the moderator telling me I'm banned

Johnny Siu VR2XMC told me he has been banned from posting on the group for

So be careful on the KX3 Yahoo Group. Somehow I will suffer through this

Re: [Elecraft] SWR Readings:Differences

2014-09-03 Thread Nick Kennedy
SWR meters don't generally tell you the SWR on the line they're connected
to, except in special cases. That's independent of the line losses
discussion.

If the SWR on the line is other than 1:1 and you move the meter along the
line, the indicated SWR will change but the actual SWR on the line does not
change. Again, independent of line losses.

[Elecraft] A or B?

2021-07-08 Thread Nick Kennedy
I think the definitions of Mode A and Mode B are a little soft. I've taken
it (mode B) as having element insertion when a paddle is tapped with the
opposite paddle closed. For example, if I'm sending a string of dashes and
I tap and release the dot paddle while one of the dashes is being sent, do
I get a dot after the current dash or not?

With my K3, it's Yes in both mode A and mode B. With other mode A keyers
I've checked, it's No.

I guess it's true that most manufacturers tend to have mode B, but my
FT-991A offers both mode A and mode B. It also has mode Y, whatever that
is. Maybe Y for Yaesu.

[Elecraft] K3 small rotary encoder replacement

2021-08-04 Thread Nick Kennedy
I'm in the process of replacing the four encoders to the left of the main
VFO knob and wonder if anyone has any advice or pep talks to offer.

The encoders in my summer 2008 vintage K3 degraded to the point where they
often count backwards, making adjustment of CW speed or power out difficult.

I've purchased four replacements from Elecraft and have been working up my
courage and taking deep breaths. Getting to the board is a fairly
complicated first phase. I had an Elecraft document on installation of an
audio LPF on the DSP board and found it to be very useful in this process.
Of course the original assembly manual is also useful.

Now I've got the K3 apart to the point of allowing access. The upper two
encoders have terminals located beneath an LED mounting board and are
almost impossible to access from the top. I may stop after replacing the
lower two, assuming I'm successful with them.

My usual method involves solder wick plus flux. Sometimes I find ChipQuik
to be very helpful in allowing me to remove a part without getting rid of
all the solder. In this case though, using ChipQuik would require heating
seven joints simultaneously which I haven't been able to do.

There's also an issue with mounting the encoder at the correct height so
the shaft switch can be operated. So I'll try to match the height of the
new shaft end to that of the existing encoders.

I found one website which is somewhat helpful discussing this task:

https://www.n5na.net/s9y/index.php?/archives/26-Replacing-Elecraft-K3-Push-Button-Encoders.html

I'm keeping a lot of notes. Anyone planning to attempt this job is welcome
to them.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 small rotary encoder replacement

2021-08-05 Thread Nick Kennedy
No, my pins are tin plated I think. Recently I replaced some power pins
with gold plated ones per Elecraft's recommendation after getting an ERR
12V message and losing power to the 100 W amplifier.

When my K3 was less than a year old (June 2009) I had a lot of indications
going crazy and Elecraft replaced the front board under warranty. No
problems since then. I suspected the problem was tin whiskers but couldn't
be sure.

And now back to the encoder replacements.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 small rotary encoder replacement

2021-08-06 Thread Nick Kennedy
To close the loop, I finally finished installing the encoders and
reassembling my K3. It still works! And the encoder action is smooth.

I just did the SPEED/MIC and CMP/PWR encoders. Should I decide to attempt
the other two, I'd probably get a better desoldering scheme than I have now.

[Elecraft] K3 - HI RFI alarm

2021-11-03 Thread Nick Kennedy
I've had my K3 since around 2007 and recently have started getting a HI RFI
message on the LCD while operating CW and using my AL-811 amplifier at
about 500 W.

It seems odd since when I'm "key down" my antenna should not be connected
to the receiver.

I'm not using QSK. I have a bit of delay to keep the amplifier's T/R relay
from operating between characters.

I don't have a separate antenna connected.

I've run 100 W or QRP most of my ham life but for the past five or more
years I've occasionally used the AL-811 and had no issues until recently.

My antennas are a 134' EFHW inverted L and an 88' dipole fed with ladder
line via a Johnson Matchbox.

CW SS is coming up. I'd like to use the amp but worrying about my receiver
may be distracting.

Anyone seen this?
