Re: [Elecraft] CM-500

2020-11-03 Thread Paul Ferguson

I found it rather difficult to install replacement ear pads on the
CM-500. It seemed I did not have enough hands to hold all the parts
together when trying to align things and reinstall the 3 screws.

This article "Replacement Ear Pads for the CM500 Headset" by - Mike
N4CF in the May 2020 PVRC newsletter worked well for me:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 button problem question

2010-04-19 Thread Paul Ferguson
Thanks to Harry, WE1X, for letting me know of a similar button problem he had.
It is most likely my problem is not caused by the components I suspected, but
rather by the failure of the switch inside the encoder for Speed/Mic.

I was thinking only of the rubber-covered buttons, which cannot result in a
ground out. However the four encoders containing push switches can fail by
putting a ground out to a scan line. There were a few failures on early
encoders, and Elecraft now uses encoders from a different source. I sent my
front panel board back for repair.

73,
Paul
K5ESW

Seven of my front panel buttons do not function on K3 #757. I also used the
Switch Test to see that they give no scan codes. All other buttons work OK.

Looking at the the schematic for the Front Panel - Switches I see these
 seven
buttons are all connected to the SCANADC0 line into U3. I took off the front
panel and put an ohmmeter from ground to the SCANADC0 line, and it gives a few
ohms. The other lines (SCANADC1-7) show as open.

I looks like either U3, C30, or R27 is bad. Does anyone see any other
 possibilities?

I don't relish replacing U3 since it is a 16-pin IC. Maybe some Chip-Quik or
tiny cutters to snip the leads would ease the job.

[Elecraft] K3 Check Your Buttons

2009-09-23 Thread Paul Ferguson
I own K3 #757 and recently noticed some of the front panel buttons were not
working. They either did not work at all or gave strange results. I contacted
support, and they advised me to use the Config Menu SW Test to check all
buttons.

If you have not tried it, go to Config Menu, rotate VFO B until the SW test
entry is selected. Rotate VFO A until Sca Adc is selected. Now press every
button, one at a time, except the Power button. When you press and hold a
button, you will see the buttonĀ“s row and column codes displayed as a single
digit followed by 3 digits. As you hold each button pressed, the code should
remain stable. Note the Band and Mode buttons have different codes for pressing
the left or right sides. Also the 4 encoders to the left of VFO A (Shift,
Width, Speed/Mic, Cmp/Pwr) have scan codes when pressed.

When I tried the test, some of my buttons produced flickering codes or code
values jumping around. Support advised me to push the suspect buttons down
firmly and move my fingertip around as I pressed down. This seemed to help, but
I am still showing a few problems.

I checked with a friend owning a K3. He tested his buttons and found the last
digit of Fine and Rate flicker. Support said a slight flicker of 1-2 digits is
OK. Most of them should be steady at one reading.

My K3 is out of warranty. Options are buying a new Front Panel board at about
$400 or sending the Front Panel to Elecraft for repair at the standard hourly
rate. I am going to monitor the problem for a while and see if there is some
pattern to the failures.

You may want to test all your buttons. I had never tested them before and I
might have noticed a problem before the warranty expired. It is also a good
idea to test the buttons when you think you are chasing a different problem. My
original symptom was the RX button would not switch to the receive antenna. I
even tried reloading the firmware before realizing multiple buttons were not
working.

 Hi again Pete:

I forgot to mention something in my previous posting. Lyle gave me a command
to send via the K3 Utility to temporarily increase the headphone volume. The
premise being that if this proved satisfactory then it would be possible to
include such a volume adjustment in firmware (if enough people want it).
Open the K3 Utility and choose Command Tester. Enter the following code on
the top line and hit enter

 !66;

Be sure to include all 4 characters. You can do this several times and the
volume will increase slightly each time. Unfortunately, it is not remembered
 if you cycle power.

Re: [Elecraft] Question on KRX3 Installation

2009-07-17 Thread Paul Ferguson
In errata C-7 dated March 15, 2009, page 1, there are instructions to
cut two traces in the area to the right of D40 on the RF board.

Shouldn't the above change be a mod mentioned on the K3 Enhancements and
Application Notes info maintained on the Elecraft Website?

I installed the KRX3 before the errata was issued. I used the mods page to
update my K3, but missed the change because it is not on the mods page.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Load fails

2009-06-19 Thread Paul Ferguson
Dick,

Sorry, I gave you the error message when I tried to go back to 3.14. The proper
files seem to be in each folder. When I try to load 3.19, I get:

-
FPF firmware file hfpf0101.hex verified
Erasing flash memory
Sending firmware file hfpf0101.hex to FPF
Send FPF firmware failed at load address x0300
GetLastError returns 0xe212 NACK retry limit has been exhausted state 30
FPF firmware load failed

Files in my 3.19 folder:
DTBL0009.HEX
HAUX0217.HEX
HDSP0217.HEX
hfpf0101.hex
hfwnotes.rtf
hmcu0319.hex

Files in my 3.14 folder:
DTBL0009.HEX
HAUX0216.HEX
HDSP0216.HEX
hfpf0100.hex
hfwnotes.rtf
hmcu0314.hex

Additional info -- this morning one attempt did get past the FPF load although
there were some retry and fill messsages. The load then failed on DSP2:

-
DSP2 firmware file TBOOT7.HEX verified
DSP2 firmware file HAUX0217.HEX verified
DSP2 firmware file DTBL0009.HEX verified
Sending firmware file TBOOT7.HEX to DSP2
GetLastError returns 0xe213 K3 is not responding state 30
DSP2 firmware load failed
-

I retried and did not get past the FPF load. Should I contact K3 support?

73,
Paul
K5ESW

What files are in your firmware folder that contains MCU revision 3.19?

It should have hfpf0101.hex as well as hmcu0319.hex, hdsp0217.hex,
haux0217.hex, dtbl0009.hex and tboot7.hex. The fact that your error message
says it's trying to load hfpf0100 (.hex) suggests that you've got
hmcu0319.hex and hfpf0100.hex but not hfpf0101.hex in the firmware folder
you're loading from. You need the most recent hfpf0101.hex in the same
firmware folder that you are loading MCU version 3.19 from.

This is what I mean by mixing. The beta firmware zip firmware file
contains a complete set of firmware files. All those files need to be in the
 firmware folder you're loading from.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Load fails

2009-06-19 Thread Paul Ferguson
Dick,

Thanks. You were correct about the problem. I have a short (3 ft) extender
cable connected to the KUSB cable. The junction between the two was slightly
loose. I tightened it and loaded OK.

I suspected the K3 because the MCU load always worked. It must be that the FPF
load exercised the data lines differently enough to show up the problem.

Thanks to you and others for the help.

73,
Paul
K5ESW

It sounds like you can eventually load, although there is evidence of
 substantial communications corruption.

What sort of cable do you use between the PC and the K3? USB? Hubs
involved? Is it screwed down at the K3 end? If you have alternate cables
available, could you try one of those? If you have several USB ports on
your computer, could you try a different one?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Load fails

2009-06-18 Thread Paul Ferguson
I don't think I am mixing anything.

I have a folder for 3.14 and one for the new Beta 3.19. When I get ready to do
a load, I see what is now installed in my K3 before I Send All Firmware to
K3.

After trying to load 3.19 it says Installed in the K3: MCU = 03.19, FPF = N/A,
DSP1 = 02.16, DSP2 = 0219, DVR = 01.03. Available: MCU = 03.19, FPF = 01.01,
DSP1 = 02.17, DSP2 = 02.17.

This seems to be what would be expected if the load failed and my I previously
had a good 3.14 firmware load.

When I try to reload from my 3.14 folder, I end with MCU = 03.14 and FPF =
N/A. This seems what I would expect if the MCU load works and the FPF load
aborts.

73,
Paul

As I recall there is a new FPF version that you may need to put into
the same firmware folder as your new MCU version.

 Dint try to mix...

[Elecraft] K3: Error in KRX3 installation instructions?

2008-10-10 Thread Paul Ferguson
I am in the middle of installing my KRX3 and came to a point where I do not
have enough of the correct screws remaining. I am using KRX3 Installation and
Operation manual Rev B (Aug 20, 2008) and Errata Rev B-2 (Sep 30, 2008).

My inventory matched the manual as modified by the Errata. I might have used
the wrong screws somewhere, so I went back thru the steps keeping track of what
the steps say I should have used.

I came to a problem on page 31, step 2. It calls for two 4-40 3/16 zinc pan
head screws. The inventory does not list any of the above screws. There are
zinc pan head 4-40, 1/4 and black pan head 4-40 3/16 screws. I do not know if
I used zinc 1/4 or black 3/16 during this step. What should this step say?

[Elecraft] 500 Hz filter measurement?

2008-08-26 Thread Paul Ferguson
 W4ZV wrote:
You only need the two -6 dB points, which can be measured to a resolution of
1 Hz and 0.1 dB using the internal AFV/dBV function. You should set AGC Off
and ensure WIDTH (i.e. the DSP BW) is than the filter you are
measuring...otherwise you're measuring the combination of XFIL plus DSP. I
do this by disabling all filters except the one under test and setting WIDTH
XFIL BW. Once you have the two -6 dB points, then you can figure how
much offset to enter so these two points are equidistant about the center.

I used the above procedure to test my 500 Hz filter. The offset printed on the
filter is -0.82 kHz. Testing shows the center frequency to be about 43 Hz low
when using the above offset. I put -0.78 KHz in the filter configuration, and
it tests centered now.

The -6 dB bandwidth measured about 480 Hz. I have seen the nominal -6dB
bandwidth of the 500 Hz filter listed as 565 Hz. When I am measuring the
bandwidth, I have the DSP bandwidth set to 2.8 KHz. Since the DSP filter is
fairly wide, I would not expect the cascading to have much affect on the Xtal
filter bandwidth measurement. Is it likely my Xtal filter is as narrow as
measurement shows or is it more likely something is wrong with my testing?

Here is info about the test setup:
  PITCH = 600
  AGC = off
  Mode = CW
  Only 500 Hz filter enabled
500 HZ filter Offset set to -0.82 KHz
  DSP BW = 2.80
RX EQ = reset to 0 for all EQ bands
Center freq on K3 determined using CWT and Spot
Sig source = HP sig generator at 50 microvolts

Re: [Elecraft] Problems using a QRO amp with the K3

2008-07-13 Thread Paul Ferguson
I have a QRO Technologies HF-2000 amp. I am keying it with a K3 thru the amp's
+15V Key Xmit input port, but I have a homebrew transistor circuit between
the K3 and the amp to supply +12V to this input.

The other amp keying port is called Key Xmit. It needs only a contact closure
able to handle 80ma. However the open circuit voltage measured at this port is
about 150V. When I had a different transceiver, I was concerned about the high
open circuit voltage. I built the interface to allow use the +15V Key Xmit
port and avoid any damage to the transceiver relay.

Maybe this high open circuit voltage is the cause of the problem with the K3
trying to key the amp?

Anyone out there using a QRO with the K3? I can't seem to get the amp
working with the K3. I have previously used the amp with the 480HX, 1000MP
 and
706 MIIG. I am using the key out circuit on the back which does activate the
relay in the amp but when I release the ptt, the amp stays in transmit and
 will
not release. Before I did use the ALC circuit with the amp but I have been
 told
I do not need to use an ALC circuit with the K3. Do I need a separate t/r
 relay
between the radio and the amp? Is there some other menu item I have
 overlooked?
  Any help will be appreciated.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG and power problems

2008-05-13 Thread Paul Ferguson
I have K3/100 #757 using firmware 1.94 MCU and 1.73 DSP.

I have been getting an ERR TXG message when trying the Transmitter Gain Low-
Power Calibration on most bands. 80 meters was OK and 20 meters sometimes was
OK.

I noticed my external power meter was showing 10 watts output while the K3
power read only 2 watts. This caused me to go back to the K3 Low-Power
Wattmeter Calibration procedure. In this procedure I was only able to adjust
the power shown on my external meter to about 9 watts when the K3 showed 5
watts. The WMTR LP parameter value shown in the VFO A slot ended up at its
maximum value of 180.

I redid the LP Transmitter Gain Calibration on all bands without any ERR TXG
messages. So far so good except for my K3 saying 5 watts out and my meter
saying 9 watts.

Next I try the High Power TX Gain Calibration. I get ERR TXG messages, so I
take a look at my external power meter as I increase power. As the K3 changes
from 12 to 13 watts, I hear the KPA3 relay click, and my external power meter
shows power suddenly jumps from about 15 watts to 40 watts. Increasing K3 power
more gets me 100 watts out while the K3 is showing only 20 watts. I then try
the High Power Wattmeter Calibration. K3 is set to 50 watts. My external meter
shows 120 watts, but adjusting the menu parameter does not reduce power.

I am using two different external power meters. One is a QRP meter and goes to
10 watts max. The other has a 200-watt scale. They both have seemed fairly
accurate from using them with other rigs.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

[Elecraft] K3 ERR TXG message on most bands

2008-05-10 Thread Paul Ferguson
I have K3/100 #757 using firmware 1.88 MCU and 1.70 DSP.

When trying the Low-Power (5W) Transmitter Gain Calibration, it works on 80 and
20 meters, but on all other bands I get an ERR TXG message.

The Synthesizer Calibration and Reference Oscillator Calibration (using WWV
zero beat) run OK.

I have checked that I have my two filters (500 and 2.7) setup properly. I have
been thru the filter bandwidth, freq center, receive filter enables, and
transmit filter selections several times.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

[Elecraft] K3 KXV3 mods?

2008-03-07 Thread Paul Ferguson
There was going to be a change to the KXV3 RX Ant I/O and Transverter card to
increase protection from RF. The change was going to be cut into production and
a future mod kit offered to owners not having the change.

I have a K3 ordered and am considering adding the KXV3 option. Has the mod been
made already in units now being shipped? If not, I will wait and order it after
the change is included in the boards being shipped.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM

2008-02-24 Thread Paul Ferguson
The reviewer (Solardx) gives the results of a test he ran on his K3. Surely
there are others out there with a K3 and the equipment necessary to repeat his
tests. The outcome of the tests will determine if Solardx's results are
typical.

I await the results while I wait for my K3 (wave 3).

[Elecraft] K3 Filters for the 2nd receiver?

2007-12-12 Thread Paul Ferguson
I plan to use a K3 primarily for DXing. I want the second receiver
option so I can listen for clear spots and stations working the DX in
split operations.

For this usage, can you see any reasons to add additional filters to
the second receiver?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Accessory Connector

2007-08-29 Thread Paul Ferguson

but much more than reliability is the issue of USE-ABILITY. The K3 is
a field radio and under the most remote and demanding condx, anderson
Powerpole and these D thingies are the first frustrations
 UNLESS

For those who think the D and Anderson connectors are such a big
problem, why not just make up a set of short cables. On one end
attach the mating connectors required for the K3. On the other end,
attach the connector meeting your requirement.
