Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power-hunting on FT8

2023-07-20 Thread Paul Maciel
Hi Peter,

Setting the ALC for FT8 is different than other transceivers due to the way the
K3 adjusts power.

You should adjust the slider to give four solid bars and the fifth flickering.
You find the outputvwull be ver stable then.

See you on the bands!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

2020-10-06 Thread Paul Maciel

Hi Steve,

Yes, I would like to see this.  I no longer even bother installing the
internal batteries but just carry along a Bioenno pack.

I have not heard of any 3rd party solutions.

The KX3 is my favorite of my HF radios right now. But one of my
annoyances is the internal battery limitations.

I always wind up carrying an external 6_Ah or 10_Ah LiFePo4 battery
into the field when I use this radio, an external charge controller,
and solar panel. It's not a big problem, but it also should not be a
big project to improve this situation. The KXBC3 has enough real
estate to include a lithium battery charger, and even a solar charge
controller in its space. The amount of battery energy that could fit
in-place of the NiMH cells could approximately triple the capacity of
the AA cells.

So I have these questions:

1) How many of you out there might buy an upgrade which replaces the
KXBC3 board with a lithium battery manager, and a associated battery
pack?

2) Are there any 3rd parties already making anything like this?

Re: [Elecraft] New K1 Kit

2019-06-06 Thread Paul Maciel

Hi Grant,

There certainly were a lot more than a handful that build the NorCal
2030 that had a surface parts count close if not more that the K1.

With the right tools building surface mount can be easier than thu hole.

I have a decent soldering station, but for SMD beyond a few parts I don't

station to melt the paste and solder the parts. If it's a larger board, I
use a microcontroller-driven heating plate called a ReflowR to precisely
ramp up the heat, melt the paste, and cool it off so as to cause the least
thermal shock to the board or the components.

[Elecraft] WA6OWR Jerry - Cover Boy

2011-08-26 Thread Paul Maciel
Hi Everyone,

I was killing time browsing the magazine rack at the Barnes and Noble in
the mall last night waiting for the XYL to finish up some shopping when
I saw a familiar face staring back at me! There on the cover of the
September issue of Popular Communications was a photo of Jerry Parker
WA6OWR.

Besides being a QRP'er, Jerry was the web designer and maintainer of the
first NorCal QRP Club web site and I believe he still designs and
maintains some other QRP related web pages. His efforts are a great
contribution to QRP activities and have certainly helped sell a lot of
NorCal and other radio kits.

It has been a while since I've seen him and he is looking good. Maybe
he will make the trip up from Paso Robles and join us at Pacificon this
fall.

If you want to take a look you don't have to run to the mall but can see
him online at http://www.popular-communications.com

Have fun,
