Fw: [Elecraft] Elegant PSK interface (KPSK2)
Hi Daniel, Greetings from Barcelona, Spain Please pay a look to my website: www.qsl.net\ea3blq Menu -> English - Digital Interface. Hope you'll like my setup. Best 73 Pauli, EA3BLQ K2/100 # 1044 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: www.qsl.net/ea3blq - Original Message - From: "Daniel Reynolds" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, May 26, 2005 6:31 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Elegant PSK interface (KPSK2) Hi Everyone, I'm curious if anyone has considered building a PSK interface into their K2 with a couple audio jacks coming out the back of the K2 (e.g. where the transverter is supposed to go on my #3421)? What I'm thinking about is building an interface that ties into the K2 (bypassing the front mike connection) with a more sensitive VOX built in - and with line-level type audio input/output. My aim is to avoid the messy cable situation I currently have with my PC laptop where I must use a USB-serial adapter to key an outboard interface, and a bunch of audio cables. Instead, it will be similar to the Ten Tec Argonaut V - and only require two audio patch cords between my laptop and the radio - with the rig being keyed by the built-in interface, and audio levels being controlled only on the laptop. 73, Daniel AA0NI ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Transmit power control problem
Hello there friends, Further to my August 15 message when I asked for help to solve my lack of power control after having solved my "Info 80" problem, I am happy to let you know that only this morning I have finally fought the dragon to death and my K2 has overcome its lack of power control. I'll share my quest with you all as it may by of any help to someone sometime. Have received some very interesting advices and have been in touch with Gary at Elecraft who, as usual, has been very helpful. Have made a lot of measurements and tests. Have replaced the D9 diode (an old 1N34A) and changed to a 1N5711 and have also changed R68 to 226 ohm 1% so as to upgrade the RF Output Detector stage to the current standards, but to no avail. I let the matter sleep for some days and yesterday afternoon I resumed my fight again. First of all I removed all the options, namely NB2, KSB2, K160RX and KDSP2, reinstalling the respective jumpers. And ... alas!!. When I pressed TUNE after setting the power to 5 watts, the Dummyload/Watmetter read 5 watts and just a little bit more. That was amazing. The RF control worked. Just then I was called to attention as dinner was ready and I had to leave my fight and clear up all the mess of tools and whatnots I had in my workbench which, as it happens to many of us, is in the kitchen office. This morning I have resumed the fight and the basic CW K2 still controlled the RF output. Then I have installed the KSB2 option and ... yes, you are right; there it was: NO ALC and lack of power control. The KSB2 was the culprit. Resuming, the U1 PIC (F/W 1.08b) was damaged. Have installed an older U1 version (1.07) and the K2 works again. Now I'll have to ask Scott at Elecraft for a replacement KSB2 F/W. BTW. Nobody had mentioned to me that a possible KSB2 failure could be the cause of my troubles and now, browsing N0SS new web site, www.n0ss.net , I have downloaded a PDF file titled "Use the Serial Wrong Cable and ... BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN", by Gary Surrency and Tom Hammond and dated December 25, 2003, where all my K2 ailments and probable causes are commented. A pity I didn't get it earlier, but now I know first hand and have learned a bit more on my K2 inners. My thanks to all of you who have contacted me on the matter. This forum is a deep well of friendliness, companionship and knowledge. Sorry for the bandwidth and thanks for your bearing with me. [Elecraft] Transmit power control problem
Hi there friends, Further to my former message asking for your kelp, forgot to tell you that I am having the problem on the bare basic K2, no KPA100 or KAT100 installed, so those two options have nothing to do with my present problem. When making the K2ATOBKT mods, I installed two 12 pF capacitors across C21 and C23 so I had to realign reception and transmission and it's been then when I have become aware that I could not control the transmission power output and that is what's keeping me worried. Not the Hi Cur message, though this can also be part of the problem. Thanks for all the feedback I am already receiving. 73 Pauli, EA3BLQ K2/100 # 1044 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: www.qsl.net/ea3blq ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Transmit power control problem
Hello friends and greetings from Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, That's me again looking for help from you, the Elecrafter's community. After having solved my recent "Info 80" trouble and since I had upgraded my KPA100 and all the F/W, my K2's configuration got quite disarranged, I decided to implement all the mods to upgrade my K2 rev A to a K2 rev B, before getting into the configuring and aligning task (I had installed some of the mods but not all) so I purchased the K2ATOBKT kit and did a lot of disoldering and soldering. All has run as per the manual but (Why there's always a but? Is it Murphy's Law?) now I have got a transmit power control problem. When I key down (TUNE) the K2 and independently of the value I set in the POWER Control (be it 0.50, 2.00, 5.00 or 10.00 watts) I always get the "Hi Cur" message and the internal wattmeter drops to 0.3 watts, but the truth is that the power transmitted into a very well calibrated 50 Ohm Dummy Load and RF Power Meter (the QRP RF-Power Meter PM-1300a by SSB-Electronics) always, and I mean always with independence of the K2 POWER Control, reads between 10-14 watts depending of the frequency. Have made the resistance checkings and they are OK My PS is a switched Daiwa SS-330 X with an output voltage of 13.8 v fixed and an output current continuous of 30 A Measuring the voltage at the K2 Aux 12v connector I get the following readings: K2 switched OFF = 13.84 v K2 switched ON = 13.62 v K2 transmitting = 13.16 v With the Cal Cur set at 2.5 A, on my DMM I get the following current readings: K2 receiving = 0.29 A K2 transmitting = 2.51 A The DC voltage readings for the PA finals Q7 and Q8 are: Collector K2 receiving = 13.60 v Collector K2 transmitting = 11.98 v Base K2 transmitting = 0.62 v DC voltage for the PA driver Q6 Collector K2 receiving = 13.60 v Collector K2 transmitting = 12.60 v Base K2 transmitting = 1.02 v Emitter K2 transmitting = 0.26 v I fear the PA finals may be damaged so they do not obey the POWER control settings, but am not convinced of that and although I have the K2PAKIT ready, I do not want to replace them unless it is necessary. BTW, the heat sink is isolated from the Q7 and Q8 collectors. Any ideas and/or suggestions will be much welcome. Sure I am missing something but honestly, at this moment, I do not know what. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance. [Elecraft] Need help to cope with the K2-KPA100 Info 080 message
Hi K2rs, Greetings from Barcelona. Gary Surrency, in his last message to me on this subject, said: "It certainly looks like you have found the cause of the INFO 80 message" Just for your knowledge and for the record in case my "KPA100 Info 080" experience may be of any future help to some other K2r running into the same trouble, let me tell you that I have had to digest a lot of information and suggestions I have received from a good and wonderful bunch of you K2rs who have answered my S.O.S call and to whom I have personally thanked "off list", and also from the people at Elecraft, mainly Gary, to whom I publicly thank for his cooperation. In the past months I had sporadically made all kind of checking and double-checking but this past weekend I disassembled the KPA100 once again so as to inspect the PCB thoroughly, mainly the PIC and RS232 area, looking one more time for any cold solder and/or short and to make measurements anew. Finally, do not quite understand why it didn't happen before, I traced the problem down to a damaged U6, the EL5146CN op. amp, that was loading down the 5V regulated supply and thus the KPA100 U1 PIC did not work properly, provoking the "Info 080" message and my headache. I removed the damaged IC and from then on I got the expected messages on the K2 display. Presently I am waiting for a replacement IC I have requested to Elecraft as I have not found it here in Barcelona Thanks once again to you all and may I wish lots of luck to Jim Larsen, AL7FS, whose "Info 080" trouble message I have just read on the list. Maybe my example can be of any help to him. Fw: [Elecraft] Need help to cope with the K2-KPA100 Info 080 message
Hi there friends, Help is still urgently needed. Wish to thank Phil (WD8QWR), Don (KD5NDB), Mike (VP8NO) and Don (N4HH) for their advice and good luck wishes and also wish to sympathize with Frank (DL4KQ) whose K2s (three to my knowledge) after upgrading F/Ws when they returned from T33C have been and are still suffering the same "info 080 illness" with exactly the same symptoms as mine. Friends, haven't had any luck at all. As Don, KD5NDB, pointed out, I have changed the resistors R6 at the control board and R64 at the RF board from their previous value to that of 100 Ohms as well as the capacitor C12 at the control board to 0.0027 uF (272). When I found Don was right and I had to change those parts, I thought: "This is it ..." but when I made the changes and keeping my fingers crossed, I switched the K2 on to keep seeing the damned message, I shouted a word I prefer not to reproduce and, believe me, I am not a foul-spoken man. Not at all. Have also changed KPA100 miniature RF chock RFC9 for a larger one same value (15uH) (had no small toroid handy) but to no avail. "Info 080" message is very persistent. This is a very strange problem I have been fighting for over three months before I have decided to address my question to the K2rs community as a last resource for help. The integrated K2/100 worked fine before doing the upgrading and now as soon as I introduce the KPA100, be it directly on the basic K2 (where there are no cables, but the flat cable, to check) or split, the damned "info 080" appears and stays. WITHOUT the KPA100, the basic K2 and the KAT100 seem to work fine, although now my K2 needs a through calibration after so many "Info 080" and initialization sessions. Have made all the proposed tests and to no avail. Am quite lost within a complicated and dense maze which looks like not having a way out. HELP!!! Hope to be luckier than Frank, DL4KQ. Three K2 with the same problem at once! My ...! Although Eric in his role of list moderator is for sure aware of my problem, I'm sending one copy to Gary at the support service to humbly ask for his help. Any new ideas will be more than welcome. Best wishes for good luck to you all. 73 Pauli, EA3BLQ K2/100 # 1044 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: www.qsl.net/ea3blq > > > > - Original Message - > > From: "Pauli Nunez EA3BLQ" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > To: > > Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2004 7:29 PM > > Subject: [Elecraft] Need help to cope with the K2-KPA100 Info 080 message > > > > > > > Greetings from Barcelona to all. > > > > > > Friends, need help to cope with the dreaded and hatred "Info 080" > message. > > > > > > Here's my story: > > > > > > Have been working with the integrated K2/100 and the KAT100-1 for rather > a > > > long time with no problem at all whatsoever. > > > > > > One day, some three months ago, I decided to upgrade my KPA100 > introducing > > > the changes to raise the SWR threshold, updating the U1 firmware to > > version > > > 1.09 and installing the new shielding with the ground clips. [Elecraft] Need help to cope with the K2-KPA100 Info 080 message
Greetings from Barcelona to all. Friends, need help to cope with the dreaded and hatred "Info 080" message. Here's my story: Have been working with the integrated K2/100 and the KAT100-1 for rather a long time with no problem at all whatsoever. One day, some three months ago, I decided to upgrade my KPA100 introducing the changes to raise the SWR threshold, updating the U1 firmware to version 1.09 and installing the new shielding with the ground clips. Now I have learned that I am once again behind with the KPA100 F/W. Will have to upgrade to version 1.10 to be up to date. I also upgraded the following firmwares: K2MCU to version 2.04P, K2IOC to version 1.09 KSB2 to version 1.08b and KDSP2 to version 3.1 And so as to be able to use my K2DI-PCI Digital-Computer Interface, decided to split my K2/100 and install the upgraded KPA100 with the KAT100-2 in one EC-2. After having made, checked and rechecked all the split connections, I switched the K2 on and ... guess what ...? You are right, I got the damned "Info 080" message. First time I saw it. Tried installing the KPA100 directly on the K2 as I had it formerly. The same result. To make a long story short: If I do not introduce the KPA100 in the circuit I do not get that message. The K2 talks with the computer obeying all the CAT orders it receives and the KAT100 does work ok, switching bands and tuning the antenna. This circumstance makes me believe that the problem resides in the KPA100. When reading the KPA100 troubleshooting notes for the "Info 080" message it refers me to the K2 Manual troubleshooting notes, which I have read, checked and counterchecked. Have readjusted C22 at the control board with the help of a calibrated external counter. The resistance between U1 pin 28 on the RF board and U6 pin 40 at the control board is 923 Ohms (well within the required 900-1000 ohms) Neither R6 on the control board or R64 on the RF board are shorted to ground. The voltage on pin 28 of U1 with the K2 power on is 5.63 v which reading is ok as for the established canons. (Power supply voltage at the very K2 inlet is 13.8 v) I have inspected the KPA100 board and have checked it once and again, mainly the area object of the last mod, looking for any cold solder and/or bridges but all seems to be correct. Any ideas or suggestions will be much welcome. Thank you in advance. Hi all, Thanks Mike and John, I got my shield upgrade kit for the KPA100 with no speaker shield either and had no notice about such device until now. I have downloaded the current "KPA100 shield upgrade manual" and have seen what is all about. Re: [Elecraft] W3FPR's Fixed AF Output Kit Mounting
Hi there Mike and all, Have read Mike's message and an alarm bell has immediately rang in my brain. What's that about a mod including a "SHIELD FOR THE SPEAKER" on the "newer K2" that may prevent Don's Fixed AF kit from being mounted in the recommended position because, as Mike says: "The speaker shield is just a bit too big"? Have been searching Elecraft's web for info on this "K2's Speaker Shield" and have found nothing. What am I loosing? Or is Mike talking about the integrated K2/100 and is making reference to the KPA100's (not the K2) shield installed between the KPA100 and the K2 to protect the K2 from the RF emanated by the KPA100 under high SWR? If this is the case I'll switch off the "ALARM" sign and my K2DI v.III and K2DI-PCI project will be safe and sound.
