Re: [Elecraft] Kit or factory assembled K3? and what options?

2013-05-27 Thread Peter Hedberg
For a Nano second I thought about a self-build but when I considered time
verses cost it was a no brainer for me. My new K3 and P3 will be delivered
in a couple of days and a couple of hours after that I will have it on the
air. I wasn't at all concerned about my ability to assemble the parts and
pieces but I really like instant gratification so for me to pay the little
extra to have the factory do the assembly and testing made sense for me. I
pretty much knew what I wanted in the way of accessories but I wasn't real
clear on the filter choices. Their customer service guru Harold knew the
questions to ask and he walked me through what would be best for my type of
operating. In the end he even saved me some dollars over my original
choices.

Congratulations Bill on passing the general and extra in one sitting and
welcome to our world. It's a fantastic place!

Subject: [Elecraft] Kit or factory assembled K3? and what options?

I've built LOTS of electronics over the years... but frankly I'm not sure I
have enough time to build a K3.. (which is what I'm currently looking
at..) - or a KX3.

My problem: deciding which options will be useful. I've never done hf...
I've been a broadcaster (with 20kw into 4 heliax with an antenna way up
theree.. or a pile of verticals that I never have to touch because the
tuning was done correctly N years ago I had the Tech for 2 months, and
with my background splurged on taking both the general and extra.. and
somehow managed to pass both. (Thanks to the DurHamFest and their VE's!)

I'm not sure what will be needed at this point. Right now, I don't 'do'
code. Never learned it. I will eventually pick it up, but not right at
first... Computer? but of course... That's the sort of stuff I do for a
living, so morse from keyboard? No issue. Reading what comes back? The
computer can handle that.

Pactor? Shoot.. I'm a tcp/ip junkie... it's not IP, but it is a packet from
point A to someplace else.. Can do.

Other that that.. I'm really not sure what options will be required in a 100
watt/living in an apartment with resulting ugly antenna issue world will
need. Obviously the antenna tuner, but what else is everyone finding
useful. (I can skip the 2 meter add on for the time being... probably can
find a 6 meter antenna I can fudge into functionality.. SOMETHING for 20 to
6 meters perhaps...or 20 through 10... Again, not sure what will be needed.

Naturally, if you ask Elecraft, you will get a system with every possible
bell and whistle.. but is it all something a newb will use?

[Elecraft] Dayton Discounts - End of Story!

2013-05-18 Thread Peter Hedberg
Okay I published a rant when maybe I should have thought it through a little
bit beforehand. It seems there are a lot of very strong Elecraft supporters
as well as a lot of frugal hams. I admire a company who gets the customer
service thing right and it's obvious from many of your comments Elecraft has
done just that. Since my rant I've have a chance to find that out for
myself. Friday afternoon I called to place my order with Howard their
customer support go to guy. He's the perfect customer support person. He
didn't rush me, answered my questions and made feel like I was the most
important person he had talked to all day. That's the sign of a quality
company and as some of you pointed out that's worth a lot more than a
Dayton Discount. As one of my K3 owner friends put it, I probably spend
more on Brats and Beer when we go to Dayton then I would have saved.

The following is from this week's engineering and design newsletter about
cheap hams. (great timing) There is a short commercial at the beginning.

[Elecraft] Dayton

2013-05-17 Thread Peter Hedberg
Is anyone at Dayton that can tell me what the K3 Dayton special is? Ready
to purchase one but the factory didn't know what the special was and won't
take my order and said I had to be at Dayton to get the special. I go to
Dayton every other year and this is my off year. I guess I should have
bought it at Visalia!

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K7WTG Dayton

2013-05-17 Thread Peter Hedberg
Sorry to hear that. I guess I misunderstood what I was told at Visalia. I
filled out an order form ($4500) near the end of the exhibit time but didn't
place the order because I wasn't sure about the filters I wanted and said at
the time I wanted to take advantage of a possible Dayton special. True I
didn't say I'd be at Dayton but nobody asked if I would be at Dayton. As I
said earlier I go to Dayton every other year and last year I bought a Icom
7700. A couple of months ago I purchased a Icom 7410 as a backup and
haven't even taken it out of the box because of a couple of my friends said
I really need to look the K3. Between that and couple of the seminars at
Visalia sold me on the K3 but it would have been an impulse purchase at the
time and I don't do that. That's why I choose to wait. Over the years
I've made a few purchases after Dayton and got the Dayton deal when I asked
for it. Maybe next year when I come to Dayton again I'll still be in the
mood for K3.

Pete,
We'll be happy to take any order from you.
We just can't give you the Dayton Special unless you are there.
